52MX: Panther and Felino (or Mascara and Volador, if you prefer) in trios and the Love Buffet and Hijos de Averno. Namajague appeared in the tercera here, which probably won’t make TV unless one of those went short. They do have time to fill with no Ras de Lona clips and no earlier match highlights.

LATV: a rerun!

CMLL-Main/Gala: Atlantis vs Ultimo Guerrero and the women’s match.

AAA: this week should be easy enough. It’s the Cozumel taping on both shows, with the main show getting half of it and the regional show getting it all. For everyone in Juarez, the regional show airs at midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning.

FOX: This should be the Reyes del Aire, and probably nothing but.

C3: Virus vs Loco Max. Namajague for sure makes TV here.

Mega6: Build up to Volador/Mascara.

Puebla: Psicosis/Rush, Negro Casas/Sombra.

Perros: dunno.

ACM: back to the usual mix of new matches and reruns. Dorada/Purpura/Silencio vs Gemelo Muerte I/Genocida/Beast was the main.

IWRG: Tonight’s show – Angelico/Toscano/Veneno vs Piratas/Eterno.

recap

Pequeño Halcón, Shockercito, Último Dragoncito vs Mercurio, Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Warrior: Quicker than usual match. Nitro, Mercurio and Warrior are a good idea for a trio, though Warrior was more goof around mode than selling big for his opponents. It was a fine match for how long it lasted, but nothing memorable.

ow

Cancerbero, Raziel, Virus vs Arkángel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Skándalo: Didn’t really feel like a new matchup, because both sides just took turns doing their usual set of moves. There wasn’t much different about because it was rudo vs rudo, except the occasional spot that would’ve looked better if a técnico was involved. Tuareg could use something to bust them out of the rut they’re in, but it hasn’t happened here yet.

Angel de Oro

Ángel de Oro, Super Porky, Valiente vs Misterioso Jr., Shigeo Okumura, Vangelis: a routine match that didn’t feel like a semimain on a normal card. Nothing wrong with it, but another match not that memorable. Okumura’s head injury did not look good, but he still took a flight to Japan and worked for two days. Maybe it wasn’t so bad, maybe wrestlers are all crazy.

Mascara Dorada

La Sombra, Máscara Dorada, Rush vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto: Rush is not so far off from Mascara now. He’s a different dynamic, but this trio lineup was like the one that produced some great matches in 2011. This was not a great match in 2012. A mostly by the numbers match. It was less than that in the first, and a little more at the conclusion, but didn’t add up to much. It’s a sensible strategy, since 2/3rds of this match were headed to Japan for much more important matches, but it’s disappointing outcome. Champions should win an otherwise meaningless match, so it’s good they did.

top six stories of the last two weeks

This is not a strong week for this concept.

  1. Blue Panther and Negro Casas went to a time limit draw, continuing to tease a hair match as the main event of Dos Leyendas (quietly announced for 03/02, an early date.)
  2. Atlantis beat Ultimo Guerrero a couple more times, in the other match CMLL is built up like now.
  3. AAA taped a largely uneventful feud show Cozumel. LA Park’s unhappiness and Jack vs Perro.
  4. the WON says CMLL is interested in bringing back the likes of Dr. Wagner Jr, LA Park, Latin Lover and Perro Aguayo Jr.
  5. EDIT: Angel de Oro won the 2012 Reyes del Aire. He’s the first back to back winner.
  6. Chico Che cheated to take Black Terry’s hair, so Black Terry cheated to make sure Chico Che lost his hair.
  7. The X-Project cards were announcing, including Davey Richards vs Daga, Sami Callihan & Samurai del Sol vs Traumas, and All Three Parkas vs Raven, Super Crazy and Tommy Dreamer.
  • Mystery Japanese wrestler Namajague debuted in CMLL
  • members of the Black Eyed Peas got to meet Mephisto.
  • Dragon Rojo is out with a leg injury, which may have derailed some plans.
  • other people who lost hair: Iron Love
  • people who kept titles: Polvora

Tecnicos took 2/3.
5) Mr. Águila, Rey Bucanero, Volador Jr. b La Máscara, Máscara Dorada, Valiente

4) Cinico, Drago, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. b Black Abyss, Electroshock, Fugitivo dmxex Part 2 dxmex Part 1
Wagner’s team took 2/3. Cincio survived a Fugitivo foul to win. Fugitivo challenged him to a hair vs mask match.
5) Bestia 666, Damián 666, Hijo de Rey Misterio I b Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown dxmex Part 1 dxmex Part 2
rudos took 2/3. Damian stole Monster’s mask and rolled him up for the win.

That sure looks like Drago. No sign of a facial injury

AAA says El Consejo their offices and attacked Electroshock and Heavy Metal. Good to know Heavy Metal still exists, though this is the second straight time he’s been beat up off screen. That’s never a good sign. I suspect this might turn up on the El Consejo video channel.

A Chessman interview re: el Consejo actually serves to remind me that Chessman and Abyss are the current tag team champions. I forgot that happened. I’m still not totally sure why that happened. I’d be okay if Thumbtack Man kept the belt if it meant he didn’t come back. The whole TNA Invasion storyline seems old news now, a bit because El Consejo is being treated as a big deal and a bit because TNA hasn’t been in AAA in two months. Jeff Jarrett brings the story up on his Twitter account occasionally and AAA mentioned Jeff Jarrett during Mesias’ match this week on TV, so the promotion hasn’t forgotten it, but it feels pushed into the background. They’ve got a lot of work to do if people are going to care about the Jarrett/Mesias match at Rey de Reyes.

AAA also mentioned the Rey de Reyes tournament for this first time this year, though there’s still no sign of how it’ll work or when it’ll begin.

This is a good day for non-stories, so let’s talk about Alex Koslov. On twitter (now back @alexkoslovcom), Alex confirmed he had been cut by FCW. Alex had changed his Twitter avatar from a WWE shot back to a photo from his AAA days weeks ago, so I don’t think this was a big surprise for him. AAA ran a tribute video package for him when he left and the same people are still in charge, so I’m sure they’d be happy to have him back. Marco Corleone’s mentioned on Twitter he’d like to see Alex back in CMLL, and every indication of late is CMLL is more willing to take back people who’ve left them acrimoniously so it may be a real option. But these are just two of many options Alex has; he could also try to stick elsewhere in the US to build up his name or work on whatever WWE didn’t like, he could try to get in Japan to get a different experience, or he could decide that WWE developmental was the end of his road and move into another career (which seems to be the choice a lot of people in his situation pick.) He has RT comments about going back to CMLL, but one should not consider “retweets” to be definitive. It’d be great if he’s back in lucha, but we don’t really know anything until he says something himself.

In addition to Ayumi and Devitt, Mr. Cacao returns to CMLL for the 02/26 (Coliseo) and 02/28 (Mexico.)

Rob has the highlights of 01/17 & 01/24 CMLL

Lucha Libre in Japan

NOAH has announced Super Crazy will be wrestling with them from 02/25 to 03/25. Ricky Marvin requested the promotion bring him in, and they’ll square off in a singles match on the first day of the tour.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 02/14/2012 Arena Mexico
1) Bengala & Camaleón vs Camorra & Cholo
2) Goya Kong & Marcela vs Tiffany & Zeuxis
3) Bam Bam, Eléctrico, Último Dragoncito vs Demus 3:16, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito
4) Ángel de Oro, Blue Panther, Stuka Jr. vs Felino, Negro Casas, Puma King
5) Marco Corleone, Máximo, Rush vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Tiger

Apparently, that foul finish of Loco vs Virus was the end of the issue. At least for now.

Puma King getting a much higher spot than usual (but that’s a bit of having women and minis on the same show.)

Love Buffet on the Valentine’s Day show makes all the sense in the world.

CMLL (TUE) 02/14/2012 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) El Divino vs Infierno
2) Black Metal & Leo vs Disturbio & Rey Trueno
3) Dalis la Caribeña, Goya Kong, Lady Apache vs La Comandante, La Seductora, Princesa Blanca
4) Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Pólvora, Rey Escorpion, Último Guerrero
5) La Máscara vs Volador Jr. [NWA MIDDLE]

Polvora as Dragon Rojo! Who should be offended there? It’s a savvy move by UG, Polvora can’t be beat in Guadalajara. Top 3 should all air on GDL TV, if you’re in the mood for another La Mascara title match.

indy (SAT) 02/18/2012 Arena Neza
1) Guerrero Mixtico, Neza Kid, Turbo vs Comando Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Mike Segura
2) Super Muñeco, Súper Pinocho, Súper Ratón vs Coco Blanco, Coco Verde, Cocolores
3) Black Terry, Negro Navarro, Scorpio Jr. vs Hijo del Solar, Skayde, Solar I
4) Atlantis, Blue Panther, Último Guerrero vs Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000, Universo 2000
5) Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V vs Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Plata, Brazo de Platino

The perfect show for the people who know old lucha names and don’t follow the current shows at all.

recap

rudas (heart) crackers

Dalis la Caribeña, Dark Angel, Marcela vs Amapola, Princesa Blanca, Zeuxis: If the referee can just completely ignore the rules of trios matches in lucha libre to get a definite finish, can someone inform any referee who may be in charge of a Negro Navarro match at any time in the future of this remarkable development? (Specifically, the Arena Lopez Mateos referees who might be on that February show.) Nonsensical disregard for the rules besides, this was a whole lot of fun. Lots of fast moving action the whole way, none of the usual mix ups seen in these women’s matches. It was maybe too fast moving at points – not too hard to keep up, but counters and reversals were coming too easy at certain points to make this look too much like something they’d been running thru in the gym all week – but I didn’t have problem with most of the match. Dark Angel, in her first match back here in a while, looked like she hadn’t missed a beat and really made wish she was around a lot more. Zeuxis and Dalis kept up and didn’t stand out negatively, which is as strong a compliment as you can any of the newer girls. Best women’s match since the Blanca/Marcela title match.

assassination kick

La Máscara, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada vs Mr. Águila, Psicosis, Volador Jr.: Another really fun match, one that I’d been happy to see a few more minutes. The finish almost came as a surprise, but I guess there’s not much more to do after you stomp the life out of Monito. Sombra had the one spot that didn’t look so great, but a lot of spots which were really good. Aguila and Psicosis continue to be in great form. This one makes the MOTYC list.
