Boot Camp was a reality TV show on Fox. This was before Fox realized it's secret formula to reality TV was putting lots of available people in a confined area for a period of time and watching them flirt. Boot Camp wasn't anything like that, nor was it that great itself. Boot Camp put 14 people through a reality TV version of the Army's Basic Training. Four Drill Instructors were hired to make the contestant's life miserable.

The hook was that unlike other reality shows (read: "Survivor", who eventually sued Boot Camp, claiming they were a rip off) there was not only a "vote off" elimination of a contestant but also the eliminated contestant got to eliminate ("take") one of the remaining players. I thought it was kinda cool - you had to be careful choosing who to eliminate, so they didn't eliminate you. All the remaining people were aware of who you voted for, so you couldn't backstab people without others finding out about it. There were also weekly missions with rewards and punishments but that's the gist of the show right there. The final two faced each other in six missions and were voted on by the seven people who were "took" - best of thirteen won.

Like I said before, I found the strategy parts to be interesting, inspiring me to spend a lot of time before the final recap trying to guess-a-mate what had happened that we hadn't seen. Most of the time, the show did a good job of showing what actually happened instead of just relying on contestant interviews to put it all together - this is best shown by the whole "rope" controversy which greatly affected the outcome of the show. I kinda wish they would've gone further and gave us some "now that they've seen what actually happened, what do they think" footage (the last show had plenty of room for it) but it was still an overall good job. Anyway, the other purpose for these recaps was that I was testing to see how hard it'd be to adjust to recapping something that wasn't so event-based in preparation for Tough Enough. It wasn't a deal once I got used to it, which was nice to find out.

The last episode of Boot Camp aired 5/23/01 and didn't get great ratings. The whole show didn't do that well, and given the downward trend all Reality TV is heading, I don't suppose they'll air a second season next year. It's FOX so you never know but it's not planned right now.
