Intros. Go back to last week to see what this show is all about, if you're unfamiliar with the concept.
Last week: Yaney was put in charge and surprising everyone, was successful in leading the mission. Lauder cried about his deceased wife. Coddington got sick. Some equipment was lost and no one quite figured it out who it was - people thought it was Wolf, but Moretty actually did. All that had no effect on the elimination - Lauder was voted off, and contrary to plans to remove supposed leader Brown, Lauder took Hutak.
Day 17, 600 - Wake Up. I woke up at 7 today and was groggy, and I didn't even have anyone yelling at me. There's Coddington's bed - she's not in.
630 - Coddington at Medic. I'm thinking they're not supposed to be standing around discussing strategy, but the women are - Whitlow suggest taking out Wolf with their five votes (Coddington, Whitlow, Morretty, Brown and I guess Yaney goes with them), but everyone's afraid they'll be taken. Coddington points out that she could be medically discharged, which means that Wolf wouldn't be able to take anyone that week. The rest of the women pretend they don't want to see her go but Whitlow and Morretty do interviews talking about how much they would benefit if she had to leave. And everyone's happy
730 - Jackson elected leader. We don't actually see that, just him leading everyone in their (five mile?) run. Jackson tells us one reason he came here was to able to afford the engagement ring - he wanted to before, but he had to get an apartment before. He wants to do it the right way, which apparently blurting your plans out before a nationwide (more or less) audience. Push-ups for everyone! Drill Instructor McSweeny says Jackson's a good guy but maybe a little cocky. Jackson says he's not here for leadership, 'cause he's got plenty of that, but he's here to see how far he can go.
1040 - Morning Physical Training. Morning stretches into afternoon but the workout doesn't end and everyone's looking a little bit dead. Wolf provides the foreshadowing by saying everyone's at the breaking point and it's just a matter of time before someone goes off.
1205 - Morretty goes off. Well, the subtitle is mine but true. McSweeny has Brown and Morretty switching from jumping jacks to push ups far faster than they (or anyone else) could pull it off, either to get them moving up and down a lot or just for his own personal enjoyment. Morretty tells us that she can't go on any further, it seemed never ending. McSweeny tells Morretty not to roll her eyes and continues the confusing and quick directions. McSweeny tells us that he can read her. Morretty tries to defend herself ("This recruit is not making faces!") but McSweeny's too interested in yelling "SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" to listen, running over to get in her face and tell her. They yell and yell and yell at each other and Rosenbum is over to assistant in the yelling, causing Morretty to change what she's repeatedly yelling ("STOP SPITTING ON ME!") and get up from her push up position. "SHUT YOUR MOUTH! SHUT YOUR MOUTH! SHUT YOUR MOUTH!" "STOP GETTING ON ME!" Then everyone stops yelling and Rosenbum and McSweeny intimidate her back into line. (That's actually kinda scary - Morretty looks like she just had a gun pointed at her head.) Morretty tries to play it off like McSweeny was mad because she wasn't reacting to his stuff like usual - but I think yelling was the part that actually got him mad. McSweeny says you never ever question a drill instructor.
Back in the women's barracks, Morretty cries, because she was "overwhelmed" (her word) at what happened to her. She tells Brown "this is the worst day of my life." Brown says it was gonna be Morretty or her, because neither of them can stand McSweeny. Morretty takes a shower, and starts crying to DI Taylor. Morretty sounds calm and collected in the interview they keep showing, but she's losing it while talking to Taylor and explaining what happened. Morretty tells us that everyone has a lot of respect for Taylor because she's the nice drill instructor who actually cares about the recruits and realizes that they aren't real soldiers. Taylor talks to Morretty about her kids and her husband, and how proud of her they'll be. Taylor asks Morretty's first name (Jennifer) and calls her by it, which makes her a little happier. Morretty tells us that she felt a thousand percent better (you could hear her voice crack at the end, so I'm thinking she might just be holding it in for now.) Taylor tells us she was just doing what she could do to get her back in a good mental state to continue training.
Day 18, 1415 - Mission Training. They're doing an obstacle course, and they say it a lot. First up is a crawling through mud under barbed wire, and no one has a problem with this. They're all rather muddy to start it off. Next obstacle is a log they have cross over, which they all do, although Wolf hits the log hard. "Pain is good!" They show a bunch of different obstacles and I'll wait for something important to happen - they're getting bumps and bruises but everyone's getting through. Yaney has trouble get over a log - but eventually does. Everyone talks about how far Yaney's come and how he's learned so much about himself here. Now on to an obstacle where they have to use cross a field jumping from tree stump to tree stump - Morretty slips and falls and has to do it over again. Whitlow goes and grabs her right leg - the DIs come over, check for a break, don't find one, and tell her to walk it off. Morretti says it looked like Whitlow completely rolled her ankle. Whitlow wants to continue but the medics won't let her. Morretty says she's pretty hurt, but everyone's pushing themselves hard to get better. Whitlow says other people would quit rather than go through the stuff they're going through. The rest of the squad carries her off.
Night 18, 1930 - Female Barracks. Whitlow's getting grief for not being careful enough with her injured foot. Brown tells us that she and Morretty are having to do more since Whitlow and Coddington can do less, and it's been this way forever. Whitlow limps into the mess hall. Once there, Coddington is told she's back on full duty, recovered from whatever she had. Whitlow is still on partial duty. Jackson tells us that Coddington's been out so long, some of the other female recruits are annoyed that she gets to do the mission without having to do the work before it. Morretty and Brown discuss how annoying the injuries have been, mocking Coddington for complaining about the sand being painful while she's been sitting out. We see Coddington complaining to them about and Morretty rolls her eyes (you'd think she'd learn about that.) Coddington says that tensions are getting high. Morretty and Brown say that since the first day, when Katherine quit in the bathroom, they're been carrying people - they have to carry Whitlow to the bathroom now. Morretty tells us that she's got a hurt back and a hurt knee, but she's not telling anyone because the injured people are the ones who are weeded out.
2130 - Recreation Room. Morretti tell us there's a lot of "crap" going on - you don't know who's telling the truth anymore. Whitlow tells Morretti that if she made it all the way, she would want to face off against Brown, Jackson or Morretti. Brown tells us that she doesn't trust Whitlow, because she came into this with a plan. Whitlow tells Morretti that she's voted for the team the whole time, then tells us that she never realized she was this manipulative and admits that's she lying to Morretti. Morretty says that Yaney's strategy is to tell everyone else that he's going to vote for them. Yaney says it's to shake everyone up a little bit - no one's safe, and he doesn't like the cliques. Whitlow says that Yaney is a wild card. Yaney says his mom told him to backstab everyone, so that's what he's going to do.
Day 19, 845 - Reward/Punishment. McSweeny tries to get them to guess what their reward is, giving them hints and they finally figure out it's going to be movie night if they win. If they lose, they're going to be doing pushups at midnight
915 - Mission Briefing - This one's called REBEL - they have to cross rope obstacles, then use three boards and tree stumps to cross a minefield in under a hour. Wolf says they can only go as fast as their slowest recruit, and two of them are or were injured. We're reminded what the stakes are - Jackson's immunity is on the line as well, of course.
They reach the first obstacle, swinging over a field. Everyone making over with no problem. Same thing with the next obstacle. Wolf and Morretty scout out ahead as Jackson and the rest make to the second checkpoint to get the boards. Jackson's upset that they went past the checkpoint without him, and they race back to meet him. They arrive at checkpoint 3 with 30 minutes left. We're reminded that every time someone or something touches the ground, they lose a minute. Jackson decides that they only need two boards to get everyone across, but we're informed on screen that they actually need all three. Things go okay for the first ten minutes, but then everything breaks loose: feet and boards touch the ground and they quickly run out of options without that third board. Morretty says the drill instructions yelling at them caused them more problems. We here separate takes about why it went down, but everyone seems to agree there was a failure to communicate and lead by Jackson. McSweeny is disappionted because it wasn't a case of trying and failing, it was that they weren't trying hard enough. The lecture they get is probably the easiest part of the punishment. Jackson thinks may he's not that great of a leader after all.
Night 19, 2345 - Punishment. The recruits are scared about what's coming now. Morretty wonders if just not getting the movie and feeling bad about failing is enough. I wonder what she'd say if her kid said that. Yaney doesn't think he can do this. Morretti's even scared. Wolf: "What's the worse that can happen?" Yaney: "We are going to die." There's the drill instructors, and commence the yelling. Francisco calmly tells us that all the DIs were upset in the lackluster performance; the recruits are capable of a lot more. Jackson doesn't understand why they were so bad, and compares it to a sports team losing. Except, with the military, you kinda die if you lose, so you even one lose is too many. They've been going for 75 minutes and they're still going. McSweeny says that the recruits failure is a reflection on the drill instructors. Morretty tells us how much she hates McSweeny. And while everyone's jogging on sad, doing push ups, whatever, about half to death, we see Whitlow sitting down and watching, because she's still on on partial duty. I think she realizes how much they must hate her right now - not for anything she did, but what's she not doing.
210 - Drill Instructors Destroy The Barracks. This doesn't quite get explained, McSweeny and Rosenbum just go off and throw everything around and out of both barracks. Jackson complains that they're being told to be disciplined yet the DIs are acting very undisciplined. Rosenbum lectures the recruits once again.
330 - Cleanup. So, they do all those exercises and they get to reassemble their rooms. And wake up in two and half hours. How nice. Wolf says those who don't crack under this pressure are those that are going to last till the end. Yaney says sometimes he's not sure if he can deal with it anymore. Brown says that everyone probably thinks everyday about quitting. Jackson goes to the female barracks to make sure everyone's okay, apologize for screwing up the mission and show off his abs, maybe not in that order. (Though, if I had abs like that, I might do the same thing.)
Day 20, 830 - Morning Chow. Coddington says that she trusts Yaney the most of everyone in there - they trust each other. Yaney says she's been getting to know Coddington, and trusts her. She doesn't get upset anymore. Yaney tells Coddington he's gonna puke before he even does his first stretching exercise.
1015 - Morning Tasks. Brown talks about changing strategies - she feels she's earned the right to get to the end, no matter what she has to do to get there. While cleaning the bathroom, Wolf and Brown discuss a plan - Brown thinks Jackson's gonna vote out Whitlow, and Wolf urges her to do so. Didn't these people hate each other last week? Wolf says the rest of the females aren't going to want to stand by Whitlow, after she's been out while they've been working. Whitlow says that Wolf is extremely manipulative - Wolf hates Brown, but he pretends to be her best friend. Brown tells Wolf not to trust Whitlow - she rats people out, and she's got a plan. Brown and Wolf agree to try act distant from each other.
1330 - Female Barracks. Coddington and Whitlow talk (and to the camera) about having to deal with their injuries. Whitlow thinks her injury may affect her in the voting. Coddington says she's more confident than not, and she's heard Yaney's name being brought up a lot. Whitlow and Coddington discuss Yaney - they say his heart isn't in anymore. He's came and done what he wanted, so he can go.
Meanwhile, over in the male barracks, the rest of the squad is apparently deciding the future of the other two. (I wonder what Coddington and Whitlow are doing - assuming this is happening at the same time.) Yaney is trying to convince the women to do something and Morretty and Brown are reiterating their complaints about having to do Coddington and Whitlow's work - it wouldn't be fair for them to get to the end easy. Morretti complains about Coddington. Jackson says the people who are sitting out now will be more rested when it comes to the end.
Everyone heads to Dismissal Hill as we hear a few more thoughts. Wolf says a lot of people will vote for Coddington, but he won't, because he's afraid she'll pull him. But I thought the person voted out couldn't tell who voted for them? Jackson says he could be gone because he failed leading the mission.
Day 20, 1630 - Dismissal Hill. Eight recruits are left now, and soon it'll be six. We're reminded that Jackson can be dismissed. And here's the vote. We don't get to see anyone's name this time. Jackson addresses the squad: He's proud of everyone, and everyone should be proud that they got this far. Even when they lose, they're winning inside.
Time to dismiss the recruit. Rosenbum goes right for Yaney. Yaney stumbles through his explanation about why he shouldn't be let go so awkwardly he surprises himself. "I don't know how you made it this far, Yaney." Then to Coddington - she knows that it may have hurt her chances here. Brown looks guilt and sad. Whitlow's next - she says she'll be stronger after the injury. Back to Coddington - she's gone. And angry.
Tallying the vote - it's everyone who isn't Yaney, again. Yaney voted for - Brown? Okay. Coddington address the troop and sounds happy then she looked a bit ago - she doesn't hold anything against any of the guys. She doesn't even know what to say. (You'd think she'd have something prepared.) They're all winners for making it this far. She will take a piece of the drill instructors home with her, except for McSweeny - because he's a very mean nasty man. That's not nice.
Coddington gets her chance to discharge someone - "I feel I was voted for based on who the other recruits thought I'd pick [shot of Wolf and Morretti], um [breath], and I will pick that person - that person is Yaney." NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I was really hoping she'd say "Wolf" this time, because dang it, that's who everyone wanted gone. One last look at the vote total reveals Coddington's vote - for Yaney.
First time I saw that, I thought it was her revenge on the women for turning on her - not take out one of the trio of males they were fighting against by taking Yaney instead. This time, I think that Coddington actually believed that Yaney was done and she was doing him a favor by not making him struggle on any longer when he wouldn't have won it all anyway. I would have loved to see him try, though.
