CMLL on Televsia #953 (12/05)

(it’s probably not 953)

By my count, I’ve got something like 15 recaps done but not posted. Fine work on my part. Let’s see what I can do about that this week.

taped 12/04/09

I believe I downloaded LuchaLibreDeMexico‘s YouTube for this, so go check him out. Or buy something from his store.

– Héctor Garza, Místico, Strong Man vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

– La Sombra & Volador Jr. vs Ephesto & Mephisto for the CMLL World Tag Team Championship – very good match in the usual format, but it didn’t seem like it exceeded the usual format. It’s a match worth seeing, definitely, and among the best in 2009, but it wasn’t the breakout match to make anyone a bigger star. I mean, they did the crucifix powerbomb reversal into a ‘rana for the finish. This may be very pedantic of me, but they always do that finish. It was a very good spot show match and the problems here don’t appear to be as much as physical or mental. Like I said, still one of the best matches of the year, but there was nothing about that was of 2009 – it wasn’t special enough to differentiate between the many variations

(Also, CMLL needs new refs.)

– Terrible & Texano Jr. vs Naito & Yujiro in a double hair match – maybe this one just had the advantage of not being done nearly as much, but this DID feel like the breakout match Terrible & Texano needed to reach another level. It wasn’t as technically good as the previous match, but it was over more with the crowd (for obvious reasons) and seemed like a much bigger deal when it was over. My big question was if enough people saw this match for it to mean as much as it should’ve; I’m sure that’s the reason why it aired on TV the day after, unlike the other big matches this year.

CMLL #924 (05/16)

taped 05/15.

I’ve been working on TV listings lately, and it’s completely apparent how those show numbers are so hilariously off. They’re also still the best I’ve got.

I got this show via download and don’t have DM links for it. But you can easily track it down on YouTube; it’s just not easily broken down into matches for me to link to.

Amapola vs Marcela – about as good a lightning match you’re going to get, because they were all about working the clock as a countdown timer and working in as much as they could before it hit zero. The only nitpicky bit was Amapola has been snapping off her finisher a lot cleaner and quicker than she got it here, and so this finish was missing some of the impact of other recent ones. But it was really good, and it made me wonder why I haven’t recapped Marcela/Rosa yet. (It’s in the pipeline now.)

La Mascara, La Sombra, Sagrado vs Ephesto, Terrible, Texano Jr. – an okay exhibition to set up the angle. Which was funny, because as much as they tried to make it seem like an unplanned incident, everyone around was reacting to it like a typical fight.

Dos Caras Jr. ©, Mephisto, Averno vs Shocker, Mistico ©, Blue Panther – Hector Garza is the smartest man in the world for extracting himself from this Dos Caras feud. And it’s going to be a legitimate shame if Shocker’s first hair loss comes to Dos Jr. Dos as a rudo has essentially become a more reliable but less interesting rudo Lizmark Jr.. Someone’s got do something to fix this, right?

CMLL on Televisa #903 (12/13)

taped 12/12, aired 12/13

Leyenda de Azul was good, more notable for how the rudos flagrantly broke the rules. Terrible winning did seem to mean something. It seemed so set up for Marco to get the big win, since he had been dominating the match, and so the Texano low blow and Terrible pin really did feel like the rudos were stealing something rather than just a finish. Avernos needed the win more.

UG/Mistico was the high notes of the usual match, just enough to set up the big angle, which in turn sets up – uh. Didn’t set up anything, did it? More like just a way to get out of the match that’s not the usual match.
