CMLL FSE #91

taped 04/27, aired 05/12 in the US (and then a billion times in repeats)

Still don’t understand why Vangelis is here. If CMLL really thought Mistico needed a Mexican National Title, they should’ve had him done a match with Sangre on TV.* The thing is, after the fact, I’m less fired up about because Vangelis really isn’t getting booked that much and it’s not like he’s the only thing standing between me and really interesting CMLL.

* and then, as a make good for Sangre, they bring back the Super Light title so he can win that. Which gives Sangre and Shadow something to feud with, since doing quick mask match challenges based on a mythical (and non-existent) feud in Japan is a bit harder to get into.

I didn’t have space in this clip to slip in Grey Shadow’s promos, but they remain interesting. He’s doing them in English, but they don’t bother to subtitle them or have someone translate them (though there’s enough there that I think most people can figure it out and the announcers can explain it.) It’s not like his promos have been all that much better than his first go around these parts, and those were memorably bad. It’s still weird to me that Marco and Alex do (or attempt) interviews in Spanish and the man of mysterious Hispanic origin (from LA!) does not; if you didn’t know who Grey Shadow was, you might think he wasn’t really Hispanic and they just put a mask on him to obscure it.

CMLL FSE #86

taped 03/30, aired 04/13

I thought I had this one done, looked it over before posting it, and realized the last two falls got clipped off. There’s a lot of good things about how my setup has changed lately, but having to recap 90% on my old frequently crashing laptop is not one of them. I still haven’t used my refund money, but I think it may be going to the people at Apple as soon as they get around to announcing their 2008 models.

And that story is about as boring as this show. No match video, because there’s nothing you haven’t seen here before (and better), except maybe Hooligan. I’ve clipped the two Monito segments from this week and last week instead.

I think my opinion on the whole Dr. Wagner/CMLL is heavily colored by my dislike for the wrestler Dr. Wagner has become in 2008. He spent most of the main event doing all he could to make sure the crowd paid attention to him, and not the feud everyone else was working to get over. Wagner has no interest in selling, really no interest in doing anything except what will get the fans to chant his name at that moment. I think Atlantis was actually thrilled to work with him at the end, just because he knew they wouldn’t be doing anything at all.

I understand the wrestling business can be nasty and there are real advantages to beefing up your own profile at the direct expense of others, but that doesn’t mean it’s fun to watch in action. (And when a guy is so clearly out for number one, it makes it really hard to believe him a couple weeks later where he’s claiming to represent more than that.) Wagner’s become the worst example of all that’s problematic of the current CMLL style (stopping the match for chants like you’re panhandling for a reaction, disinterest in doing more than the same exact sequences every match, promos centered around catchphrases and worthless challenges) and worst of indy lucha (living off the name and past achievements for eternity.) It doesn’t have to be that way, it’s not like Wagner is shot, and that makes it even more frustrating.

I don’t begrudge Dr. Wagner for doing it a way he thinks works and makes him money. But I don’t mind him doing it someplace far off my TV set either.

It was nice to see the novatos here. Not just because they were different, but they were fun and you don’t actually get too many straight tag matches here.

When I was watching the minis match, it felt like it was in the bottom quarter of those that have aired, but it’s tough for me to put a finger on a single reason why. I like the idea of having guys of different shapes and weights in the division, but Bracito de Plata didn’t do much for me but be fat and I was kinda left thinking of his upside as “guy who should be losing his mask to Mini Halloween or Mini Damian any time now.” I dug Fire here more than I have in the past.

Amapola/Marcela matches have generally been better than this Amapola/Dark Angel match, but I would like to see it again with more time and it’s the most complete Dark Angel match in a while. Marcela and Amapola don’t get enough times for their matches either, but Sarah and Amapola were trying enough variety of stuff that I wanted to see all they would do if given more of an opportunity/less editing.

CMLL FSE #83

taped 03/02, aired 03/23 in the US

This one’s still not on the schedule to repeat yet, so I’m going with what I have – a version with no sound, and a missing fall of the opener. It’s just that way sometimes.

Not that this show is so hurt by it. The women’s match was not so different than other ones in the lead up to Amapola/Dark Angel and it’s not like I wasn’t going to watch the title match next week because I didn’t get the third fall here. (Still, why take out the deciding fall ever?) Main event was as long as most and worked out okay->good, but there wasn’t a lot new brought to the table.
