recap

a heavyweight title change is a statement on the general direction; CMLL is like other promtoions after all.

cheater

Valiente vs Rey Escorpion in a lightning match: Okay enough match that seemed like it need more time to do have the match they could’ve done. They always do the slow start, which makes the matches different but it often takes them too long to get going.

illegal

Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Averno, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas: the new trio got beat in five seconds and then lost the match! Otherwise, they looked fine! Guerrero Maya fit in well with the top guys for someone who was in segundas not too long ago. Delta looked like Delta. The Negro/Atlantis aspect of the feud seemed dropped this week.

Último Guerrero vs Héctor Garza for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship: I guess it’s appropriate for the Ultimo Guerrero title reign to end with Ultimo Guerrero having an Ultimo Guerrero match. It would’ve been nicer if it had been a good match, and not such a demonstration of why many of us have gotten so bored with Ultimo Guerrero matches. (Also weird: Garza never even going for the version of the move that he normally wins with.) They did some moves, kicked out of them, and then just didn’t kick of the last one, the end.

new champ

On Twitter, whatever many weeks it’s been since I wrote this and then actually posted it, I said I liked Amapola vs Estrellita better than this match. Nothing in this match was as great as Estrellita’s dive off the ramp to level Amapola. For that moment, it felt like Estrellita was doing everything she could to win a championship that meant everything to do here. This match had a finish out of a random submission, a finish out of a guy taking off his shirt and then a third fall of all the rote spots. This did not feel like two guys trying to prove who was best in the world, this felt like another day at the office. Volador vs Hector Garza felt more special than this too, though the two in this match did a lot more in this one.

This is also a product of watching (way too much) CMLL; this match works better when you haven’t seen it in it’s competent parts two dozen times, or are just drunk enough not to remember it. CMLL is clearly not designed for watching the way people who visit this site tend to watch it. Unfortuantly, they’re also relying on people to regualarlly turn out to these same shows, and they’re going to notice the same things.
