ChilangaMask, MaskedMania, Arena Mexico previews

Kid’s Day is April 30th, which falls on a Wednesday this year. Wednesday is not a convenient day to run events, so the usual plethora of lucha libre show (often free for children) has spread out over two weekends. There was a lot yesterday, there’s quite a lot next weekend, there’s a few extra spilled thru the week, but today seems to be the biggest day. Thanks to Alfredo and KrisZ poster finding skills, I’ve got 67 different lineups for today and that’s probably not close to the actual number.

There are three shows that rise above the others in importance

ChilangaMask has their April show in Arena Lopez Mateos, headlined by Satanico versus El Dandy for the final time in the Mexico City area. The show also has the Traumas vs Mr. Niebla & Herodes (Herodes is so dead), Black Terry versus Aero Boy, and the Fulgors versus David & Jack Crist vs Belial & Impulso. Terra has an interview with Dandy and a preview of the show. That show starts at 4pm local time, and highlights should air on next week’s Tercera Caida.

MaskedMania runs today at the ex-ECW Arena in Philadelphia. That show has a LA Park contra Dr. Wagner Jr. main event. This is probably not the only time LA Park & Dr. Wagner will fight – it’s what they do! – but it is possibly the only time they make video this year since TxT isn’t running and there’s no telling when they’ll be back in Monterrey. Solar vs Negro Navarro also have a singles match, as do Matt Cross and Casandro (who’s interviewed on Philly.com) and there’s five more matches on the card. You can watch the show thru Highspots iPPV for $10, and the show starts at 5pm Eastern, 4pm Central time.

CMLL has combined Kid’s day show & Arena Mexico anniversary show as it’s usual Sunady’s show. It’s not a strong lineup for either event, much less both taking place at the same time. The main event, the Revolucionarios versus Sombra, Mistico and Atlantis, is interesting only to see how they handle Sombra’s current status (extra tricky on a yearly show normally just about the good guys being good.) The show does have this year’s Rey del Aires match, scaled much down from last year but still with the potential of being a memorable match. Terra (via CMLL PR) has a generic look back at the history the building. The show will air at 5pm local (CT) on terra.mx.

The plan is to do live results on both CMLL and MaskedMania. (I figure @TerceraCaida and others might have info on the ChilangaMask show.)

Elsewhere, the usual show in Guadalajara includes a Fuego versus Demonio Maya title match in what’s obviously the biggest match in Maya’s short career. IWRG has a completely unnoteworthy show; they may be hurt because so many of the guys they bring are working elsewhere, but it doesn’t look like much is happening with the luchadors who are hanging around.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

Rob has highlights of 02/07/14 CMLL.

Black Terry Jr. has photos from an outdoor show with Guerrero Maya and Black Terry, and a second show with Shu el Guerrero, Black Terry, Scorpio Jr. vs Veneno, Oriental, and Starman Jr.

This post includes some cool Mascara Dorada masks.

Brief interview with Laredo Kid.

Lineup

IWRG (SUN) 05/04/2014 Arena Naucalpan
1) Sky Ángel vs Skull Metal
2) Alfa & Omega vs Fulgor I & Fulgor II
3) 1 vs 23456789101112131415161718192021222324252627282930 [Rey del Ring]
participants will not be announced until day of event

IWRG”s annual Royal Rumble event. 911 won the match last year, though the title’s changed hands a few times sinec and Golden Magic last gained the belt in February. This is where IWRG using so many different luchadors actually works out, because anyone could show up in this match. Looks like IWRG isn’t quite sure who will be there themselves.

indy (SUN) 05/04/2014 Gimnasio Nuevo León
1) Golden Boy & Rey Demonio Jr. vs Dulce Kanela & Larry Miranda Jr.
2) Hijo De Centurion Negro, Pedro Navajas, Principe de Oro, Titanik vs Alberto Dos Rios, Black Spider, Galactar, Sky
3) Potro Jr., Silver Star, Tigre Universitario vs Bengali, Charles Lucero, Difunto I
4) Atlantis & Máximo vs Mr. Niebla & Último Guerrero
5) Blue Panther vs Averno [LLA AZTECA]
Blue Panther is champion

The usual 3-4 times a year show here, with the title which changes hands every time they have a title match. Panther versus Averno sounds like a good match, except…

indy (SUN) 05/04/2014 Arena Coliseo Monterrey
1) Chamaco Gurrola & Tequlita vs Mini Dfiunto & Mini Hator
2) Kentai, Medico Infenral, Príncipe Azteca vs Erick Ortiz, Face Man, Vudu
3) Gato Fantasma, Halcon Real, Tokio Lee vs Bengali, Difunto I, Potro Jr.
4) El Ninja, Magico, Ninja Jr. vs Centurión Negro, Centurion Negro Jr., Orlando Santa Cruz
5) Caifan vs Chucho Mar Jr., Pegasso, Panthro Jr., Ultimo Ninja, El Pulpo, Memo Valles, Chica de Arabia, Caifan Guerrero
6) Argenis, Argos, Cibernético, Sin Cara vs Averno, Monsther Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown

Full lineup to the show announced many moons ago, including Averno in the main event. This show starts at 5pm, the Gimnasio Nuevo Leon starts at 4:30. It may be possible for Averno to make both shows, though I don’t think that’s what actually happening here. Averno’s filmed a promo for this show.

Sin Cara is booked on 05/03 and 05/04, but no card has turned up for 05/02 – the day where there’s a mystery spot in AAA’s TV main event. It still appears there is a plan for Sin Cara to be there, but plans don’t always come thru.

DTU (FRI) 05/16/2014 Arena Querétaro
1) Jimmy, Kevin, Tony vs Maremoto, Sange De Dragon, Star Boy
2) Billytronix & Vengador vs Castigador & Optimius and Energy & Gremlin and Lanzeloth & Rocky Lobo
3) Crazy King & Miedo Extremo vs Galaxy & Kalibus and Jhonky & Slayer Pack
4) Hijo del Pantera & Pantera vs Artikus & Pesadilla and Black Fire & Chica Ye-Ye
5) Jinzo vs Shane Strickland, Kaleth, Flamita, Príncipe Halcón, Ángel del Misterio, Rey Celestial
6) Ángel o Demonio & Ovett vs Demente Extreme & Violento Jack and Crazy Boy & Dance Boy

Third show in the May DTU tour. I thought Hijo del Pantera just appeared on TV saying he was headed back to Japan for many months. Maybe that’s actually the semi-mysterious Pantera Jr. So many multiman matches.

Sombra, Rush and La Mascara versus everyone, En Busca de un Idolo

Terra

CMLL (FRI) 04/25/2014 Arena México [CMLL, Terra]
1) Dragon Lee & Sensei b Espiritu Negro & Zayco
Tecncios took 1/3.
2) Estrellita, Marcela, Silueta b La Seductora, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sugheit
Tecnicas took straight falls, clean. Near the end, Blanca wiped out Sugehit with her dive, and those two shoved each other post match.
3) Súper Halcón Jr. b Soberano Jr. [En Busca de un Idolo]
Valiente was guest judge for this show and Shocker returned to the panel. Halcon won via moonsault in 5:22. Súper Halcón Jr. scored a 8 8 8 5 for a 29. Soberano Jr. scored a 9 7 7 5 for a 28.
4) Hechicero b Star Jr. [En Busca de un Idolo]
Hechicero won via Mad Scientist Bomb. Hechicero scored a 10 9 10 8 for a 37. Star Jr. scored a 8 7 6 10 for a 31.
5) Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero b Atlantis, Máximo, Super Porky
Rudos took 1/3. After the match, UG reminded Atlantis of his threat to quit if CMLL didn’t give them the mask match, and pressed Atlantis to make a similar demand.
6) Mistico, Titán, Volador Jr. b Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Puma
Puma replaced Rey Escorpion.
7) Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Shocker b La Máscara, La Sombra, Rush
Mascara, Sombra and Rush crossed paths with Mistico, Titan and Volador in between matches. Sombra, of course, attacked Volador and that lead to Rush’s trio laying out Mistico’s trio. “Tecnicos” won fall 1, but lost the next two. Niebla challenged Mascara & Sombra to a tag title defense (though it doesn’t seem clear who Niebla would be teaming with.)

The concept pushed in post matches interviews was a Rush, Sombra and Mascara faction. No problem with Mascara in that group if he’s the one taking all the losses. Don’t think it’ll work out that way. He could also just be here to take one loss – he’s got to be here as long as they’re dealing with the tag team titles, but maybe not after. Terra uses the “Bad Boys” name that was briefly assigned to the Rush, Mascara, Titan trio. Rush & Mascara attacking their recent trio partner actually bugged me more than Rush attacking his own brother, but that’s the anti-Mistico feelings. It’ll be interesting to see how this is shown -if they bother to show it. (They really should’ve just put a clip up last night if it’s meant to be an important thing.)

CMLL can do rudo groups which don’t get along with other rudos – see the Revoulcionarios versus the Guerreros, and the Tuareg and the Cancerberos – but forming a distinct group of tecnicos who don’t get along with anyone else hasn’t been in the skill set previously. It would create a lot of different matchups, but it’s hard to believe CMLL is actually interested in pulling this off. Sombra teams with Mistico on Sunday and Titan on Tuesday; if he’s the back normal friendly chill Sombra, then we know this isn’t going to work out.

Didn’t seem clear which Princesa was going to be a tecnica. Seems like a bad idea for either one of them to be a tecnica. Many weeks of women’s matches to come until they do break up.

Current En Busca de un Idolo standings

285 Hechicero
204 Soberano Jr.
196 Super Halcon Jr.
191 Star Jr.
174 Cavernario
155 Cachorro
155 Dragon Lee
129 Guerrero Negro Jr.

Cachorro is short about 20-25 points because CMLL forgot to give him any fan poll points for the week. Super Halcon is listed as 197 points on the website, 1 more point than he should actually have.

AAA posted a PREVIEW OF THEIR TELEVISION SHOW!!!! Show starts 15 minutes earlier this week, with the opener (Argenis, Ludxor, Venum contra Super Fly, Eterno, and Carta Brava), the semimain (Blue Demon vs Villano IV) and the mixed tag title match (Faby & Drago vs Sexy & Pentagon vs Mary & Cuervo) from Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera. Simply advertising which matches will air on your television show is a thing I’ve been asking/begging/demanding for years and years and I really should’ve made it the headline when someone did it. I’m so pleased.

Espiritu Negro mentioned on Facebook that he signed a contract with CMLL on Friday. I have no idea what a contract with CMLL actually means. Maybe a vague promise of matches per month?

Averno and Sin Cara are listed as facing off on Tuesday, which is the earliest known match between the two. Averno’s not listed in any CMLL cards past Sunday for the moment.

Durango’s Fulgor and Rey Tempestad visited Mexico City. This is the Fulgor who was on the Arena Cuatuepec show last weekend, not either one of the IWRG ones. (There’s plenty of Rey Tempestads too.) Durango Fulgor said IWRG Fulgor contacted him on Facebook and wanted to meet him at the show to settle the name issue, but IWRG Fulgor didn’t show up. Still, if you’re coming from another part of the country and you know someone’s already using that name there, then it seems like it’s on you to change your name while you’re visiting. Both Durango luchadors mention no one’s running shows where they live, so luchadors from their area have been forced to go elsewhere to find work.

LuchaWorld has Alfredo recapping this week’s Tercera Caida.

Perros del Mal hype their 05/02 match against La Parka, Cibernetico and a mystery person. That sure seemed like Sin Cara’s debut when it was announced, but it’s far less certain now.

Los Dinimitas say CMLL needs more guys like Rush & Shocker and less Mistico clones.

Bufete del Amor won the main event of this week’s Puebla bull ring fair free show.

recap

taped 2014-04-01 @ Arena México

Bengala does Sombra de Plata’s cradle very well.

Bengala & Flyer vs Akuma & Ramstein: I was kind of concerned about Bengala getting hurt with all the unnecessary face kicks Akuma was doing, and then Ramstein left the match after a Flyer fireman’s drop. I guess it depends on how you do it, or it’s all totally random. Losing Ramstein didn’t derail this, because there wasn’t much to derail. Flyer had no idea to do when there wasn’t a second técnico to feed him for moves, but Bengala is smart and realized that means you just end the match. They actually counted out Ramstein, which is different for an injury.

this doesn’t look right

Acero, Astral, Pequeño Halcón vs Demus 3:16, Mercurio, Pequeño Olímpico: Not an inspiring group of técnicos, but it could’ve been worse. It turned out okay. Unsure if the spot where the rudos got control of the match was a planned missed dropkick or if Astral just screwed up. Astral was off aim wise on other spots, so there’s a way I’m leaning here. This turned into build up for the cage match at the end, though it was probably a little to late for that. Pierroth was shown in the crowd, and seemed to be in significantly better condition than we last saw him, which is the best thing on this show by far.

Raziel is sneaky agile

Hombre Bala Jr., Oro Jr., Súper Halcón Jr. vs Cancerbero, Raziel, Virus: There’s not enough of the Cancerberos teaming up as a trio, so it was good to get it here and good for them to show why they’re a fun team by running off the técnicos by the end. This was a good match. Raziel had a very good match and looked incredible in the first fall. Oro got to work with Virus and seemed capable of being in this match, which is nice for him. End of the second fall was odd, with Halcón stopping the beatdown by suddenly sliding out on a whip and Oro attempting to put on a nudo – if that’s what that was, it’s wasn’t really good. Virus did a similar concept much better in the third fall, but that’s the difference between the two.

Hombre Bala splash off the ramp

triple tope

Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Boby Zavala, Misterioso Jr., Pólvora: 15 minutes of action in a 10 minute match, though they might have gotten it done in 9 had Delta been a little bit faster. They were working at the kind of pace where guys were almost breaking up pinfalls before the cover had been made. There was no obvious reason why they were going double speed from the start. They kept it together well considering all the wanted to get in and the little time they had to do it, but there wasn’t enough to this match to really get into it, or even take a breath.

involuntary tornillo

La Sombra, Mistico, Tritón vs Averno, Mephisto, Puma: Nuevo Valores is a good concept with some flaws. Puma and Triton were billed as getting a chance in a main event, but there really wasn’t much time for them with the focus on Averno and Místico for next week. We got brief teases of what they could do – Puma confounding Sombra with his leg kicks was interesting – but this wasn’t much about them. Match was fine for the build up. Averno escaped La Mistica and beat Místico clean with his finish, and it’s not the only time he’d do that. That’s a major difference in how CMLL protects this version of the character as opposed to the last. Congrats to the rudos for managing to throw all three técnicos over the técnicos over the barricade at about the same time. That should be instant fall win. Instead, they had to wait until Mephisto found Sombra too annoying to go on and took him out with a Devil’s Wings.

Puma is just strong enough

tonight’s Arena Mexico show, June AAA TV stops, Rey del Aire

Tonight’s Arena Mexico main event is Rush, La Sombra, and La Mascara versus Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas and Shocker – or at least Shocker’s the plan. He’s missed the last week and a half of En Busca de un Idol. CMLL sometimes sneaks in changes in their show previews, but Shocker is still listed there. Shocker himself said on Twitter that he would be at Arena Mexico tonight. The preview pushes Rush & Sombra’s hated (and hateful) tecnico act of late, but this still looks like a setup to a La Mascara/Rush tag team title defense.

Tonight’s En Busca de un Idolo matches, starting off week 4, are Super Halcon Jr. versus Soberano and Hechicero versus Star Junior. They’ll reach the halfway point of this round after tonight’s matches, which means only 4 more Guerrero Negro Jr. & 3 more Super Halcon Jr. matches where they get yelled at afterward and have no real chance to win. Very little of this competition appears to be thought about in advance – note the behind the scenes videos lasted a whole one week, and that Fox Sports 2 is under the belief they’re airing these matches at some point even though CMLL hasn’t mentioned it – but if they had thought a little more about this year’s format, they would’ve realized it meant the last few finishers would be treated like pinatas for two months, damage which will care forward for a long time. Polvora got similarly mocked last year, but was a champion and so got a chance to redeem himself in other spotlight matches. Those matches are probably not coming for Negro & Halcon.

I’ve been pretty persistent in believing Guerrero Negro Jr. needs a different gimmick (he’s 30 and looks older), but if they CMLL has any plans of using him at all, they’d be smart having him disappear for six weeks after this over and come back in with a new name and a mask because he’s never getting over after this without a big change. Maybe Super Halcon will be treated differently back in his tag team (one which CMLL hasn’t had any particular plans for in a while, so maybe not), or maybe Super Halcon will give into Tirantes and quit. I don’t want to see anyone lose their jobs, but if you’re having people speaking for CMLL declaring specific luchadors are not good enough to be in CMLL, maybe they shouldn’t actually be in CMLL? Or maybe this week is the start of a delightful and thought out redemption story for one or both, but that seems the most unlikely outcome of all.

Note that the Busca matches are one spot down on the card than usual, which might mean a shorter Terra show. No one will know until the moment CMLL cuts off the broadcast.

Marisela Pena told fans on Twitter that AAA would be going to Quetetaro, Puebla, and Orizaba in June. Puebla is specifically mentioned as a TV taping, and the other two are probably meant to be ones as well. Either Puebla or Orizaba is likely Verano de Escandalo, though AAA hasn’t started promoting that event yet.

Guerrero Maya Jr. and Tiger both feel good about their chances in Reyes del Aire. Maya says this is the first time he’s been in one because he was sick previously. It is true he was ill and missed the 2011 one, but he was part of the 2012 and giant sized 2013 ones – he made it to the final three in his group last year. Meanwhile, Tiger talks about being in third and fourth in previous times, which only is right if he means he was third out one year and fourth out the other year. It’s almost like there’s so many tournaments in CMLL that what happens about them is completely forgotten by the next year, especially by those who participated in them. (Should still be a good match!)

Anime and Pirata Negro are filming a short movie – but since the picture an article used to promote the movie is Pirata Negro’s hand is covering up certain parts of Anime’s anatomy, people are apparently talking more about the picture. A poster on SuperLuchas, a successful website which seems to only occasional post about lucha libre, is upset about the attention this type of scandal thing in social media instead of people writing about the traditional lucha libre – in a post which shares the photo and no information about traditional lucha libre. It will also get a lot of clicks because it’s a picture of a half naked woman on the internet, not because anyone wants to have a discussion about the things people should be talking about. The irony is Anime and Pirata Negro (who wrestle around the Mexico City area) explain they’re doing this movie to get people to write about them since they haven’t gotten opportunities or attention otherwise. That seems to almost have worked, except people probably still don’t know their names since the picture seems to be going around without the article. Nice try though.

Half naked people in a lucha libre reminds me that Lucha Va Voom is running Cinco de Mayo shows. They’re in Los Angeles on May 1st and 2nd and over here in May 3rd. The Chicago show lists Casandro, Matt Classic, and Joey Ryan among the luchadors. I probably should go but I probably should go to a lot more shows and instead stare at the mountain of material for recaps.

LuchaWorld has a recap of Week 3 of En Busca de un Idolo.

Rob has highlights of late February 2001 CMLL.

Segunda Caida reviews Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas vs Marco Corleone, Máximo, Super Porky.

El Hijo del Santo’s column is about the early life of Blue Panther. He notes Halcon Suriano (grandfather of Pequeno Halcon) was an important mentor in Panther’s life.

Vaquerita talks about her return, says she’d like to have a title match with Amapola.

Demonio Maya talks about his career so far.

Electroshock wants a match against any member of la Sociedad, one on one. Don’t listen to him!

recap

Leo DOWN

taped 2014-03-25 @ Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
Gallo, Leo, Starman vs Camorra, Sádico, Shigeo Okumura: The problem with pushing Leo as a young upcoming técnico is Leo does not appear to be much good at this point in his career. He is young, maybe he’ll get there, but Camorra also isn’t a guy who is going to cover his mistakes. The good part of this feud is it’s hair feud between two people who have hair. The not-good part of this feud is everything else. It’s not horrendous, but it’s strange it’s even happening. Same thing for this match. Sadico lost his mohawk and was a little better last week, but came off as more interesting than his fellow Guadalajara youngster.

maybe Leo should’ve just stayed down
Bucanero consoled

taped 2014-03-30 @ Arena Coliseo
Fuego vs Ephesto in a lightning match: This show aired four matches this week because it was important to show Fuego, who has a whole elaborate dance routine (occasionally with back up dancers!) that’s made him more interesting to the general public, losing to going nowhere Ephesto. This is the best example of the random carelessness which most CMLL booking decisions are made. Speaking of random, this match had Ephesto use his big shoulderbreaker on Fuego, walk to the apron, put his hand on the top rope, and hurry back into pin. I have no idea why. Match was turning taking for the most part, though Fuego did get in a lot of dives before his eventual loss.

Diamante Azul, La Máscara, Titán vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys: Clipped down low stakes trios match where Titan was still flipping around. And so he got beat too. This was a big whatever. No one looked bad, nothing you need to see.

Maximo

Atlantis, Marco Corleone, Máximo vs Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas, Rey Escorpión: Atlantis/Niebla build up for the following week’s trios matches, which pretty much follows the same formula. Rudos attack but Atlantis rallies back to win the first fall anyway, then Niebla wins the second fall with a splash. Third fall is the only different (and some of what happens in between the finishes.) Máximo and Rey Escorpion brought up their feud and Negro Casas and Marco Corleone have an established routine and that’s what this was.

Terra Sunday: Reyes del Aire, Atlantis, Sombra, Mistico vs Revolucionarios

Terra Tuesday: Dragon Lee vs Cavernario, Cachorro vs Guerrero Negro Jr.
