Bengala & Oro Jr. vs Akuma & Herodes Jr.: It’s easy to spot bodybuilding season coming up; Akuma’s lost weight and found muscle (and Oro Jr. is clearly in training too.) Maybe the weight loss help – Akuma generally looked a lot sharper here than he has in his previous appearances. Both rudos had good matches and the match looked better when they were in charge. Oro Jr. had one really messed up spot in the second fall and the third fall wasn’t as good as the rest of the match, but this was pretty good for a normal opener.
Bam Bam & Último Dragoncito vs Mercurio & Pequeño Warrior: Not much, and definitely less than you’d expect with the names involved. They didn’t screw things up, but they didn’t do all that much either. Not sure if it was just Tuesday gear or if the change from a trios affected things, but Warrior was in goofball mode and no one else seemed really motivated. Mercurio really needs a better look than “slightly thinner, slightly more evil Bam Bam”
Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa vs Namajague, Shigeo Okumura, Virus: Good match kept way too short. They built towards Delta/Maya for the tag titles and Cometa/Namajague well without it tripping over each other. Delta & Maya even got to break out actual tag team moves. This group of guys are very smooth working with each other and motived to have as good a match as possible in the time they had.
Blue Panther, Mistico, Thunder vs Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.: again, what they did was generally fine but they didn’t do a lot of it. It makes sense to just focus on a few big spots in a Tuesday match, but it doesn’t make it that interesting to watch. The end of the third fall seemed unusually sloppy; I have no idea if Mr. Niebla changed his mind on the top rope splash or just fell off.
Atlantis & La Sombra vs La Máscara & Rush in a Number One Contenders Match for the CMLL World Tag Team Championship: Technically okay (except for the missed pin break up in the third fall), but it never seemed to click into high gear. There was an intensity and speed level, and the crowd rarely got into the near falls. This felt like it could’ve been an outstanding match and it was just fine. Rush and La Sombra tried to make ever fight they had seem like it was hugely important; I wish whoever was programming had the same interest. They did have something working against each other, but it was also a lot of move turn taking.
