taped 2012-08-05 @ Arena Ciudad de Mexico
Octagón, Semental, Texano, Toscano vs La Parka, Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown : not really much of a match, more guys hitting people on their own team repeatedly to set up the other side getting control. I’m not sure anyone’s advantage lasted a minute (and if it did, it was because they were waiting for people to get up.) Crowd only sort of cared about Parka vs Octagon, but not as much when they started to fight.
Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Máscara Año 2000 Jr. for the mask : This match was probably the best representation of this card as a whole. As a match, it really wasn’t that much. AAA has no confidence in Mascara Año 2000 Jr. to deliver on this show and immediately started with every interference spot they could work in to get him heat without having to actually have a match. (Maybe with reason. The best thing he did was play dead.) This was quite nearly the match the non-wrestler does against the wrestler. Mascara and Wagner did some moves at times, but there wasn’t really anything like a wrestling sequence. It was just a lot of blood, on an very plasma filled show, a loud of outside help, and a ‘shocking’ turn. (And a fake fan hitting the ring.) Maybe you won’t get the blood, but it’s everything else you’ll find in the main event of your local overbooked indy show.
The important difference is the crowd here bought all it up. They were losing their minds when they thought Wagner was about to be robbed of his mask, they were overyjoyed when he kept it. There would’ve been a riot if Mascara had won, and there nearly was one when Silver King threw a drink back at the crowd. It was an incredible sight, and that’s the other half of TripleMania: It was not high on wrestling match quality, but it made up for it in spectacle. This match might not be a star ratings classic, but it was a crazy scene that was very compelling after Silver King turned. It came across strong on TV, stronger than anything else that aired, but probably not even half as strong as it did live.
If you went to this show wanting to see one of the greatest matches of the year, you probably were unsatisfied. If you went to see something memorable grand, you probably went home happy.
