recap

Mascara Dorada

Héctor Garza, Máscara Dorada, Toscano vs Mephisto, Rey Bucanero, Terrible: short two fall match that didn’t do anything particularly interesting with the time. Probably better the time is spent elsewhere, though Dorada and Toscano both seemed willing to do more than they got here.

Volador

Volador Jr. vs Jushin Lyger in the Leyenda de Plata Tournament final: An okay to good standard CMLL singles match; they needed to do more before they started the dives and the near falls, but they didn’t. They did have a lot of good near falls, but it wasn’t a loud enough crowd (or a well miced enough crowd) to really get into it. A bit disappointing, in line with the rest of Lyger’s 2011 run.

Puebla, Titan/Polvora, Negro Casas on his feud, indy notes, lineups

CMLL (MON) 01/23/2012 Arena Puebla [Porra Fresa]
1) Lestat & Milenium b Fuerza Chicana & Siki Ozama Jr.
Rudos took 1/3.
2) Hombre Bala Jr., Stigma, Super Halcon Jr. b Loco Max, Puma King, Skándalo
Rudos took 1/3.
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Pegasso, Titán b Cancerbero, Euforia, Raziel
Rudos took 2/3.
4) Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Kraneo, Morphosis, Olímpico
Rudos took 1/3. This one with a bit of issue, Olimpico sneaking in a foul on Altantis. Invasors challenged for a title shot, but Atlantis refused to give it to them under the circumstances.
5) Dragón Rojo Jr., Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero b Averno, Mr. Águila, Psicosis
Averno jumped Ultimo Guerrero as he was entering. His team took fall 1, beating up Zacarias along the way. Team Averno continued to work over Guerrero with the other two out of action – Dragon’s leg injury showed up here again – but Niebla recovered to start the comeback and he and Guerrero beat Psicosis and Aguila in the second. Third fall came down to Averno & Guerrero, Guerrero winning clean with the Guerrero Special.

CMLL (TUE) 01/24/2012 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Javier Cruz Jr. & Thunder Boy b Acertijo & In Memoriam
2) Arkángel de la Muerte & Èvola b Black Metal & Starman
Match came down to Evola reversing a ‘rana on Starman and grabbing the ropes for the pin.
3) Triton b Ráfaga
4) Titán b Pólvora
Titan asked for a title shot after winning this non-title match over the national welterweight championship.
5) La Sombra, Marco Corleone, Máscara Dorada b Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Tiger
Marco’s win streak remains intact over the new TRT. Tecnicos took 1/3, Terrible fouling Marco in mid-hipswivel

The Gladiatores are broadcasting tonight’s IWRG show. Check in to see if Toscano actually showed.

Negro Casas brags that he and Panther have had more than just “hitting, kicking, or slapping.” I guess he’s right, they’ve only been 95% that. (The rest has been fouls, martinetes, and suspensions.) The idea that it’s been a technical war as much as a brawl does not square with any match I’ve seen in this feud.

X-Project announced Raven, who was really good 17 years ago,  as being part of their debut show on 02/19.

Davey Richards vs Daga is taking place on 02/19 for new promotion “DDD”. No mention a location or what those letters stand for. LuchaPOP is also on 02/19 – was there some deal with tickets from the US that weekend or something?

Rob has highlights of 04/21 & 04/30/95 AAA and 1/3/12 of CMLL

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

top six stories of the last two weeks

  • MS-1 passed away.
  1. TV situation is still not good. CMLL’s main show and AAA were completely off of Televisa for a week (the week “CMLL” won the WO.com poll for best show), but were back the next week in compressed slot. It looks like they’ll soon be getting back their separate days (CMLL on Saturday and AAA on Sunday), but not their two hour time slots; both are restricted to 60 minutes, 35 after commercials. AAA’s syndicated a Televisa Regional telecast to make due, but it’s very hard to find.
  2. AAA’s first TV taping of the year picked up where the last one left off, with the El Consejo faction all over the show. Ex-CMLL preliminary wrestlers Mortiz and Semental were added to the faction, which seemed focused on antagonizing new rudo Octagon. The pre-existing AAA rudos and tecnicos all talked about running El Consejo off while refusing to work together. Unrelated to the rest of the show, Jack Evans and Perro Aguayo continued to feud in the main event.
  3. The CMLL & NJPW FantasticMania shows sold out both nights. Sombra and Volador main evented the second night with a great match. All the CMLL wrestlers did well, with Rush notably aquitting himself very well in his Japan debut.
  4. An interview with Volador Jr. revealed CMLL programming is unhappy with him for his colorful and ever changing masks. They’d prefer he just stuck to one look, believing the fans are confused. Volador believes the fans are not that dumb.
  5. A trios main event featuring TV host/ringmaster Ernesto Chavana sold out Arena Coliseo Monterrey.
  6. Marco Corleone is 8-0 since returning to CMLL, and the promotion is starting to play up the win streak.

Other Stories

  • Bobby Bonales will be the luchador legend honored at Dos Leyendas
  • Reyes del Atlantida (Atlantis’s crew) was busy – they kept their trios titles over one set of Invasors in Guadalajara, will soon defend the same titles against another combo of Invasors in Puebla, and have some title match (tag?) with the Guerreros coming up in Arena Mexico.
  • Blue Panther and Negro Casas resumed their feud.
  • Cancerberos vs Tuareg continue to feud.
  • Triton (IWRG) says he’s won the rights to the name, and just needs to talk to CMLL to work out an agreement.
  • Dragon Lee is out until mid January with a knee injury.
  • Drago is out with a facial injury. Dragon Rojo and Ultimo Dragoncito are also dealing with injuries; it’s been a harsh Year of the Dragon so far.
