Atlantis has lots of enemies, Abismo Negro returns, guitars, Sin Cara/Averno

announcement/reminder: I’m running a chat on Friday. 8:30 pm CT. We’ll probably end up talking about 12 other things things and then suddenly notice the cage match has finished. (food update: I may be cooking the steak that’s been in my fridge for the last two months. I’ve never cooked a steak. This could be the last chat ever, don’t miss it.)

CMLL (TUE) 09/27/2011 Arena Mexico [CMLL, Kaiser Sports, Record]
1) Bengala & Trueno b Camorra & Zayco
2) Goya Kong, Marcela, Ray b Amapola, La Seductora, Mima Shimoda
3) Ángel de Plata, Metal Blanco, Palacio Negro b Cancerbero, Nosferatu, Raziel
4) Blue Panther, Super Porky, Toscano b Ephesto, Euforia, Vangelis
Tecnicos took 2/3. Toscano got Ephesto with a ‘rana for the win.
5) Atlantis, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara DQ Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.
Straight fall win, with two straight DQs. Ultimo Guerrero pulled Atlantis’ mask in the first, Atlantis had Volador up in the Atlantida in the second, and Niebla broke that up by fouling Atlantis. Niebla took his mask too.

First match back for Trueno after a bad fall 11 days ago.

The Return Of Abismo Negro

AAA’s mystery taping yesterday afternoon Arena Lopez Mateos turned out to be episodes of a new show, El Regreso del Abismo Negro. This is a reality show where a bunch of young wrestlers will fight for the right to be new Abismo Negro. In a Luchas 2000 interview talking about the show, Gran Apache said there would be 25 wrestlers at first, then cut down to 12, then finally down to a winner sometime early next year, who would still have to earn the name from there. There were 12 candidates pictured on this show:

  • Black Mamba (Monterrey luchador, in LuchaPOP of late)
  • Relampago (the AAA one)
  • Hijo del Pirata Morgan (the taller/thin one)
  • Alas de Plata
  • Argos (which is a bit of surprise)
  • Black Fire
  • Dark Dragon
  • Abadon
  • Ultimo Vampiro
  • Lasserman
  • Kronos
  • Garra de Aguila

AAA’s surely got a TV deal and a sponsor lined up, but neither is obvious from the pictures which have turned up. There were other main AAA wrestlers at this show, so it won’t just be the contenders wrestling. This appears a separate contest than the Quien para por Corona contest that’s going on.

If you check out the Facebook comments on AAA’s site (or the ones R de Rudo grabbed), the response to a new Abismo Negro is largely negative. That should be expected; a new version of a past character is not a new idea for AAA, but it doesn’t make it a popular one; LA Park has always been cheered more than La Parka, no matter what AAA tried to do. AAA made a mistake of proclaiming there would be no new Abismo Negro in the days after the original died, when this was the most likely outcome all along.

Other News

At last night’s SmackDown tapings, Hunico Sin Cara revealed a black outfit. Hijo del Santo vs Santo Negro Octagon vs Pentagon BUSHI vs BLACK BUSHI Sin Cara vs Black Sin Cara will take place this Sunday. As mentioned before this feud really started, self vs clone feuds have never lasted past one match in WWE. Hunico was told he’d be going to Mexico next month, but WWE rushing the feud on this month’s PPV means it may be over by the next one (or sooner, depending on how that match goes), and they’d need a new opponent for Mistico Sin Cara. Averno may be getting a call soon, which makes things like that trios title feud in Puebla a little extra interesting.

I’m pretty sure there were AAA tweets/facebook comments saying the winner of a ladder match in Leon would get a guitar which they could cash in for a title shot at a later time. (A guitar!) They didn’t actually name the match, but I can find a message where they say Nanyzh Rock will be part of the match, so that would mean the Electroshock, Heavy Metal, Joe Lider vs Chessman, Silver King, Último Gladiador match. I would like to see Ultimo Gladiador or Chessman get a title shot. I bet they’re not. Anyway, my problem is the initial tweet revealing the title shot/guitar bit seems to have vanished. I may have hallucinated the whole thing, not sure.

Ayumi announced she’d be returning to CMLL for three weeks in early October.

Blue Panther says he hopes to not repeat his 2008 Anniversario loss (to Villano V) and is aiming for Negro Casas’ hair in the cage.

IWL announced they were bringing in Davey Richards in October. That would normally make sense for an iPPV, but all the Ring of Honor contracted guys are only allowed to appear on their iPPVs. It’s a definite appear to ROH type fans in Mexico, but I don’t know that enough of them exist (and come out to shows) to make that work.

2) Metatrón & Virgo vs Ángel del Mal & Exterminador
3) Ángel Azteca Jr. & Höruz vs Infierno & Malefico
4) Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Cancerbero, Euforia, Pólvora
5) La Sombra, Rush, Shocker vs Mr. Águila, Olímpico, Psicosis

Semimain looks fun.

CMLL (FRI) 10/14/2011 Auditorio de Tijuana
1) Mr. Maldito & Platino vs Cinico & Viento
2) Mascarita Dorada & X-Torm vs Demus 3:16 & Zarco

4) Ángel de Oro, El Hijo de Rey Misterio, Máximo vs Arandú, Casandro, TJ Boy
5) La Máscara, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada vs Averno, Psicosis, Volador Jr.

Casandro vs Maximo should be interesting. Note Hijo de Rey Misterio’s presence.  There’s an AAA show here the prior Friday, with Wagner defending the AAA Latin American title versus Park (so, DQ) and Misterio is not on that card so far.

recap

Let me save us all some time: a waste of time of tournament, where the crowd didn’t care about the matches. I’m pretty sure the Forjando un Idolo format worked a lot better. Fans seemed happy to see Sombra win, and the eventual real match should be fun, but this was a waste of time.

Mascara Dorada keeps title, MEXPW, Mr. Aguila, Amapola, Ray

CMLL (SUN) 09/25/2011 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Thunder Boy b In Memoriam
2) Mr. Trueno & Rey Trueno b El Alteño & Hierro
3) Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Palacio Negro b Cancerbero, Euforia, Raziel
4) Averno, Ephesto, Pólvora b Ángel de Oro, Hijo del Fantasma, Sagrado
Despite the other tecnicos diving on rudos, Averno still pinned Hijo del Fantasma with a Devil’s Wing.
5) Máscara Dorada b Mephisto [CMLL WELTER]
Seconds were Averno and Palacio Negro. Dorada took 1/3 to keep the title.

It looks like MEXPW is launching today. There’s a press release on the site, hyping a Perros del Mal/XPW hardcore show in Los Angeles in January (exact date/location TBD), following up on the junkyard show using that name last month. They’re using plenty of footage from that show too. Damain is the lead guy from the Mexican side and Perro Jr. isn’t mentioned, which might be why they’re using the MEXPW name.

Mr. Aguila says he wants to beat either Rey Bucanero or Maximo in the cage match. Bucanero because Rey used an illegal piledriver (a Canadian Destroyer) to beat him in last December’s hair match. Maximo is more complicated; Aguila thinks his act is denigrates the homosexual community, denigrates lucha libre, and is out of shape. Aguila says Maximo earlier told him he was a big fan of Aguila when he wrestled in the US, but now Maximo is a guy who doesn’t know what he wants.

Amapola explains that in her REINA title match, all the fans were for Ayumi, the style was for Ayumi, and even the weather was in Ayumi’s favor, but Amapola showed she has no limits and was able to keep her title. Amapola is looking forward to facing Ray while she’s in Mexico and wants a title shot. Amapola shouldn’t actually be eligible for that title, but they really haven’t explained it in Mexico and Tanahashi was somehow in the Universal tournament so I really shouldn’t scoff at this.

Ray is looking forward to trying real Mexico tacos and admiring Mexican architecture.

No results from Puebla yet, but it looks like UG fouled Liger in the semimain, and the tecnicos all pinned the rudos in the main (which probably sets up a trios title match.)

Los Campeons de la Lucha Libre, the 2008 movie by the Muchas Luchas characters staring Dragon Rojo Jr. (where ex-Diamante Negro got his gimmick) is being released on DVD. You can get it on Amazon; I should get it on Amazon.

Rob has tons of 2003 CMLL highlight videos: early Jan ’03, late Jan ’03, early Feb ’03, late Feb ’03, early Mar ’03, late Mar ’03, early Apr ’03, and late Apr ’03. Also, more recent video: Verano de Escandalo ’11, 09/01/11 AAA, and 09/13/11 CMLL.

La Catedral has posts about the five worst Anniversary shows of the last thirty years, wishes Ray defended his title, and is happy Los Rayo Tapatios made the anniversary show but wishes they were doing the mask match there. I’m not totally convinced CMLL’s still interested in doing the Rayo Tapatios vs Gen11 mask match; they’ve turned the fire on that one way down.

5) Blue Panther, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.
6) Mr. Niebla vs Atlantis

Both the Black Warrior tecnico problems and the Arkangel/Fuego (or Arkangel/Skandalo vs Fuego/Stuka!) continue in the midcard, while the Niebla/Atlantis match happens right away. Not sure which is the second match to air here. Probably not Cholo/Ramstein.

This is Panther, Felino and Negro’s first matches since the cage match, and all three are real candidates to lose. Loco Max is a strong bet to lose in Guadalajara.

CMLL (SUN) 10/02/2011 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Javier Cruz vs El Divino

1) Black Tiger & Tigre Rojo vs Sauron & Siki Osama
2) Metal Blanco, Palacio Negro, Stigma vs Hooligan, Loco Max, Nitro

4) Héctor Garza, Jushin Lyger, Super Porky vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Escorpion, Último Guerrero
5) Máximo, Rush, Toscano vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

Main event isn’t listed as a title match but it’s the third week, so it probably is. That would be a criminal title change.

Tiger Rojo turned rudo on Black Tiger, then the whole thing was forgot. Maybe it won’t be forgot.

First defense for the Perros. Perros took falls 2/3, Damian 666 beating Black Terry just as Freyser submitted Bestia 666. Terry was the captain, so his team lost. Cage match challenges followed.

Other News

Volador Jr. beat previous champion Sombra (and La Mascara) to win the Azteca Championship, the title used in Gimnasio Nuevo Leon for the CMLL spots shows in the building (once every three or four months.) No one’s managed to win the title and keep it more than one show.

Mascara Dorada beat Mephisto to keep the CMLL Welterweight championship.

IWL announced Tony Rivera vs Zumbido will take place on October 22nd. I hope no one blockades the arena to prevent the show from happening.

La Catedral writes about the good aspects of CMLL that the rest of the promotion should be built around.

Same promoter as the Dos Caras show at Arena Naucalpan. This is billed as “Double Power”, the name UWA used when promoting AAA/UWA shows in 1994. It did not end well for the UWA (the AAA-centric coverage of the WON points the finger at Canek causing all sorts of problems), but anything old enough gets brought back in lucha libre and so here’s an AAA/UWA show. Gran Apache II!
