AAA on Televisa #951 (08/14/2010)

Centro Banamex, 07/25/2010

Mascarita Divina, Mini Charly Manson, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Histeria, Mini Psicosis: I like when TV has traces of a story the rest of the promotion has clearly moved on from. When is Histeria getting his title shot anyway?

Cinthia Moreno, Fabi Apache, Mari Apache vs Christina Von Eerie, Jennifer Blake, Sexy Star: this was okay, if I remember right. This entire show felt like a spot show that just happened to be televised (and hurried, and in a single fall), more so than past years at the Expo.

Chris Stone, El Elegido, Relampago vs Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz: hey, remember that thing they did with Electroshock, with weeks of skits about how wasn’t not happy with Wagner, and then in the match where he actually teamed, he played it straight the whole way before doing the turn, which actually doesn’t really make any sense? This was that again.

It took six weeks to do an interview about Tiger/Relampago, and the whole interview was “we’re not going to explain it AT ALL.” This is probably less a mystery story and more the story is still a mystery to them, I’d bet.

Dr. Wagner Jr. & Extreme Tiger vs Electroshock & Último Gladiador: a return to the halcyon days of Electroshock killing cruiserweights for no particular reason. This was the prototypical Wagner match that is awesome if you’re a foot away from as he punches some guy, but not as entertaining on TV. Also, Vampiro may still be beating up Dr. Wagner.

Cibernético, Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown vs Alex Koslov, Hernandez, Konnan, Zorro: or, “Psycho vs the Legion in the same match they usually have, with Cibernetico & Konnan watching from the apron.” Not that I want to see Konnan in matches, but why is Konnan in matches? Why is Konnan in matches? Why is Konnan in matches? Why is Konnan in matches? Someone hide his boots.

Perro Aguayo Jr. returns to AAA
Uploaded by thecubsfan. – Videos from SiTV and top Latino channels.

Really, the only thing noteworthy on this show was that bit right up there. Did the Perros ever come up with an excuse? Like a phantom concussion suffered earlier in the day? And yet, AAA still gave him the win at Verano de Escandalo. I have no doubt Perro is a smarter person than me.

By the way, I finally twigged to the reason for the continual LAX mentions: Homicide is coming in at some point and they’re getting the tag titles, and everyone’s got it worked it advance. (And now, writing this ahead of time, I’ve just seen Homicide got let go. So speed up the time table here.)

Lucha Libre USA #5 (08/13/2010)

taped 08/07/2010

Pequeno Halloween for the win

The weakest in-ring show so far? Not that it was a big surprise: Lizmark/Solid wasn’t supposed to be a good match (though I couldn’t figure out why it was supposed to be a life threatening beating), and the mixed tag couldn’t be a good match. The opening trios was OK, but nothing special.

Knowing the taping results, I can understand why they had three straight segments dealing with rudos beating up tencicos (Marco reacting to Lizmark beating Solid, Rellik/Malice, Team Evil Mexico vs PR Powers), because they’re setting up bits for the next two weeks, but they were a bit much stacked up together like they did.

This was the first taping after the show started airing, and I wonder if it might be the first commentary taping since the first reviews came in. Lalo and Nigel were not good, but I don’t recall a moment where I wanted to lunge thru my TV and strangle someone. A marked improvement!

There’s still doing things where they expect the people watching the show to make big leaps in logic the show has forgotten. Not just the Big News!! that may have been the tournament brackets, but no one ever makes it particularly clear that Lizmark Jr.’s letter was about facing Solid in the tournament. The first time I watched this, I thought it was actually something about Sydistiko, since Lizmark was yelling about him and they ought to be writing him out of the show about now.

I would watch a show about Pequeno Halloween. This may be that show, everyone else is just slow in figuring out.

Perros, AAA/IWRG, no Rayo vs Atlantis (yet?), Sexy Star

PdM (TUE) 08/17 Arena Aficion [Estrellas del Ring]
1) Konami, Pesadilla, Ragde b Caricia, Diva Salvaje, Guerrero Negro
2) Celestial, el Ángel, Tony Rivera b Bestia, Maldito Jr., X-Fly
3) Damián 666, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Halloween b Hijo de LA Park, Hijo del Lizmark, Súper Nova

Looks like a strong fan turnout. All matches actually ended with a pinfall, which may be a first for this promotion. Perro got Nova in the main event with a little help from Halloween.

Today’s the big AAA taping at IWRG’s place. Well, big for IWRG probably. AAA’s VP of Creative Talent tweeted last night about going on vacation for a week, so I’m thinking he’s skipping out on this one. (Go to the IWL show, pretty sure that guy can’t afford to leave.) AAA notes this is Konnan’s first show back in Arena Naucalpan with AAA since 1996, though he did work there a year later with Promo Azteca.

The big match of the taping is AAA tag team champions Silver King & Ultimo Gladiador vs IWRG tag team champions Hijo de Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., with only the AAA belts on the line. In the undercard, El Brazo teams up with Decnnis & Billy Boy after turning down their offer to join the Militia last week. That’s probably not an offer you’re allowed to turn down.

According to CMLL.com’s latest lineup update, the Rayo vs Atlantis singles match for Sunday is off. It’s now a trios, La Máscara, Místico, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Volador Junior. I wonder if they just decided to save that match for an Arena Mexico show?

Making the rounds on the internet is this note from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter about Sexi Star’s WWE tryout

As for Sexy Star, they thought her work was terrible, her English was terrible and they also thought she was overweight and wasn’t pretty enough without the mask. John Laurinaitis told the officials at FCW that when it comes to hiring women, the standard is if they aren’t pretty enough to be in Playboy, then the company wouldn’t want them.

Harsh. It’s not actually news that the WWE’s standards for women is weird and dumb – picking people based on how they look in still pictures is not the best plan when their job is to move – but it’s been this way for a long time. The true awfulness here is they took $1,000 of Sexi Star’s money, then told others about how little they thought of her. If people are going to tell me off, I prefer not to pay for it. All considered, Sexi handled this well on Twitter.

In other popular stories which probably mean little, the Rudos de Neza fan club were treated badly by CMLL security for chanting profanity. I have the sneaking suspicion there is more to this story and I don’t think think CMLL is necessarily in the wrong here.

IWL will be giving away free tickets to the first 100 people who show up. Seeing as the guesses were 100 paid for the first show, they might as well just make it a total free show.

we take requests/ACM

AAA has a kid’s web game where they can wear prizes by playing simple games.

The Latin Lover show in Mazatlan with main CMLL & Guadalajara undercard luchadors is tonight. That newspaper usually posts recaps, so there will probably be more about it in a day or two. There had been talk of Latin Lover being on the Anniversary card, but he wasn’t listed on the card CMLL sent out yesterday.

Ultimo Guerrero, told Shocker wants a shot at the heavyweight championship again, says he’s beaten Shocker five times and Shocker has brought his father as a second all those times, so maybe Shocker should bring his mom when he loses for a sixth.

El Siglo de Torreon has an interview with Angel de Oro & Angel de Plata. Mostly the same career bio as the last time thru.

One of the most striking exhibits at the Tulancingo fair was a new statue of El Santo.
