03/19 Arena Mexico Lineup (Dos Leyendas)

CMLL (FRI) 03/19 Arena Mexico
1) Ángel de Oro, Fuego, Stuka Jr. vs Dragon Rojo Jr., Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
2) Hijo del Fantasma, Máscara Dorada, Valiente vs Mephisto, Terrible, Texano Jr.
3) Blue Panther, Brazo de Plata, La Máscara vs Negro Casas, Ray Mendoza Jr., Taichi
4) Héctor Garza, Máximo, Mr. Niebla vs Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero
5) Felino & Místico vs La Sombra & Volador Jr. [relevos suicidas]
6) ? vs ?? [mask]

Being clear on the major match: the first two eliminated will meet in a no time limit mask match. It’s not necessarily one side or another, it’s the first two who go down, so the final match could be any combination of those involved.

Obviously, Felino is the oldest one of the group and seems most likely to lose his mask, but Blue Panther is unmasked in the tercera, so there’s no knowing for sure.

Otherwise, it’s the usual stacked card of names but no feud climaxes. Of major names, Shocker is the most notable missing one.  Ray Mendoza Jr. does make the show honoring his father, but his brothers do not. Rudo sides are fairly well done as far as keeping groups together, not so much on the tecnico side.

Probably more news to come from this later.

Mexico, Hidalgo, Perros

CMLL (TUE) 03/02 Arena Mexico
1) Artillero & Súper Comando b Principe & Trueno
2) Estrella Mágica, Marcela, Star Fire b Amapola, La Comandante, La Seductora
3) Hooligan, Nitro, Skándalo b Astro Boy, Guerrero Maya Jr., Starman
4) Blue Panther, Fuego, Rush b Euforia, Shigeo Okumura, Virus
5) Brazo de Plata, Héctor Garza, Toscano b Naito, Ray Mendoza Jr., Taichi

CMLL’s Twitter says this is Naito’s last match before returning to Japan.

indy (TUE) 03/02 Arena Aficion [Hidalgo Sport]
3) Monsther & Ragde b Gran Alebrije & Mascara Sagrada Jr.
4) Charly Manson, Exotico, Super Crazy DQ Halloween, Oriental, Pesadilla

You’ll be shocked to hear the main event ended with a foul (Halloween on Super Crazy.) On the upside, Charly didn’t drop a title.

There was a strange disclaimer at the end of the CMLL on LATV episode:

disclaimerThe matches included full introductions, as opposed to the shortened one other shows lately – is this how they’re getting around licensing the music? The entrance music “has been utilized as fair use for artistic study and critique”? If that flies, I’d like to apply it to every thing I post here that maybe I shouldn’t strictly be posting here; we actually do a tiny bit of artistic study and critique!

The stories about Blue Demon Jr. creating new NWA Titles and Estrellita joining Perros del Mal got picked up by Notimex and a couple other places, but there’s not much news I didn’t mention yesterday. R de Rudo has the best recap of the entire press confrere, which seems a lot more about the Perros del Mal upcoming shows than the whole NWA thing. If you’d like to hear and see bits from the press confrence instead of reading, Black Terry Jr. has an interview with Perro Aguayo Jr. about the X-Fly/Charly title situation, and Ovaciones talks to Halloween and X-Fly about probably the same thing but I didn’t actually watch. Cool to put a face to the Arturo Rosas name though.

Quick extraneous thoughts:

  • Am I against CMLL dropping from 18 to 15 titles? No, no I’m not. And if I was, there are always more titles lurking around, waiting to be put back in play. It’s more Blue Demon Jr. is wasting his and the Perros time with this; shows based on tournaments for these titles are going to be minimal draws. If there are significant names having singles matches in the tournament, that may mean something, but they don’t need the NWA titles to do those matches (and all booking so far shows they have no interest in doing those matches.)
  • Whenever Blue Demon Jr. loses the heavyweight title, isn’t he just going to more or less award himself with the Light Heavyweight title and just not say the world “light”? This sounds like something he’d do.
  • In a meeting of Los Perros del Mal and the NWA, absolutely no mention of Turbo’s confusing NWA title.

Tuesday, Perros del Mal started a blogspot account. Wednesday, they started tumblr account, in addition to posting news on their facebook. I assume that means they gave up on blogspot in one day, which seems about the level of planning I expect in this group.

Back on the topic of press conferences, CMLL was said to be holding theirs for Dos Leyendas today. Haven’t heard anything about it today, though. I’ll post about it later if info turns up.

AAA says Taiji Ishimori and Takeshi Morishima are coming in for the 03/19 Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera card, with the idea that they may fight La Hermandad. Ishimori is Ricky Marvin’s tag partner, FWIW.

Box Y Lucha has posted a half dozen new articles

  • Mima Shimoda talks about her career as a wrestler, and a promoter
  • An article about Tiger Hispano‘s career includes a photo of him as a young wrestler. They had cameras back then! He feels his best match was Perro Aguayo & Universo 2000, because he got to be a rudo.
  • Dianamico II talks about Arena San Juan Pantitlan, saying it is NOT going to be closed down to be a dance hall. I guess we’ll see if someone actually promotes a show there.
  • Villano III talks about secretly going out as Santa Claus before he was unmasked, and the fans not realizing who he was.

According to Estrellas del Ring recap of the Arena Coliseo Monterrey show, the Psycho Circus are up to 578 wins. They seem to have slowed down! Show looks a lot more well attended than recent TV. RFC has interviews with Mesias and Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.

Paying off a bet on the America/Chivas Classico, Atlantis unmasked for team America.

Laredo Kid’s lucha libre classes cost 200 pesos per month.

There’s a show featuring Blue Demon & Rayo de Jalisco vs Canek & LA Park at Congress Theater in Chicago this weekend. That’s enough to get me out of the state.

Ras de Lona #87 has an interview with the Mendoza family.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

03/06-07 Lucha Times

box. We’re up to 12 shows listed, and that doesn’t include the LuchaMania reruns on MexicoTV. Or whatever else I’m forgetting.

AAA-MEX: Wagner/Electro vs Mesias/Marco, Cibernetico & the Psycho Circus vs the Legion (again), Alex Koslov makes his debut as a women’s wrestler.

52MX: Cancerbero and the Cancerbros vs the Angels, Strong Man and Taichi in the main event.

LATV: It’s a bit early to be certain of a pattern, but 2/3 would be Fuego Aerea vs Tuareg and Mephisto dropping Fantasma on his head. (In retrospect, this explains his partnership with Angelico.)

IWRG-TF: WHO CAN SAY.

CMLL: top 3 include a main event rematch from last week, and two thirds of the Mexican Trios champs vs two thirds of the Triad. It’s only been two months, maybe they’ll all team up again at some point.

AAA-MEX: Cibernetico/Mesias vs Chessman/Zorro, Tiger/Latin/Marco vs Alex/Hermandad

CMLL-FOX: Ultimo Guerrero vs Shocker for the heavyweight title

C3: Naito’s last match in Mexico for a while.

Puebla: Strong Man vs Ultimo Guerrero

ACM: the first appearance of AAA wrestlers here in a while? Also, more Furor.

PdM: Super Crazy promo should mean the main event, and Thunder/Turbo makes sense for this week.

CMLL-TFN: Sombra/Volador vs Negro Casas & Heavy Metal for the tag titles.

Guadalajara, Porky/Intocable, NWA takes back it’s titles, Manson

I’ve received 3 tapatia ballots. You’ve got until Monday.

CMLL (TUE) 03/02 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [Fuego en el Ring]
1) Acertijo b Thunder Boy
2) Ráfaga & Titanio b Astaroth & Nube Roja
3) Astral & Saturno DQ Pequeño Damian 666 & Pierrothito
4) Ángel del Mal & Asesino Negro b Gallo & Neutrón
5) Felino, Máximo, Mr. Niebla b Hijo del Fantasma, La Sombra, Sagrado

Felino pulled Sombra’s mask and pinned him for the win in the main event. Pierrothito got caught unmasking Saturno in the tercera, which sets up a lightweight title match next week. Pierrothito is okay with this, as long as a mask match is next. Astral subbed for Dorada, who hopefully is not in trouble for working those Santo shows. (And why should he? It was clearly Mini Santo, not Mascarita Dorada.)

Tuesday Arena Mexico results have not shown up.

Intocable is accusing Super Porky of threatening to kill him. Intocable says he always saw Super Porky’s wife as a mother figure to him, so he was helping her out with money after Super Porky got let go from AAA. According to Intocable, Porky responded by leaving messages on his phone, threatening to kill him, because Porky thought Intocable was sleeping with his wife. Intocable assures us he was not. I dunno about this entire story. Carreto @ Box Y Lucha pointed out this story first, and a member of the Alvardo family responds in the thread. I’m not sure questioning Intocable’s wrestling skill and heterosexuality is the best defense, but it is the internet.

As of yesterday, the NWA World Welterweight Champion was Mephisto, the NWA Middleweight Championship was Averno, and the NWA Light Heavyweight Championship was Texano Jr. Today, it’s not particularly clear. Blue Demon Jr. (as NWA rep) held a press conference showing off new belts (same look, but they don’t have 40 years of use on them), declaring CMLL is officially prohibited from using their versions of these NWA championships, declaring these championships vacant and explaining they’ve sent letters to the commission to enforce these decisions. Demon then posed with the belts will people who clearly respect title belts, Los Perros del Mal. (Well, X-Fly had his title back anyway.) Of note, they had new light heavyweight and middleweight titles, but not a welterweight one, so maybe Mephisto’s in the clear. Demon says they’ll be holding tournaments for the titles, and CMLL and AAA are invited to send wrestlers.

I expect CMLL to respond by not responding at all. Or maybe they’ll just hold a match to show they can’t be stopped. This is not the first time the NWA and Demon has tried this, and CMLL hasn’t even acknowledged past attempts. The commission is probably going to end up looking bad here, not actually being able to stop CMLL.

The DF Box Y Lucha commission is said to be taking talking to people about Charly Manson dropping the belt. A post on Box Y Lucha says Perros del Mal was claiming the belt was with all along, but Fantasma wants to speak with Charly Manson about it. Charly is refusing comment on the situation, but people defending him claim Charly actually lost the Mexican Universal Championship, a belt that looked remarkably identical to the heavyweight championship. No one’s buying it.

Ovaciones and SuperLuchas posted photos of the Yellow Wave traveling to Teotihuacan, obviously trying to learn all the ancient secrets of Mexico to use against their opponents. Taichi posted more photos over on his blog.

Nicho is unhappy about not being on the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera card. It is underwhelming, but I’m not sure Hermandad matches are helping. Now, a Nicho vs Juvi match…

Lineups

CMLL (SAT) 03/06 Arena Municipal San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco [DJ Spectro]
1) Estrellita & Octagoncito (indy) vs Bracito de Oro & La Diabólica
2) Pegasso, Rey Cometa, Valiente vs Histeria II, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
3) Charly Manson, La Máscara, Místico vs Averno, Maniaco, Psicosis II

Combination CMLL/indy show.

XLAW (SAT) 03/20 Plaza de Toros Tula de Allende, Hidalgo [SuperLuchas]
1) Arsenal & Mensajero de la Muerte vs Black Silver & Sadico
2) Dinastía vs Drastik Boy, Konami, Serval, Black Fire, Sadico [XLAW WELTER]
3) Genesis vs Bunker
4) Leon Rojo & Ovett vs Epidemia & Heavy Boy
5) Grendell & Heimdall vs Fantasma de la Ópera & Mike Segura
6) Damián 666 & Halloween vs ? & Angel o Demonio
7) LA Park vs Sabu [XLAW HEAVY]

Sabu is the ex-ECW wrestler who they’ve been teasing.  No hint on the mystery man, but it really isn’t an XLAW show with no Super Crazy. I bet Sadico isn’t supposed to be working twice. XLAW Welterweight title is vacant.

PdM (FRI) 04/30 Plaza de Toros Calafia, Mexicali [Perros del Mal]
1) El Alebrije, Groon XXX, Oriental vs Hijo del Lizmark, Histeria II, Mr. Águila
2) C. Manson vs X-Fly [hardcore]
3) Blue Demon Jr., El Hijo Del Santo, LA Park vs Damián 666, el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Halloween

Looks like another taping, but can they really be taping back to back days?

top 6 stories of the last two weeks

1) AAA announced it’s Rey de Reyes card. The title match, originally a Mesias vs Latin Lover, is now Mesias vs Latin Lover vs Electroshock vs Mr. Anderson, and only Electroshock getting involved in the match has strongly been built. Konnan/Cibernetico has received the strongest push, and Extreme Tiger/Alex Koslov has been set up on TV, but everything else seems disconnected from the events on TV.

2) CMLL has not announced it’s Dos Leyendas card as of yet, despite having wrestlers talk about mask matches between Mistico and Volador, Felino and Sombra, and all four of the wrestlers in one match. There’s a press conference scheduled soon to make the match clear, but the card is up in the air 15 days out. The only thing CMLL has announced is Ray Mendoza and Salvador Lutteroth will be honored. Meanwhile, despite the events in Arena Mexico, Mistico generally continues to wrestle as a tecnico elsewhere when not matched up with Volador.

3) On the same night as Dos Leyendas, AAA has scheduled a show across town in Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera. The card itself is nothing different than a usual TV taping, including a Cibernetico/Psycho Clown vs Foreign Legion. Partially it’s because some wrestlers will be in Panama instead for a previously scheduled show, but AAA is still treading this DF show as if it’s extra special deal.

4) X-Fly defeated Charly Manson to win the Mexican Heavyweight Championship at the latest Perros del Mal taping. Apparently, Charly Manson kept the belt, because he lost it again to a indy wrestler the following weekend, apparently renting himself out to lose the belt to whomever. Getting back to X-Fly/Charly, they’ve been announced for a hair match for two months from now.

5) Taichi arrived in Mexico. He says he’s going to be here five months, though NJPW said maybe 2 years. Taichi hopes to win a title and a mask while he’s in Mexico. Taichi has silly hair, which he’s clealry going to lose.

6) In IWRG apuesta matches, Trauma I took Pantera’s hair (with some help from Dr. Cerebro) and Hijo del Diablo took the hair of Chico Che.

Other notes

  • Angelico & Hijo del Fantasma won Toryumon’s Yamaha Cup, which included IWRG and CMLL wrestlers
  • Santo & Todos x el Todos ran shows in Belgium.
  • Monito, caught in a tug of war between Shocker & Maximo (not litearlly, yet), walked out on both of them.
  • Juvi may or may not have won a case vs Konnan and may or may not be coming back to AAA. Very clear!
  • Misterioso II is unhappy about Satillo’s Misteroiso Jr. Somewhat more clear!
  • Olimpico went to the press to get back into CMLL; ripped Perros del Mal as being badly runned and doomed
  • Ultimo Guerrero retained the CMLL Heavyweight title over Shocker, may defend against Strong Man next Monday
  • Building CMLL feuds: Mini Warrior/Bracito de Oro, Mini Violencia/Bam Bam. And Maximo may be joining the rudos.

(What did I miss?)

Toryumon, MTY, UG/StrongMan, Manson loses belt he didn’t have

TORYUMON (SAT) 02/27 Sala de Armas [The Gladiatores, DJ Spectro, Black Terry Jr.]
1) Cosmotron b Iron Black
2) La Nazi & Mima Shimoda b Estrella Mágica & Luna Mágica
3) Mini Boricua, Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Nitro b Iguanita, Pequeno Tigre, Yogura
4) Angelico & Hijo del Fantasma b Brazo de Plata & Brazo de Platino [YAMAHA CUP, semifinal]
5) Rey Bucanero & Último Guerrero b Trauma I & Trauma II [YAMAHA CUP, semifinal]
6) Angelico & Hijo del Fantasma b Rey Bucanero & Último Guerrero [YAMAHA CUP, final]

Black Terry has video of these matches up: Fantamsa/Brazos,Trauma/UG/Rey (part 1 & part 2) and the final. Iguanita was hurt in his match.

Obviously, CMLL and IWRG worked on the same card here, occasionally on Coliseo Coacalco shows and they’ve been doing the same lately in Arena Aficion (though not this week.) I’m sure it’s happening on smaller shows too; everywhere but Arena Naucalpan.

AAA (SUN) 02/28 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]
1) Rió Bravo II, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana II b Ángel Dorado, Babe Rap, Sky
2) Hija del Karonte, La Hechicera, Tiffany b Esther Moreno, Mari Apache, Poly Star
3) Último Gladiador b Rey Infernal
4) May Flowers, Pimpinela Escarlata, Yuriko b Caifan Rockero I, Karonte, Rey Sagitario
5) Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown b El Elegido, Hombre Sin Miedo, Máscara Púrpura
6) Electroshock, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Silver King b Black Warrior, El Mesías, La Parka Jr.

I usually don’t post these on the blog portion, because there’s nothing to say beside the results. But this was the first AAA show back here, with Warrior and Dr. Wagner Jr. appearing. Mari Apache filled in for Goddess. Opener was said to be very good.

CMLL (MON) 03/01 Arena Puebla [R de Rudo]
1) Black Tiger, Blue Center, Milenium b Akron, Karisma, Siki Ozama Jr.
2) Dalis la Caribeña, Estrella Mágica, Lady Apache b Princesa Blanca, Seuxis, Yeska
3) Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito b Asturiano, Bam Bam, Mr. Rafaga
4) Blue Panther, Toscano, Volador Jr. b Naito, Shigeo Okumura, Taichi
5) Strong Man DQ Último Guerrero

Strong Man won the first with a press slam. Ultimo took the second with the armbar, then fouled Strong Man and faked his own foul in the third. Referee polled the crowd (who were actually rooting for the rudo) and awarded the match to Strong Man. UG offered a title match.

Volador pinned Taichi to win the semimain.

Mascarita Dorada (on the flight home) and Shockercito (?) were both MIA from the minis match, which changed things around a bit for the locals. Pierrothito was strechered out after an Asturiano dive, and Violenca snuck in a foul on Bam Bam for the win.

Over the weekend, Charly Manson lost the Mexican Heavyweight title to local wrestler Maniaco in Coliseo Molina de Uruapan. As you may remember, Charly Manson lost the heavyweight title to X-Fly last weekend, but it appears he just held onto the physical belt and is selling title changes at local shows. That doesn’t work out well in 2010 – the box y lucha foro is going crazy over this, and Cesar has a takedown as well – though I wonder if this is actually the first time Charly did it, or just the first time the reset of the world heard on it.

It does explain why Charly had no problem losing the belt to X-Fly – he was keeping the belt anyway. Though…the commission just went thru a thing where they were threatening a suspension if the former champion didn’t hand over the belt to the current champion, which appears to have happened here as well. Except that was Mistico & Volador and planned (maybe, somewhat?) and this situation is more a general unplanned embarrassment. It’d be neat if Fantamsa took the belt away, but I doubt it and I expect Charly to go on Dos de Tres to halfheartedly explain it all away.

Ray Mendoza Jr. wants him and/or his brothers to face Brazo de Plata, Blue Panther, or Ultimo Guerrero for their hair or mask at Dos Leyendas. I’m thinking no, but I’ll be completely surprised if there’s not a Villanos trios match on the show.

The Gladiatores have pictures of Super Astro’s new Tijuana sandwich shop, and have interviews with Hijo del Diablo and Tinieblas Jr.

Beside the links above, Black Terry Jr. also has the Black Jaguar vs Latin Brother mask match, and Latin Brother unmasked.
