Pantera/Cerebro, Volador/Mistico, AAA’s movie

IWRG (THU) 02/11 Arena Naucalpan [Estrellas del Ring]
1) Comando Negro b Volaris
2) Brazo Metalico & Héros b Alan Extreme & Avisman
3) Trauma I & Trauma II b Maldito Jr. & Samoth
4) Hijo del Pantera, Pantera, Zatura DRAW Black Terry, Dr. Cerebro, Hijo del Signo
5) Angelico, Super Porky, Ultramán Jr. b Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro

Porky pinned two of the Oficials clean for the win. EdR and Gladiatores differ on the result of the semimain; the guys who broadcast the show say tecnicos won, Estrellas has Cerbero and Pantera in a double pin. That seems to be the next feud, either way. Whatever happened to Cerbero Negro?

Mistico has amazingly turned this all around into being Volador’s fault, accusing him of attempting a coup for leadership of the Super Sky Team. Maybe he expressed those sentiments during that tag match, and Mistico had no choice but kick him low? I mean, I can make that story work a lot easier than Mistico’s back story.

Terrible says the pressure is all on No Limit in Sunday’s tag title match, since Terrible & Texano won the last encounter. Terrible notes this is his first time in Japan, but Texano’s been there five times and they’re like one person, so he’ll be fine.

Because I’m going to forget to say this tommorow: no chance they’re coming home with the belts. Success is having a well received match, but I don’t expect them to do something like winning.

Fuego en el Ring noticed Zumbido was hanging out at Tuesday’s Arena Mexico show, and Zumbido said he hopes to return to CMLL in a couple months (but notes he has no firm return date.) Two months is a long time.

In anticipation of this year’s entrant at Rey de Reyes, AAA looks back at the previous inductees into the AAA Hall of Fame: Antonio Pena, Rey Misterio Jr., Eddie Guerrero, and Tropicasas. No hint as to the 2010 inducette; maybe Abismo Negro? Maybe Octagon?

Maybe La Parka Jr.? He says he’ll retire at the end of 2011. Luchadors say lots of things.

AAA is having a contest for free tickets to their movie for people in Mexico City.

Got me thinking about how the movie is doing. BoxOfficeMojo, which tracks this sort of thing, says the movie grossed $371,439 (US) in it’s first two weeks. That just up to 01/31, so the number right now is surely higher (and they strangely don’t have the first weekend listed individually, but part of the total.) Back before the movie came out, articles said the movie cost $2.35mil US, with hopes of making $6.27 mil. They’re $5.9 short of the goal so far. I would presume this is a movie that’ll fair better than most on DVD (typical kids movie that parents buy in bulk just to keep the kids quiet), but I have no idea how well DVDs sell in Mexico.

Also: AAA mentions Arena San Juan Pantitlan “are evaluating the fate of the arena”, which includes a modern remodeling. And Terra.com is promising a video interview with AAA wrestlers next week, but the Wagner/Electroshock picture can’t be beat.

SoloLucha is sponsoring a Lucha Libre Festival in Monterrey on March 21, in the model of the other expos around the country.

Lucha Va Voom is running shows in LA and San Fransisco this Valentine’s Day weekend. Southern California Public Radio has a story on the promotion, and LA Weekly has a NSFW photo gallery from yesterday’s show. Or maybe last year’s show, I’m not actually sure.

NewsOK has a video of the Real Nacho Libre, which is not actually a Fray Tormenta story, but someone pretending to be the “real” Nacho Libre the movie was based on. HMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Pariso de la Lucha Libre talked with Hijo del Rey Misterio’.

SuperLuchas notes Blue Demon is scheduled for a cage match on California’s PWR show on 02/27. Also, there’s no link, but SuperLuchas website is teasing an XLAW show on 03/10 with LA Park.

Over on Segunda Caida, SLL adds some IWRG and CMLL to his 2010 MOTY List.

LuchaWorld has the newest Slammin’ Stan.

CMLL on Televisa #962 (02/06/2010)

taped 02/05/10 @ Arena Mexico

Off of YouTube, no links.

Blue Panther, Héctor Garza, Shocker vs Averno, Mephisto, Terrible – bog standard match with these two teams, nothing that demanded to be seen. (The usual GdR main event, then.)

Atlantis & Máscara Dorada vs La Máscara & Negro Casas in the national parajes inciedble final match – Good match to end a good tournament. This goes dwon as a success, though it did sort of become a footnote at the end with what else was going on.

Místico vs Volador Jr. – “BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”. Evil Mistico is so so great. This match was lots of fun, though I’m kinda bumed about the 7 minutes of fun that was left on the editing room floor.

I do worry about Mistico doing this exact act three straight years from now, in a Dr. Wagner sense, but that’s a concern for three years from now. In this moment, it’s perfect.

Marcela & Hiroka, IWRG/TV Azteca?, Lineups

Article of the day is the Telegraph’s story: “Love but little money for Mexico’s female fighters“. Marcela, Hiroka and Hija de Karonte are all interviewed, with Hiroka eloquently explaining the difference between  wrestling in Japan and Mexico:

“I also like the atmosphere here, because people are very cold in Japan. They remain quiet. Here they are lively and sometimes drunk”

(Sometimes?) As the article indicates, the focus is on how little the women make from wrestling. Marcela and Hiroka aren’t talking, but the LLF promoter says he pays between 100 and 5000 pesos ($7.64 to $382US). If you’ve see pictures of crowd at those shows, even those numbers seem high. There’s also a video for the article.

This year’s Lucha Libre Expo will be July 24-26. Sorry, Alan.

Volador Jr. tells Ovaciones that he’ll prove tomorrow that he’s not a man of one hold or dive, but a man of infinite resources.

On AAA’s website, Mascarita Divina says he’ll begin walking again this week, and vows to murder Mini Abismo Negro.

Black Warrior is now on a poster for 03/01 Arena Cuatro Caminos de Nuevo Laredo.

Black Terry Jr.’s pictures from IWRG Sunday feature a lot of posed pictures in front of a TV Azteca banner. Congrats on the new TV deal? (Need to ask if we can use these for the wiki.)

DJ Spectro looks back at the debut of Cibernetico.

Lucha y Box Zacatecas writes about local rudo Garra de Tigre, who had a neat look.

Segunda Caida is up to IWRG 01/24. I can’t believe I couldn’t identify a cactus.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update and Alfredo on IWRG 01/24.

CMLL (MON) 02/15 Arena Puebla
1) Black Tiger & Lestat vs Espiritu Maligno & Fuerza Chicana
2) Bam Bam, Pequeño Olímpico, Shockercito vs Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Violencia
3) Fuego, Rush, Stuka Jr. vs Cancerbero, Pólvora, Raciel
4) Blue Panther, Hijo del Fantasma, Valiente vs Ephesto, Misterioso II, Vangelis
5) Brazo de Plata, Místico, Strong Man vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Último Guerrero

Mistico still a tecnico. Maybe they’re going somewhere with Misteriso/Panther? Arena Coliseo Tag team champions actually teaming up.

CMLL (TUE) 02/16 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Relampago vs Acertijo
2) Astaroth & Idolo vs Ángel del Mal & Exterminador
3) Hierro & Neutrón vs Asesino Negro & Mr. Trueno
4) Gallo, Metro, Rouge vs Dragon Rojo Jr., Máscara Mágica, Sangre Azteca
5) Máximo & Mr. Niebla vs Naito & Taichi

Taichi’s debut! And what a match that’ll be. I hope Naito tells him absolutely nothing about his opponents before the match (and then his reactions are recorded.) CMLL actually mentions on their website that Taichi will be arriving at 5pm on Monday at the airport, if you’d like to greet him.

CMLL’s title defense streak

This weekend, CMLL will hold two title matches. Mistico defends the Mexican Light Heavyweight Championship versus Volador Jr. on Friday, and Hijo del Fantasma defends his CMLL World Middleweight Championship on Sunday. Should we expect a title change?

That last title change in CMLL was Valiente defeating Sangre Azteca on August 16, 2009.

(known) Title defenses since

  1. 2009.08.17 Ultimo Guerrero defeated Hector Garza [CMLL HEAVY]
  2. 2009.09.06 Averno defeated Blue Panther [NWA MIDDLE]
  3. 2009.09.16 Hector Garza, La Mascara, Hijo del Fantasma b Averno, Mephisto, Epehsto [CMLL TRIOS]
  4. 2009.09.25 Pierrothito defeated Electrico [MEX LIGHT]
  5. 2009.09.25 Ultimo Guerrero defeated Jushin Liger [CMLL HEAVY]
  6. 2009.10.13 Princesa Blanca defeated Lady Apache [MEX WOMEN]
  7. 2009.10.23 Averno defeated Volador Jr. [NWA MIDDLE]
  8. 2009.10.30 Valiente defeated Dragon Rojo Jr. [MEX WELTER]
  9. 2009.11.02 La Sombra & Volador Jr. defeated Terrible & Texano Jr. [CMLL TAG]
  10. 2009.11.08 Mascara Dorada defeated Dragon Rojo Jr. [CMLL SL]
  11. 2009.11.19 Texano Jr. defeated Toscano [NWA LH]
  12. 2009.11.30 Averno defeated Volador Jr. [NWA MIDDLE]
  13. 2009.12.01 Texano Jr. defeated Toscano [NWA LH]
  14. 2009.12.01 Negro Casas defeated Mascara Dorada [CMLL WELTER]
  15. 2009.12.04 La Sombra & Volador Jr. defeated Mephisto & Epehsto [CMLL TAG]
  16. 2009.12.07 Amapola defeated Marcela [CMLL WOMEN]
  17. 2009.12.13 Mistico defeated Mephisto [MEX LH]
  18. 2009.12.13 Stuka Jr. & Fuego defeated Virus & Polvora [COLISEO TAG]
  19. 2009.12.21 Hijo del Fantasma defeated Sangre Azteca [CMLL MIDDLE]
  20. 2010.01.22 Ultimo Guerrero defeated Hector Garza [CMLL HEAVY]
  21. 2010.01.27 Mephisto defeated Valiente [NWA WELTER]
  22. 2010.02.01 La Sombra & Volador Jr. defeated Felino & Mr. Niebla [CMLL TAG]

22 title defenses is a lot, but that’s just an average of slightly over 1 title defense per the 18 active CMLL titles. Still, I’m thinking this list will be two longer by this time next week.

(I’m not counting the Mexican Trios tournament, since that was a vacant title and not a champion being defeated.)

02/13-15 Lucha Times

box

AAA-US: first taping of ’10. Cibernetico teams with Clowns for the first time, plus the WagnerManiacos versus Crazy/Parka/Laredo, and the Vipers vs La Secta

52MX: Azteca/Fabian/Guerrero vs Tuareg, Pesta Negra vs Fantasma/Sombra/Sagrado

IWRG: (if it airs!) Mascara/Mascara/Veneno vs Angelico/Pantera/Rayman, plus the four way cage match

—–

CMLL: looks like an 1h30m slot right now (but don’t believe until Saturday), which would mean top 3 again. You know the main event.

AAA-MEX: This past Friday’s main event, with WagnerManiacos vs Mesias/Parka/Latin, and Lasser Boy’s debut. Of note, AAA says they’ll always be on from 4-6p (CT) from now on. It’d be nice if it actually worked out that way, and I’m sure they’ve be told that’s been the case, but…

CMLL-FOX: Looks like 11:30am this week. Rush/Stuka/Valiente vs Dragon/Misterioso/Okumura, and Guerreros vs Porky/Garza/Mistico

C3: Terrible/Texano/Vangelis vs Dorada/Sagrado/Shocker, but you should tune in for the Panther/Metro/Feugo vs Raciel/Okumura/Virus semimain.

Puebla: not actually listed on the TVC Deportes schedule as I type this, so not totally sure when/if it’ll air. If there’s only four matches, the Fabian/Rouge/Apocalipsis trio is sure to be cut.

Monterrey: Silver Star/Hator, again?

Perros: last week was 1&4, so maybe this’ll be 2&5? That’d be the minis match and Familia de Tijuana vs Groon/Wagner/Oriental.

CMLL-TFN: Have we given up on this? This week should have the Casas family teaming up against the not-yet-Super Sky Team. This show is so dated, Dos Jr., Lizmark Jr. and Heavy Metal are all involved.
