01/10: IWRG, Neza, Mexico, lineups

IWRG (THU) 01/01 Arena Naucalpan [the gladiatores]
1) Trauma II b Imperio Azteca
2) Oficial AK-47 & Trauma I b Gemelo Fantastico I & Gemelo Fantastico II
3) Oficial 911, Oficial Fierro, Toxico AAA b Chico Che, Trauma II, Zatura
4) Dr. Cerebro L Pirata Morgan Jr., Veneno, Capitán Muerte, Nemesis (IWRG), King Drako [cage, semifinal]
5) Cerebro Negro L Barba Roja, Multifacético, Tetsuya, Pendulo, Jack [cage, semifinal]
6) Dr. Cerebro b Cerebro Negro [cage, hair, final]

Both the Pirates edged out both the Cerebros in the cage matches. The Cerebros did not turn on each other, instead talking before their match about how good friends they were and how much respect for each other, even each guy offering to shave their head to save the other and not do the match (or to do a double hair/double mask match with the Pirates.) The commission made them do the match, and Dr. Cerebro beat his partner. The Gladiatores recap says the crowd was quiet for all of this – they chalk it up to the fans not realizing the situation. IWRG seems to be setting up a Cerebros vs Pirates match. Probably a title match before they’re down, if only the Pirates had a third man in IWRG…

Trauma II, as a rudo, started the show replacing Shuriken in the opener. Oficial AK47 replaced Trauma II in the second match and teamed fine with Trauma I (including fouling the tecnicos for the win), but then Trauma II came back out to fill on for Freelance in the tercera as a tecnico, fighting the Oficials and Toxico (in for AK47). Confusing!

This appeared to annoy the Oficials as well, as they beat up Trauma II after their win. Trauma I ran out for the save, but was neutralized by Oficial AK47, and the referees had to break up both sides. Looks like a feud between the two units, though it’s not clear if the Traumas are meant to be tecnicos.

Perros (THU) 01/01 Arena Neza [the gladiatores]
1) Fuerza Roja & Moto Cross DRAW Dragon Xtream & Rey Neza
2) La Parkita & Mascarita de Oro b Espectrito de Ultratumba I & Espectrito de Ultratumba II
3) Black Thunder, Hermano Muerte II, Hermano Muerte III b Black Spirit, Carta Brava, XXX
4) Damián 666, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido b Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V
5) Cocolores b Chacmol [hair]
6) Dr. Wagner Jr. & Super Crazy DQ Cibernetico & el Hijo del Perro Aguayo

Continuing the apparent Perros-related main events policy of “Everyone Has Fun, No One Gets A Pin”, Perro yanked Wagner’s mask. Full house.

Al Filo del Ring has quotes from Super Raton and Espantapajaros after 1/1 mask match.

CMLL NGW (THU) 01/08 Durango [Canal10]
2) La Máscara & Volador Jr. b Negro Casas & Rambo
3) La Sombra & Místico b Averno & Mephisto

CMLL (FRI) 01/09 Arena Mexico [Alan, Ovaciones, ESTO, superluchas]
1) Molotov & Starman DQ Inquisidor & Pólvora
2) Amapola, Princesa Sujei, Rosa Negra b Lady Apache, Marcela, Princesa Blanca
3) Euforia b Stuka Jr. [lightning]
4) Felino, Shigeo Okumura, Virus b Mascara Dorada, Máscara Púrpura, Valiente
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara b Heavy Metal, Terrible, Texano Jr.
6) La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr. b Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

Volador & Sombra beat the tag champs despite the rudos destroying their gear. They want a tag team title shot, which a pretty good idea (unless you’re Averno & Mephisto) and will get one next week.

Last time a rudo won a lightning match was when Vampiro beat Black Warrior in March of 2005. Though I don’t suppose that counts. So, Sangre Azteca on July 16, 2004. It’s been a while.

Virus snuck in a foul on Purpura. Blanca turned on her teammates in two falls and may finally be a ruda. Lady Apache replaced Lluvia in that match, so she’s still undefeated! Starman got his mask yanked in the open.

Ovaciones also includes a Damian 666 promoting the Perro-involved 01/30 show in SLP. Damian says his appearance on the AAA TJ show does not mean he’s leaving this group. He explains the Perros weren’t on many show lately because they were taking the holidays off.

Arturo Rivera has another column (catching up!) talks about Rellik’s mySpace post, makes vague statements about people going from CMLL to AAA, and evaluating the other announcers.

There’s also stories about Pantera Sureno and Lady Metal teaming up to form Penteras Metalicas and Juvi’s first training seminar (01/31 at the El Cuadrilatero, where he and Fuerza will have a old school/new school debate.)

I missed this yesterday, but Ovaciones posted a note saying CMLL doesn’t know if Dos Caras Jr. is going to WWE. No one knows, but my current estimate is:

45% returns to CMLL
40% goes to WWE
15% goes to AAA or some place else

Fancy way of saying ‘I dunno’.

El Universal interviews the “12” minis cage match. This was from the photoshoot which Tzuki missed, so I think that’s why he’s not counted. Quick sum-up of interesting comments
* Pequeno Ninja: big fan of Dorada so hopes to fight him at the end
* Mini Olimpico & Fantasy: everyone’s on their own, no friends
* Cosmico (listed as 22 years old): wants to stay till the end to win a mask
* Nino de Acero & Shockercito: getting out of the cage ASAP
* Mini Warrior: wants Olimpico or Dorado’s mask

An outdoor show at a fair is not unusual, except if it’s in Colombia.

Abismo Negro is on the cover of Dos de Tres.

Wagnermania posted video of the Copa el Toreo tournament from Arena Lopez Mateos.

6) La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto

Previews: ESTO, Ovaciones

As noted earlier in the week, the top three matches are filled with young tecnico flyers (and Hector Garza, who used to be one.) There’s no minis on this show, which makes this sort of the lesser show of the week; no event as big as the Pequeno Reyes del Aire and the cage match, but the main event is iteration of the eternal rivalry. Rudos are vowing to burn Mistico alive tonight, so that should be fun.

Finally, an answer on Damian’s AAA appearance. A column on the AAA website says, after Rellik no-showed, the Tijuana commission demanded AAA replace him with a star of equal or greater value, so they couldn’t just repeat someone or use a random local guy. Using Damian was the only way not to be fined. Article also mentions Mini Charly Manson had surgery on his nose.

Also on their website: a Chessman wound, talking about how they’re mentioned on wikipedia. AAA really needs to start doing stuff so these guys have something actually worthwhile to talk about.

2009 AAA TV Chart
Projected Air Date (#872)
Mexico: 01/25
US: 02/10

Without a doubt, this is AAA’s best taping of 2009 so far. Joking aside, this show looks like it may be fun.

So, Konnan’s big surprise replacement is…Black Abyss? I am okay with that. Actually, a Gronda rudo turn seems plausible there too, since Rellik was basically just a worse mask and a better worker version of Gronda. But I don’t want to see any rudo Gronda matches.

Both the 3rd and 4th matches scream “finally!”. Since about week two of the D-Mex stuff, the idea has been to do a match like the match they’re doing here, and they’re finally there. Meanwhile, the Psycho Circus do something more than add to a win total people don’t believe or don’t care about – either they finally have a meaningful win or the streak is over. (Plus, this title match was teased back in October, so it’s been a wait.)

The opening matches are welcome returns – an Air Force match that might be really good (though this is a sure candidate for a post match Legion beatdown) and the Apaches/Morenos stuff perhaps going somewhere. At least this confirm that the GdT angle was meant to be a rudo turn and not just randomness. Kinda odd it’s two men/one woman vs two women/one man, but I guess we’ve see the Apache sisters battle evenly with men enough to make it work.

01/08: Rellik, Perros, Box Y Lucha, lineups

The big news: Mima Shimoda cut her hair.

There’s also Rellik ripping AAA’s front office. Really, it’s impossible to pick sides between bookers who are pretty bad and wrestlers who are pretty superfluous anywayr. In the US and elsewhere, a guy in a ‘scary’ mask who doesn’t sell is a novelty. In Mexico, that guy is one in 5000 (including quite a few already under contract to AAA.) But I guess the lesson is here to figure how much you’re actually making before you start working there, not three months into it. And hopefully AAA will have some hilarious overreaction we can all enjoy.

AAA (SUN) 01/04 Plaza de Toros de la Expo Feria de Santa Lucia del Camino [AAA]
1) Killer Clown, Psycho Clown, Zombie Clown b Abismo Negro, Aerostar, El Alebrije
2) El Elegido, La Parka Jr., Súper Fly DQ Chessman, Electro Shock, Zorro

So slow, AAA is posting spot show results on it’s site. Since AAA has started to post lineups, it feels like we’re getting a full idea of where the AAA wrestlers are working. It’s a better idea, but it’s not a full – here, AAA is posting results of a show it never actually listed on it’s site.

CMLL (TUE) 01/06 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [CMLL]
1) Virgo b Posedion
2) Sileuta DDQ Magnifica
3) Rey Trueno b Metal Blanco
4) Infierno b Magnum
5) Leon Blanco & Máscara Mágica DQ El Gallo & Satánico
6) Blue Panther, La Máscara, La Sombra b Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca
7) Rey Bucanero b Máximo [CMLL LH]

In the opening matches, the women ignored the ref until he just stopped the match. Blanco’s team took the 5th match in a sweep; clean win for his team in the first, then Satanico low blow punched him for the second.

Let’s take a moment to note that Ovaciones magically has the same exact number of Bucanero title defenses as the luchawiki does, but never gives a link to the wiki. (To be fair, it may be CMLL giving Ovaciones the number and also not giving credit. That’s actually be funnier.)

Perro Aguayo Jr. says his next show will be in the second half of February, which seems pushed back. Perro says they’ll announce it either today or tomorrow, but also says they haven’t narrowed down the location between Mexico City, Toluca, Queretaro, Puebla and GDL. Which sounds to me like they’re either not really that close or Perro’s not really in the loop for these things. Second half of February would mean in some level of competition with Hijo del Santo’s show, which was the plan earlier.

Arturo Rivera returned to Ovaciones for the first time in few weeks, saying Perrros are concerned about not working enough and he and Dr. Moreales have been doing voice work for the AAA cartoon movie, which is expected October or November.

AAA’s website, with nothing to talk about, mentions Rey de Reyes will be in March, perhaps in Orizaba or Ciudada Madero or Guadalajara and reminds us again how the first taping is on 01/18 in Guanajuanto. KrisZ has the first main event as Mesias, Parka Jr., Silver King vs Chessman, Cuervo, Escoria.

The Mexico City Museum will host a panel discussion about the mask this Sunday.

Box Y Lucha articles from last edition
Epehsto meets the president of Mexico. It was a event sponsored by the national sports commission, and Ephesto, Felino, Ultimo Guerrero and Hijo de Fantasma were there to say “hey, I just met the president.”
– It’s the IWRG Nemesis who claims he’s the real, only, and first. Funny, to me, is this Nemesis talking about always using that name for his 12 years of wrestling and yet also talking about being in AAA for a year (where he was NOT using that name). He believes the AAA one just stole the name.
Volador still thinks he was put in the wrong category for the bodybuilding contest (he’s a beginner)
Freelance is a little more measured in long form about Dorada and Bam Bam (he respects them but thinks he’s better.) Freelance says he tried out for AAA, but didn’t hear back, and would like to make it into CMLL this year. Probably bet not to be making magazine challenges to CMLL wrestlers if he wants to work there. He explains he did get permission from Zumbido to wrestle as Mini Zumbido, but IWRG just wants to keep using him as Freelance since that’s what the people know.
Ultimo Dragon says he’s not considering retiring.

Nitro will actually be out 7-8 months. That’s getting worse every time I read about it. Nitro tore his right knee’s ACL and fractured patella cartilage in his left. A normal person will be back on their feet in two months, but it’s a longer rehab to get in lucha condition.

There’s a show advertised this Sunday at the Tizimin, Yucatan fair as an AAA event. AAA has written a letter to the fair to make it clear they’re not running that show. It appears to be some indy guys using the logo.

4) Mascara Dorada vs Dragon Rojo Jr.
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara vs Atlantis, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero

Main event is not listed as a title match but may turn out to be. Semimain could be pleasantly good or completely self destruct and there may be no in-between.

There was the Dos Caras Jr./Atlantis/Wagner triangle match here back in October. The last triangle hair match (which I assume this is, by the “triangle de muerte” name) here was on 12/18/05 with the local Dagner, Chris Stone, and Okumura.

01/10-11 Lucha Times

So.

I don’t get 52MX, so there’s no way I can actually check if my listings are right. I don’t get the Fox Sports show anymore, and while we occasionally do get comments mentioning what aired (and very much appreciate it, every time), it’s going to be equally tough to check. Knowing one, I could guess at the other. Knowing neither, it’s just a random guess. In the long run, if DVDs turn up at slambamjam.com or somewhere else, I can go back and correct my listings, but it doesn’t really help you when the shows originally air. And it may not matter, because if no one actually can see a channel, listings for it are kinda pointless. It’s only what actually is listed on eventually DVD that matters. Not sure if I should bother giving listings for those channels.

And AAA’s in it’s own tough to predict world for the next month. Starting with this show (and kinda last week’s), we’re in a set of five straight episodes that are half of TV tapings. I can tell you the TV taping and the main event, since it airs on Accion, but I’m guessing blind on the other matches and there doesn’t seem to be a pattern there.

So I’m wonder, how useful are these posts (and chart) at this point? CMLL’s main show (top 3) and C3 (top 4) are pretty academic. All I’m doing now is putting all the information on one page, which feels like a significant drop off from putting all the (mostly) accurate information in one place.

To oddly mix in some positive news: as suspected, Televisa is only airing RAW on Monday nights. This puts AAA back to 3 hours, and I have no idea what they’re going to do with the extra time these next two weeks. Hopefully, this will settle AAA down, both in the “show the openers and stop clipping everything” sense and the “stop freaking out about WWE and thinking lots and lots of talking is the only way to compete”. You gotta hope.

Things I wish I knew existed years ago: this page, on esmas.com (where I’ve been plenty), has seemingly accurate listings for all the channels. Not just all the Televisa channels, all the channels in Mexico they can get listings for, in a much more readable (if harder to navigate) guide.

AAA-US: second part of GdT, which means Jack & Teddy challenge for the tag titles yet again, AAA Batista debuts, and Mesias vs Zorro for the title.

52MX: Minis probably should follow here, as well as Guerreros/Niebla vs Shocker/Toscano/Volador

CMLL: Sombra/Mistico/Volador vs Hijos, Garza/Fantasma/Mascara vs Hijos/Metal, Dorada/Purpura/Valiente vs Felino/Okumura/Virus. A good time to be a high flying tecnico. Or to watch them.

AAA-MEX: First part of the last taping of the year.

FOX: As far as I can tell, this is still airing in Mexico. It’s listed on Fox Sports Latin American’s schedule grid and on esmas’. They could be lagging behind, but they’re not on the US airing.

Women’s match, Terrible/Texano/Virus vs Dorada/Sagrado/Valiente. The lightning matches have been airing here and I have it listed, but I believe both matches went three falls, which wouldn’t leave much time for it.

C3: Minis Reyes de Aire, what more do you need?
