08/07: CMLL major show on 08/29?, Santo to sue CMLL, Abismo talks about returning

CMLL lists the August 29th show as Mask vs Mask, Hair vs Hair. I suspect they’ll announce that as the Panther/Villano III date today, but it could be Dragon Rojo/Mictlan or something completely different. Reforma suggests it could involve Wagner, Niebla or Ultimo Guerrero. Niebla would like a one on one match. Whatever’s going down, CMLL’s been floating the idea of multiple anniversary celebrations – they’ll still have a big one in September, but it won’t be alone.

(Reforma via Jazzo) Perhaps there’s a reason CMLL held the Leyenda de Plata tournament bunched with everything else: El Hijo del Santo will sue CMLL for the rights to that name Santo and his lawyer also says they are filing evidence with the National Institute of Copyright to block Axxel from being billed as the grandson of Santo.

In the email newsletter, Abismo Negro talks about returning to AAA. Abismo first says the All The Vipers vs Abismo in a cage match was unfair to him, so he left for three months. Later, he says he left because of (unspecified) family and health issues and is offended about the stories people made up about him. Abismo says he challenged Niebla to a mask match and Niebla ran off scared to CMLL and says he’ll be back on TV soon.

4) Alebrije, Chris Stone, Pimpinela Escarlata, Sangre Chicana b Antifaz del Norte, Cobarde, Cobarde Jr., Escorpion Negro
5) Killer Clown, Psycho Clown, Zombie Clown b Alan Stone, Cibernetico, Super Porky

I believe that’s Brazo de Plata Jr. working twice. AAA is weird about the Psycho Circus – they have them beat top guys here, but I don’t think they have any plans for them after the streak. I could totally see a Super Porky led team stopping the Psycho Clown streak at Verano de Escandalo and everyone being flipped into other gimmicks.

The ex-trios champs are sad to be ex-champs. Fantasma says he was shocked Negro cheated, because he’s grown up admiring him. But apparently not paying attention to Negro when he was a rudo. Garza respects the new champs ability but can’t believe they’d win the titles in such a manner, and everyone wants a rematch (which will have to wait until after the Spain trip) and a shot at Negro’s hair. Meanwhile, Atlantis vows to be a fighting champion. When’s the last time the NWA Light Heavyweight Title was defended again?

It’d be interesting if a Fantasma/Negro or Mascara/Negro match came out of this, but it looks like a build to Garza/Negro.

Rey Bucanero is hoping he and Ultimo will be back in TNA in September.

SuperLuchas posted photos of Alfonso Dantes’ Toque Tapatio. Sure looks like a Tiger Suplex to me. There’s only pictures of the finish, but the start of the move they showed in the magazine looks very similiar.

LA Park complains about the existence of La Parka Jr. in an interview that barely promotes Friday’s show. Park claims he came up with the name and is the only Mexican to ever hold six world championships at the same time. Did I ever tell you about the time I caught a fish that was this big? It was a whopper.

A Hijo del Santo interview is basically un-noteworthy, except for the part where they list current luchadors and the list goes “Mistico, Satanico, Nitro, Loco Max”. Well, they drop Hijo del Santo’s real name too, claims lucha libre in more popular than soccer and dare to suggest wrestling in Mexico might not have started with the first CMLL show. But, c’mon, Nitro?

Ovaciones has no lucha coverage, and this might be true a lot of places until the Olympics are over.

Chikara’s is teasing lots of outside particpation for their October shows, including IWRG (maybe Skayde, Pantera and Turbo?) and AAA (I hope it’s Guapito!) They’re supposed to announce something on September 7th and htis still a month after that, so just file it away in the back of your mind for now.

As noted, CMLL on Fox Sports is the same in both countries now. As not noted before, Fox Sports has stopped airing reruns of lucha for no particular reason. Not on on-demand either. So, if you’ve got a tape of the FSE show with the title match, I’d love to see it.

AAA-US: Sect vs Hell Brothers & Vampiro, the trio of Head Hunter, Jack Evans and Kenzo Suzuki, Vipers, Pirates, more Morenos vs Apaches

CAN52: Women’s trios, Guerreros vs Garza/Marco/Volador

FSE: this is the pause week between the last minis feud and the apparently next one. Infernales vs Axxel/Felino/Pupura, Guerreros vs Shadow/Mascara/Volador

———

CMLL-MEX: this is where it gets interesting; televisa lists this show as 45 minutes. It’s due to soccer, not the Olympics, and I figure they still find a way to squeeze in two matches.

AAA-MEX: THIS is listed as a 2 hour time slot. I would guess the pointless (and likely bad) women’s tag match is gone and perhaps the minis match, but maybe that and the Psycho Circus match were short enough that they could make it fit. Main event is the new and probably not improved Gronda’s return.

C3: a title match of some relevance, I’ve heard. Tzuki! Unless it’s Tzuki didn’t make it and I don’t know this because I secretly wrote this on Tuesday night.

LyC: no one’s reading this and this one has the Anibal and Solitario Jr.’s, so no one’s watching it either

pointless factoid: this was the 1968 Olympic venue for Fencing.

Expectations will be high for that fourth match. There goes my Ricky Marvin Guapo idea!

No hint on the mystery tecnico, but Silver King should be back from All Japan. Nice to see all of the Sect together for the first time in a while, though they’ll surely be fall guys there.

This is the first second round match in the minis tournament. It’ll be the winner of the previous taping (this Friday) going first in the second round.

Anibal and MY2KJr. teased a title or mask match.

CMLL’s Blog reports on The Big Rumor! No, not Dos Jr., but that V5 vs Panther’s mask match will be announced on Friday.

A typical Blue Demon Jr. bio (he was going to the ’84 olympics, only to tragically injured beforehand) mentions in passing that he’s wrestling at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena on Friday. It’s him and Rey Sr. vs Santo & Park.

The August 11th Wrestling Observer (out today) says Nicho and X-Fly are thinking about leaving AAA. Seeing as Nicho is involved, this shoulde be expected.

Noticias Voz writes about Mini Zombie. His grandfather wrestled as Zombie.

El Tiempo writes about wrestlers in Bogota. Many of them are sons of stars from Columbia’s wrestling boom in the 60s.

Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, and Sangre Azteca visit a children’s hospital today.

CMLL posted a recap of all the action on Sunday. Sunday, July 20th. Fine idea anyway. They’ve also got delayed clips of Atlantis celebrating his 25th Anniversary (CAKE!) and Dos Caras Jr.’s injury in the Gran Alternativa.

08/05 Arena Mexico Results (NEW CHAMPS)

ESTO

CMLL (TUE) 08/05 Arena Mexico [SuperLuchas, ESTO]
1) Astro Boy & Starman b Artillero & Súper Comando
2) Bam Bam, Fantasy, Tzuki b Fire, Pequeño Violencia, Pequeño Warrior
3) Flash, Máscara Púrpura, Metalik b Bronco III, Loco Max, Nitro
4) Dos Caras Jr., Grey Shadow, La Sombra DQ Dragon Rojo Jr., Rey Bucanero, Sangre Azteca
5) Atlantis, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero b Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara [CMLL TRIOS]

Atlantis and UG won the first fall with Atlantidas on the kids. Mascara and Fantasams paid them back with their own finishes to win the second fall. The third fall came down to Negro and Hector, and Negro got a rollup and the ropes for the win.

Atlantis, Negro Casas and Último Guerrero are the 20th Champions. Atlantis is 4 time champ, Ultimo is a 2 time champ, and this is Negro’s first time holding the belt. This is the first time Hector Garza has lost the title in the ring.

It’s kinda neat how these titles slide smoothly from one team where people were complaining about favoritism and internal politics to another team where people will be complaining about favoritism and internal politics.

You certainly make a case this hurts the tecnico trio, which just was starting to get momentum for their unlikely but successful championship run. If Mascara and Fantasma are pulled back into the aimless meanderings of the midcard then this surely has been a waste of time, but it works out fine if there’s some follow up and they can easily do something with that finish. It’s too soon to know.

Mostly, I like the rudos so I’m totally okay with this change. It’s not exactly a team that I’d expect to do anything with these titles (ESTO’s article notes Atlantis & UG weren’t thrilled to get this shot with Negro, and Negro felt likewise), but I didn’t figure the previous team to do anything with them and they were fighting champions for a whole two months.

Obviously, no coincidence they did the title change on cheap general admission ticket night. CMLL really wants to make Tuesday night Arena Mexico shows work and doing things like this makes them seem less like the third most important show of the week.

For what it’s worth, tecnicos took the semimain in two falls. Rey yanked Dos’ mask off for the second fall DQ. BTW, what’s the Flashinda?

08/30 NWA Mexico Card announced

LuchandoLibre passes it on from another source:

NWA MEXICO (SAT) 08/30 Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera
1) Octagoncito vs Piratita Morgan
2) el Hijo Del Anibal vs Coco Rojo
3) Incógnito vs Magno
4) Solar I vs Negro Navarro [SALVADOR AMERICA]
5) Máscara Sagrada vs Veneno
6) Brent Albright vs Adam Pearce [NWA HEAVY]
7) Blue Demon Jr., El Hijo Del Santo, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs El Dandy, El Hijo del Solitario, Fuerza Guerrera

I guess Demon thinks Solitario and Anibal are good now? Sagrada is working as a rudo now and Veneno always is at heart, so that’s an odd match.

Solar and Negro Navarro in a singles match, how novel!

There are two Octagoncitos, so that’s probably not the one who’s currently in AAA. Don’t ask me which Coco Rojo that is.

I would think the show would draw fine in the main event, but not sure how much tickets are going to end up costing and Santo’s not the draw he once was. The NWA Heavyweight Title means nothing in Mexico at the moment (though you could argue that’s still more than the CMLL one means) but maybe that’s a unique enough hook to get the magazines to cover it.
