01/06 news

I think we should work on a list of “People Who Could Adequately Replace Juvi”. The kind of list depends on how you feel about WWE, I guess – is it a list of “People Who Should Leave Mexico” or a list of “People Who Fit Well With Super Crazy and Nicho”? I’m leaning towards the latter, and the more I think about, this is my list of suitable replacement Mexicools:

* LA Park.

That’s it, that’s the list.

It’s Friday, so the Ovaciones focus is on the CMLL show. Again, tonight’s card is typical offseason irrelevance (with one notable exception), but there’s some actual news.

The return to Arena Mexico is being pushed back a week, to 01/27. The official reason is they’re making modifications to the arena, particularly checking over the electric system, and want to make sure everything’s in perfect order. This is a bit of a surprise – it was just Wednesday CMLL posted a note on their website ‘confirming’ the 01/20 date. Ovaciones speculates on Kenzo vs Dos, women returning (early) and Perros vs GdA as possible matches on the return show, but it looks like they’re just spitballing.

Tonight’s card:

CMLL (FRI) 01/06 Arena Coliseo Lineup
1) Danger, Sensei vs Polvora, Vaquero
2) Chamaco Valaguez Jr., Kronos, Valiente vs Dr. X, Loco Max, Nitro
3) Black Warrior vs Felino and Volador Jr. and La Máscara and Satánico and Texano Jr. and Máximo and Virus [cibernetico]
4) Brazo de Plata, Heavy Metal, Mr. Niebla vs Mascara Ano 2000, Pierroth, Hijo del Pierroth
5) Dr. Wagner Jr., Mistico, Negro Casas vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Rey Bucanero

That’s a tecnico only cibernetico and specifically listed that way, which is kinda odd. Robert’s right – if Black Warrior’s going to do a rudo turn, he’ll show it here. Main should be fun.

Today is Dia de los Reyes in Mexico (and other places), and there are special shows for the day. All children with an adult get in free to the Coliseo show tonight as part of the festivities. (I wonder if Atlantis will actually lose on kids event now that he’s evil?)

A day early, El Hijo del Santo signed autographs for children. He told Ovaciones that he plans to be back this year in Arena Mexico.

Marcela and Amapola match up for the CMLL Women’s Championship one more time, next Monday in Puebla.

El Halcon #52 is up! One Year Anniversary!
– so of course, the cover is all the covers!
– and a First Year in Review column by the editor
– Interview with el Hijo del Pierroth. The interviewer asks Hijo del Pierroth why he dresses like Pierroth used to, instead of the current military style, and Hijo reveals he has not yet risen in rank far enough to be a military Pierroth! I had no idea this was so complex. The “Reb” on the mask means he’s the rebellious young Pierroth. He’s also got a COBY logo on his pants, because they’re sponsoring him. He’s very upset that Dr. Morales accuses him of not being a real son of Pierroth – how could one think of such a thing.
– Recap of the year in lucha in Durango.
– Texano Q&A. He lists his debut as 14 years old. (Guadalajara, ’99). It’s also his worst match. He says he was paid 30,000 pesos (~$3,000)/week in Japan.
– Lots and lots of rankings – both December’s rankings, and the Year’s rankings. I need to look this over in more detail when I have a chance. Dr. Wagner is the wrestler of the month.

Wrestlers of the Year (which may just be adding up their monthly rankings):
Lightweight: Loco Max
Welterweight: La Mascara
Middleweight: Mistico
Light Heavyweight: Ultimo Guerrero
Heavyweight: Dr. Wagner Jr.
Mini: Bam Bam
Woman: Amapola

01/05 news

If you haven’t been reading the comments, you need to go check out the new blog of Alexis Salazar, the official CMLL photographs. There’s some great photos. Finally, I’m totally sure what move is La Mistica.

Good time for an obscene, because nothing is going on.
Lineups/Results are after the jumps and in the event section. Of note:
– Hator is your new UWA LH Champion, beat Zorro on the 1st.
– Cyborg lost his hair on 01/01 in IWRG in the captian’s hair match
– Brazo de Oro lost his to Villano III in Arena Queretaro on 01/03
– Mini Olimpico successfully defended the CMLL Mini’s title over Toro Bill in Arena Puebla on Monday.
– Ultimo Guerrero won by DQ over Soberano Jr. to defend the CMLL LH title in Arena Olimpico Laguna de Gomez Palacio, and they’re doing a rematch tonight (a week later), with the title on the line again.

First AAA TV taping of the year will either be on 01/19 in Toluca or 01/22 in Salamanca, Guanajuato. Latin Lover is expected to work a reduced scheduled this year.

India Sioux did an interview on Tuesday, as a preview to the Coliseo show. She said she had three goals for the year:
1) Wrestle in Japan
2) Beat Marcela for the CMLL Women’s Title
3) ???

Seriously, she said three and listed two. It was nifty. I don’t suppose #3 was “get hurt on a Coliseo show”, but that’s what happened in her Tuesday match. There’s some scary pictures of her being stretchered out, but she was okay after being checked in the infirmary.

Box Y Lucha #2747 is up. Inside (though not everything):
Cover is the usual montage of pictures.
Poster is La Mascara as Rookie of the Year.
– Unless I’m crazy, the current trivia question is “Who is the father of Spider Boy and Texano Jr.?” I think I must be crazy.
– Bio of Lobo Rubio.
– Interview with Santo. Yes, he and Negro got pinned by their own trademark moves – but that just shows the strength of their trademark moves! Also, Averno and Mephisto are good young second generation wrestlers. He’s liked what he saw of Mistico in 2005, and thought it was interesting to team with a tecnico Dr. Wagner and Negro Casas again. He was most surprised this past year by how good the young people are.
– Hector Garza says Tarzan Boy is like Latin Lover, in both are green guys from Monterrey who aren’t in his league. He’s got no problem beating the traitor Tarzan for his hair if he wants it (guess they won’t be defending the trios titles), but he’d prefer to fight someone who’s a challenge
– Lola Gonzalez talks about being happy for her recognition, particularly in Juarez, and likes to still wrestle occasionally for a new generation of fans. She also feels she’s been blessed to be injuried, for it allowed her to spend more time with her family.
– Pirata Morgan affirms that he’s the best wrestler in the world. Many have tried to be him, but haven’t come close. He’s thinking about becoming a promoter, and he surely would be the best promoter in the world.
– Maximo reveals the truth: Leobardo Magadan is his very close friend. They go to to dinner, go dancing, go to the movies, that sort of thing. Maximo says they talk six times a day on the telephone, even more so when he’s out on tour. Yet, Maximo finds it very strange that Magadan refuses all his advances at the arena when they have such a life together outside of them. Very strange.
– Pato Soria, while talking about seconding his son, talks about his debut on 02/03/64 – Javier Escobedo passed away and they had to have a replacement – and because he became a professional wrestler, he had to miss out on a chance to represent Mexico in that year’s Olympics.
– Satanico’s debut: DQ in 1st Fall, DQ in 2nd fall. He was paid and immediately run out of the building! That sounds so right.

No new Halcon this week, at least yet. Hey, you get busy sometimes.

Lucha Times

All normal times.

Saturday: After a month of TripleMania and Groon matches, CMLL serves up a truly legendary bad match – witness the CMLL debuts of Elektro and Bronco. First hour should be good, at least.

Sunday: I deleted last week’s Vuelta when I was still not quite aware of what was going on, and can’t recall what I saw on the screen. Assuming it was the show which was supposed to air, GALA should air the AAA taping previous to TripleMania, with an Octagon/Psicosis II main event.

GdR: No guide to work from here, so I’m just guessing at the Mistico main event from Sunday, and a random match from Friday. I probably picked the wrong random match, though.

News should resume tommorow.

Any feedback at all on the new events/cards features?

01/01 projects

I’m still feeling sick, so no news (ovaciones didn’t update, and I didn’t go looking elsewhere), but I wanted to put up links to a two related projects

* If you go to the roster pages and click on the links, or click onto a new list page, you’ll now get a (vaguely) baseball card style profile page. I may add more to it later.

* Those lists of matches come from a master list of events, which you can find here. You’ll notice the listings grow starting in May – that’s as far back as luchaworld’s archives go. KrisZ > me.

This upcoming week would’ve been hectic enough for me without being sick, so updates may be much later than usual or not at all till Sunday. My tentative plan is to preview the Tapatia awards starting next Monday (9th), and open voting on the 16th.
