– the Notimex one hasn’t turned up yet
– Ovaciones has one as well.

There’s not much new about Perro vs Mistico at this point. Marco is looking for a title shot against Universo still.

The hope is we find out a bit more about what’s going on with Mistico. We do know he made it to his tryout, before the WWE show. Mistico worked with Dean Malenko, and got postive reviews. Dave Meltzer, on Figure Four Daily, belived that even if Mistico signed, he wouldn’t start soon, and he wouldn’t appear on WWE TV for longer – they’d have him working off TV for a while, or even in one of their developmental groups. It was Meltzer’s guess that Mistico would go, but that was based on no inside information, just the idea of a 25 year old kid being wowed by a big crowd and better treatment than he’s getting in WWE.

If Perro/Mistico is blown off tonight, then I think he’s going. But since he doesn’t have to go right this second, they could continue out this feud to the 03/23 show even if he was going, so I think it’s much more likely that this reminds unclear for a bit while.

AAA tapes tomorrow.

ESTO also has an interview with Universo 2000. Universo has no plans to retire – he makes it a rule not to plan anything more than two months into the future – because people who retire seem to keep wrestling anyway.

Felino, Blue Panther, and Dos Caras Jr. spoke at a school children about the dangers of drugs. There’s no follow up comment I can make here that will not eventually get me killed, so let’s move on. Ovaciones has a short blurb about Rey and Atlantis talking to people about TB as well.

Quinta Estacion explains why they wanted Mistico in a video – lucha fans don’t normally listen to much Pop music, so they thought if they partnered with the top lucha libre star, they’d get attention from a whole new market. (And I’m sure Mistico and/or his people were thinking the same thing the other way.)

El Martiente’s wrestler of the month is Dark Angel

Mistico and WWE: the neverending story

I remember liking that movie, but it’s long a time since I’ve seen it. Oh, right, news:

This will probably change several times over the next six days because of the gigantic political implications of this decision, but Mistico, against the wishes of CMLL, is scheduled to appear on Tuesday night in San Jose at the WWE tapings. (thanks to Steve “Dr. Lucha” Sims)

Okay, so now I’m not going to write anymore unless I have something new to say about this. Luckily, I do!

I’m thinking he won’t end up in WWE. But, if he was,

I THINK
– CMLL would want Mistico to work out as many dates as possible (they really don’t have equal replacements on the roster)
– CMLL would still want to do a big main event on 03/24, since they’re still competing with WWE (though WWE may have to put a stronger fight to be considered competing)
– CMLL would want to keep the rights to the Mistico and name and gimmick, since they’re already fought for them once

Why not still do the Perro Aguayo Jr. vs Mistico match, except have Mistico lose his mask? He’s gone, CMLL doesn’t care – it’d be a spite move, and one that could cost money (since it’d be worth more if his WWE stint was halfway decent, but promotions have done the same) – and there’s no sense in having Perro lose his hair to a guy on the way out. Either they’d have to come up with another match (Marco/Universo? Volador in Mistico’s spot to beat Perro’s hair – would Perro be okay with that?) or Mistico loses his mask.

This isn’t happening, but it’s weird to figure a halfway reasonable imagine a scenario where Mistico loses his mask. That seemed impossible.

Battle of March 23rd

Ovaciones, having a busy morning, also reports that the current scheduled date for the annual CMLL March Santo/Lutteroth tribute show is March 23rd. That’s the Friday WWE will be in Mexico City, so Mistico vs Perro could go head up with this lineup

WWE (THU) 03/22 Palacido de los Deportes Lineup [superluchas]
?) Bobby Lashley vs Rob Van Dam vs Hardcore Holly [ECW]
?) Batista, Chris Benoit, Kane vs King Booker, Mr. Kennedy, MVP

WWE (FRI) 03/23 Palacido de los Deportes Lineup [superluchas]
?) Bobby Lashley vs Rob Van Dam [ECW]
?) Batista vs Mr. Kennedy [WORLD]

plus the usual Smackdown/ECW names to appear. In addition, Super Luchas had a story about the WWE (or the local promoter) wanting to use CMLL wrestlers on these shows. Shocker and Mistico were two of the names listed, but as long as CMLL controls bookings for him, I will eat my shoe if Mistico works that Friday for WWE.

For whatever the cross over is between the WWE and CMLL audiences, I think Perro/Mistico is stronger than anything here, and that would likely end up on PPV. Here’s the wild card: on this week’s SmackDown, they’ll announce that Rey Mysterio will return on 02/23. That’s about three months ahead of schedule, so something may be up, but if he’s working, he’ll be at these shows and a huge help to WWE.

01/18: IWRG, Box Y Lucha

CMLL

IWRG (SUN) 01/14 Arena Naucalpan Results
1) Trauma I, Trauma II b Golem, Puma King
2) Bacteria, Freelance, Turbo b Avisman, Black Terry, Black Thunder
3) Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Suicida DQ El Hijo del Diablo, Fantasma de la Ópera, Veneno
4) Camorra, Canek, Mascara Ano 2000 b Dos Caras, Negro Navarro, Sagrado
5) Electroshock b Mascara Sagrada [1, IWRG IC HEAVY]

Electro gets his title shot versus Canek on 02/04; I’m shocked they’ve announced the date. Trios champs lost the tercera when Fantasma piledrove Suicida, which will do it to you every time.

Ovaciones’ preview of IWRG’s Sunday card says the Corp/tecnicos atomicos has been changed to a trios match for the belts.

AAA’s redesigned their site. It’s still not great, but it’s better than a few hours ago when they had some completely unreadable buttons up. They didn’t actually add much of new content.

Box Y Lucha has posted more articles from it’s latest edition
Cibernetico says the people like them because he’s real, and he’s says what they want to say, to anyone. Ciber echos the “Latin Lover’s forgotten his people” and drops Kawaghi’s name.
The Villanos share their memories of Villano I. Villano III’s stories all are about winning street fights against thugs with superior numbers.
India Sioux talks about her start in lucha libre. She’s going be in Japan from 01/23 to 01/30 (or 02/01 by the time she’s back). CMLL.com says Marcela and Hiroka are going as well.
Pirata Morgan reminds us that the eye patch is not a work, he really has one eye. But he also explains he’s strengthened that one eye so much, he has perfect peripheral vision. That’s why he’s the best in the world.
– Pirata Morgan has a hot daughter, which just boggles my mind. Perla Negra is training (apparently while not wearing much if you believe these pictures), but not yet wrestling.
Perro Aguayo Jr. tells everyone who think the Perros are cooling off to shut up. Okay. (Guess they’re cooling off.)
Rambo talks about the saddest day in his life; the day his father died.
Arena Queretaro celebrates 24 years of lucha libre.

Villano III chats with Box Y Lucha on 01/23 at 2:00pm.

In today’s Ovaciones, Coco Rojo and Super Muneco hype up this weekend’s VIP show by talking about having a mask match…sometime later. For now, it’ just a singles match.

WWE pushed it’s Mexico tour back a week.

03/22 (THU) Mexico City
03/23 (FRI) Mexico City
03/24 (SAT) Chihuahua (not Tijuana)
03/25 (SUN) Monterrey

…so CMLL is totally running the week before. I wonder what they’ll do in a Arena Coliseo Monterrey that week.

Tickets range between $23 up to $183 US. I think Chris Benoit is the biggest lucha libre name value draw included in the list of people on this tour (subject to change); Chavo’s there too, but he hasn’t had much of a Mexican career. They’re going after a different fanbase, so maybe that’ll be fine, but it didn’t seem like things were strong enough last time to do two shows in the same city. Rey Mysterio is not listed as participating at this time.

Sunday is Brazo de Plata’s 30 year anniversary of starting his lucha libre career.

Recent CMLL major match matches

00/03/17 Atlantis vs Villano III [mask]
01/03/30 Perro Sr. vs Universo 2000 [hair]
02/03/22 Torneo Cibernetico, GdI vs LF [CMLL TRIOS]
03/03/21 Pierroth b Gran Markus Jr. [hair]
04/03/19 Perro Jr. & Terrible b Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 [hair]
05/03/18 Perro Jr. & Perro Sr. b Cien Caras & Máscara Año 2000 [hair]
06/03/17 Perro Jr. vs Universo 2000 [hair]

So the 16th a tiny bit earlier than they usually run these shows, but surely close enough that they might

I think WWE’s going to suffer. They’ve got higher prices, and they’d already lost some of the novelty last time thru. WWE seems to be running house shows lineups with nothing mattering, while CMLL will have a big match (likely involving Perro Aguayo Jr!)
