Dos wins (Ovaciones says third fall with a press slam into a German suplex, ESTO says powerbomb), so he should get a heavyweight title shot. Except, there’s none listed. The idea seems to be that they need to wait until after UG defends the title tonight in Puebla against Hector Garza and see who the champion is after that before deciding anything.

ESTO is critical of Dos’ perfomance, saying he was too busy waving for reaction than fighting. There defintely was a part of the crowd behind UG.

Sombra hurt his rightshoulder on a dive in the semifinal and left the match. The rudos actually won three straight falls, just getting DQed for excessive violence in the second.

Rudos were DQed in the second for taking La Mascara’s mask. Vangelis replaced Heavy Metal.

AAA has put up half it’s TV recap, but is missing everything past X-Pac/Zorro. Looks like Chessman is still alive, running in the main event to attack Charly and perhaps allying with the Legion. I’ll do the full post when the full results come out.

AAA also advertises the big cover story for Dos de Tres – Charly Manson getting 30,000 pieces of fan mail while he was out. Still can’t buy the magazine on the website.

Abismo Negro told Notimex that AAA and WWE are the best two promotions in the world, and all they need to do now is unify their championships. This post was an hour late because I just started daydreaming about the possibilities of Edge as AAA World Mega Champion. Abismo’s actual purpose for this interview was to talk about a spot show he’s promoting in Ixtapaluca on 03/08.

6) Atlantis, Heavy Metal, Negro Casas b La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr.

Mr. Niebla did end up missing the main event after Thursday’s car accident. Hope he’s doing well. Heavy Metal replaced him, and the rudos won and challenged for the tag team titles as you’d expect, except I’m not so sure which two it’s supposed to be now (since it clearly was Negro/Niebla last week.)

Villano’s team took the semimain in straight falls. They won the first and were going after UG’s mask in the second when Blue Panther ran in thru the crowd and fouled V5. Brawl continued from there. When it was settled down, both sides seemed to agree on a V3/V5 vs Panther/UG double hair/mask match for 03/20. Yes, they appear to be setting a main event for a big show *7* weeks in advance. Must’ve been an awesome planning session over the holidays.

5) Medussa L Princesa Blanca, Lady Apache, Amapola, Mima Shimoda, Sahori, Dark Angel, Goddess, Hiroka, Marcela, La Nazi [cage, hair]

Order of escape was Goddess, Mima, Sahoria, La Nazi, Marcela, Hiroka, Dark Angel. This left Lady Apache versus Amapola, Princesa Blanca, and Medussa. Rudas beat Apache for a while. Amapola left, leaving the other two to bumble there way into letting Lady Apache escape. Blanca blocked a Medussa casita and got one of her own for the win. Blanca wins a hair and a title in 8 days.

Warrior got the pin on Shocker in the third fall of the semimain thru a foul.

No results from the Perros show yet, but posts & photos on the box y lucha board say Super Crazy turned on the tecnicos and joined the Perros.

01/18: GDL (new Trios champs), IWRG, Coliseo

CMLL (SUN) 01/18 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [MT: main (w/picture of new champs), semifinal]
4) Angel de Oro & Volador Jr. b Rey Bucanero & Satánico
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo de Fantasma, La Máscara b Atlantis, Rey Bucanero Negro Casas, Último Guerrero [CMLL TRIOS]

Hector Garza, Hijo de Fantamsa and La Mascara are the 20th CMLL Champions, winning back the belts they lost in August. Hector is now a five time champ, but this is the first time he’s won it back with the same team. Rudos go from controlling 6 of 8 of the major CMLL championships to half and half in the course of two days. Didn’t see this one coming at all. Negro teaming with UG and Atlantis was a forced situation and didn’t really help anything, just got Negro more into the mix when it came to the TNA stuff. I don’t mind this change, especially if we’re eventually heading to a Hijos del Averno or Poder Mexica contesting these belts.

Champs took the first fall with double Atlantidas. Tecnicos won the second fall, and then the match clean in the third fall, La Mascara getting Atlantis with la campana. Yea, read that again, it’s hard to believe. Champions did not argue, but just walked out after the loss.

Volador and Angel de Oro got a bit of an upset win themselves in the semifinal. After the match, Volador challenged Satanico to a mask vs hair match. This offended Bucanero – how dare Volador challenge his old mentor! – and Rey is giving Volador a shot at the CMLL Light Heavyweight title instead. I would not bet against any challenger right now.

5) Místico DQ Black Warrior

Warrior fouled Mistico and then pulled his mask. Gotta cover all the bases.

El Siglo de Torreon talks to Ultimo Guerrero about the beginnings of his career. His father brought him to lucha libre shows from the time he was very little – he says he’s been told he first started talking and walking when at them – and Mano Negra inspired him to become a wrestler. He wrestled locally for five years as Flanagan before going to Mexico City on his own dime and not much more than that. He was a complete unknown and slept on the floor of the Fuerza/Panther Gym at nights and worked for Fuerza Guerrera during the days.

The same newspaper also talks to the Torreon box y lucha comission, who wants to create offical belts. There’d be heavyweight (98 kg and up), light heavy (80-97), middle (71-79), welter (65-69), light (60-64) and feather (59 and down), as well as tag team and trios. Nothing good can come of this! The commission’s ideas is that they’re hold tournaments involving qualtity (and licensed!) wrestlers and hold a hard line about how the titles are defended so the titles retain more credibility than the random belts that float thru here. The ideas is the titles would start here in May. The article also notes less than 10 of the estimated 160 local wrestlers have bothered to renew their licenses.

Rotavio de Queretaro has an interview with Arkangel de la Muerte, who explains the origin of his name. His career as Mr. Cid was not going anywhere and he was thinking off retiring, but suffered an accident that put him in a coma for a week. While in the coma, he saw an angel, and decided that was a gimmick work trying. Arkangel feels he’s getting close to the end of the career – the young people are pushing him – but he’s still like to go back to Japan again, as well as go up to Canada to teach (which was planned at one point apparently. The Dragon Gym affiliate that’s no longer in existence?)

WagnerMania posted video of the tag team title match from Friday and the latest WagnerMania show.

CMLL (SUN) 01/25 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara

3) Dark Angel, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Medussa, Princesa Blanca
4) Mascara Dorada, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Mephisto, Rey Bucanero

Obviously going to be changed to a Bucanero/Volador main event. A women’s trios is rare here, especially with no local woman involved. Wonder if they’re getting a title match next week – that’s be three in three weeks, but also give them something noteworthy for the monthly free show (assuming it’s on 02/01.)

IWRG (SUN) 01/25 Arena Naucalpan

Ultimo Guerrero is your new CMLL World Heavyweight Champion

CMLL (MON) 12/22 Arena Puebla [morgan_alebrije]
1) Blue Center, Lestat, SWAT b Aguila Guerrera, Karisma, Mr. Rafaga
2) Black Tiger, Tigre Rojo, Tony Rivera b Espiritu Maligno, Loco Max, Siki Ozama Jr.
3) Mictlán, Sagrado, Valiente b Sangre Azteca, Shigeo Okumura, Virus
4) Black Warrior, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero b La Máscara, Mascara Dorada, Volador Jr.
5) Último Guerrero b Dos Caras Jr. [CMLL HEAVY]

Ultimo Guerrero is the 15th CMLL World Heavyweight Champion. Dos won the first fall with the cross armbreaker, UG pinned Dos after he missed a top rope move in the second fall. Dos had UG in a submission in the final fall, but the referee got bumped and then distracted by Rey Bucanero (Ultimo’s second.) Ultimo Guerrero fouled Dos, covered, and got the three count.

Ultimo Guerrero is a double champion, also holding a share of the CMLL Trios titles. The Guerreros hold the two top weight class belts with Bucanero still being Light Heavyweight champion. In fact, of the eight CMLL World Titles, now only two are held by tecnicos (Mistico with the Welter and Bam Bam with the Mini.)

Dos Caras Jr. held the title for 503 days, which is the shortest title reign this decade. (There’s only been 4.) Of far more interest is what’s next for Dos Caras Jr. Dos is booked on the Tuesday, Friday and Sunday shows this week, so there’ll be plenty of time for people to ask question and I’m sure they will.

I could not have been more wrong about this; I’m so stunned, I’ve yet to mark out over UG winning the belt. Does this mean we’re getting Ultimo Guerrero/Marco Corleone matches? There’s not an obvious alternate for the title.

12/22 (1): Puebla, Monterrey, Coliseo, IWRG, bye bye Ciber

I’m splitting this right down the middle for sanity sake. (And so I can take a 15 minute break before typing up lineups.)

CMLL (MON) 12/15 Arena Puebla [eric0891 @ el martinete]
1) Centella de Oro & Legionario b Karisma & Sauron
2) Asturiano, Hijo del Faraon, Pegasso Xtreme b Policeman, Semental, Toro Bill Jr.

4) Blue Panther, Mictlán, Valiente b Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca
5) Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero b Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone, Shocker

and that’s how we get to today’s title match, of course.

CMLL (THU) 12/18 Arena Monterrey [RFC]
1) Angel Dorado Jr., Mascara Dorada, Máscara Púrpura b Arkangel de la Muerte, Dragon Rojo Jr., Virus
2) Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero, Terrible b La Mascara, Mark Corleone, Maximo
3) Diluvio Negro II L Blue Panther and Tiger Universitario [hair]
4) La Sombra, Mr. Niebla, Valiente b Difunto II, Diluvio Negro I, Último Guerrero [semifinal]
5) Averno, Misterioso II, Volador Jr. b Místico, Rey Hechicero, Sangre Azteca [semifinal]
6) Último Guerrero b Difunto II [mask]

Let me see if I get this all right (thanks KrisZ)

Main event 12 man mask match took the form of a battle royale to determine four trios teams, with the person who took the pin moving on to a mask match. (No captains, I guess.) That was UG in the first match and Rey Hechicero in the second. However, Rey Hechicero suffered a knee injury (attributed to Misterioso.) I believe what happened is they had a quickie battle royale with the four guys left, with Difunto getting beat by Mistico and dumped into the mask match. Which he lost. No name listed.

Blue Panther took Diluvio Negro II’s hair.

La Mascara and local Angel Dorado Jr. ended up taking Hector Garza and Dos Caras Jr.’s spots. As I’ll get to later, Hector probably had had knee surgery, causing the recent disappearing act. Would it hurt CMLL to actually announce this sort of thing?

CMLL (SUN) 12/21 Arena Coliseo [Ovaciones]
1) Hijo del Faraon & Pegasso b Camorra & Semental
2) Fabián el Gitano, Leono, Tony Rivera b Arkangel de la Muerte, Dr. X, Loco Max
3) Mascarita Dorada, Nino de Acero, Shockercito b Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Warrior, Pierrothito
4) Mascara Dorada, Máximo, Sagrado DQ Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca, Skandalo
5) Mephisto, Terrible, Texano Jr. b Marco Corleone, Shocker, Toscano

By everyone’s estimation, Dorada, Pierrothito and the minis stole the show. Focus was on Dorada vs Pierrothito, with Dorada picking up the pin (though it may be disputed.) Dorada wants a shot at the Lightweight Title, Pierrothito wants a mask match (ha! you know, I think they could main event with that…) but they’re getting a trios rematch next week. Considering how long it took for Nosferatu and Infernal to get their rematch, we’ll get a title rematch for this one in March.

Terrible replaced Ephesto, which worked because they seem to be doing a program with him and Marco off Leyenda de Azul. here, Terrible got the pin after grabbing the ropes.

DQ in the semimain was for Dragon Rojo fouling Maximo. Which isn’t very tecnico. Skandalo replaced Black Warrior. Pegasso may be lower than Super Fly is in AAA, but he’s winning.

IWRG (SUN) 12/21 Arena Naucalpan [Ovaciones]
4) Hijo del Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. DQ Head Hunter I & Veneno
5) Arlequin L Oficial 911, Scorpio Jr., Fuerza Guerrera, Tetsuya, Cerebro Negro, Pierroth II, Zumbido, Máscara Año 2000, Multifacético [cage, hair]

Arlequin lost his mask and his hair within 2 months. Indy lucha libre, ain’t it special. 911 gets credit for the win. DQ in the semimain was referee violence, I believe.

CMLL (SUN) 12/21 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [mt 1, MT 2]
4) Mr. Trueno, Rey Trueno, Satánico b Casanova, Gallo, Neutrón
5) Dos Caras Jr., La Máscara, Volador Jr. b Averno, Felino, Negro Casas
6) Místico b Mr. Niebla

Not totally sure of the result of the fourth match. Post match, Gallo again challenged Satanico to a mask vs hair match, and Satanico warned him to be careful what he asked for. That (non-mask/hair) singles match is scheduled for tomorrow and Gallo is so getting pwned. Clean wins in the top two matches.

In other news from the building, they’ll now be following the Mexico City Tuesday/Sunday pattern of really cheap tickets the first Sunday of every month, starting on 01/04. Children tickets are 10 pesos anywhere, adults are 30 pesos in some of the seating. June will be the 50th anniversary celebration for this arena, so maybe another big show will take place then.

AAA (SUN) 12/21 Salon Sagitario [AAA]
1) Fabi Apache & Mari Apache b Cinthia Moreno & Sexy Star
2) Alan Stone & El Elegido b Escoria & Mesias
3) Cibernetico & La Parka Jr. b Konnan & Zorro

AAA’s site bills this as Cibernetico’s farewell. He’s not on the lineups for this week (so far!) AAA never writes about spot shows, make of it what you will.

They said the show had a good turnout, and it looks that way from pictures elsewhere. Mesias and Sexy Star didn’t get along with their partners.

12/13: Mexico results, CMLL plans change, GDL Festival

CMLL (FRI) 12/12 Arena Mexico [superluchas, ESTO, Ovaciones, SoloLucha]
1) Inquisidor & Pólvora b Sombra de Plata & Starman
2) Dark Angel, Lady Apache, Lluvia b Hiroka, Mima Shimoda, Princesa Sujei
3) Terrible b Marco Corleone, Texano Jr., Dos Caras Jr., Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Shocker, Blue Panther, Rey Bucanero, Toscano, Villano V, Sagrado, Misterioso II, Valiente, Ephesto, Máximo [LdA]
4) Místico DQ Último Guerrero

Main event was a near 20 minute match. UG took the first, Mistico took the second, and the third ended by DQ when Mistico dived towards Ultimo, but Ultimo grabbed Tony The Cartoonist’s canvas and smached with Mistico with it on the way down. SuperLucha has the first fall over in about 3 minutes, which ESTO lists as “less than five minutes.”

People voted for 11 different people to win the Leyenda de Azul. Terrible got no voes and won. Order of elimination is listed above, with Villano V replacing Lizmark. Story of the match was the three Hijos de Averno working together. When it was down to Dos/Marco and Terrible/Texano, the two rudos took out Dos together. Texano got pinned next, but he and Ephesto stayed around ringside to distract Corleone into being fouled by Terrible. SuperLuchas has the match at 36 minutes, I think.

SoloLuchas says attendance was up, but it doesn’t look good from the shot of Mistico and Ultimo Guerrero. They both could be right.

Ovaciones reportes CMLL has changed their minds and will continue to run Arena Mexico Tuesday and Friday for the rest of the year. CMLL is thinking of running big shows on 12/23 and 12/30 (Fridays) and may announce them well in advance, plus Tuesday January 6 will be another fan appreciation day.

I thought IWRG was supposed to be done this week as well, but there’s a mention of them running a 10 man cage match next Sunday with Scorpio Jr., Fuerza Guerrera, Arlequin, Pierroth II, Multifacetico, Zumbido, Cerbero Negro, Tetsuy and Mascara Ano 2000.

Lots of articles on the first day of the Guadalajara Lucha Libre expo
– Local papers Informador, milenio and La Jornada covered the show, as well as a local reporter for MT who filed three different articles: the AAA undercard, on the main event, and on those being honored and what’s to come the next two days.

Milenio says 3000 people showed up for the wrestling portion of the show. It sounds like attendance was not as expected; the show was delayed 30-40 minutes as they waited for “enough” people to move to the bleachers to start the show, and the Milenio article mentioned ticket giveaways. The MT report has a good photo of the setup. Having this outdoors in December did not help, with a lot pointing out how cold it was while watching the events.

AAA (FRI) 12/12 Guadalajara Lucha Libre Festival
5) La Parka Jr., Mesias, Octagón b Jack Evans, Konnan, Teddy Hart

Main event was supposed to be Parka/Octagon vs Mesias/Konnan, but Mesias and Konnan refused to get along based off current storylines and they turned it into a trios. The other matches sound like they happened as scheduled, just no results reported.

The MT article says the idea was great but the execution was horrible. A complete lack of security put the wrestlers in danger. The semimain guys were pelted with drinks for the bleachers. (There were announcements to stop it, but no one actually forcing them too.) After the main event, the crowd jumped the barricade to get close to the tecnicos, who had to fight thru the crowd to get to the back. AAA wrestlers were angry enough to blow off the press after the show.

WagnerMania has video and pictures of the booths and other parts of the show not relating to the AAA show.

SuperLuchas has the first round results of the Latin American tournament in Peru.

News American has an article on San Jose lucha promotion >Pro Wrestling Revolution and includes this line:

According to American wrestler “Strongman” Jon Andersen, Pro Wrestling Revolution is the most successful wrestling promoter in the United States.

CMLL (TUE) 12/16 Arena Mexico
1) Angel de Oro & Tigre Blanco vs Camorra & Inquisidor
2) Pegasso, Rey Cometa, Stuka Jr. vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Nitro, Skandalo
3) Hijo del Fantasma, Mascara Dorada, Valiente vs Ohara, Shigeo Okumura, Virus
4) Sangre Azteca vs Dragon Rojo Jr. [MEX WELTER]
5) Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Shocker vs Black Warrior, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas

2009 came early! I suspect this is the beginning of a long series between the ex-Air Force and the Tuareg. Between Cometa and Pegasso making the card and Ohara being back on a proper CMLL show for the first time in a long while (the Leyenda de Plata tournament), I think people are already headed off for vacation.

CMLL (FRI) 12/19 Arena Mexico
1) Ángel Azteca Jr. & Angel de Oro vs Calígula & Méssala
2) India Sioux, Marcela, Princesa Blanca vs Amapola, Hiroka, Medussa
3) Flash vs Pólvora [lightning]
4) Mascara Dorada, Máximo, Valiente vs Felino, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
5) La Máscara, Toscano, Volador Jr. vs Ephesto, Terrible, Texano Jr.
6) Dos Caras Jr., Mark Corleone, Shocker vs Black Warrior, Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero

That’s a random but fun sounding lightning match. They haven’t done one of those for a while – last one I see is June 30, 2006 between Mascara Purpura & Stuka. A Lightning match is just a 10 minute time limit one fall match, usually between young guys.

Nice that they’re bundling Los Hijo del Averno as a rudo trio, but shouldn’t the guy who won Leyenda de Azul get the main event?

The opener is an ongoing feud. Maybe “ongoing” is too strong, “continuing” without making progress works better.

Mistico is in Tijuana on this night.

While you’re waiting for this week’s shows, here’s last week’s Ras de Lona:
