What’s Today’s CMLL Main Event?

It’s probably Shocker vs Ultimo. That’s what CMLL has, that’s what’s listed over on ESTO. Ovaciones seems to be on a different page.

I can’t fit in the headline here, but it’s “Dos Caras, going for the championship” too. To be fair, it does take a chart to figure out who Ultimo Guerrero is supposed to feuding with (and if he’s meant to be doing it as a tecnico or a rudo) at any moment, but it’ s not like the answer is hard to find – this is what’s in the bottom left hand corner of the same page

Today’s article – and yesterday’s, with various subs that weren’t – do not carry a byline. I wonder if someone’s filling in for Arturo Rosas Plata and isn’t quite up to speed. Something off, for sure.

03/20 CMLL Arena Mexico Lineup (Dos Leyendas)

CMLL (FRI) 03/20 Arena Mexico [ESTO]
1) Pequeño Olímpico, Shockercito, Ultimo Dragoncito vs Pequeno Violencia, Pequeno Warrior, Pierrothito
2) Blue Panther, Sagrado, Toscano vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
3) Hector Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Mascara vs Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca
4) Dos Caras Jr., Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero
5) Negro Casas vs Mistico [CMLL WELTER]
6) Villano V vs Ultimo Guerrero [mask]

What did I say?

By the way, there’s very little chance SuperLucha’s expected Dos Leyendas card (including these trios titles against the other trios titles in unification match) coming thru. Even the welterweight title match tease is unlikely, or more likely another day – that’s the usual method of CMLL chain yanking.

Yea, I don’t know what I’m talking about. Point for SuperLuchas.

On the actual card:

– I’m not really sure they did it wrong, but – CMLL’s spent the period before the mask match and the period since the mask match pushing Blue Panther much harder than Villano V. Yet, six months down the line, Panther’s in a random segunda and V5 is headlining the show.

– If CMLL believed Ultimo Guerrero vs Villano V would sell out, they wouldn’t have Negro Casas & Mistico on the same show. Probably no coincidence that feud showed up just as they went away from the tag main event.

– Even if it’s a not a title match – and it’s not listed as such, perhaps because at least one of those teams will have a title defense before then – why put a meaningless trios match ahead of it on the card? Matches 2 and 4 are just about getting guys a slice of the payday. So is the champion vs champion match, unless they plan on following it up, but they could at least protect it as meaningful a little better.

– Happy for the minis to make it on here. That should be good, and a few other matches could be, if that’s what they’re looking for. I don’t know that they put together a card of excellent matches but for the general fans who just want to see the stars, they look to be giving enough. Tickets don’t go on sale until tomorrow, and hopefully they go fast enough that CMLL feels safe putitng his on PPV.

Ultimo Guerrero vs Villano V to face in a mask vs mask match on March 20th

8:30pm: Update at the end of the poast

That’s your Dos Leyendas main event. I’m not sure if that was the plan all along, or if Villano III cost himself (and Blue Panther) this pay day by opting to do the hair match with Scorpio Jr. this weekend in Arena Neza, but CMLL announced a straight singles one on one match for the masks. Tickets go on sale next week.

The talk, when V5 beat Blue Panther, is that V5 would ultimately lose his mask in turn to build up a young wrestler. If you believe that talk, Ultimo Guerrero does not exactly fit the bill as a young wrestler. (On the other hand, one could say V5’s importance has been so diminished, it’s not the boost beating Panther would’ve been for anyone else.)

If Ultimo beats Villano 5, then I think we can definitely say we would’ve preferred this sequence of events to be Ultimo taking Blue Panther’s mask and anyone taking Villano 5’s. But, we need to keep on saying if, because CMLL’s shown they’ll do silly things just to do the surprise.

Other notes from the press conference
– Dragon Rojo Jr. has a new mask. No picture yet, but I’m sure we’ll see it soon.

– Hector Garza is starting a tecnico midcard group again. This time, it’s Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata, Angel Azteca Jr. and Metro. Hmm, who doesn’t belong? Maybe we can call him Angel de Diario.

No one remembers this, but the Angels were actually in Hector’s group last year – they were introduced as Angel I & Angel II at the time. Anyway, no idea if this is supposed to be a separate undercard act or if they’ve forgotten Hijo del Fantasma and La Mascara.

Since Mistico doesn’t like Garza, maybe now he can be free to complain that giving guys “Angel de Plata” and “Angel de Oro” gimmicks is totally ripping off and marganilizing his identity. They really seem like Martha Villalobos knock off Mistico characters than CMLL ones.

Update (1): Box Y Lucha’s take on the press conference does clarify that Hijo del Fantasma and La Mascara are supposed to be part of Hector’s group.

In big news somehow lost in the shuffle, Misterioso II was announced as a new member of Hijos del Averno.  We’re down to just Virus, Vangelis, Okumura and Lizmark Jr. as unaligned notable rudos in CMLL.

02/25 (results): AAA, IWRG, GDL, CMLL

Post is too big this morning. So it’ll be two.

AAA (FRI) 02/20 Arena San Juan Pantitlan [The Gladiatores]
1) La Chona, Miserable, Ricky Ricon b Escorpion Dorado Jr., Mohicano I, Rey del Espacio [Copa Gema, semifinal]
2) Baby Amor, Caricia, Caricia Jr. b Bestia Metalica, Infinito, Mohicano II [Copa Gema, semifinal]
3) La Chona, Miserable, Ricky Ricon b Baby Amor, Caricia, Caricia Jr. [Copa Gema, final]
4) Brian el Striper & Mari Apache b Cinthia Moreno & Dizzy
5) Argenis, Gato Eveready, Laredo Kid b Rio Bravo, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana II
6) Killer Clown, Psycho Clown, Zombie Clown b Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz
7) La Parka Jr. b Zorro, Konnan [copa contreras 2009]

La Parka got a hold of the cane and hit people until he got the won. They’re setting up a Brian/Dizzy hair vs mask match here. Dizzy turned rudo at some point – maybe that’s why Atomic Boy changed his name.

IWRG (SAT) 02/21 Arena Xochimilco [The Gladiatores]
1) Comando Gama b Keshin Black
2) Gemelo Fantastico I & Gemelo Fantastico II b Anticristo Jr. & Vampiro Metalico
3) Black Terry, Cerebro Negro, Fantasma de la Opera b Chico Che, Fenix, Miss Gaviota
4) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Dr. Cerebro, Freelance, Multifacetico [IWRG IC TRIOS]
5) Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Scorpio Jr., Tinieblas Jr. b Head Hunter I, Hijo del Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

Top two matches were all about teams falling apart. Junior Dinamitias and Head Hunter fell out after Hunter screwed something up. Similarly, Dr. Cerebro and Freelance could not go from having a hair match to teaming up successfully, Cerebro costing his team the match and leading his usual trios parnters (Cerebro Negro and Black Terry) into a beatdown of Freelance and Multifacetico. Tecnicos want a shot at the DF Trios titles now.

Vampiro Metalico hasn’t been here since 2007. Use that knowledge responibly.

IWRG (SUN) 02/22 Arena Naucalpan [The Gladiatores]
1) Halcon 2000 b Imperio Azteca
2) Goleador & Miss Gaviota b King Drako & Vampiro Metalico
3) Black Terry, Eragon, Trauma I b Anticristo Jr., Fantasma de la Opera, Nemesis IWRG
4) Freelance, Multifacetico, Zatura b Arlequin, Avisman, Bushi
5) Head Hunter I & Head Hunter II DQ Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. & Universo 2000

Universo 2000 replaced Mascara Ano 2000 Sr., and Hijo del Cien Caras ran in the end for the DQ. Head Hunters still want that tag title match, though Unvierso wants a Dinamitas vs Foreigners cage match.

Semifinal third fall saw big dives from Freelance and Avisman to wipe out Arlequin and Multifacetico. That left Zatura and Bushi, and Zatura got Bushi with a German suplex. Zatura wants a lightweight title match.

Black Terry filled in on the tecnico side for Trauma II, and I guess they moved Fantasma de la Opera so he’d have an old rudo rival to feud with. (Arlequin replaced Judas el Traidor.) Terry pinned Fantasma using the ropes to win for his team.

CMLL (SUN) 02/22 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Relampago Azul b Skaxy
2) Astaroth & Nube Roja DQ Ebola & Valentin Mayo
3) Magnum & Metatron b Rafaga & Rey Trueno
4) La Mascara, Mictlan, Shocker b Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto [torneo, quarterfinal]
5) Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca b Blue Panther, Mascara Dorada, Stuka Jr. [torneo, semifinal]
6) Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca b La Mascara, Mictlan, Shocker [torneo, final]

Covered the main stuff on Monday. The tag matches would seem to be part of the tournament they were doing here, but there’s no mention of it. Instead, they seem to be building a hair match between Nube Roja and Valentin Mayo, who was disqualified for excessive violence.

CMLL (TUE) 02/24 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [MT]
7) Averno, Mephisto, Satanico b Blue Panther, Mascara Dorada, Mictlan

Averno snuck and fouled Panther while Satanico had the ref, then Satanico picked up the win. This main event was a celebration of Satanico reaching 35 years (and 8 months?) of wrestling.

CMLL (TUE) 02/24 Arena Mexico [CMLL, Avellaneda @ box y lucha]
1) Angel Azteca Jr.Sombra de PlataCamorraZayco
2) ElectricoPequeño OlímpicoShockercitoPequeño Damian 666Pequeño ViolenciaSombrita
3) Lady ApacheMarcelaSahoriPrincesa BlancaPrincesa SujeiRosa Negra
4) Hector GarzaHijo del FantasmaToscanoEphestoMisterioso IITerrible
5) ShockerUltimo Guerrero

Ultimo Guerrero lost clean, again. Shocker apparently is jumping Dos in line for a title shot, since Shocker/UG for the Heavyweight title will be next week on the monthly fan appreciation show.

Princesa Blanca and Marcela are stil feuding. The rudas were DQed in the first fall for excessive violence and the tecnicas took fall two (so yes, they only go two falls for those who root for such things.)

02/24: SLP, Shocker/UG

CMLL (WED) 02/18 Auditorio Miguel Barragan de San Luis Potosi [El Mojado @ el Martinete]
1) Lover Boy, Turbo-X, X-Turbo b Crazy Star, Mensajero, Tigre del Ring
2) Mascarita Dorada & Ultimo Dragoncito b Pequeño Damian 666 & Pierrothito
3) Dragon Rojo Jr. & Virus b Hijo del Faraon & Valiente
4) Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corleone, Mascara Dorada b Lizmark Jr., Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
5) Místico b Averno [CMLL WELTER]

Looks like one side of the building was full, but there was a completely empty section on the other side. Hijo del Faraon was hurt in his match.

ESTO previews tonight’s CMLL card and Dragon Rojo Jr. fighting Tuberculosis, vowing to defeat it in straight falls. I did not make that part up.

The big match is Shocker vs Utlimo Guerrero in a singles match. FWIW, they’ve faced before:

2002-12-13 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-02-07 Arena Mexico Shocker b Último Guerrero
2003-02-14 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-03-06 Arena Isabel de Cuernavaca Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-03-26 Arena Coliseo Acapulco Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2003-06-17 Arena Coliseo Shocker b Último Guerrero
2003-06-24 Arena Coliseo Último Guerrero b Shocker [CMLL LH]
2004-01-24 Arena Xochimilco Shocker DQ Último Guerrero
2004-05-09 Arena Coliseo Shocker b Último Guerrero [NWA LH]
2005-02-13 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara Shocker b Último Guerrero [CMLL LH]
2007-01-15 Arena Puebla Shocker b Último Guerrero
2007-04-27 Arena Mexico Último Guerrero b Shocker
2007-11-12 Arena Puebla Último Guerrero b Shocker
2009-02-24 Arena Mexico Shocker vs Ultimo Guerrero

7 wins for Ultimo, 6 wins for Shocker. Shocker could tie it up tonight! Again, if Shocker wins, he gets a title shot in the future, though no one knows when that day may be. (Note they even skipped around that topic on Ras de Lona.)

ROH is bringing in Blue Demon Jr., Incognito, and Magno to their Houston Wrestlemania weekend shows. It’d be nice if this went well, but I don’t see them mixing well with the ROH tpes. On the upside, Generico can finally team with his fellow Mexicans.

02/18: Mexico, Perros del Mal jumps, Dos Leyenda

CMLL (TUE) 02/17 Arena Mexico [ESTO]

4) Dragon Rojo Jr.FelinoSangre AztecaHijo del FantasmaMascara DoradaValiente 5) La MascaraShockerVolador Jr. DQ Heavy MetalNegro CasasUltimo Guerrero

Heavy Metal replaced Mr. Niebla. Main event came down to Shocker and UG. Ultimo fouled Shocker and faked his own foul, and the refs actually DQed the right person for once. Ultimo did retain the heavyweight title over Garza in Puebla on Monday, but Shocker made a challenge for it after this match (and Dos is still waiting for his match.) Ultimo made the same “beat me in a singles match and you’ll get a title match” bit.

Nothing much for the rest of this show.

Pequeno Halloween, Mr. Aguilita, and (Pequeno) Cosmico have jumped to Perros del Mal, according to an interview with ESTO. The other Halloween was also formerly introduced as a members of the promotion. Perro and Damian made a point of saying they were no calling guys up to recruit, but these guys had come to them looking for work.

Mini Halloween and Mr. Aguilita (who just worked Sunday) leaving while Pequeno Damian stays breaks up the Mini Familia de Tijuana/Mini Perros del Mal, one of the funnest groups of the last 18 months. The division had moved on to the Pierrothito/Warrior/Violencia group of rudos, and with as few minis matches that make the shows per week, it makes a lot of sense to move on if you’ve got a chance to get move bookings. It’ll be sad to see them go to the land of limited TV exposure.

Cosmico was barely used by CMLL. He hasn’t been on a show since the cage match. Before the lead up to that, he hadn’t been used since the lightweight tournament in September. So it’s hard to say he’ll be missed when no one realized he wasn’t around.

Meanwhile, in Reforma, Perro Aguayo Jr. sets up some simple ground rules for a mask vs hair match with El Hijo del Santo. Just two small requests:

1) it must happen on a Perros del Mal show
2) Santo must take the mask of Blue Demon Jr. or Dr. Wagner Jr. or LA Park to prove he’s on Perro Jr.’s level

Just say “no”, Perro, it’ll be a lot quicker.

CMLL.com announced the Dos Leyenda show (03/20) will honor Salvador Lutteroth (as it does every year) and Cavernario Galindo.

Televisa is doing it’s annual sports awards, including luchador of the year. WWE airing on Televisa has solved the problem of “how do you chose 3 guys from 2 promotions.” This year’s candidates are John Cena, Mesias, and Blue Panther. Right now, Cena and Mesias are about even on web voting, but Cena is blowing everyone away on cell phone voting. Also, did you know Villano V actually beat Blue Panther? Little trivia there for you.

Speaking of, Milenio has a column which briefly mentions Villano V is upset with CMLL. V5’s said to feel he was ignored after his mask win, pushed off to the side, and so he’s not responding to the idea of a rematch with Panther (or the double stip with UG and V3.) After the mask match, V5 only appeared 4 more times in Arena Mexico the rest of the year (though he’s been on a lot early this year as they’ve started the program back up.)

On el Martinete, rabano enmascarado posted photos and results from a AAA show in Poza Rica. I don’t know how many people they can fit in that building (3000? 4000?) but it looks packed.

Ovaciones’ big story is about CMLL mounting a campaign against tuberculois, with a press confrence tommorow. Atlantis is the guy in charge, and will go to schools to speak about it.

The other story that seems to be posted everywhere today is Arkangel and others going over to Nitro’s house to visit him. I don’t know why this is news; persumbably they didn’t wait a month to check in on him after hurting his knee. If there’s some angle coming out of this, then that’s news and I guess it is nice to remind people that Nitro still exists.

Mr. Reyes posted photos of last weekend’s Neza show over on his mySpace. Nice bit of Scorpio Jr. and Villano III signing a clipboard to make their (teased) hair match more offical than the usual empty challenges.

Etecetra has a genreal article on Titans en el Ring.

ESPNDeportes writes about the UWE cage match. Even though Mano Negra lost, he does not concede deficiet, which kinda renders the whole thing a bit pointless.

Guerreros del Ring #178 has the Hijos del Averno on the cover.

Box Y Lucha #2910 has Charly Manson on the cover and also has a “Super Crazy says he’s not going to AAA!” article. We’ll see tonight.

Ohtani’s Jacket looks thru some Lizmark in AAA and Peste Negra vs Sagrado/Mascara/Volador from Puebla.

But what a sorry bunch of technicos. They all look the same, they wrestle the same and I don’t know how I’m supposed to tell them apart. If it were up to me, I’d shoot the lot.
