07/16: TripleMania, Coliseo, IWRG, Monterrey, Neza

cmll/gangs all here

Haven’t seen a news report on TripleMania, but there are still skattered bits from fan reports. I’d lead this off with an TripleMania picture, but there’s apparently 2 in all the land, and you’ve seen them.

Black Terry Jr. says there was a video for Ricky Marvin coming in September, but it’s not clear if this is just him working with the group while in Japan or what. Lita’s band performed after the main event due to time issues. He thinks the Chessman fall sell was more angle than actual death. I seriously looked at the cage photo a dozen times before I figured out that was Chessman taking the bump.

Chessman’s too valuable to the company to be attempting suicide on every major show, they’ve got to put a stop to it – Crazy Boy could do it.

– Skap_fett corrects a couple of finishes (opener, Guapos), lists Super Calo’s real name as Rafael Garcia, runs down the large injury list: Scoria (who wasn’t technically in a match!), Joe Lider, Laredo Kid, Zorro, Chessman, La Parka Jr. – those last two were hurting bad.
Dhani says Black Pearl was with the rudos in the Atomicos match, making it 5 v 4.

AAA TV (SUN) 07/15 Toreo de Cuatro Caminos
1) Alfa, Casandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro b Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata
2) Cuervo & Ozz DRAW Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG]
3) Gran Apache & Super Fly b Laredo Kid & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
4) Super Fly b Super Calo [mask]
5) Fuerza Guerrera b Juventud Guerrera [street]
6) Alberije, El Elegido, Super Porky b Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
7) Head Hunter I, Rikishi, Ron Killings, Sabu b La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, the Animal, Zorro
8) Mesias L Kenzo Suzuki, Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson, X-Pac [cage, hair]

I’m going to wait till Triple A or Super Lucha gives me official results before I do the results post, to save me from edits later. I’m still not sure about the tag title match. It’ll all end up in one place in the end.

An article that got picked up all over the place talks about AAA’s planned expansion in to the US. Not much new; I didn’t know Televisa didn’t want to produce the TV show in 2003. They list Chicago, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and New York as cities where AAA will be going, but I’m not sure if they mean live events or if PPVs will just be available.

CMLL (SUN) 07/22 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Astro Boy & Trueno vs Jeque & Messala
2) Lady Apache, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Hiroka, Seductora
3) Fabian el Gitano, Leono, Tony Rivera vs Nosferatu, Satanico, Virus
4) Felino, Heavy Metal, La Mascara vs Emilio Charles Jr., Hirooki Goto, Okumura
5) Alex Koslov, Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Terrible, Villano III, Villano V
6) Rey Bucanero vs Atlantis [CMLL LH]

I know y’all said you don’t like this card, but I’m thrilled for that main event. Hopefully they’ll get more than 5 minutes this time. And the opener should be fine. It’s tougher defending the stuff in the middle, though building to Amapola/Marcela in a singles match should be fun.

Wagner’s been booked as a tecnico everywhere outside of Arena Mexico. He’s turned on Mistico when he’s teamed with him, but no one else. I think we’ll know if he’s a long term rudo by that finish (so there’s something redeemable about the match – or maybe it’s just build for Dos Caras Jr. versus Terrible for the Heavyweight Championship Of The World! I’m intrigued by the thought of that match too.

indy (SUN) 07/15 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]

2) Súper Comando & Zayco b Rayo Tapatío I & Rayo Tapatío II
3) Astro Boy & Super Nova b Apocalipsis & Ramstein
4) Fabián el Gitano, Leono, Maximo b Dr. X, Loco Max, Nitro

4) Fobia, Metalico, Tigre Blanco vs Arkangel, Hooligan, Loco Max
5) Dos Caras Jr., Maximo, Negro Casas vs Damian 666, Halloween, Terrible

IWRG (THU) 07/12 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Tortuguillo Ninja b Akuma
2) Macho II & Puma King b Celestial & Misterio Verde
3) Asesino Negro, Black Terry, Dr. Mortus b Ave Fenix, Kid Tiger, Star Boy
4) Kai, Ultraman Jr., Yamato DQ Cerebro Negro, Fantasma de la Ópera, Tony Rivera
5) el Hijo Del Anibal, Máscara Sagrada, Negro Casas, Negro Navarro b Cien Caras Jr., Enfermero Jr., Hijo de Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

Black Terry attacked Fantasma de la Opera, wanting a shot at the Welterweight title. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot at Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. & Hijo de Cien Caras’s tag titles. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot, got that? Okay, look at this:

IWRG (THU) 07/19 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Misterio Verde & Tortugillo Ninja vs Macho II & Rockero del Diablo
2) Kai, Sasaki, Yamato vs 911, AK47, Fierro [EdM TRIOS]
3) Fantasma de la Opera vs Black Terry [IWRG IC WELTER]
4) Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Suicida vs Cyborg, Guardia, Xibalba [IWRG IC TRIOS]
5) Hijo de Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. vs Hijo de Pierroth & Pierroth [IWRG IC TAG]

Pierroth != Negro Navarro. That’s a lot of title matches. Mexico State trios are vacant going into that match. Los Cerebros/Suicida are the Trios champs. Fantasma de la Opera turned tecnico and the Japanese turned rudo since the last time we really got weekly info on this group.

In Guadalajara, Dr. Wagner Jr. did retain the UWA World Heavyweight Championship.

CMLL AZTECA (WED) 07/25 Arena Xalapa Lineup [El Sol de Xalapa]
1) Jaguar, Linterna Verde vs Guerrero del Infierno, Soldado Anonimo
2) Samuray, Gabriel o Gabriela vs Perro Mocho Jr., Rey Garfio Jr.
3) Dark Angel, Luna Magica vs Hiroka, Mima Shimoda
4) La Sombra, Valiente, Stuka Jr. vs Nitro, Dr. X, Skandalo
5) Mistico, Ultimo Guerrero vs Averno, Dr. Wagner Jr. [pi]

That’s going to suck for Mistico. Article is actually more about the people who run the arena talking about how things have improved much lately (since a negative article about the arena.)

In Notimex, Wagner and UG crow about winning the tag team titles. Mask vs Mask challenge, check. Full show recap from Notimex is here.

El Sol de Tijuana writes about the intimate atmosphere of the VIP Tijuana show.

TripleMania discussion

box y lucha

I’m busy at the moment, but if you want a thread to discuss it, here you go.

I’ll update this with results when I get a chance (if they come in)

Update:

So far, we’ve got from ByL

1) Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata b Alfa, Casandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro
2) Cuervo & Ozz DRAW Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG]

Lider and Ozz tied, I think. This feud will go on.

3) Gran Apache & Laredo Kid b Super Fly & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
4) Super Fly b Super Calo [mask]

This is actually a change from what was earlier announced as possible, that’s why we assumed Laredo won Calo’s mask instead. Will have to confirm later in the evening.

5) Fuerza Guerrera b Juventud Guerrera [street]
6) Alberije, El Elegido, Super Porky DQ Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido

run-in by the unmasked Super Calo, now wrestling as Jordy Stone.

7) Head Hunter I, Rikishi, Ron Killings, Sabu b La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, the Animal, Zorro

Rudo surprise is Rikishi.

Tecnico surprise is “The Animal”. Not sure if it’s the Road Warrior, but it’s an unmasked guy. I have no idea. I hope they’re pulling my leg.

Rikishi wins with the Bonzai Drop on Zorro.

Lita & Luchagores performed here.

8) Kenzo Suzuki L Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico, Mesias, X-Pac [cage, hair]

Kenzo lost his hair, but the story was Chessman taking another cage bump, this one to the floor. He might have missed his target, and he definitely was carried to the back and put in ambulance. Can’t tell if this is an angle or not.

I’ll bump this to the top if full results come in tonight.

TripleMania 15 Predictions

Might as well go match by match.

1) Alfa, Cassandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro vs Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata

Backstory: Uh, none between these two teams. Like all minorities in wrestling, Cassandro and Pimpinela must either team or feud. They’ve been feuding on off for 18 months. The biggest angle is intrateam, with Gran Apache trying to hook Alfa and Fabi Apache up and having no idea who Alfa is under the mask.

Prediction: As you can see from the records info, tecnicos general win at TripleMania. More so for the random pointless match. This isn’t quite random – if we’re to believe Alfa is going to stay as Alfa for a few more weeks, they could set up a Mixed Tag feud. They also might do something with Cassandro and Pimpi, because they really need another regular exotico who’s better than Polvo, but they always try to do something with Cassandro and then he’s gone two tapings later.

I’m going go with the safe bet and assume the tecnicas win.

2) Cuervo & Ozz vs Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG, ladder]

Backstory: The literal translation for AAA’s stip is “match of steps”, but I think there’s going to be something connecting the steps vertically. Anyway, these two factions have been feuding to some extent since the MPs formed and needed someone to take their moves. The Mexican Powers beat the Sect to win the Atomico titles last year, Cuervo & Ozz beat Crazy Boy & Joe Lider to win the tag titles at Rey de Reyes, and and the Sect took the Atomico titles back when Psicosis turned on his teammates. This will have Extreme Tiger and Scoria as seconds.

Prediction: A homage to indy matches that are a homage to WWE matches that allllll may be better than this. Hopefully no one dies or is horribly crippled, because you know there’s a chance. Lots of stunts, probably a logic hole or two. Crazy Boy & Joe Lider are surely winning to finish the title exchange.

3) Juventud Guerrera vs Fuerza Guerrera [street]

Backstory: The yearly “Octagon and Fuerza are TOTALLY going to have a mask match at TripleMania this year!” train got derailed earlier than usual. Juvi was working as Octagon’s second, so they just elevated him into the feud and made it Guerrera vs Guerrera. There’s no hair or mask on the line, and it appears that it’ll be a street fight, just like the match in Monterrey earlier this month.

Prediction: Another chance to get random people on the show; Pirata Morgan for sure. If there’s an ultimate finish to this feud, it’s surely going to be Juvi losing his hair, so I think Juvi gets his big win here.

4) El Apache & Super Fly vs Laredo Kid & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
5) Super Calo or Gran Apache vs Laredo Kid or Super Fly [mask, hair]

Backstory: Having run Billy Boy off, turning his teammates evil, things were looking for Gran Apache and his partner Super Calo. The Air Force ruined the fun, pulling off repeated upsets in May 2007, reaching it’s highest point with Laredo & Super Fly winning by DQ over Apache & Fly. Apache’s team has turned it around since then, but both sides have crossed paths so often in the months leading up to TripleMania, this was pretty inevitable.

Prediction: “Jordy Stone” working spot shows kinda gives this one away. Apache’s hair has to be saved for Billy Boy and Laredo Kid’s being pushed to the moon. Someone Super is losing their mask. There’s probably never going to be a better feud for Calo to drop his, and it returns the favor of people losing their masks to him at TripleManias past. Apache’s team wins, possibly with Alfa helping out to cement his relationship with Apache, and Laredo beats Calo clean.

6) Alebrije, Elegido, Super Porky vs Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido

Backstory: Alebrije has been feuding with the Guapos, with the focus on Cuije and Guapito. Cuije probably should be out of his walker by this point. Otherwise, it’s a break comedy match so these guys get on the card.

Prediction: Cuije has been pretty well being killed and this is a break match, so the tecnicos should win.

7) ?, La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, Zorro vs ?, Head Hunter I, Ron Killings, Sabu

Backstory: They are people who don’t like each other. THERE YOU GO. It’s a basic AAA Tecnicos vs Foreign Legion members. Black Pearl or Rikishi may be the mystery man, but surely Abismo Negro will make an appearance to continue his feud with Latin Lover. Parka will probably do more comedy than usual, because he still seems to be hurting. Everyone has been rumored for the tecnico spot, and I don’t know who it’ll be. I don’t expect it to be a big deal.

Prediction: Rudos have to get one, so I’ll pick this run. Probably not as many run-ins here, because they’ll be saving them for the next match.

8) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs Kenzo Suzuki, Mesias, X-Pac [cage, hair]

Backstory: Cibernetico beat Mesias in a casket match, put the casket in the ocean, and set it on fire. Somehow, that did not end the feud or Mesias’ life, so it goes on here with the two respective factions. They haven’t been calling this a Cage of Death, so I’m thinking there are some special rules in play. I have no idea what these rules are. Perhaps AAA knows! Probably not, no.

Prediction: Lots of run-ins, quite obviously. Half the people in the is average for TripleMania main events. People diving off the top of the cage, you can set your watch by that. Popular thought seems to pick X-Pac here, but Kenzo losing his hair in this type of match seems about right. It’s a lesser finish for a main event, but I can’t believe they’d do something more until that’s the standard.

Almost all tecnicos winning. I guess the rudos get revenge the next night. If anything beats the mask match, I’ll be surprised, but there could be some good stuff here. I hope they just talk over the match layouts before time, so we don’t get 8 matches of rudos jumping tecnicos for 4 minutes and tecnicos all making their comeback on missed corner charges.

TripleMania XV: records

I’m going to do a full preview of TripleMania Friday (I think), but inspired by some WrestleMania coverage, I did some research and worked up some stats on everyone who’s on the card right now.

Pro Wrestling History was a huge help for this. I used their card listings (which, come to think of it, we should have on one of these sites around here), and counted all the individual shows in years where multiple TripleManias were held.

1) Alfa, Cassandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro vs Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata

* This is Alfa’s first TripleMania.
* Cassandro is 0-0-1, having appeared last year in a match with no finish
* Fabi is 0-3, including losing two prior Relevos AAA matches at TM12 and 14.
* Mini Abismo is 0-6-1

* Cinthia Moreno is 1-0, with her only appearance in a TM12’s Relevos AAA opener
* I believe this Octagoncito is 6-0, and the prior is 3-0-1; I’m figuring everything starting with TripleMania V is the newer one.
* Oriental is 1-0-1, but hasn’t been on a TripleMania since 2002.
* Pimpi is 3-2-1

2) Cuervo & Ozz vs Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG]

* Cuervo & Ozz made their TripleMania debuts last year in the no-contest Atomico title match, under those names
* As Pathfinder, Ozz was 2-0, but had last appeared on TripleMania 8 from Japan.
* Crazy Boy & Joe Lider are making the TripleMania in-ring debuts

3) Juventud Guerrera vs Fuerza Guerrera [street]

* Juvi is 4-2-1 at TripleMania events.
* Fuerza is one of two to wrestle at the first TripleMania and on this show
** Martha Villalobos, Vicky Carranza, Lola Gonzalez, Octagon, and Konnan also appeared at the first TripleMania and are on the roster, but not wrestling for this show. Abismo Negro wrestled as Winners on that show, and may yet wrestle on this one.
* Fuerza has a 3-7 record, including losing the Mexican Tag belts to the Aguayos in 1998.
* As a team, Juvi and Fuerza are 2-0.

4) El Apache & Super Fly vs Laredo Kid & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
5) Super Calo or Gran Apache vs Laredo Kid or Super Fly [mask, hair]
* Gran Apache is 3-2 at TripleMania, with a win last year.
* Both Super Fly and Laredo Kid debuted on TripleMania in last year’s Mexican Atomicos match.
* Super Calo is the other TripleMania I hold over. He teamed with Winners and Salsero to beat May Flowers, Rudy Reyna and Baby Sharon. Calo is 7-2, including winning Angel Mortal and Winners’s mask in separate 1995 shows. He last wrestled on the 2003 TripleMania show.

Over the history of TripleMania, 9 men have lost their masks:

Mascara Ano 2000, to Perro Aguayo at TM1
Angel Mortal, to Super Calo at TM3 Part A (Orizaba)
Payasito Rojo, loser of a mini cage match at TM3 Part A (Orizaba)
Marabunta, to Winners at TM3 Part B (Tonala)
Winners, to Super Calo at TM3 Part C (Madero)
Halcon Dorado Jr., loser of a cage match at TM4 Part C (Madero)
La Calaca, loser of a cage match at TMV Part B (Toreo)
Maniaco, loser of a cage match at TMX Part B (Madero)
Muerte Cibernetico, TO La Parka Jr. at TMXIV (Toreo)

6) Alebrije, Elegido, Super Porky vs Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido

* Alebrije is 4-2
* Elegido and Porky are making their TripleMania debuts. Brazo de Plata debuted in AAA in a non-wrestling capacity last year.
* Alan Stone and Zumdido debuted in a loss last year.
* Scorpio Jr. is 1-2 at TripleMania. Before last year, Scorpio had last appeared in 1995.

7) ?, La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, Zorro vs ?, Head Hunter I, Ron Killings, Sabu

* La Parka Jr. is 6-0 at TripleMania, having picked up Muerte’s mask and Cibernetico’s hair along the way.
* Latin Lover is 11-4. He’s had more matches than TripleManias, thanks to years iwth multiple shows.
* Zorro is 3-2, with both his losses coming in title matches.
* Head Hunter I is 0-1, previously teaming with his brother.
* Ron Killings and Sabu are making their TripleMania debuts

8) Charly Manson, Chessman, Cibernetico vs Kenzo Suzuki, Mesias, X-Pac [cage, hair]

* Charly picked up his first win at a TripleMania last year. He’s 1-3 overall.
* Chessman is 0-3-1 at TripleManias
* Cibernetico is 3-9 all time.

* Kenzo and Waltman are making their TripleMania debuts.
* Mesias is 0-1, losing his mask last year.

* 7 hairs have been lost at TripleMania. Two men have lost hair twice.

Jerry Estrada, to Heavy Metal at TripleMania II, Part A (Aguscalientes)
Jake Roberts, to Konnan at TripleMania II, Part C (Tijuana)
May Flowers, to Leon Negro at TripleMania V, Part A (Tijuana)
Tirantes (referee), when his team lost at TripleMania VII (Madreo)
Pirata Morgan, loser of a triangle chain match with Cobarde & Sangre Chicana at TripleMania IX (Mexico City)
Tirantes (referee), when representative Sangre Chicana lost at TripleMania X-B (Madreo)
