08/08: Coliseo, injuries

CMLL (TUE) 08/07 Arena Coliseo [CMLL]
1) Shockercito & Tzuki DQ Pequeno Violencia & Pierrothito
2) Arkangel, Loco Max, Nitro b Astro Boy, Molotov, Trueno
3) Nosferatu, Okumura, Skandalo b Mictlan, Stuka Jr., Super Nova
4) Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto b Alex Koslov, Felino, Maximo
5) Dos Caras Jr., Heavy Metal, Volador Jr. b Damian 666, Mr. Aguila, Terrible

Nosferatu got away with a foul on Stuka in the third. Tzuki’s mask was yanked in the opener.

CMLL.com reports Ultimo Dragoncito will be out 10 weeks because of an ankle fracture suffered on Saturday in Queretaro.

Ovaciones says Atlantis will return to the ring on Sunday, for his previously scheduled match in AC Guadalajara. I hope this means his injury was much less severe than it sounded and he’s not rushing back for a meaningless match, but I feel naive even hoping that.

The newspaper also says the AAA Heavyweight Tournament includes eight men, so we’ve got all the first round matches (unless they just mean eight men so far.) After reading AAA’s blog on the tournament, I’m now sure we’re supposed to treat the UWA Light Heavyweight, Mexican National Heavyweight, and IWC Heavyweight (and/or the Campeon de Campeons – that’s what it looked like the first time I saw it) as vacant and possibly defunct.

It doesn’t actually matter how AAA’s treated it’s titles in the past (or how CMLL treats them now), because the guy who made those decisions is gone and the new crew seems to have a different philosophy on these things. They’re rebooting the importance of titles by ditching all the olds one and creating a new one, and deserve the benefit of the doubt they’ll do something with the new belt.

Super Calo and Chris Stone visited Ovaciones’s office, at the same time. That’d be a far more amusing sentence if Chris Stone really had been doing the Super Calo gimmick. Anyway, the Stones hope to do the trios thing soon – perhaps they too can win a version of the Mexico State Trios titles.

indy (SUN) 08/26 Parque Deportivo Beto Avila
1) Apolo, Celestial, Conquistador vs Dr. Crimen, Practicante, Triple XXX
2) Huracan Ramirez & Huracan Ramirez Jr. vs Coco Rojo & Coco Verde
3) Hijo del Santo & Tinieblas vs Bestia Salvaje & Negro Navarro

Notiver’s preview article hypes that show as the first time Hijo del Santo & Tinieblas have ever teamed…in Veracruz. Somehow, I doubt even that.

CMLL IBARRA (SAT) 09/15 Salon Ferrocarillero de Frontera [Zocalo]
1) King Balam & Super Brazo vs Iviz Guajardo & Maniacop
2) LA Park vs Dr. Wagner Jr., Ultimo Guerrero, Blue Panther

I had not heard that four way were the In thing this summer.

06/26: Coliseo, Halcon

CMLL.com/last Tuesday

CMLL (TUE) 06/26 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Rayo Tapatío I & Rayo Tapatío II b Pólvora & Vaquero
2) Bam Bam, Electrico, Fantasy DQ Mr. Aguilita, Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Halloween
3) Hirooki Goto, Ohara, Shigeo Okumura b Leono, Tigre Blanco, Tony Rivera
4) Felino, La Sombra, Mictlán b Euforia, Nosferatu, Virus
5) Atlantis, Olímpico, Universo 2000 b Blue Panther, Heavy Metal, Rey Bucanero

Evil Dark Monkey helped the rudos win the main event. Did the name contest for him get dropped? Mini Damian fouled Bam Bam in the segunda.

AAA has a preview of the 07/01 taping. No new details.

El Halcon #93 is up. Inside:
– Interview with Mini Halloween & Mini Damian, who both note they were really awful when they debuted (prior to this gimmicks.) They’re not awful now. To prepare for last year’s bodybuilding contest, Mini Damian says he dropped from 85 kg to 73 (187 lb to 160). They want Mini Olimpico’s championship (they accuse him of hiding the belt so he doesn’t have to defend it) and Ultimo Dragoncito’s mask.
– preview of a card in Chipas on 07/14
– Interview with Euforia & Nosfearatu. Euforia shares the same trainer as Sobearno Jr, but claims he’s never ever used another name “professionally.” Nosferatu says he wrestled as Camelot three times while living in Chicago – if jtron or Rob or anyone from CPW is reading this, do you recall him at all? They note it’ll be difficult to surpass the success of prior Infernales, but they’re going to try. Satanico’s a very demanding leader.
– History of tag team champions in Mexico, from Super Luchas 216

AAA (MON) 07/18 Auditorio Miguel Barragan [El Sol de San Luis (Potosi)]
1) Bat Boy, Chico Malo, Flechador Justiciero vs Bogar, Principe del Futuro, Simon Blanco
2) America, Cosaco Loco, Maniaco vs Apolo Star, Centella Inca, Sexy Salazar
3) Espiritu, Picudo, Silver Cat vs Aero Star, Brazo de Plata, Super Astro
4) Tiffany & Zumbido vs Cinthia Moreno & Oriental [AAA MIXED TAG]
5) Gronda II, Intocable, La Parka Jr. vs Alan Stone, Head Hunter I, Muerte Cibernetica

BBC Mundo interviews El Hijo del Santo.

Lucha Libre events are offically banned from Auditorio Municipal Torreon.

Mexican Wrestlers Not In Mexico

Chris D pointed out a couple of cameos

06/22 UWA Hardcore: Tyson Dux b Brian Lee – Lee’s apparently part of the Dragon Gym group, and UWA’s the Canadian affilate, so there you go.

Another Dragon guy, Amigo Suzuki worked in CHIKARA over the weekend.

06/22
Amigo Suzuki b Rex Sterling [qf, Young Lions Cup]
Chuck Taylor b Lince Dorado, Moscow the Communist Bovine, Player Uno, Ice Cream Jr., Amigo Suzuki [sf, Young Lions Cup]

06/23
Hijo de Ice Cream, Ice Cream Jr., Amigo Suzuki b Gran Akuma, Icarus, Max Boyer

06/24
Billy Roc b Amigo Suzuki

Pantera is headed back to the group at some point (and is going to AJPW at some point prior.) As always, I’d point you towards ChikaraFans.com, who provided these results, for something a bit more coherent about the group. I really need to add a link to them to the sidebar.

Turbo, Skayde, Black Pentagon and Black Thunder are headed to Dragon Gate from July 8th to August 13th.

This is not news, but I think everyone would be well off if Chessman went to NOAH for a tour, like ASAP. I wouldn’t even care about him winning, but it’d be good for him to work with theoretically better guys his size. Whoever’s been laying out his matches of late has done a nice job of making his spear mean something, and I get the impression they’re very slowly grooming him for more down the line. Still, if there’s ever a time to do it, it’s right now as they’re pushing Cibernetico teaming with the tecnicos he hasn’t before. You don’t need Chessman around for that.

05/30: Coliseo, Mistico’s doctor concerned, AAA in Japan, Villanos

CMLL (TUE) 05/29 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Mini Olimpico & Ultimo Dragoncito b Mini Damian 666 & Mini Halloween
2) Sensei, Stuka Jr., Tony Rivera b Caligula, Hooligan, Messala
3) Felino, Mascara Purpura, Mictlan b Euforia, Loco Max, Nosferatu
4) Heavy Metal, Maximo, Rey Bucanero DQ Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) Ultimo Guerrero b Volador Jr.

That’s Euforia and Nosferatu’s first loss as a CMLL team, assuming I’m reading the results right. I’m doubting myself, because they just kinda loss, though it was more about Loco Max here. Ultimo beat Voldor clean, Averno fouled Maximo for being Maximo.

Radio Formula has an interview with Mistico’s doctor. The doctor, Mario Garcia Orozco, is concerned, because Mistico was to rest another week, and skipped a checkup because he had to make a booking. Orozco says Mistico’s left shoulder is 75%.

AAA NOAH (MON) 09/03 Tokyo Differ Ariake [Mario Rivero @ box y lucha]
1) Mascarita Sagrada, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Histeria
2) Fabi Apache, El Apache, Pimpinela Escarlata vs Cassandro, ? (NOAH), ? (OZ ACADEMY)
3) Super Fly, Laredo Kid, Pegasso vs ?, ?, ? (3 NOAH Juniors)
4) Abismo Negro, Mr. Niebla, Histeria, Antifaz vs Juventued Guerrera, Joe Lider, Crazy Boy, Ricky Marvin
5) Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson vs KENTA, Taiji Ishimori, Marafuji

Lineup subject to change! This would just be one event as part of a tour, I think. Mini Histeria is Rocky Marvin according to this thread.

Ovaciones has an interview with the Villanos. They’re teasing a Villano III/Atlantis rematch or Atlantis taking on one of the other Villanos in a mask match, but I presume it’s just a tease to give them an instant issue while they’re in. It’s better off it’s just a tease, you don’t want to go back seven years later.

Ovaciones notes Lizmark Jr. is the third masked member of Perros del Mal, joining Blue Demon and Canek. When was Canek in the group? I don’t recall this at all.

indy (THU) 06/14 Auditorio Municipal Fausto Gutierrez Moreno Casas Geo [El Sol De Tijuana]
1) Hijo del Santo, Latin Lover, Tinieblas vs Fuerza Guerrera, Sangre Chicana, Tornado Negro

Atlas News has a video interview with Lourdes Grobet about her lucha libre photography exhibition in Madrid.

El Hijo de Santo talks to La Jornada de Oriente about the Santo biography.

Some of the Toryumon Mexico guys, who otherwise have seemed to drop off our radar lately, worked in Canada over the weekend (as previously posted in the comments, but I might as well put it here too.)

UWA Canada (SAT) 05/26 St. John’s Hall, Missauga, Ontario
1) Dan Paysa b Oscar Hanaoka
2) Passion Hasegawa b Larry Sweeny
3) Hiromi Horiguchi b Arik Cannnon
4) Chris Sabin b Sonjay Dutt and Brian Lee (Not That One)
5) Claudio Castiagnoli b Toshiya Matsuzaki
6) Lionel Knight b Amigo Suzuki [UWA CANADA LH]
8) Jushin Liger & Puma b Kazuchida Okara & Ultimo Dragon

UWA Canada (SAT) 05/26 St. John’s Hall, Missauga, Ontario
1) Sonjay Dutt b Rascal Matsuzaki
2) Dan Paysan b Passion Hasegawa
3) M-Dogg 20 b Brian Lee
4) Amigo Suzuki b Arik Cannon
5) Derek Wylde b Oscar Hanaoka and Puma
6) Hiromi Horiguchi b Lionel Knight [UWA CANADA LH]
7) Josh Prohibition b Kazuchida Okara
8) Jushin Liger & Ultimo Dragon b Chris Sabin & Alex Shelly

Yea, I had to write “UWA CANADA” just so no one was reading quick and thought these were odd shows for Canek to be headlining. Is it just me, or was there supposed to be a Ohara/Sabin NWA Welterweight match on one of these cards? Ohara’s didn’t appear, so I guess it’s him – hurt or missing?

CHIKARA () 05/26 Hellertown, PA
6) Pantera, Lince Dorado b Larry Sweeney, Claudio Castagnoli

CHIKARA () 05/27 ECW Arena
4) Lince Dorado, Pantera, Player Uno b Ice Cream Jr., Hijo de Ice Cream, Mitch Ryder

Arkangel was supposed to work both these shows, and missed his flight.

Easiest guess on Cibernetico’s surprise tonight at the AAA taping is La Parka Jr., now out of a sling.

04/24: Coliseo, Vampiro, Mass at Arena Mexico

Last night’s Coliseo show was an odd one. Someone felt like booking angles, which is bizarre for a Tuesday show.

CMLL (TUE) 04/24 Arena Coliseo [ovaciones, cmll, DIOS @ box y lucha]
1) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II DQ Caligula & Messala
2) Brillante, Stuka Jr., Tony Rivera b Artillero, Hooligan, Super Comando
3) Euforia, Loco Max, Nosferatu b Felino, Mictlan, Satanico
4) Maximo, Texano Jr., Virus DQ Goto, Ohara, Okumura
5) Alex Koslov, Negro Casas, Shocker b Atlantis, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero

Alex submitted Atlantis in the main event. This is their fourth straight Tuesday opposing each other, and it sounds like it’ll be five, because Alex wants a shot at the NWA Light Heavyweight Title.

Maximo and Texano Jr. got ramped up for their big title defense on Sunday…by turning on each other! It looks like Maximo got a five man beating, with both Texano and Virus attacking him (which someone meant they won by DQ, but never mind.) No idea why – Ovaciones mentions “miscommunication”, and hints we’re already headed to a Virus/Maximo hair match. Sagrado/Texano/Maximo have zero chance of retaining the Mexican trios belts on Sunday.

In the tercera, Satanico returned to do rudo side on a permanent basis, betraying Mictlan and Felino to help his new students (Eufora and Nosferatu.) After the match, the Nuevo Nuevo Nuevo Infernales beat up Loco Max for good measure.

Caligula yanked one of the Tapatios masks. Stuka beat Super Comando.

CMLL (TUE) 05/01 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Thunder Boy vs Milenio
2) Casanova vs Fraile de la Muerte
3) Idolo vs Mr. Trueno
4) Evola vs Danger
5) Leon Blanco vs Egipcio
6) Gallo, Magnum, Stuka vs Malefico, Mascara Magica, Toxico
7) Rayman & Vampiro vs Black Warrior & Eclipse

So he’s back as a tecnico. Good to know.

(El Porvenir) Arena Mexico is often called the cathederal of Lucha Libre. This Saturday, it’s going to be a stand in church. As far as I can tell from the article, they’re having a religion convention at the normal huge church in town. It wraps up on Sunday, but theyr’e not going to be able to hold Saturday mass there as a result, and so they’re renting out Arena Mexico. To cover the rent, they’re selling tickets to church – ringside tickets are 50 pesos ($4.55US). I hope service is randomly interrupted by a Mistico chant.

This means Arena Mexico will have an event three straight days (normal Arena Mexico, mass, special show on Sunday), and also three Saturdays in a row (mass, Luchas 2000, Toryumon)

AAA’s preview of Friday’s taping including Crazy Boy talking about extreme wrestling.

(Suburban Chicago News) About 1.5 hour away from me, in Waukegan, IL, the library will be celebrating Day of the Kid by bringing in Espectro and La Parkita (listed here as brothers) to talk about life as lucha libre wrestler. Those pictures sure look familiar.

(Beaumont Journal) Beaumont, TX’s first ever Cinco de Mayo festival will include some lucha libre matches; main event is Pentagon Black/Xochitl Hamada vs Sicodelico Jr./Miss Vicky. Tickets are $15-$25 for the whole event, including a music peformance which seems to be the main act. You can get the tickets around town, and at ticketmaster.com

El Sol de Tampico has a obit for wrestler Alejandro Montana.

IWRG’s site is still down. So is El Halcon’s.

04/15: new non-champion, Prision Fatal, bad week, CMLL DF lineups,

CMLL.com says Lady Apache has relinquished the Mexican National Women’s Championship. Apache had held the title since 2004, and thru multiple jumps between AAA and CMLL. Before Lady Apache’s first jump, it’d been AAA’s top year-round women’s title. Somewhere along the line, the belt became Lady Apache’s personal championship.

Historically, wrestlers are supposed to drop any National title they hold when they win a World championship in the same division. Lady Apache didn’t, and I presumed it was to guarantee she’d still have a belt when CMLL wanted to move their title onto someone else. Apache dropping the Mexican title would seem to mean she’s not worried about losing the CMLL belt for quite a while. I guess there’s a small chance the commission actually complained about the situation.

(That would also mean it may be a long time before Dark Angel wins a belt, since she wouldn’t be eligible for the Mexican title and would be aced out of the World title.)

CMLL says they’ll run a decision match for the belt in Arena Mexico soon.

According to Ovaciones, today’s IWRG main event is now a La Prision Fatal match, with 10 guys putting up their hair and masks:
– Astro Boy
– Okumura
– Masada
– Fantasma de la Opera
– Kai
– Yamato
– Dr. Cerebro
– Cerebro Negro
– Kraneo
– Esfinge

IWRG’s site is still down.

Ovaciones has a list of Bad Things That Happened This Week
04/07 – Referee El Acapulco died
04/07 – La Parka Jr.’s car accident
04/09 – Loco Max fractured two ribs in Puebla
04/12 – Dos Caras suffered a concussion
04/12 – when a dive goes wrong, Ultimo Dragoncito bruised his testicles
Next Tuesday, Puebla regular Asturiano is undergoing knee surgery.

The latest update on La Parka Jr., also from Ovaciones, is that he’s in Mexico city, and he’s got multiple fractures in his left arm and shoulder.

CMLL cards for the week

CMLL (TUE) 04/17 Arena Coliseo Lineup
1) Tiger Kid, Molotov vs Polvora, Vaquero
2) Marcela, Sahori, Luna Magica vs Hiroka, Amapola, Mima Shimoda
3) Felino, Maximo, Virus vs Ephesto, Misterioso Jr., Arkangel
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Negro vs Halloween, Mr. Aguila, Terrible
5) Alex Koslov vs Atlantis

Big match for Koslov. I don’t think Tiger Kid works a non-IWRG show without Felino. Assuming Tiger Kid is the same guy as Kid Tiger, which may kill me down the road.

CMLL (FRI) 04/20 Arena Mexico
1) Danger & Moltov vs Caligula & Messala
2) Leono, Valiente, Virus vs Euforia, Nosfearatu, Satanico
3) Alex Koslov, Blue Panther, Ultimo Dragon vs Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca, Tarzan Boy
4) Mistico, Negro Casas, Sagrado vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) Marco Corleone, Rey Bucanero, Shocker vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero

This could be an excellent gauge of High Society’s popularity. I figure there will be people leaving after the semimain. It’s Euforia and Nosferatu’s Arena Mexico debuts, and they may make it on CAN52 from here.

CMLL (SUN) 04/22 Arena Mexico – though CMLL doesn’t seem to note this site change on their site, so I dunno. Maybe next week instead?
1) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II vs Polvora & Vaquero
2) Brillante, Tiger Metalico, Tigre Blanco vs Apocalipsis, Dr. X, Hooligan
3) Diana la Cazadora, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Gatubela, Princesa Sujei
4) Hijo de Lizmark, Maximo, Texano Jr. vs Damian 666, Halloween, Mr. Aguila
5) Mistico, Rey Bucanero, Sagrado vs Atlantis, Black Warrior, Eclipse

That semimain is 5/6th rematch. I think it’s possible they switch Lizmark and Sagrado and go with a title match after the show tonight, but then again, this might be the Kids Show and why have the rudos get the win there? This is actually Diana la Cazadora’s first Arena Coliseo match, she’s worked a handful of Arena Mexico matches. I presume this Gatubela is the same women who was working in Arena Coliseo Monterrey in 2003 (and must’ve changed her name, since I haven’t seen her mentioned since – there’s a male wrestler also using that name.)

Brillante is the same guy as Brilliante Jr. in AOL – is he the same guy as the one in Xalapa? I have no idea of the geography of these things.

CMLL FSE has
04/08 Leono, Stuka Jr., Virus b Dr. X, Jeque, Loco Max
04/08 Damián 666, Halloween, Mr. Águila b Máximo, Satánico, Tigre Metálico

FSE is much quieter than the rest of my channels for some reason.

Accion

CMLL: Tag Team Titles. We get a wide shot of the stage side, and the building does lock packed. Mistico bleeds a bunch here – there’s not a focus on it, but the upper half of his mask is turned red.

AAA: Muerte/Kenzo vs Charly/Chessman – more tag team action than you can shake a stick at. Kenzo’s selling is unusual. Chessman embraces his inner high spot demon and tries a top rope corkscrew moonsault. That fails, and the Legion gets the heat. Konnan gets out of his wheelchair long enough to use a cane to cheat, but the Hell Brothers make a comeback and Charly wins with an inverted figure four on Kenzo.

AAA’s TV tapings start back up tonight with a TV in Veracruz. Note that the main event will obviously have to change with no Parka – maybe Intocable or Octagon in his spot?

04/11: Coliseo, Monterrey

CMLL (TUE) 04/10 Arena Coliseo [ova, cmll]
1) Pequeño Violencia & Pierrothito b Celestial & Electrico
2) Super Nova, Trueno, Valiente b Apocalipsis, Hooligan, Ramstein
3) Arkangel de la Muerte, Euforia, Nosferatu b Metro, Satánico, Tony Rivera
4) Eclipse, Ephesto, Shigeo Okumura b Máximo, Texano Jr., Virus
5) Alex Koslov, Heavy Metal, Rey Bucanero DQ Atlantis, Olímpico, Sangre Azteca

Atlantis fouled Alex in the main event. Ovaciones lists “Perrito” as the non-Violencia mini in the opener, but CMLL’s got Pierrothito, who was scheduled to particpate. Same thing with “Europa”/”Euforia” in the tercera.

Nosferatu is listed at 90 KG and 176 cm. FWIW, Soberano Jr. is 95 KG and 182 cm. Don’t have stats on Chamaco Valaguez Jr.

indy (TUE) 04/10 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [rfc]
1) Mini Burro b Tequilita
2) La Furia & Toro Blanco b Arcangel (Monterrey) & Black Nazi
3) Gardenia Azteca & Rosa Salvaje b Borrico & Rudy Reyna
4) Burrito, Sky, Turbina b Guerrero Griego, Potro Jr., Vudu
5) Ejecutor, Hijo de Espanto II, Kriminal, Pancho Tequilla b Corazon Adictor, Enrique Vera, Golden Boy, Rey Apostol
6) Konnan Big b Cepty Boy, Gongora, Torin

amateur @ box y lucha, notable box y lucha poster, went to the Arena Coliseo Guadalajara show, and said the building was full (maybe past capacity) for Mephisto/Mistico. He says it was a pretty good match (and that’s coming from someone not usually a fan of Mistico.)

Mi Morelia has a short article on La Parka Jr.’s crash. He’s not happy with how long it’ll take for him to get back.

Mistico’s still drawing as a spot show attraction. Nearly 1,000 have been sold two weeks in advance for a Mexicali show featuring him. Tickets are usually bought two days in advance, so the promoter sees this as a very good sign, and a chance that they might fill the building (9,000) and set a Baja California attendence record. (La Cronica.)

Dr. Wagner hung out with the Chivas at their practice yesterday. (La Presna) The futbol ones, not the wrestling ones! Wagner’s apparently a friend of Hector Reynoso, and they jokingly made hair/mask challenges.

Noticias Oaxaca has it’s usual story profiling a guy who had big matches against stars and we have no record of this ever happening so I dunno if we’re just missing the records or what. As usual.

random: You know how odd things stick in your head? “Chamaco Ortiz” was apparently stuck in mine. We thought it might be an alternate Artillero name, but I figured it a better guess when looking around the wiki this morning – Chamaco Ortiz is Hombre Bala/Monsther’s original name. I don’t think Monsther is working unmasked matches at Arena Juba de Reynosa and elsewhere, but I do remember his daughter India Sioux mentioning in an interview that she had a brother who was (about to start) wrestling – could he be Chamaco Ortiz? Seems to fit.

I’m sure someone mentioned this months ago in a magazine and I’m eight months slow on it. (Or I figured out and forget.) Really need to start getting magazines, I think.
