What happened:
“Alberto del Rio El Patron” is introduced in the opening segment to say hi to the crowd. It’s the only segment where the crowd is much visible. He gets about a sentence in before they cut to Kamille Kaine, both speaking in English (with subtitles) and reacting to something Alberto said that must’ve been cut. Kamille calls herself the bigger star in Nacion Lucha Libre. The announcers start talking right after her, definitely not translating, but she seems to be doing a heel manager bringing in foreign talent: MVP, Mesias, Mechawolf, and Apolo are talked up. Alberto tells them off and starts a Mexico chant.
Alberto wears his Dos Caras mask and a Mexico soccer jersey on the way to the ring for half the show. Ricardo Rodriguez is a referee for part of the show and ring announcing for another part. The rudos enter thru the crowd, which is a surprise to the tecnicos and the cameras. MVP fouls Alberto after the referee is taken out. Ricardo Rodriguez stops the referee from counting. Apolo & MVP pull Ricardo to the apron to slap him, and Park & Alberto foul and cradle them. The referee recovers to count three.
Horus is wearing the Rebelion Amarilla gear. Mecha Wolf doesn’t appear to be, though Bestia may be in the previews they showed for next week. The point is they seem to be ignoring that group as a faction for the purpose of this show.
Kamille comes out to watch the women’s match and joins the announcers. The announcers ask her questions periodically thru the match, though they have trouble getting her on microphone. The announcers seem unaware of what is going and ask Kamille if she and Dulce are friends. Kamille distracts Sexy Dulce after a Gori Special, and Thunder Rosa rolls her up for the pin.
The announcers do a stand up in front of the recapping how great the show at the end of the show. There’s no attempt to hide they’re doing this before the show starts. You can see easily see the vendors walking amongst the seated fans. They also seem to talk about the Chavo Guerrero match while hyping what we’ll see out of Alberto for next week. A previous “next week” video package did hype the correct matches.
Thoughts:
Alberto’s match was not what would be considered a good match. It still was amusing to watch, a one-man vanity performance, like the lead face of an old territory. Alberto wrestled this like he turned difficulty all the way down in a video game, easily destroyed all the rudos and going thru near the entire match without selling a thing. It’s only the foul at the end, and that’s only there to set up that sequence, where anything the rudos do can possibly hurt superhero Alberto. The rudos never much get the heat, even with a sneak attack beforehand, barely being set up to get knocked down again. The rudos didn’t look so great even in that. MVP & Park had a woeful sequence. Fantasma doing sequences based off being much faster than the opposition came off as very believable. This was built to put over Alberto as Superman rather than build things up. I think the crowd was still more into LA Park despite it.
The LA Park & Wagner kid do everything in all their matches, so they delivered a crazy match in their Nacion Lucha Libre debut. Everyone doing dives, everyone getting their masks ripped up. They just did a lot of stuff, but the stuff felt like it built well to bigger stuff down the line. LA Park looked a lot sharper here than he did in his Arena Mexico debut. Galeno del Mal similar hasn’t impressed in his AAA interactions but showed some good aggressiveness in this match. The injury bit at the end was weird, and maybe not a bit, but everything else came off really well.
Horus & Bandido was a good way to start a new show. They did eye-catching stuff and got the crowd to care about the match. There were moments, a lot involving rope running moments, where it didn’t feel like Horus & Bandido were working well together but it mostly meant they needed to go a little slower rather than derailing it. I would’ve liked to see them fighting more for a win than a showcase but I think this is what they would’ve wanted for new fans, ending with a big fancy move. This was a bit handicapped by a production crew who has no idea how to keep up with it. They whiff on Bandido’s first dive and catch Horuz’ big one from a bad angle. Something was off with the lights as well.
Dulce Sexy & Thunder Rosa being in the ring together had me nostalgic for Lucha Underground. Or at the least the judicious use of match editing from Lucha Underground. Those two were better than most in a match that had plenty of ugly headscissors. The match settles down a bit after the tecnicas get their comeback, but seems to go a long time just for the sake of doing so. This turned into a salvageable match but not really worth any particular time. Thunder Rosa might have won and Sexy Dulce was involved in the finish, but it this show entirely came off like they were pushing Kamille as the big star
