Infierno en el Ring set for 07/19, Santo surgery

The CMLL press event had the expected amount of news. CMLL Gaceta has the only wrap up I’ve seen, though a lot was mentioned back on Twitter

  • Infierno en el Ring was officially announced for 07/19. That’s a week later than earlier speculation. The ten men in the cage match are the ten men you’d expect: Shocker, Rush, Máximo, Blue Panther, Super Porky, Negro Casas, Averno, Mr. Águila, Rey Escorpión, Rey Bucanero. Averno and Blue Panther were the last to sign (among the people who actually showed up, no Brazo de Plata), both challenging each to another apuesta match should they survive this one. That match would be a one fall submission match with no ropes no ropes break, and is unlikely to actually happen no matter what goes on here. Mr.
  • A 35th Blue Panther Anniversary show will be held on 08/16. The main event is Blue Panther, Atlantis and Negro Casas vs Solar, Negro Navarro and Black Terry. That should be outstanding.
  • Marco Corleone announced his knee injury was not as severe as previously reported, and he’ll be back in August. That’s way ahead of the initial schedule. He also said that any enemy of Rush is an enemy of himself and Maximo.
  • More En Busca de un Idolo shuffling. Shocker and Rush argued about who was running the tecnico team. Mr. Niebla takes over for Terrible with the rudos (just Vangelis.) Like last year, all the participants will come back for a cibernetico after the tournament, on 07/26. There was no mention of any prize for the winner.
  • Taichi starts on 07/26, and the CMLL travels to Japan (REINA, NJPW) were mentioned.

Ray Mendoza Jr. also held a press conference for his show on the 20th. Not much news on that one. There’s CMLL luchadors all over the lineup, but they none appeared at the press conference. Hijo de Pirata Morgan challenged V5 to a hair vs hair match, and V5 said no.

In his weekly Record column, El Hijo del Santo explains he was hurt so much by LA Park’s martinete, he had surgery – to his intestines, because of the pressure the move put on his abdominal region. Riiiiight. This sounds like Santo  previously had surgery scheduled and decided to weave into this match. He’ll be out for 45 days.

AAA sent out an interview with Nino Hamburguesa talking about Sunday’s match in Ecatepec as his TV debut match. It’s not his TV debut match; he wrestled in the opener of the March 3rd San Luis Potosi Sin Limite taping, which eventually aired on Fusion. This Sunday’s match in Ecatepec is also an opener and may also end up on Fusion or not aired at all.

NJPW’s Kizuna Road iPPV is tomorrow morning. It’s starting at 4:30 am Central Time, with the CMLL Tag Team Title match taking place around 6am. I think I’m watching this live.

This week’s Tercera Caida was filmed before a live audience in Arena Queretaro, with the American Wolves and promotes Carlos Maynes. DTU’s 4 show weekend tour starts tonight in that building and will eventually air on TVC Deportes.

Navarros beat Morgans, more CMLL rookie matches

IWRG (THU) 04/14/2011 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), Record (1-3), Record (4)]
1) Centurión & Saruman b Carta Brava Jr. & Vampiro Metálico
2) Dinamic Black, Dragon Fly, Golden Magic b Alan Extreme, Fresero Jr., Imposible
3) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Avisman, Bombero Infernal, El Hijo del Diablo [lumberjack strap]
Bombero Infenral replaced Gringo Loco, and this was suddenly a one fall lumberjack strap match.
4) Negro Navarro, Trauma I, Trauma II b Barba Roja, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan
Navarros dominated the mat portion of the first fall, but the Pirata would rush in and break up their holds. When the Navarros argued, the Piratas attacked from behind and won the fall. Navarros came back at the end of the second fall to take it. Negro & Trauma beat Pirata & Hijo in the third to take it, and that probably sets up another tag title mat

Arena Mexico has Guerreros del Atlantida teaming up to take out a trio of psuedo-outsiders: Goto, Volador & Garza. Semimain includes Rey Bucanero & Mr. Aguila inexplicably teaming. Tonight is also night 3 of the Forjando un Idolo matches, with Dragon Lee/Delta & Metal Blanco/Guerrero Maya. Dragon Lee is nervous and excited for his Forjando un Idolo match.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update.

  • Maricela Pena did a video interview at the annual AAA show for Escuela Antonio Pena. Pretty sure this interview is not pre-empted by a Santo one.
  • Rush says the era of Rey Bucanero is over, and now’s the time of Rush. He wants the hair match to prove it.
  • Ultimo Guerrero explains he was harsh with Escorpion because he’s taught the entire group techniques to win, and he goes out and gets disqualified instead. UG wants good clean competition, how odd.
  • Aerostar says he, Laredo and Octagon haven’t decided which one gets to have the Super Fly mask match, but he wants it.
  • Black Warrior is happy the fans have welcomed him back and wouldn’t mind feuding with Negro Casas.
  • Chica Tormenta thinks this weekend’s DTU show is her biggest opportunity yet, but also hasn’t seen her child since New Year’s Day. That’s rough.
  • Drastick Boy is looking forward to his big match.
  • Martha Villalobos is running a charity show.
  • Blue Demon Jr. (via Luchando Libre) is opening a wrestling school. Like every other school, Negro Navarro & Solar may teach classes.
  • Besides the previously announced PWR date, Hijo de La Park mentions he’s heading to Colorado.
  • Estrellas del Ring chronicle’s Dinastia’s ninth defense of the LJLL title.
  • Porra Fresa previews Monday’s Arena Puebla show.
  • A new R de Rudo podcast is up.

Lineup

CMLL (SUN) 04/17/2011 Arena Coliseo – just the two mystery matches, via Box Y Lucha
1) Freesbe & Principe vs Disturbio & Semental
2) Dragon Lee, Enrique Vera Jr., Hijo del Signo, Hombre Bala Jr., Super Halcon Jr. vs Artillero, Inquisidor, Rayo Tapatío I, Rayo Tapatío II, Súper Comando [cibernetico]

A big match in the Gen11 vs Primera war…not even listed on CMLL’s official poster.

CMLL has simultaneous told these three stories:

  1. The debuts of the Generacion 2011 luchadors and the opening match wrestlers fighting back against them to protect their spots*
  2. The traditional Gran Alternativa tournament
  3. The Forjando Un Idolo tournament

Some wrestlers are only involved in one of the stories, some of the Gen11 guys are involved in all three, but there’s not a shred of continuity shared between the stories. The Rayo Tapatio activities are not mentioned outside the second match on Sundays. The Gran Alterantiva winner has not been treated any special on other shows, but instead immediately shamed in the Forjando tournament. At best, these storylines are operating completely independent of each other; in reality, they’ve worked at cross purposes, causing no one to stick out.

Three** different stories means (at least) three different programmers. All clearly given the same marching orders (push some young people NOW), but also all working on their own ideas and not interested in supporting each other’s concepts. This is a definite change – it’s always seemed to be one voice from CMLL, but there’s clearly a lot of individuals shouting and not much listening. We’ve talked about how CMLL needs to focus more on a smaller group of guys to get them over, but if everyone’s going to got agree which guys to push at the top, and they can’t even agree 0n eight rookies to push somewhere in the middle.

This is really where someone who supervises these people needs to pick the direction and get everyone behind it. If only CMLL had a hall of fame promoter who could do that.

* – that reasoning for the feud hasn’t really been explained well enough, but I’m 100% sure it’s based on real tensions. There’s only so many matches go to around, adding a dozen new guys means the older guys will lose and be a bit bitter about it.

** – maybe four, if you want to count Palacio Negro & Metal Blanco’s run to the trios titles, but that may be someone doubling up.

07/16: TripleMania, Coliseo, IWRG, Monterrey, Neza

cmll/gangs all here

Haven’t seen a news report on TripleMania, but there are still skattered bits from fan reports. I’d lead this off with an TripleMania picture, but there’s apparently 2 in all the land, and you’ve seen them.

Black Terry Jr. says there was a video for Ricky Marvin coming in September, but it’s not clear if this is just him working with the group while in Japan or what. Lita’s band performed after the main event due to time issues. He thinks the Chessman fall sell was more angle than actual death. I seriously looked at the cage photo a dozen times before I figured out that was Chessman taking the bump.

Chessman’s too valuable to the company to be attempting suicide on every major show, they’ve got to put a stop to it – Crazy Boy could do it.

– Skap_fett corrects a couple of finishes (opener, Guapos), lists Super Calo’s real name as Rafael Garcia, runs down the large injury list: Scoria (who wasn’t technically in a match!), Joe Lider, Laredo Kid, Zorro, Chessman, La Parka Jr. – those last two were hurting bad.
Dhani says Black Pearl was with the rudos in the Atomicos match, making it 5 v 4.

AAA TV (SUN) 07/15 Toreo de Cuatro Caminos
1) Alfa, Casandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro b Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata
2) Cuervo & Ozz DRAW Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG]
3) Gran Apache & Super Fly b Laredo Kid & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
4) Super Fly b Super Calo [mask]
5) Fuerza Guerrera b Juventud Guerrera [street]
6) Alberije, El Elegido, Super Porky b Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
7) Head Hunter I, Rikishi, Ron Killings, Sabu b La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, the Animal, Zorro
8) Mesias L Kenzo Suzuki, Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson, X-Pac [cage, hair]

I’m going to wait till Triple A or Super Lucha gives me official results before I do the results post, to save me from edits later. I’m still not sure about the tag title match. It’ll all end up in one place in the end.

An article that got picked up all over the place talks about AAA’s planned expansion in to the US. Not much new; I didn’t know Televisa didn’t want to produce the TV show in 2003. They list Chicago, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and New York as cities where AAA will be going, but I’m not sure if they mean live events or if PPVs will just be available.

CMLL (SUN) 07/22 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Astro Boy & Trueno vs Jeque & Messala
2) Lady Apache, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Hiroka, Seductora
3) Fabian el Gitano, Leono, Tony Rivera vs Nosferatu, Satanico, Virus
4) Felino, Heavy Metal, La Mascara vs Emilio Charles Jr., Hirooki Goto, Okumura
5) Alex Koslov, Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Terrible, Villano III, Villano V
6) Rey Bucanero vs Atlantis [CMLL LH]

I know y’all said you don’t like this card, but I’m thrilled for that main event. Hopefully they’ll get more than 5 minutes this time. And the opener should be fine. It’s tougher defending the stuff in the middle, though building to Amapola/Marcela in a singles match should be fun.

Wagner’s been booked as a tecnico everywhere outside of Arena Mexico. He’s turned on Mistico when he’s teamed with him, but no one else. I think we’ll know if he’s a long term rudo by that finish (so there’s something redeemable about the match – or maybe it’s just build for Dos Caras Jr. versus Terrible for the Heavyweight Championship Of The World! I’m intrigued by the thought of that match too.

indy (SUN) 07/15 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]

4) Fobia, Metalico, Tigre Blanco vs Arkangel, Hooligan, Loco Max
5) Dos Caras Jr., Maximo, Negro Casas vs Damian 666, Halloween, Terrible

IWRG (THU) 07/12 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Tortuguillo Ninja b Akuma
2) Macho II & Puma King b Celestial & Misterio Verde
3) Asesino Negro, Black Terry, Dr. Mortus b Ave Fenix, Kid Tiger, Star Boy

5) el Hijo Del Anibal, Máscara Sagrada, Negro Casas, Negro Navarro b Cien Caras Jr., Enfermero Jr., Hijo de Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

Black Terry attacked Fantasma de la Opera, wanting a shot at the Welterweight title. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot at Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. & Hijo de Cien Caras’s tag titles. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot, got that? Okay, look at this:

IWRG (THU) 07/19 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Misterio Verde & Tortugillo Ninja vs Macho II & Rockero del Diablo
2) Kai, Sasaki, Yamato vs 911, AK47, Fierro [EdM TRIOS]
3) Fantasma de la Opera vs Black Terry [IWRG IC WELTER]
4) Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro, Suicida vs Cyborg, Guardia, Xibalba [IWRG IC TRIOS]
5) Hijo de Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. vs Hijo de Pierroth & Pierroth [IWRG IC TAG]

Pierroth != Negro Navarro. That’s a lot of title matches. Mexico State trios are vacant going into that match. Los Cerebros/Suicida are the Trios champs. Fantasma de la Opera turned tecnico and the Japanese turned rudo since the last time we really got weekly info on this group.

In Guadalajara, Dr. Wagner Jr. did retain the UWA World Heavyweight Championship.

CMLL AZTECA (WED) 07/25 Arena Xalapa Lineup [El Sol de Xalapa]
1) Jaguar, Linterna Verde vs Guerrero del Infierno, Soldado Anonimo
2) Samuray, Gabriel o Gabriela vs Perro Mocho Jr., Rey Garfio Jr.
3) Dark Angel, Luna Magica vs Hiroka, Mima Shimoda
4) La Sombra, Valiente, Stuka Jr. vs Nitro, Dr. X, Skandalo
5) Mistico, Ultimo Guerrero vs Averno, Dr. Wagner Jr. [pi]

That’s going to suck for Mistico. Article is actually more about the people who run the arena talking about how things have improved much lately (since a negative article about the arena.)

In Notimex, Wagner and UG crow about winning the tag team titles. Mask vs Mask challenge, check. Full show recap from Notimex is here.

06/11: Coliseo, VIP, Monterrey, AOL

CMLL (SUN) 06/10 Arena Coliseo [ovaciones, superlucha]

2) Arkangel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Nitro b Fabián el Gitano, Metálico, Tony Rivera
3) Dark Angel, Diana La Cazdora, Luna Magica DQ Amapola, Poly Star, Princesa Sujei
4) Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone DQ Averno, Mephisto, Sangre Azteca
5) Místico, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero b Damián 666, Halloween, Misterioso II

Misterioso II logically replaced Mr. Aguila – I don’t know why CMLL thought Aguila could work both this and Cinco Magnificos show – and Sangre fouled Blue Panther in the semimain. That’d be a fun feud, I wonder if Panther is still a middleweight.

VIP (SAT) 06/09 Roots Magic Club [Alvin @ el Martinete]
1) Cerebro Negro & Dr. Cerebro b Skayde & Turbo
2) Nino X, Super Muenco Jr., Super Nino b Black Heart, La Furia, La Mosca
3) Negro Navarro b Mano Negra and Ojo de Tigre I and Black Terry and El Dandy
4) Axxel, Leon Guerrero, VIP Negro b Coco Rojo, El Hijo de Cien Caras, Máscara Año 2000 Jr.
5) Brazo de Platino, Negro Casas, Super Brazo b Il Barone, LA Park, Olímpico

Negro Navarro wins the 1st stage of the maestro tournament VIP is running. Black Terry was the runner up, which earns him another shot in the five man battle on the next show.

AAA (SUN) 06/10 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [RFC]
1) Euforia (Monterrey) & Mercurio b Panterita del Ring II & Rey Imagen
2) Mascarita Sagrada, Miss Janeth, Picudo b La Hechicera, Mini Histeria, Mosco de la Merced II

That’s CMLL’s Trueno working the weekly AOL show.

(Box Y Lucha Foro) Danger says it was not him who video taped unmasked luchadores backstage with a cell phone. What he really needs right now is someone else to say it wasn’t him.

Magazine
* LUCHAS 2000 #372 has Espectro Jr. deciding if he’ll put up his mask and Mistico winning the LdP.
* Super Luchas #216 has Mistico winning the LdP. Inside, in the last notes column, the magazine notes that AAA isn’t (and shouldn’t) be happy about lineups being leaked. This includes the TripleMania one, which we’re still not sure of – everyone’s only using the original thread as source. I’m thinking the lineup is what AAA has down on paper, but they might not have all the foreign names confirmed at this point.

El Zocalo de Monclova has an interview with (masked) Mascara Ano 2000 and Universo 2000. Things have never been as good as the first couple years of the 90s when Cien had his mask match with Rayo and Mascara beat Anibal for his mask; it’s never like the old days. If this blog goes 50 years (and it won’t), I vow to just write cranky posts about The Old Times Were Better. Universo says he’s talking to two guys about possibly carrying on his name (it has to be two with this crew) – his daughters have no interest in lucha libre and he wouldn’t let them get in the business anyway.

There was also a press conference in Monclova before the first CMLL show there in some time, but the paper doesn’t appear to have results.

El Sol de Tlaxcala has an interview with indy wrestler Astro Aereo. He says he’s been wrestling for 10 years, trained by Tarahumara and is hoping to break into Arena Puebla.

02/04: IWRG, Accion

IWRG (THU) 02/01 Arena Naucalpan
1) Celestial b Extrano
2) Trauma I & Trauma II b Bactiera & Golem
3) Fabian el Gitano, Freelance, Kid Tiger b Black Jaguar, Black Stone, Black Terry
4) Esfinge, Suicida, Volador Jr. DQ Camorra, Nitro, Veneno
5) Negro Navarro DQ Negro Casas

Veneno caused the main event DQ, helping Negro Casas for whatever reason. Nitro fouled Esfinge in semimain. Esfinge is Spanish for Sphinx, by the way. Google Translation is unaware of this.

Only Galavision would run a sports round up show during the Super Bowl.

CMLL: Main event. Exciting highlights of Corleone choking Shocker, and Atlantis putting Wagner in an armbar. Corelone gets Wagner and Bucanero on the superman dive – Atlantis flees rather than get accidentally taken out. Shocker gets in a tope con hilo, Rey’s lifted Wagner’s dive, Wagner does his own dive. Corelone’s about to Black Hammer Shocker to death when Universo walks off, and Corelone throws down Shocker and stares at Universo. Why do they do that? They always do that. Anyway, Corelone is just standing in the ring and doing nothing when he gets a low blow uppercut from behind.

AAA: Mascarita Sagrada, Octagoncito, Mascarita Divina vs Mini Abismo Negro, Jerrito Estrada, Mini Charly Manson from Toluca. Are they showing this one just because it was the end of Sagrada? That seems harsh. I’m just waiting for the spots and – oh no that was awful. Mini Abismo’s on the floor, Sagrada somersault slingshots out for a headscissors, and I don’t know if Mini Abismo is too far away or if Sagrada didn’t get a tight scissors, but he hits Abismo with his back, never really gets his feet locked around Abismo’s head, and goes straight down, landing on the back of his head with no protection. He’s limp at the moment, though Abismo doesn’t know it and falls back while pulling Sagrada on it to sell the missed dive. The ringside people are checking on him immediately, and there’s a clip a moment later where they’re getting his mask off in a panic.

We still haven’t gotten an update on that. I think that means he didn’t die.

What’s airing on Lucha Libre Mexicana:
Angel Blanco Jr., Medico Asesino Jr., Mr. Tempest vs Venum, Suicida (masked), Ninja de Fuego

Thank god for the Death Valley Driver: this is off the tape they’ve got marked as T72, WWO TV from 3/18/96 to 4/14/96. That means we’ve got Tito Santana, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and El Hijo del Santo versus Blue Panther and Samoans next week. I don’t know how I should feel about that.

Mascaraita Sagrada was hurt badly off an impact to the back of his head. According to AAA’s report, he lost consciousness and went into convulsions. He’s hospitalized and apparently conscious and they’re checking for a spinal fracture.

No mystery tag team, unless Juvi & Psi II are a mystery to you. triplea.com does not note any breakup angle.

In the semimain, Abismo tried to throw fire at Elegido, but Oriental bumped him, Elegido pinned him, and Hijo de Tirantes fast counted him.

The Dark Family had some help in the main event, from Head Hunter I and someone they don’t make clear – Espiritu? After the match, Pres. Roldan came out and talked about the AAA/Hell Brothers alliance again.

Super Luchas posted their interview with Nicho, from last week’s magazines. Highlights include
– he was kidnapped for extortion money, and was framed for the non-existent crime by a retired police offer and a newspaper writer.
– WWE let go of him because they couldn’t get a hold of him during that time; they were going to reintroduce him as Psicosis in ECW
– He’s hoping to get another tryout with WWE in 2008, thanks to Rey Misterio
– CMLL stripped him and Familia de Tijuana of the trios titles because CMLL thought they were going to bolt with them (since they’re Mexican Nationals titles, that’s legal and been done.) Nicho wanted to bring his belt home one night to show off to his family, CMLL didn’t like that idea and suspected him of jumping.
– He’s planning to work in CMLL in March, but doesn’t want to be stuck working for one promotion, and will remain an independent. He’s friendly with Konnan and gotten feelers from TNA, but both AAA and TNA would want to control his dates, and that’s not what he wants right now.

5) Nitro, Olímpico, Último Guerrero b Dos Caras Jr., Negro Casas, Negro Navarro

Negro Casas and Negro Navarro couldn’t get along as a team, which is a blatant excuse for a singles match next week. I’m okay with that.

IWRG (THU) 02/01 Arena Naucalpan Results

5) Negro Casas vs Negro Navarro

Accion:

CMLL: Dos Caras Jr., Rey Bucnaero, Mistico vs Terrible, Halloween, Perro Aguayo Jr. – Dos murdered Halloween on the apron sunset flip powerbomb. About as violent as I’ve seen that look. Halloween was stretchered out. Mistico was wearing pink, which is odd. Rey was getting the best of Perro, so Perro just had enough off that and fouled him.

AAA: Super Porky, Gronda, Intocable vs Scorpio Jr., Alan Stone, Zumbido – this is from last taping, with the Oriental injury angle we don’t see. Scorpio’s bleeding as we start the clips, of course. There’s nothing quite like trying to see Intocable and Gronda work a partner whip and hunable to decide who’s actually getting whipped. Looks like every Guapo/Porky match ever, and then Chris and Hator came in to attack after the pin, but we don’t see much of that.
