01/21 Congress Theater Lineup

FMLL

This Sunday, there’s a lucha libre card at the Congress Theatre. I’ve mentioned it before, but in case you’re still unaware

(ongoing thread about it on CPW.)

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to go to a show, so I was actually considering this. The main event is scary – Rayo and Mil are two guys firmly entrenched the ‘living on their reps’ stage of their career. I’m sure there will be plenty of people there who grew up watching them and seeing them in person will take them back to those warm happy memories, but I didn’t, so I’m just left with a bad match. Even still, the undercard could be fun…

…except, as I called when I first mentioned this show, the Bears are playing the same day. It’s not the same time, but the Bears game is pretty much the day. If they win, I want to stick around my TV to find out who they’re playing, and if they lose, I will hate the world and not want to deal with the pain of getting to the Congress Theatre from where I live.

Why aren’t they running on Saturday? They’re running on Friday in LA, so there’s either a show FMLL isn’t mentioning on their site, or they’re just paying Mil and Rayo and the others to hang out for a day. I’m not sure which is better.

I am entertained by them not bothering to announce matches for the undercard. Since they’re no better than half right and don’t mean anything, that’s probably for the best. It’s still too bad they haven’t figured how to announce a start time – that poster lists 6 (bell time?) and AdC’s site goes with 5 (doors open?)

If you check it on Sunday, let me know how it goes.

01/21 Congress Theater Lineup

FMLL (SUN) 01/21 Congress Theater Lineup
4) Lucifer, Aguila del America, Guerrero del Futuro vs SWAT Kat, Rayo Lazzer, El Dorado
5) Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Mil Mascaras vs Canek, el Cobarde

Also listed as appearances: Lupillo, Lancer 2000, Gringo Loco, Coco Negro, Coco Verde, Mascara de Jade, Angel de la Muerte, Sulieta Azul

I have a perverse desire to see that main event, though I’m not sure I could actually pay for it and look myself in the mirror in the morning. Also, that’s the day of the AFC/NFC Conference Championships, so if the Bears actually win a playoff game, no one’s showing up here.

12/06: Coliseo, Diablo, IWRG, AULL

CMLL (TUE) 12/05 Arena Coliseo Results
1) Bracito de Oro, Fantasy DQ Fire, Sombrita
2) Molotov, Starman, Trueno b Caligula, Mesala, Ramstein
3) Amapola, Hiroka, La Nazi b Luna Magica, Marcela, Sahori
4) Misterioso II, Olimpico, Tarzan Boy b La Mascara, Mascara Purpura, Satanico
5) Mistico, Sagrado, Shocker b Damian 666, Halloween, Mr. Aguila

Main event was in straight falls. Fans were divided on who to cheer.

two sides: This week’s Figure Four Daily reports El Hijo del Diablo might have been fibbing to Ovaciones early this week. The short version is Diablo tried to hold up the promoter for more money, didn’t get it, then decided to tank the match instead and accuse the promoter of shorting him.

Various different promoters run shows at Auditioro de Tijuana – they all run on Friday, but basically take turns – and the Diablo/Mistico match was run by Baja Star. Baja Star’s been running events for many years – my records go back to 2002 and they’re running then – so it is hard to believe they’d decide just to cut and run. They’ll be due to run another show in January. If we believe Diablo, they ought to have trouble doing that, because the undercards will be upset about not being paid and the commission would be angry for the same reasons. I think that’s the simplest way of cutting thru the he said/he said stories – if/when Baja Star runs another show, and it goes fine, then Diablo’s clearly making stuff up.

No one else has complained about their pay day, as far as I’ve read.

Ovaciones has a quite a bit of good nuggets today
– Efesto (spelled here Efecto) is Hombre Sin Nombre’s new identity.
– Marco Corelone is returning home to Italy (hahaha) to prepare for his big match on 12/15. Marco calls Universo unprofessional in an interview, and those two will not have wrestled in Arena Mexico since 11/10 (though they did meant in Xalapa and probably other smaller shows.)
– AULL’s TV contract with PCTV has run out, so this weekend’s show will be the last one of the “season.” Not sure if that means they’ll be back on TV in the new year or if WCW’s season finale.
– IWRG has canceled this Thursday’s show, citing poor attendance on recent Thursday shows.. They’ll run the next two Thursdays, and then close for the season.

In El Sol de Tampico, Cibernetico vows to send Muerte back to Puerto Rico and make sure he never returns.

Tinieblas and Mil Mascaras were honored in Puebla for – being Tinieblas and Mil Mascaras. El Sol de Puebla has the general story, and La Quinta Columna also has articles: an interview with Tinieblas and Mil Mascaras correcting a story about his past at the press conference. The man telling Mil’s background said he didn’t go to the Tokyo Olimpicos because he couldn’t put the funds together, while Mil claims it’s because he was ill treated and ill fed and decided to go do anything else.

Updated 02/24 Congress Lineup

Raul Cruz has an updated lineup. Yay Raul.

ELL-MEX (SUN) 02/24 Congress Chicago Lineup
1) Siulenta Azul vs ?
2) Lupillo & Mini Charlie Manson vs Guerrerito del Futuro & Tyme Page
3) SWAT Kat vs Coco Negro [no holds barred]
4) Pantera, Atomo, Principe Unlimted vs Mascara de Jade, Lucifer, ??
5) Mil Mascaras & Mascara Sagrada vs Villano III & Rey Misterio Sr.

Doors open at 6.

Felino is off, due to a Japan tour – that’s the same day as the scheduled NJPW Bangladesh shows and there was some talk about CMLL guys working on those shows, but those shows may be off now, so – I dunno. Could mean any number of things.

The SWAT Kat/Coco Negro follows up the same match from months ago, right? And sorta of the trios from the last run. I kinda would have to be really bored and/or in the city already to go to show. The semimain could be real fun with those tecnicos and other rudos, but I don’t know if it’s a good combo, and if you’re looking for a exciting match, you shouldn’t look at the main event.

Next Congress Show

According to luchafan on CPW (worthwhile read just for the debate about Pantera – maybe it’s one of the Tigres we’re confused with here?), the next Congress show is scheduled for 02/24. I dare not guess what time the show might start – their website hasn’t updated with it yet.

Main is still Mil Mascaras, Mascara Sagrada, Felino vs Pantera, Villano III, Rey Mysterio Sr. (or other some combination). It’s a Friday night and I’m not completely ruling out going because of it, but this’ll be the Mil show (and be billed as “Mil’s last trip to Chicago!”), and last time I saw Mil (in Aurora), he was wrestling exactly how you’d expect a 60+ year old luchador who only needs to live off his name would wrestle. Felino can go and did go when I saw him in Aurora and I think there could be some fun sequences here, but it’s not enough to get me going.

I think the show will draw pretty good, because it’s Mil first show in Congress (I think – nagging suspicion I’m forgetting something) and he’s still a Name, but because I’m a fan of what I’m a fan of, I’d be much more hyped about any random combination of six CMLL undercarders than this.

(this is post 4 on the day, by the way. We may hit six or seven!)
