What happened:

Electrico springboard headscissors

This was a special Father’s Day show, announcing as airing just an hour before it took place.

Cien Caras came in the ring and tried to help his sons in the third fall (though oddly while they were pinning the Munoz boys). Bestia pulled out Tirantes to break up that count, and his sons won cleanly soon after

The lucha libre commissioner stopped the first fall to demand Blue Panther & Felino unmask, until Felino convinced him they had permission. Felino unmasked after winning the first fall. Panther immediately pinned Felino to start the second, but the count was delayed because Tirantes didn’t seem clear it was supposed to be a finish. Panther unmasked between falls and brawled with Felino into the crowd. Panther did the multiple tope spot in the third fall, but was cut off from a third tope by Tirantes blocking his path. That allowed Felino to get in, where he was quickly submitted.

Sugehit challenged Dalys for a title match after their win.

Guapito was the referee for the micro match.

Thoughts:

don’t mess with Microman

The main event fit the special occasion show, feeling like a simple all-star exhibition match until the last couple of minutes. It was solidly worked without having a lot to it until the finish kicked it. It didn’t quite reflect with the crowd wanted to see – Rush and Mistico worked tecnico while being solidly booed – but they kept with their normal match either way. Cien Caras looked like he was hurting just getting to the ring, so the best part of this match was not having him wrestle in it. I’m not sure what was supposed to happen at the finish but I also didn’t put a lot of thought into figuring it out.

The semi-main was the sort of main event trios match after a big singles match, though it wasn’t really following a big singles match. Maybe it was just quicker because the show was going long, but they managed to fit in a lot of impressive Guerrero offense in the short time. Volador looked good in his run, and this was enjoyable while it lasted.

it’s fun playing rudo until you get wiped out

I don’t know what happened with Blue Panther/Felino but it was all sort of a mess. Stopping the first fall to argue about the masks was weird. The second fall lasting only as long as they did because Tirantes couldn’t believe that was actually the finish was weird. Tirantes cutting off Panther from this third dive only for Felino to come in the ring and lose five seconds later was weird. The brawl into the crowd got the crowd back into it, as did the dives, but this wasn’t really all that much. Hechicero really seemed to love the match but it was just odd to me. The idea probably was to honor two of the more famous current CMLL fathers with a singles match but the confusion didn’t really do it.

The women’s cibernetico was in that range of matches which are good though I’m not sure I’d ever need to watch again. It was probably too long – they went 13 minutes before anyone it was easily a couple steps up for the usual CMLL’s matches, with more pace and better offense because of the elimination rules. It felt like they put in more work planning this out than usual trios matches too. Women like Estrellita had better nights than usual, and the crowd bought into the importance of the match. Maligna looked more confident and aggressive in the time she was in. Mystique can do some big spots but iffy on simpler moves and needs a good ruda to work with. Isis having a big run was nice for the occasion; I also just want someone new in the top mix. I guess they could not given when they were going with the result. Sugehit/Dalys is among the best possible CMLL women’s matches they could go and this was a good setup to get there.

these two might have really good matches around 2025

The micros match was not bad, but they’d done much better than that. There were more obvious mix-ups on spots and less exciting big moves than usual. I thought the actual finish had to be a near fall when it happened, because there wasn’t a lot of big Micro Man spots in this match. It was just it. He didn’t mesh as well with Zacarias this time. Micro Angel got better near the end, but he had moments where he didn’t look ready for Arena Mexico. It’s nice to see the Micros again but this wasn’t a must-see match.

The opener was noticeably better than usual openers, so much so that I’m probably overrating it because it was nice not just have the 20 minutes of a CMLL show being a waste. Coyote looked solid throughout and the announcers went crazy for his northern lights suplex at the end. Astral & Eléctrico have figured out how to do spectacular looking spots within the opening match restrictions and pulled them off well. The rudos could’ve done a bit more but otherwise, this was a good show.

you made it this far, you get a Coyote highlight

What happened:

Microman won the first ever Micro cibernetico.

Thoughts:

Guapito headscissors

The main event saw Mistico get a showcase match in front of a crowd who was actually happy to see him, so that’s a difference from usual. The rest was unremarkable, the same as most of the matches on this show. This one went a little shorter than usual and didn’t do anything more than you’d expect for a Tuesday main event.

Semifinal wasn’t much. Titan looked like the best of those involved, but no one seemed that involved. The ending of the match – the rudos seemingly being pinned/submitted in The Star, but then the match continuing because they didn’t submit – was more memorable than most of the match

Microman did two moonsaults and reversed a cradle into a finishing submission, what more could you want out of life. The action was good and moved well, and the crowd was completely excited for Microman winning. We haven’t gotten to see a lot of Chamuel in CMLL. He turned out to be the best base in the bunch, working well with Microman but really working well with everyone they had work with. He’s the one best at taking headscissors for sure. This is easily worth the time.

we don’t even know the mat skills Microman has

The women’s match was not particularly worthwhile. It was a standard match to follow up an apuesta match without the stuff that made the apuesta match slightly interesting. The trios partners didn’t contribute much, and the only thing I got out of this was Princesa Sugehit now gets the entrance after Marcela and is effectively the #1 tecnica.

The second match guys got to do a little more than usual: getting to dives to set up the dives costing them the match is also a bit cruel. The rudos killed my interest with a long uninteresting first fall, but the crowd seemed to get back into it a bit with the latter action.

The opener was the same level of forgettable action that the minis division has been at for a while. Pequeño Violencia was better than usual here, which just meant he was having an OK match instead of being a candidate for one of the worst in the promotion.

(12:37, 1/3, great,  VideosOficialesCMLL)

  1. Negro Casas scorpion (2:30)
  2. Sam Adonis 450 splash (3:19)
  3. Negro Casas casita (6:48)

What happened:

Titan clearing out the side

Dalys seconded Casas. Johnny Idol & Okumura were with Adonis, but the commission said he could only have one. After a bit of stalling, Johnny Idol was sent away. It didn’t really factor into the match, though Dalys and Adonis did have a brief post match skirmish when Adonis attacked Casas while trying to get away. He did come back and get his hair shaved.

Signo & Starman continued to feud. Starman fouled Signo for the DQ in the second, Signo unmasked him in the third. The rudos unmasked Star Jr. as well.

Thoughts:

Casas was taking superplex and dealing missile dropkicks

The main event was a success. The heat was there, the crowd cared far more about this match than anything on this show. It was the action that was more of a surprise, this felt like the best action performance by Adonis in his CMLL run. This wasn’t the hidden flag pole shot, interference match that seemed teased by the build up, but an unexpectedly clean battle. It turned out, at least on this night, they didn’t really need it. The crowd was into every chop, every weird mafia kick block exchange, and stayed with the match the entire way threw. Adonis’ performance (and his post match antics) came off strong enough that I think CMLL could build him up and run something like this again if they wanted to – there absolutely seemed to be more mileage in him. This felt a little shorter than the usual CMLL apuesta match, but it was probably better that way. Casas can go hard for a limited amount of time, and they went just the right time for him. Plus, the sudden casita win was a shocking but memorable way to close it.

The semimain was an alright match after some really boring matches, and nice for that. It still wasn’t NGD at their best, but it had moments of actual excitement before rushing to the finish. It wouldn’t have stood out positively on another show.

The técnicos had some good energy in the fourth match, but they didn’t really have good opponents to work with. Vangellys & Shocker didn’t have much to add, and Niebla’s not exactly carrying this thing by himself. This was not a good match when they put it together and lived up to expectations.

the referee freezing in place really makes it come together as a failure.

The tercera had the usual big run at the end, but it wasn’t that big, didn’t last that long, and didn’t make up for exceedingly mailed in performance prior to it. Everyone was at fault, and no one was trying. Blue Panther Jr. lost Virus on the nudo lagunero (slippery hands) and thought pinning him would just be enough. That was not a correct belief.

Losing his mask has given Signo a little more focus and energy. He’s still not any good and neither was this match. No one besides the two guys in it have much interest in this feud going on, and the brawling wasn’t enough to turn it around.

An ordinary minis match led this show off. This had more effort than the equivalent match on the Christmas Day show, but they weren’t going that hard – Mercurio seemed more interested in what weird stuff he could work into the match. He did a lot of not a lot. Some day, the minis will have a direction and it’ll be mindblowing.

required micros stage dive GIF

CMLL aired the Father’s Day Sunday show without advertising it ahead of time. The Father’s Day show was built around seeing the edecanes; the edecanes dance numbers were removed from the show.

Marco Corleone made his first defense of the CMLL heavyweight title, defeating Terrible.

Princesa Sugehit and Zeuxis continued their feud with no obvious change brought on by Sugehit’s newly announced upcoming WWE appearance. This time, Zeuxis was eliminated, but unmasked Sugehit from the outside to set up the win for Dalys. There’s still no post-match microphone challenges; it seems like the mask match is happening, but they’re not close enough to put a date t it yet.

Gallito & Microman remain undefeated over Zacarias & Mije.

Thoughts:

Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja still getting their teamwork back up to speed

Yes, I am annoyed they aired this show and not the one with Dragon Lee/Cavernario.

The heavyweight title match was the only thing you should spend any real time on here. We may not take the CMLL titles all that seriously, but the people holding them seem to consider them worth upping their games. Maximo had some of the best singles matches of his career when he was heavyweight champion and Marco and Terrible had a strong match in Marco’s first defense. Marco mixed up his offense a bit for the championship match, and Terrible always seems game if he’s in a singles match with someone who wants to do something. They had a few good near falls that got the crowd believing a title change could happen – the neck scissors submission looked good, the roll thru Aero Italia was a smart spot since it’s often a finish – and the fans reacted well despite Marco’s not being a usual favorite of these crowd. (Putting female favorite Marco against tough guys Terrible on Father’s Day probably should’ve backfired loudly.) Some of the punch spots didn’t go as well as usual and I think they can expand on this, but this was fine for a title match.

The micros seemed to have taken the some unfortunate lessons from their previous success. They went for more spots, more time, and ended up with more things not going well and less of the feeling of an actual match. This match seemed like it proved they’d be best showing up once every few months. The remainder of the show was the usual disposal b-show matches, with the distress of Pierroth feeling he could do Rush’s invisible football spot on his own.

  • Carístico, Dragón Lee, Mistico beat Euforia, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero (9:13 [3:14, 2:25, 3:34], 2/3 DQ, good)

What happened:

Gallito taking moderate sized risks

The Micro Estrellas/mascots had their first match, with the one fall match featuring a lot more wrestling and less comedy than expected. The tecnicos won cleanly and lots of money was thrown in.

Euforia unmasked Caristico to end the show. Niebla Roja still wanted to be friends with the tecnicos, but worked more with his teammates than on Tuesday (which may have been a one day Kid’s Day reprieve.)

Thoughts:

Hechicero crushed

This show was really just about the mascot match. It was an crowd (both in the building and on the internets) that really wanted to see the match and would’ve been appreciative of a basic match, and got much more. There was comedy, there was surprising athleticism, and there was comedic athletic spots. (Gallito going up all the way to the third step for a stage dive was impressive and funny.) They said these guys were training with Ultimo Guerrero and maybe he needs to train everyone, Mircoman looked better than most of the guys wrestling in the opening match. These guys had the advantage of obviously having worked out a match ahead of time and rehearsing it, plus a crowd that was going to be forgiving if they didn’t hit everything not quite right, but they also had the not so small disadvantage of being tiny, and they overcame it to have something really entertaining. Everyone should be thrilled how this one went.

There wasn’t much worth paying all that attention to on the rest of the show. The last three trios matches were very much good match formulas, with there just being a little bit less to than semimain for me, but other people might fairly rank them in a different order. They really just needed to do the usual matches to get over with the crowd, with only the tercera feeling like they may have gone a little extra. Putting the Niebla Roja angle aside for the night was the smart move for the main event, giving it a better flow for the night. Peste Negra winning their match was odd, but they can get away with it with that rudo team. Hechicero looked a lot better than in his Angel de Oro match and is back to landing the springboard.

The opening two matches were forgettable. Espíritu Maligno hasn’t made TV in eight months, but still can do his old man senton con giro. Principe Diamante wearing a Captain American design when the other mini to come up to the main roster is also doing the same design is not smart. The crowd was reacting strongly even to that opener, which is may why the second match seemed to play a lot to the crowd and not to the pace of the match.

Mascara is shoving Maximo off him while being pinned

Recapped: 1/1/2017

What happened: Máximo beat Mascara Año 2000 in their hair match. Blue Panther Jr. and Ripper continued to have issues following Friday’s show.

What was good: Nothing. The undercard matches were people who not enthusiastic about being in the show, and their was no miracle in the main event.

Where can I watch it: It aired on CMLL’s YouTube channel. But probably don’t waste your time. Read More
