CMLL FSE #64

CMLL FSE Guerrerros del Ring #64, taped 10/21, aired in the US 11/18

I’m still not sold on “Shocker, lead tecnico besides Mistico”, but at least for this match, he had a small part of his old level. Shocker has been down so long, it seems fairer to compare him to his lows rather than his peak, and he seemed noticeable up from there. He’s also the rare top CMLL guy who seems to be willing to lose clean at any time, which always gets you points. I would hesitate to say he’s consistently okay or totally deserving of his spot based on his current merit, but I have hope and I like hope.

Opener was meaninglessness fun, as opposed to our usual meaningless bore. This show is not a must have, but I wish we got more of them.

It feels like we should be on Leono/Mr. Mexico already, because that’s been going long enough.

Luna Magica is not quite good, which is actually normal. We’re all not very good at things at some point. The troubling thing is she seems to be getting worse, and that has seemed impossible at times.

Main event was upper middle guys just getting by.

Super Comando on TV again! At this point, I think we need to start an internet petition (hopefully with lots of fake names) to get something like Los Romanos vs Rayo Tapatios on TV, because that seems to be the line they have yet to cross. (Well, except for the minis.) Or maybe one of the Romans can just end up with a random fill in duty, which seemed to be what Super Comando was generally doing here. I didn’t hate the tecnico trio, always nice, but I don’t really have any passion.

Leono’s finishing combo is ridiculous. You don’t have to do three different elbow drops, just do one.

Infernales vs High Fliers is good fun. I really wish they’d do the trios title feud, but that would be intersting and we can’t have that sort of thing.

I think CMLL instituted a rule where if you win the Mexican Trios championships, you are not allowed to team up again on TV until you drop it. It does wonders for the belts.

Another anonymous satellite show. There were matches, they occurred, and then they will quickly be forgotten. The FSE show hurts when there’s nothing ongoing, because getting the 3rd and 4th match is not the guarantee of either quality or name value. Women’s match was fine, but there’s been better. (I think Sahori is now ahead of Luna Magica but I’ll keep updating you.) Satanico vs Sombra/Volador/Mascara could’ve been a very interesting match if it the rudo side was the Infernales instead of the Legion, but it was fine.

I don’t feel like doing PBP for AAA, so either I’ll wait a little longer for that or it’ll be a short recap.

If you only see one CMLL women’s trios match this year, please make sure it’s NOT this one. This was awful. This may have been the worst women’s match since they’ve brought back the division. You had some good workers in this one, but it sure fell apart for stretches. It was only seven minutes and clipped to heck, but they would’ve been better suited taking it all out.

The main event wasn’t much better. When the highlight is a “Marco Corelone has lost his ability to leap” bit, you know most of what you should know. This third fall went all to heck too – it was a very unlucky and confusing day.

I totally understand the idea – he’s your friend, you can help him out, and you can help out a kid, a fine plan. Why did I have to watch it though? That’s where it falls apart.

By the end of the main event, Mascara Purpura wasn’t over, Purpura is actually getting booed by the crowd, Emilio’s firmly established as a washed up vet, the match was bad, the crowd was worse, and it didn’t seem like Emilio ever got his really cut. (That he hasn’t appeared since makes me think he got away with a trim.) On every single level, this was a failure.

Opener was fine!
