CMLL FantasticaMania 2016 Day 1: 2016-01-17

This is the show from Kochi Sunpia CHRES, Kochi, Japan, on the first day of the tour.

What happened: Los Ingobernables cheated to beat Atlantis and friends, then took their masks. Zavala & Okumura won a non-title match before their title match, and Volador & Mistico got wins over their rivals in singles mattes on the last day.

What was good: The Jay White/Dragon Lee versus Hechicero/Virus was match of the night, with everything else being close to the cut line, one way or another.

Where can I watch it: It’s on RealHero’s rutube channel. At some point, I’ll figure out how to add to rutube to make it searchable in the database as well.

CMLL FantasticaMania 2016 Day 6: 2016-01-24

senton suicida

Recapped: 01/24/2016

What happened:  In his return to NJPW, Kamaitachi defeated Dragon Lee for the CMLL Super Lightweight Championship. There was no indication of what would be next for the belt or Kamaitachi.

Volador Jr. retained his NWA Welterweight Championship against Mephisto, in a match finishing seconds before the TV Asahi broadcast ended. Mistico beat Ultimo Guerrero via La Mistica and Lyger defeated Virus via campana in the other two singles matches.

Tanaka & Komatsu said farewell to the NJPW crowd following their loss in the opener; they’re announced to start in Mexico next Sunday. Komatsu had one last involvement on the show: after a subtle teasing the last few months, Naito gave Komatsu an Ingobernable hat as if he was a number. Naturally, Naitro immediately turned on him and the Ingobernables laid him out (following winning their own match via foul.)

Mascara Dorada said a brief farwell to NJPW, as he returns to CMLL following this match. He said he’d still like to get a match for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship.

Hirooki Goto attacked Okada after the fifth match. The crowd booed turned on Goto’s for his actions.

The NJPWWorld stream was buffering annoyingly during the show for North American viewers. The show had a special Spanish language feed with CMLL’s Miguel Reducino calling the action.

What was good: Kamaitachi/Dragon Lee was outstanding. There was other good stuff – I liked the Nakamura/Caveranrio/Okada vs Robinson/Titan/Tanahshi tag match the best – but that title match was a cut above.

Where can I watch it:  It’s up on NJPW World for subscribers.

Warning: There’s about 40 GIF in the recap.

CMLL FantasticaMania 2016 Day 5: 2016-01-23

A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS

Recapped: 01/23/2016

What happened: Dragon Lee (quickly) defeated Virus to keep the lightweight championship – but was immediately attacked by Kamaitachi, secretly in Japan all along. Kamaitachi wanted a title shot, and seemed to indicate NJPW had already set it for tomorrow night.

The Panther & Guerrero Maya Jr. also kept their tag team titles over Bobby Z and Okumura. Mephisto beat Volador leading in to their title match.

What was good: f you have your expectations lowered for Virus/Dragon Lee, it’s still good for the time they had. I enjoyed the opener and the main event was not bad, but it’s the Barbaro Cavernario/Nakamura vs Taguchi/Stuka match you need to see.

Where can I watch it: It’s on NJPW World.

CMLL FantasticaMania 2016 Day 4: 2016-01-22

the game of Toss Mistico comes to Japan

Recapped: 01/22/2016

What happened: Mascara Dorada captured the CMLL World Welterweight Championship for a record fourth time, defeating BUSHI when Atlantis helped neutralize Naito. Barbaro Cavernario defeated Titan to hold onto his own Mexican National Welterweight Championship.

Ultimo Guerrero defeated Mistico in the main event to build towards the singles match in two days. Likewise, Virus defeated Dragon Lee before their title match tomorrow.

What was good: I really like Titan/Cavernario, and Dorada/BUSHI and the main event were not far behind. Most of this card was worth watching.

Where can I watch it:  It’s on NJPWWorld. Read More

CMLL roster for 2016 FantasticaMania announced; Los Ingobernables not on the tour

CMLL & NJPW announced the names for the 2016 FantasticaMania tour Monday night. The FantasticaMania tour runs from January 17th to January 24th, six shows in seven days. CMLL luchadors going this year:

  • Mistico, CMLL trios champion
  • Volador Jr., NWA Welterweight and CMLL trios champion
  • Atlantis, Mexican Light Heavyweight champion
  • Guerrero Maya Jr.
  • Dragon Lee, CMLL Super Lightweight champion
  • Stuka Jr.
  • Fuego
  • Mascara Dorada, CMLL Welterweight champion (and on loan to NJPW until the end of this tour)
  • Titan
  • the Panther
  • Mephisto
  • Ultimo Guerrero, NWA Middleweight champion
  • Hechicero
  • Bobby Z
  • Virus
  • Barbaro Cavernario, Mexican Welterweight champion
  • Okumura

Ring announcer Ivan will be on the tour as well. This will be the NJPW debut of Dragon Lee, Guerrero Maya Jr., the Panther, Hechicero, Bobby Z and Virus.

This is an excellent roster for putting together exciting CMLL matches, with some guys I’ve really wanted to see make the trip to Japan but wasn’t sure would make it. The final four from last year’s En Busca de un Idolo – Cavernario, Hechicero, Dragon Lee, and Panther – go to Japan as a group after only Cavernario got the trip last year. Guerrero Maya Jr., who was runner up in En Busca de un Idolo goes anyway; it’s illogical but he deserves it. Stuka, Fuego and Titan have done well in previous trips and Virus should do the same.

Many of the big FantasticaMania matches are usually around title matches. Ultimo may defend against someone. Cavernario/Titan fits. Dragon Lee/Virus as well, though Kamaitachi is already teasing one match against his rival on this tour. A rematch of Dorada/Volador feels like the proper tour ender match, but they could also do something with two luchadors challenging for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles too.

The big news is the omissions. No Ingobernables. No one was really expecting Marco or La Mascara, but Rush & Sombra have been on this tour every year they’ve been healthy and are among the biggest stars of the CMLL crew in NJPW. They’re the only ones who are treated as threats to the NJPW heavyweights. Rush missed last year, so this will be two straight for him. Sombra was supposed to be in the World Tag League, was not. There was recent word going around that Sombra was going to be on this tour and so everything had to be OK with him and CMLL and there was talk of him being the CMLL guy who goes to Japan for a year. Sombra’s not on this tour after all, so he won’t be going to NJPW for a year. Maybe this’ll change when they put up the Puebla lineup for next week, but Sombra’s currently not booked anywhere in Mexico either. There’s definitely something going with Sombra for all these things to be happening.

We know it won’t be Sombra who’s going to NJPW. Who will it be?

Unlikely: Okumura (does not compute), Mistico (better in small dodes), Volador Jr. (CMLL needs him to much), Atlantis (he and Tiger Mask and Lyger could wrestle in trios all year, but nah), Virus (would be great but nah), Ultimo Guerrero (same as Mistico), Mephisto (same), most of the new guys (too new!)

Outside possibilities: Stuka Jr. & Fuego (could do everything Dorada did without being wasted, but seems more likely NJPW would want someone they could build up), Mascara Dorada (just did it, but who knows)

Best candidates: Dragon Lee (is really great, but this is his first time in Japan and is really young, they may want to wait a year to see how he progresses), Titan (is really great, but this may be wishcasting; doesn’t have as a high profile as the other guys), Barbaro Cavernario (is really great, may have to sacrifice a bit of accounting education for wrestling education)

As of November 16, at 11:46 PM, I guess I’d put my money on Cavernario. But not much money, I don’t really know.

CMLL FantasticaMania 2015 Day 1 quick review

Tonight and tomorrow’s’s CMLL FantasticaMania show will be available on NJPW World for subscribers. Two other shows will air weeks from now on SamuraiTV. The first show of the tour is already out, on RealHero’s DailyMotion channel. Quick reviews:

Rey Cometa & Tritón vs Bárbaro Cavernario & Mr. Niebla [OK]: was going OK until Niebla decided to be a klutz and fell on Triton’s knee. Triton really shouldn’t have tried the dive after, but it’s his first match in Japan so of course he would. Cometa got out of the match well and I have no idea how he got hurt. Must’ve been something between the shows. Crowd did like Peste Negra quickly, though some of Niebla’s antics were going over their heads.

Ángel de Oro vs Okumura in a lightning match: [OK] incredible generic lightning Angel de Oro match, CHECK. I’m thinking this one which had to play a lot better to people not used to Angel de Oro, and Angel de Oro actually had to find something new to do around minute 8, but this also might have been better in CMLL because there’s no way they would’ve got 10 minutes. Okumura’s DDT on the apron looked cool and he was trying. Polite applause for a draw was kind of weird.

Jushin Liger & Mistico vs Gedo & Pólvora [ok]: Mistico did very little early and did not look good doing it, but was redeemed in the last couple minutes with some good near falls. Mistico didn’t do much that would cause him to stick out if he wasn’t already Mistico. Polvora really didn’t show much either and Gedo & Lyger were just there to be names. The rudo section really dragged, and only the last few minutes saved it from being below average.

Stigma, Stuka Jr., Tiger Mask vs Mephisto, Shinsuke Nakamura, YOSHI-HASHI: [good] nice trios match to build up Mephsito/Stuka, which came across like a feud that’s been going for some time (and not one just invented for this tour.) Stigma did well, even if stealing Stukita’s pose is no bueno. This felt like Nakamura was fighting much beneath his weight but he also didn’t mail it in.

Captain New Japan, Kushida, Máscara Dorada vs La Sombra, Ryusuke Taguchi, Tetsuya Naito: [good]: kind of want to declare Dorada/Sombra a MOTYC days before it occurs just based on the interactions in this match. They are more than ready for this match and it’s going to be fantastic. This was good too, with both teams mixing well; the Taguchi/Naito/Sombra side worked particularly well. I could use a little less Captain New Japan, but that’s the match they were working.

Atlantis, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Kazuchika Okada, Último Guerrero [good]: best match on the show, with guys going out a little stronger for the main event. Ultimo always steps it for Japan and he was working hard here. Gran Guerrero impressed, working well with Volador after an early stumble and breaking out new offense. It looked like he might be okay with Volador after all; it gave me much more hope for that for sure. Atlantis did Atlantis things, Volador showed off a lot, and Tanahashi & Okada were their normal self. It was weird when Atlantis & Ultimo Guerrero were hyping up their match and I suddenly understood half the things which were being said.
