09/19: AIdC, tonight’s show not on PPV, Panther vs V5

site note: Despite no PPV, there still will be a chat. It may be just all of refreshing SuperLuchas page and talking about refreshing SuperLuchas, but that’s what we’d be doing anyway. The post for the chat will go up around 7 CST, and the chat itself will start at 7:45.

CMLL (THU) 09/18 Arena Isabel de Cuervanca [Dark Atlantis @ el Martinete]
1) Dragon & Platita b Dr. Maldad & Pequeno Leopardo
2) Lady Apache & Marcela b Amapola & Princesa Sujei
3) Máximo, Metalik, Mictlan b Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca, Skandalo
4) Blue Panther, Dr. Wagner Jr., LA Park DQ Mr. Niebla, Texano Jr., Villano V

Park and Wagner couldn’t get along to cost themselves the second fall, but manged to get it together in the second and third. After they took out Texano and Niebla with dives, V5 yanked Panther’s mask for the DQ.

The big news is CMLL’s show being pulled off the PPV. SoloLuchas confirms it on their site, and there’s plenty of message board threads with people calling up to order and being turned down. Even the ad in Ovaciones says “No Sera Transmitido Por Sky”, so I’m thinking it won’t be on PPV.

Advertising the PPV and yanking it is very strange; based on this and the ticket slashing, they’re evidently most concerned with filling up Arena Mexico. The show will be part of the regular broadcast Saturday afternoon.

Best part of this lucha libre history/anniversary preview article? Villano V is angry with Villano I!. See, Villano I helped trained Blue Panther, and V5 thinks V1 taught Panther too much, because thirty years later he’s really hard to beat. V5 says he knew this was a problem way back when he was Rokambole and fighting Panther, but Villano I said it was to force V5 to be even better to one day defeat him.

It’s kinda sad that it took until the Friday of the show for someone to go back and find a story about Villano V and Blue Panther feuding in the past 30 years, instead of just saying acting as if it’s been a 30 year straight rivalry when nothing was going on until they started feuding this year. I’ve gone back and looked, and these two rarely cross paths this decade until this year; the only other stretch was after Villano III lost his mask and turned tecnico, when it was the Villanos teaming up against various rudos looking for revenge.

Blue Panther tells ESTO that he expects Villano V’s shoulder will be fine for tonight’s match. Villano V is hoping one of his brothers can be a second (or a third) along with Perro Jr.

Panther recalls his start in lucha libre to Box Y Lucha. “My first salary was 240 pesos; I became insane, I did not know what to with that money.”

Villano III mourns the demolition of El Toreo.

SuperLuchas has video interviews with both wrestlers. They also point to a YouTube comp of recent famous mask matches.

One who won’t be part of the anniversary show is Shocker, who spends a SoloLuchas interview, who hopes to be back in CMLL ASAP. Sounds like his departure wasn’t his choice. In Box Y Lucha, Shocker says he’s not even sure why he’s in trouble, but he’d like to be out of it. It sounds like the story that’s told a lot when people get dropped by CMLL; the office never tells them they’re done, they just stop calling them and returning phone calls.

India Sioux says she stepped away from the ring due to a broken nose suffered in the cibernetico for the national title (May 2007); she didn’t/could get it fixed, her nose became congested when she’d train, and she couldn’t breath. India wasn’t sure if wrestling was for her, so she took time off to rehab and strength her relationship to her husband. She decided to come back a couple weeks ago, asked CMLL to give her four weeks to get back into shape, and CMLL booked her the next week.

kcidis picks Blue Panther

An AAA lineup for Tijuana lists Cibernetico vs Chessman in a cage match. Note that Mesias is in Cibernetico’s corner. (How do you have seconds in a cage match? You have people who are running in, for sure.) The very next day, with most of the same crew, Chessman is working as a tecnico, teaming with La Parka Jr. So either AAA thinks matches where partners are obviously turning on each other are good main events, or they can’t decide from one day to the next who’s on who’s side.

This week’s Wrestling Observer says Hart Foundation II was supposed to win the tag titles at Verano de Escandalo, but they were instead given to Nicho & Lider due to disciplinary reasons.

If you don’t want to travel to Mexico City, there’s lucha libre in Santo Domingo, DR tonight.

The recap doesn’t exactly list results, but you can put it together based on the pictures.

Legion won the main event cage match with some outside help from X-Pac. Chessman took a big move off a ladder thru a table. Hell Brothers had a valet, but I’m kinda expecting it to be a one time deal.

No Ron Killings in the semimain. I’m not sure that Head Hunter I and Scoria were both supposed to be in the match replacing him, but it effectively worked out that way. Extreme Tiger ran into help his side, and it was very much your usual Mexican Powers match. Shryu Dragon is another indy hardcore wrestler – he fits the Sabu tease without actually costing Sabu money. It looks like Crazy Boy got hurt by the end of this match, and Joe Lider really should be as well. After multiple tables being broken and Extreme Tiger coming off a balcony with a dive, the finish was X-Pac trying to Tombstone Juvy, and Extreme Tiger knocking Juvy on top with a dropkick. Makes you wonder what the point of everything else was.

Super Calo appears to still be wrestling under that name, but as a member of the Guapos. This match was the usual between these sides, and I think Calo picked up the win with a guillotine legdrop (and some help from Alan.) Zorro’s been eating a lot of pins for a guy who seemed to be their new top star.

Tons of dives in the Alas de Oro tournament; that should be interesting to see. Extreme Tiger beat Super Fly to take it.

Oriental won the opener by giving Alfa a German suplex, a reverse of the TripleMania finish and an indication that this will be ongoing. Figure a title match at one of the next two tapings.

8) Kenzo Suzuki L Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson, Mesias, X-Pac [cage, hair]

Air Date
Mex: 07/22 – this was a 5 hour show live, so I still think there’s a possibility they split it.
US: 08/11

The following is cribbing heavily from Medio Tempo‘s report, because they’ve got the only detailed account I’ve seen. I’ve bolded a couple of changes I’ve noticed from early reports. You can read prior TripleMania coverage (live, and day after) elsewhere on this webpage.

Charly Manson exited the cage first, followed by X-Pac. X-Pac and Konnan teamed up to lay out Charly on the outside, and set up a whole bunch of tables. Mesias started to escape, Chessman went after him, and that’s when Chessman took the huge bump off the cage to the tables. This left Kenzo and Cibernetico inside. Mesias tried to help by blowing fire at Cibernetico, but Kenzo got it instead, and that lead to the pin.

Konnan got in a cheap shot on Zorro which lead to the Rikishi pin in the semimain. It sounds like Zorro being stretchered out was storyline (selling the Bonzai Drop) while Parka being stretchered out might or might not have been (landed on his bad shoulder while taking a bump for a Sabu move.)

Sangre Chicana and Octagon did work as seconds in the Guerrera v Guerrera battle. Tirantes was the ref, so you can figure how this went early. Octagon did indeed get tied to the ropes to prevent him from helping, and the comeback started with Pepe Casas coming out to cut him free. Somehow in the battle, Sangre Chicana was locked in ambulance to prevent him from interfering, and Juvi pinned Fuerza with Pepe Casas counting. Fuerza offered a handshake post match, but Juvi refused and walked off with Octagon. Juvi should totally decide to be Octagon Jr. now.

In the notLadder match, Extreme Tiger (second) set up Scoria (second) on a table on the floor and went to the top rope to put him thru, but Ozz shoved Extreme Tiger off, and Tiger hit the floor. The table remained unbroken, so Cuervo set up Lider on the table and did hit his dive thru the table, but Lider and Cuervo were hurt in the process. Crazy Boy overcame took out Escoira and Ozz, winning with a (wait for it) chair assisted flying move to Mexican Powers win the tag titles.

Box Y Lucha?/unmasked Super Calo

The Relevos Incredible matchup ended up being Gran Apache & Laredo Kid vs Super Fly & Super Calo, so it was change of plans. Apache & Calo opted to work it like they were tag partners early on, beating down the Fuerza Aerea duo. Somewhere in here, Laredo Kid missed a dive on Calo, but was all right (relatively.) Like recent AAA tag matches, this was one fall to a finish (not elimination style), so when Apache beat Super Fly, it was over.

The Super Fly vs Super Calo match was held after the ladder match and the Guerreras match. Super Calo was revealed to be Rafael Garcia of DF, 15 year wrestler. They did a bit with Alan Stone consoling him to set up the new alliance.

Alebrije & Cuije beat Scorpio Jr. & Guaptio with planchas to win that match.

Alfa beat Oriental with a Dragon Suplex to win the opener. Oriental was KOed in the process.

Lita performed after the show. Ricky Marvin was announced as coming in September.

cmll/gangs all here

Haven’t seen a news report on TripleMania, but there are still skattered bits from fan reports. I’d lead this off with an TripleMania picture, but there’s apparently 2 in all the land, and you’ve seen them.

Black Terry Jr. says there was a video for Ricky Marvin coming in September, but it’s not clear if this is just him working with the group while in Japan or what. Lita’s band performed after the main event due to time issues. He thinks the Chessman fall sell was more angle than actual death. I seriously looked at the cage photo a dozen times before I figured out that was Chessman taking the bump.

Chessman’s too valuable to the company to be attempting suicide on every major show, they’ve got to put a stop to it – Crazy Boy could do it.

– Skap_fett corrects a couple of finishes (opener, Guapos), lists Super Calo’s real name as Rafael Garcia, runs down the large injury list: Scoria (who wasn’t technically in a match!), Joe Lider, Laredo Kid, Zorro, Chessman, La Parka Jr. – those last two were hurting bad.
Dhani says Black Pearl was with the rudos in the Atomicos match, making it 5 v 4.

AAA TV (SUN) 07/15 Toreo de Cuatro Caminos
1) Alfa, Casandro, Fabi Apache, Mini Abismo Negro b Cinthia Moreno, Octagoncito, Oriental, Pimpinela Escarlata
2) Cuervo & Ozz DRAW Crazy Boy & Joe Lider [AAA TAG]
3) Gran Apache & Super Fly b Laredo Kid & Super Calo [losers advance, pi]
4) Super Fly b Super Calo [mask]
5) Fuerza Guerrera b Juventud Guerrera [street]
6) Alberije, El Elegido, Super Porky b Alan Stone, Scorpio Jr., Zumbido
7) Head Hunter I, Rikishi, Ron Killings, Sabu b La Parka Jr., Latin Lover, the Animal, Zorro
8) Mesias L Kenzo Suzuki, Cibernetico, Chessman, Charly Manson, X-Pac [cage, hair]

I’m going to wait till Triple A or Super Lucha gives me official results before I do the results post, to save me from edits later. I’m still not sure about the tag title match. It’ll all end up in one place in the end.

An article that got picked up all over the place talks about AAA’s planned expansion in to the US. Not much new; I didn’t know Televisa didn’t want to produce the TV show in 2003. They list Chicago, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and New York as cities where AAA will be going, but I’m not sure if they mean live events or if PPVs will just be available.

CMLL (SUN) 07/22 Arena Coliseo [cmll]
1) Astro Boy & Trueno vs Jeque & Messala
2) Lady Apache, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Hiroka, Seductora
3) Fabian el Gitano, Leono, Tony Rivera vs Nosferatu, Satanico, Virus
4) Felino, Heavy Metal, La Mascara vs Emilio Charles Jr., Hirooki Goto, Okumura
5) Alex Koslov, Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Terrible, Villano III, Villano V
6) Rey Bucanero vs Atlantis [CMLL LH]

I know y’all said you don’t like this card, but I’m thrilled for that main event. Hopefully they’ll get more than 5 minutes this time. And the opener should be fine. It’s tougher defending the stuff in the middle, though building to Amapola/Marcela in a singles match should be fun.

Wagner’s been booked as a tecnico everywhere outside of Arena Mexico. He’s turned on Mistico when he’s teamed with him, but no one else. I think we’ll know if he’s a long term rudo by that finish (so there’s something redeemable about the match – or maybe it’s just build for Dos Caras Jr. versus Terrible for the Heavyweight Championship Of The World! I’m intrigued by the thought of that match too.

2) Macho II & Puma King b Celestial & Misterio Verde
3) Asesino Negro, Black Terry, Dr. Mortus b Ave Fenix, Kid Tiger, Star Boy

5) el Hijo Del Anibal, Máscara Sagrada, Negro Casas, Negro Navarro b Cien Caras Jr., Enfermero Jr., Hijo de Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

Black Terry attacked Fantasma de la Opera, wanting a shot at the Welterweight title. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot at Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. & Hijo de Cien Caras’s tag titles. Mascara Sagrada & Negro Navarro want a shot, got that? Okay, look at this:

IWRG (THU) 07/19 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Misterio Verde & Tortugillo Ninja vs Macho II & Rockero del Diablo
2) Kai, Sasaki, Yamato vs 911, AK47, Fierro [EdM TRIOS]
3) Fantasma de la Opera vs Black Terry [IWRG IC WELTER]

5) Hijo de Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. vs Hijo de Pierroth & Pierroth [IWRG IC TAG]

Pierroth != Negro Navarro. That’s a lot of title matches. Mexico State trios are vacant going into that match. Los Cerebros/Suicida are the Trios champs. Fantasma de la Opera turned tecnico and the Japanese turned rudo since the last time we really got weekly info on this group.

In Guadalajara, Dr. Wagner Jr. did retain the UWA World Heavyweight Championship.

CMLL AZTECA (WED) 07/25 Arena Xalapa Lineup [El Sol de Xalapa]
1) Jaguar, Linterna Verde vs Guerrero del Infierno, Soldado Anonimo
2) Samuray, Gabriel o Gabriela vs Perro Mocho Jr., Rey Garfio Jr.

4) La Sombra, Valiente, Stuka Jr. vs Nitro, Dr. X, Skandalo
5) Mistico, Ultimo Guerrero vs Averno, Dr. Wagner Jr. [pi]

That’s going to suck for Mistico. Article is actually more about the people who run the arena talking about how things have improved much lately (since a negative article about the arena.)

In Notimex, Wagner and UG crow about winning the tag team titles. Mask vs Mask challenge, check. Full show recap from Notimex is here.

Odd that AAA posted the TV taping for two weeks from now, and not the results from last night yet. Eh.

Chessman (named spelled wrong on AAA’s site) and Konnan are seconds for the main event. I presume this match means Chessman loses the match the week before. This show is subtitled Gran Tracion. Judging by last year, this means NO ONE TURNS. I dunno.

Interesting to see Juvi still with the Mexican Powers here. That’s about all I got.

They worked an angle off Nicho’s firing. Konnan came oout early in the show, and protested Nicho being fired, seeing as he was an indy wrestler allied with the Legion, not an AAA one, so how could AAA fire him? Konnan vowed to cause chaos until he got a face to face in ring discussion with an AAA offical. Before the semimain, Konnan got that discussion – with Cibernetico, who decided he was good enough. Cibernetico claimed Nicho was irresponsible and a coward, so he ran. On the other hand, Cibernetico was happy Konnan didn’t run, because that would mean Cibernetico could end him for good. Unlike all the foreign guys who Konnan has brought into to end Cibernetico, Cibernetico was going to get the job done on Konnan.

Main event had interference, but the Hell Brothers ended up winning. Zorro won the semimain with a foul on Fuerza (I think), and then Fuerza and Octagon brawled. Ozz pinned Laredo Kid in the atomico, and Laredo had to be stretchered out.

The mystery team in the segunda was – uh, no one. Exciting! Gran Apache beat Oriental, so we might have a mixed tag title defense coming up. After the minis won the opener, Kenzo and Mesias beat them up to set up Konnan’s first bit.

Next:
– 04/15 @ Boca del Rio Veracruz; I’m guessing we don’t get a lineup this week
– 04/20 @ Xalapa
04/27 @ Hidalgo

Bonus:

For the first time I can recall, AAA also posted detailed house show previews on their webpage – they’ve been nondescript listings previously. They don’t actually say much, but…

AAA (FRI) 04/06 Arena Azteca Budokan Lineup
1) Canibal & Kaori vs Takamura & Takuya Lee
2) Kumo & Maxima vs Galactico & Skyderman
3) Mascarita Sagrada & Octagoncito vs Mini Apache & Mini Cibernetico
4) Crazy Boy, Joe Lider, Oriental vs Escoria, Ozz, Scoria
5) Chessman & Cibernetico vs La Parka Jr. & Super Porky

Funny thing is, they’ve already posted the 04/13 lineup here. There’s not much related between the two, except Maxima and Skyderman are apparently feuding.

The other lineup is the 04/03 Feria Internacional del Caballo one. The preview talks about AAA running this building for 20 years, which…no. There’s a math issue there.
