Mexico preview, CMLL press conference notes, Box Y Lucha

CMLL (FRI) 05/22 Arena Mexico
1) Principe Valiente & Trueno vs Ramstein & Semental
2) Dr. X, Hooligan, Skandalo vs Angel Azteca Jr., Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata
3) Pequeno Olimpico vs Pequeno Universo 2000 [lightning]
4) Hijo del Fantasma, La Mascara, Mascara Dorada vs Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca
5) Blue Panther, La Sombra, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
6) Atlantis, Dos Caras Jr., Ultimo Guerrero vs Hector Garza, Mistico, Shocker

Preview of tonight’s card: notimex. If they’re going to do Shocker/Dos anytime soon, next week makes the most sense. Otherwise, they’re marking time until the tournament starts, with some champions versus champions

AAA hasn’t posted full results yet, but has an update saying Alex Koslov won the Cruiserweight Title.

Cesar makes the case that the CMLL Universal Champion is meant to be an (annual?) tournament, and not a belt. (And maybe just that trophy they keep showing in all the pictures.) While that’d be slightly less objectionable than a championship which ought to be defended, it’s still yet another meaningless achievement in a promotion drowning in them, and it still makes absolutely no sense Mistico’s not in the tournament.

Other news notes from CMLL’s press confrence:

– Sangre Azteca, Dragon Rojo Jr., Stuka, and Hijo del Fantasma are headed to Switzerland and Belgium. They’ll be leaving on June 9th and won’t be back until June 14. In Switerzland, they’ll be wrestling as part of a greater art festival. In Belgium, they’ll be performing at the Mexican embassy as part of bicentennial celebration (or really 199th Anniversary, since Mexico doesn’t hit 200 until next year.)

– CMLL announced dates for upcoming major hsows

* CMLL will resume running shows at Arena Coliseo Acapulco on May 27th, and Arena Isabel de Cuernavanca on May 28th (so sticking with their traditional days of Wednesday and Thursday.) No word if these are meant to be weekly events. I thought there was an article last year mentioning Arena Isabel was to be torn down or at least shut down, but I can’t find out. Clearly, that’s not the case, but it’s a building that’s gone unmentioned since last September. CMLL mentions they’ll be regualarly running Tijuana, Leon, Xalapa, Cancun, Zacatecas, Irapuato, and SLP.

* June 2nd will be the next Tuesday Fan Appreciation show. CMLL doesn’t confirm it on their website, but everyone’s still expecting Mini Damian vs Shockercito for that show.

* Arena Coliseo Guadalajara will have a special show on 06/14 to celebrate Father’s Day. No word if Arena Mexico will have it’s own special show on the same day, as that’s about when we’d normally expect their Fan Appreciation day.

* Arena Puebla will have their Fan Appreciation show on June 19.

– Yurijo and Naitro were mentioned as coming in next friday.

– There are no plans for the returns of Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. Rayo’s working IWRG’s Lucha Libre Expo show in July, but I guess this helps the next time he goes to a magazine and teases an impending return to CMLL.

(SuperLuchas, box y lucha, Ovaciones – which doesn’t even mention the new title?, televisa deportes)

Box Y lucha posted a lot of articles from the most recent addition:

Perro Aguayo Jr. explains the three people’s opinions he cares about – Paco Alonso, Dr. Wagner Jr., and Hijo del Santo – because they’re all successful businessmen. Konnan doesn’t make the cut, and Perro’s not interesting in working with him or hearing from him in the magazines. Perro says his promotion is working very hard to compete with two strong companies, and they’re close to signing a TV deals.

Dos Caras Jr. wants Shocker’s hair, since no one’s taken it and Shocker will actually compete (unlike Hector.) Dos explains he’s not doing the body paint anymore, because the first try took 2 hours, and it still was unfinished, plus he feels he has a good body to show off. Shocker says he’s ready for Dos in whatever battle he wants, even a contest of who’s more Guapo after Shocker unmasks him.

Okumura is happy to have Japanese people to team up with again, and plans to help Yujiro and Naito adjust to the Mexican style. Okumura is waiting for a rescheduled date for his New Japan appearance, just like the other guys, and says he, Mistico and Misterioso underwent rigorous medical tests to prove they didn’t have the flu in hopes they’d be allowed to go Japan, but they couldn’t get past Japan’s travel restrictions.

Blue Panther explains wrestlers must work harder in front of small crowd, becuase that’s how crowds get bigger. Also, bigger crowds do not pay close attention.

Dragon Rojo talks about his latest image change; shorter hair among other changes. He went back home during hte flu break.

Sangre Azteca talks about his difficult childhood; parents splitting up, moving in with the grandparents, and hating it.

Pirata Morgan Jr. says Muerte Bucanera is awful, is stealing from his father and cousin, is actually the DTU mascot and not really a wrestler. Pirata Jr. vows to destroy Muerte Bucanera’s gear if they ever cross paths.

CMLL’s health measures to prevent the flu in their arenas. Judging from the last week’s TV, they’re already much less concerned – there were a whole less masks (and gloves) compared to the week before.

Villano III looks at El Faraon.

– A review of The Wrestler mentions never having seen blading in Mexico. They need to pay more attention during Gran Apache matches.

Polaris I obit. Diabetes got him.

The Gladiatores has a whole bunch of video interview: the Guerreras, Martha Villalobos, El Dandy, LA Park, and Los Perros.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update, and Robert on Arena Coliseo Monterrey 10/16 and 10/28/08 and Arena Coliseo Guadalajara 01/13 and 1/20/08

04/01: Maximo gone, GDL, Solidaridad, Monterrey

Maximo’s hair loss to Texano was his farewell: Reforma (via Jazzo) has him leaving CMLL to rejoin the independents. Maximo repeatedly complains CMLL is totally focused on one guy and only that guy, and everyone is unhappy because they don’t get as much, though he doesn’t actually mention this one guy’s name.

He means Mistico, I know. (Maximo also said the same thing on a radio show.) I do wonder at the thought process here – if you annoyed at being a big enough star, you’re going to go to promotions who have little or no TV? That’s what matters in 2009. Maximo seems pretty clear that he’s going independent and not to AAA, but I’m not sure AAA would be looking for his kinda of character right now.

India Sioux hasn’t been on any CMLL card we know of since mid February and nto in Arnea Mexico since December. She could keep working here, but she’s not really working much at all.

CMLL (SUN) 03/29 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [CMLL]
1) Mongol b Milenio
2) Katana & Malefico b Angel del Mal & Infierno [Torneo Tanque Dantes]
3) Palacio Negro & Samurai b Leon Blanco & Thunder Boy [Torneo Tanque Dantes]
4) Boomerang & Gallo b Acertijo & Mr. Trueno [Torneo Tanque Dantes]
5) Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca b Hector Garza, La Sombra, Shocker
6) Averno, Mephisto, Texano Jr. b Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Guerrero

Assuming I’ve got it right, and who really knows anymore, these are the standings going into the final round

Team
7: Boomerang/Meteoro & Gallo
6: Palacio Negro & Samurai
4: Katana & Malefico
3: Leon Blanco & Thunder Boy
2: Acertijo & Rey & Mr. Trueno
2: Angel del Mal & Infierno

The leading team faces Katana & Malefico, who still have something to play for if second place matters. I’m still not sure first place matters. Negro/Samurai face one of the trailing teams,, Angel del Mal & Inferino, which one would presume they will win.

LA Rosa (SUN) 03/29 Arena Solidaridad [RFC & josedjesus]
1) Baby Fox, Sky, Turbina b Guerrero Griego, Neon, Titanik
2) Bella Karina, Galactar, Martha Villalobos, Mini Gato Volador b Linda Star, Mini Hator, Mongol Chino Jr., Sexi Psicsis
3) Diluvio Negro I, Estrella Dorada, Gato Volador b Apolo Estrada, Mongol Chino, Monje Negro Jr.
4) Antifaz del Norte, Olimpico, Scorpio b Diluvio Negro II, Intocable, Zumbido
5) Aventurero, El Hijo Del Santo, Tinieblas jr. DQ Fuerza Guerrera, Hator, Super Parka

Hator took Santo’s mask for the DQ and they talked hair vs mask after. Zumbido replaced Juvi, still out. RFC says 5000 fans.

CMLL (TUE) 03/31 Arena Mexico [ESTO, SuperLuchas, Avellaneda @ box y lucha]
1) Artillero, Inquisidor, Super Comando b Molotov, Sombra de Plata, Trueno
2) Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata, Astro Boy Sensei b Arkangel de la Muerte, Hooligan, Vangelis
3) Shockercito b Fire [hair]
4) Maximo, Mictlan, Shocker b Felino, Heavy Metal Okumura, Mr. Niebla
5) Atlantis, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero b La Sombra, Mistico, Volador Jr.

Shockercito took falls 1 and 3 clean. Rudos challenged for a tag title shot after their main event win; sounds like it’ll be Atlantis/Rey as the team next week for Fan Appreciation day. Sunday’s main event appears to be a Marcela vs Rosa Negra mask versus mask match, which should fill Arena Mexico to the brim.

AAA trumpets Alex Koslov in ROH. (CMLL does not mention half the trips people go on.) Looks like the lucha particpation matches are going to be

04/03
– Generico vs Blue Demon Jr. vs Brent Albright vs Claudio Castagnoli
– Kevin Steen, Jay Briscoe, Magno vs Chris Hero, Eddie Edwards, Incognito
– Bryan Danielson vs Alex Koslov (!)

04/04
– Alex Koslov vs Roderick Strong
– Kevin Steen, El Generico, Jay Briscoe, Magno vs the American Wolves, Chris Hero, Incognito
– Nigel McGuiness, Claudio Castagnoli vs Blue Demon Jr., Brent Albright

Bobby Lee is interviewed about his career. He’s currently commissioner in Leon, and complains Santo cheated to beat him. In a unusual occurrence of links working in tandem, DJ Espectro talks to Bobby Lee Jr., suspected to be the original Ice Cream. DJ Espectro also asks for more visitors leave comments; sometimes, I’ve personally found that’s a better idea in theory than it is in practice.

DTU interviews Chris Hero about coming in.

Lucha libre will be on CSI. Don’t care.

Maska Lucha points out some Dos Caras inspired baseball caps. I still need to get an Artillero one.

LuchaWorld has Robert on AAA’s 07 Pena show, and CMLL 10/27 and 11/03.

AAA (MON) 05/04 Centro Banamex
1) Aerostar, Laredo Kid, Super Fly vs Rio Bravo, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana II
2) Joe Lider & Nicho el Millionario vs Jack Evans & Teddy Hart
3) ? & Vampiro vs Chessman & Extreme Tiger
4) Alex Koslov, Rocky Romero, X-Pac vs Kenzo Suzuki, Silver King, Zorro
5) ?, Charly Manson, Mesias vs Electro Shock, Konnan, Ozz

Looks like status quo is still the way to go. Let’s be honest: I don’t care who the mystery people are.

CMLL (TUE) 03/31 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Hierro vs Skaxy
2) Silueta vs Atenea
3) Idolo vs Depredador
4) Virgo vs Ebola
5) Metal Blanco & Valiente vs Mascara Magica & Satanico
6) Dos Caras Jr., La Mascara, Sagrado vs Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr., Sangre Azteca

CMLL (SUN) 04/05 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara

5) Texano Jr. vs Atlantis [NWA LH]

Fan appreciation show. Big week for Atlantis!

02/25 (notes): Nino de Acero out, Koslov to ROH, Box y Lucha

Nino de Acero will be out for nine months after fracturing his femur on Monday during a dive, which means he’s back in November if things go well. The surgery took six hours. Lucha Libre is brutal.

SuperLuchas says Alex Koslov is part of the Mexican contigent on the ROH Houston shows. That’ll be great and great for him. I hope he still does the stop sign. It also does open the door to mindblowing AAA/ROH crossovers, which we discussed a bunch on the last podcast.

Cavernario Galindo/Box Y Lucha #656
Cavernario Galindo/Box Y Lucha #656

Sexi Star is on the next AAA Circus Circus show, which would seem to preclude her from being Star Fire. Star Fire hasn’t really turned up much, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

No Dark Angel or Cassandro on the last set of TNA tapings.

Ovaciones reports Blue Panther, Shocker, Hector Garza, and Black Warrior will receive Golden Microphone awards from the National Association of Broadcasters. They gave awards to Marco & Atlantis last year, so I think they just like giving awards.

The Gladatores also have interviews with Signo and Scorpio Jr. (as FCW Champion)

Box Y Lucha has articles with Perro Aguayo Jr. growning up as the son of Perro Aguayo, Super Crazy heading to Puerto Rico and Martha Villalobos angry at Mr. Mexico using ‘El Rey’ in Arena Queretaro and losing his mask, since she has a wrestler using the same name (if only there was some sort of government sponsored official group in charge of this sort of thing). The real important news is the awesome return of the old Box Y Lucha covers!

DTU hypes their appearance at the Lucha Libre Expo.

ESPN Deportes looks at UWE 03/01 Arena Neza show.

Ohtani’s Jacket watches Ray Mendoza vs Tatsuma Fujinami from 1978.

12/23: Koslov, IWRG

In case you missed it, there was a post earlier about Ultimo Guerrero, champion of the world

Alex Koslov updated his myspace to talk about his jump to AAA (again)

That’s how I began to feel in CMLL. I’ve wrestled some of the best wrestlers in Mexico. And it was an awesome experience. And I’ve learned a lot.. But doing the same thing over and over gets old. When something gets old for me, I need to make a move. I need to get away from it because it’s not fun anymore. Towards the last several months before my departure from CMLL, I was at that point where I needed to go, I needed to make a change. The passion in me was asleep, the soul in me was not stimulated anymore. And that is exactly the reason of the nature in which I left. It was a way for me to wake up my soul and my passion again. It had to be dramatic and it had to be impactful. I meant to make shockwaves! It was quite an adrenaline rush, and it definitely awoke me! There is people who think I left CMLL for AAA for the money. And it just distrurbs me because these people have no idea. I am a person that acts on emotion. It’s never been about the money. It’s always been about being passionate about what you do and enjoying what you do.

When I speak negative, I speak for my companions in CMLL who I feel are not getting the opportunity they trully deserve, guys like Mesterioso Jr, guys like Efesto, guys like Terrible, guys like Texano Jr.

There’s more about CMLL fans who hate AAA and CMLL being outdated. I wish we were talking about Alex Koslov’s awesome matches in AAA by now. I’m reluctant to disagree with Alex, because I like him and appreciate it when luchadors give their real opinions, but – who are the AAA equivalents of Mistersioso, Ephesto, Terrible, and Texano? There needs to be more opportunities all over the place is all I’m saying.

IWRG (FRI) 12/19 Arena Naucalpan [Al Filo del Ring]
1) Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro b Freelance, Jack, Zatura
2) Hijo del Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. b Scorpio Jr. & Zumbido [IWRG IC TAG]

Dinamitas won clean. This was also the award show, and Oficials won for best trio. Freelance, Referee Reyes Rosas, Black Terry, Zumbido, and the Dinamitas also won awards.

AAA (SAT) 12/20 Deportivo Tlalli, Tlanepantla, EdM [Al Filo del Ring]
3) Coco Loco L Coco Pelos, Payaso Caronna, Payaso Miedo, Payaso Terror, Coco Tiger [mask]
4) Alex Koslov & Mesias b Konnan & Ozz

The Cocos match actually came down to Loco, Pelos, and Tiger left. Pelos dumbly martinete-d Tiger, getting himself DQed and saving Tiger, then Loco beat Pelos. Pelos is Mario Lopez, presumably not the one from Saved By The Bell. Al Filo del Ring is going on vacation for the rest of the year, good for him.

Luchas2000 #451 says Hector Garza is out with a knee injury. This is what passes for CMLL announcing it.

Televisa says WWE RAW will start airing on Canal 5, Monday at 10pm, starting 01/05. They don’t specifically say it’ll stop airing the other times.

LuchaWorld has Robert on GDL 05/27/07 and 06/10 and AAA 05/26/07

A while back I was talking to Dr. Lucha and he noted how AAA is just a two-man promotion right now with Konnan and Mesias.

No, that’s from last May, I swear. There’s also KrisZ‘s news report.

F4Wonline has their AAA recap

CMLL booking change?

Here is the Cesar @ box y lucha post I think everyone was talking about over the weekend, re: Lizmark/Corelone fight and the Lagurenos taking over being as much real as angle. I tend not to believe a lot of what I’m reading on boards right now – the previous unrest plus the jumps gives a lot of space for people to float unsubstantiated rumors – but this does seem pretty solid.

The story goes, Ultimo Guerrero and others (generally from his home region) are angry about the way things have been going in CMLL lately (crowd, people unhappy with how they’re being used or not being used at all) and forced a change in the CMLL booking office. This was mirrored in the big angle on Friday night and also the reason none of that angle made sense given what had been going on previously.

There’s a lot more interesting posts in that thread (at least the first page; not as much as it goes on.) A couple posts down, Cesar mentions the Ultimo Guerrero led faction wants to the company to focus on using CMLL wrestler, rather than putting foreign wrestler and independent guys (Park? Wagner?) on top and not getting anything out of it. I’m sure the jumps were part of this happening; surely people are bitter that they or their friends could’ve had Alex or Shadow’s spot and wouldn’t have left (because they don’t have the safety net of going back to the US.)

Negro Casas is mentioned as one being on the out on the power struggle, which would imply he was one pushing for the international/independent guys. That would also seem to mean to me that he and Rocky are indeed going to be teaming on that NJPW tour, which is totally weird.

Speaking about those jumps: Alex Koslov explains his jump on his mySpace page. Rocky Romero talks about never liking the Grey Shadow gimmick. AAA says DGMex is neither tecnico or rudo. Which means they’re rudo.

CMLL.com updated with subs for Alex Koslov. Valiente is in the semifinal on Tuesday, Volador Jr. is in his place on Friday.

10/12: IWRG, jumps, lineups

IWRG (THU) 10/09 Arena Naucalpan [SuperLuchas #285]
1) King Drako & Nemesis IWRG b Eragon & Miss Gavitoa
2) Freelance, Pegasso Xtreme, Rey Cometa b Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
3) Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. b Head Hunter I, Toscano, el Hijo Del Anibal, Zumbido, Hjio de Pierroth, Latino, Multifacético, Aeroman, Fuerza Guerrera [lumberjack strap match, #1, Rey De Ring]

The main event turned out to be a lumber jack strap match with eliminations in the ring and the winner facing Scorpio Jr. at some point in the future for his title. Because of the strapping, the wrestlers were more concerned with staying in the ring than winning the actual match. The indy Fuerza Aerea beat the Oficials, setting up a title match for next week.

SuperLuchas also has a big interview with Romero and Koslov abut their jumps, which is very much worth reading in it’s entirety. Romero says he was brought in to CMLL to be what amounts to be a Mistico clone (they didn’t expect him to be that over, but that’s the kind of character CMLL wanted; what does it say that CMLL felt they need to go out of the company to get this sort of character?) Once it didn’t work out, they really didn’t have any plans for him. Romero is still under the belief it’ll be Negro Casas and him teaming in NJPW, a historic CMLL/AAA team up.

Alex says jumping to AAA was the toughest decision of his career – CMLL gave him a big opportunity but they had stopped giving him anything to do and he felt like he was dying as a wrestler. (It’s funny, there’s an ESTO article which notes Alex just told them last week he wanted to win the CMLL Middleweight Title; if he actually had an opportunity to do that or something like that, I think he would’ve have jumped.) Alex had been considering going back to the US, but thinks AAA will give him more chance to grow. You only get one lifetime, so Alex didn’t want to waste it. He thanks Paco Alonso, while noting Alonso isn’t very happy with him right now. Alex says a lot of their former colleagues understand why he and Rocky did what they did.

In a Notimex article, Ultimo Guerrero explains he and others couldn’t take the Villanos beating up Panther, so they decided to do something. (So did the fans.) They’re calling the group Ola Lagunera for the moment and are inviting rudos and tecnicos to join in their war against the Villanos. Besides the guys who were together on Friday, Euforia, Misterioso II, Stuka and Dr. Wagner Jr. are mentioned as possible other members. Ultimo Guerrero admits he has no idea where this leaves him, Atlantis and the rest of the Guerreros, and they’ll have to talk about it. Skip down to the lineups for more on that. The last paragraph quotes Mephisto when they mean Ephesto, though it points out the Triad of Terror ought to be dead once more, since the Villanos and the Perros are allies.

More from Rey Misterio Jr., who must’ve had a phone conference to promote the tour he’s not even on. Rey wants to do a movie, thinks AAA and CMLL must continue to surprise and motivate the fans if they want to draw, and plans to retire…in 8 or 10 years. And that’s just from the WWE, he plans on touring Mexico (and the world) as an indepedent after that.

Accion had highlights of the CMLL main event but didn’t show a second of the post match angle. AAA was the Pachuca main event (in other words, Jack takes crazy bumps for Parka and Ciber.) Parka got Jack with an electric chair superplex, pinned him, Piero only had time to count one before Parka got up off the pin, adjusted his mask, and covered again for the three. Very odd.

ESTO talks to Dragon Rojo Jr. (the wrestler) and Dragon Rojo Jr. (the voice in the movie)

El Manana profiles Cassandro, listing the (unnamed) CHIKARA Lightweight Title as one of his biggest wins.

Blue Panther talks about the mask match and the aftermath; he thought he had that match won.

Martha Villalobos and her wrestlers are collecting canned food for hurricane relief.

Looks like all the AAA wrestlers are now off the next DTU card.

Luchaworld has KrisZ’s newest news update

CMLL (SUN) 10/19 Arena Coliseo
1) Sombra de Plata & Trueno vs Artillero & Súper Comando
2) Dark Angel, Goddess, Princesa Blanca vs La Seductora, Mima Shimoda, Princesa Sujei

4) La Máscara, La Sombra, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Satánico, Terrible
5) Blue Panther, Héctor Garza, LA Park vs Rey Bucanero, Villano IV, Villano V

Rey teaming with the Villanos is interesting with Ultimo Guerrero on the other side of the war, but then when you recall the Guerreros and the Perros aren’t supposed to be getting along previously, it just seems like someone’s not paying attention when booking. Panther teaming with two Monterrey guys would be another clue.

Starman in the tercera = obvious Alex Koslov stand in. Alex is still listed Tuesday and Friday. CMLL has not bothered to update their lineups, 48 hours after the jump.

IWRG (SUN) 10/19 Arena Naucalpan
1) Super Halcon Jr. vs Carta Brava
2) Eragon & Jack vs Furia Guerrera & King Drako

5) Latino & Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Head Hunter I & Veneno

This is the TV Azteca taping. The Scorpio show with Santo in the main event is for TV C Deportes. Not sure that’s the way I’d do things, unless I’d given up on the TV Azteca deal.
