Abismo Negro (1971-2009)

A very brief story on noroeste says Abismo Negro has passed away. LMDLL’s RFC is also reporting his death, which is enough to cause me to believe it (though there’s a small hope this may be a hoax.) Edit: RFC found another person who’d confirm it. That’s the end of the hope.

The complete noroeste story:

El luchador profesional, Abismo Negro, murió esta madrugada en el municipio de El Rosario al parecer ahogado en el río. Su cuerpo fue encontrado esta tarde. Al parecer el luchador iba con rumbo a la Ciudad de México cuando decidió bajarse en este municipio; las autoridades ya investigan el hecho.

Translated:

The professional wrestler, Abyss Black, died this morning in the town of El Rosario allegedly drowned in the river. His body was found this afternoon. Apparently the fighter was heading to Mexico City when he decided to stop in this town, the authorities are already investigating the incident.

The last time we heard about Abismo Negro, is when he didn’t make the show Friday night in Madero. This would’ve been Sunday morning. Abismo certainly had his personal issues take over his life the last few years, though we have no idea if this has anything to do with those.

Abismo Negro was one of only three remaining wrestlers in the company who were on the debut show in May of 1992. (Octagon and Jerrito Estrada are the others, and Pepe Casas and Tirantes were two of the referees on that show.) Abismo was debuting as Winners at that point, and is a rare wrestler who’s succeeded under two different gimmicks; it’ll may only now be publicly acknowledged Winners became Abismo.

The Abismo Negro gimmick is as identifiably a part of AAA as any. A lot of that is owed to Antonio Pena’s design, but a significant credit must go to man under the mask, who made the character larger than life. Abismo was a top rudo for AAA at many points during his run, so much so that he gained fan following (which caused at least one ill advised tecnico turn) and cross over work on other Televisa shows.

The mask of Abismo Negro is a symbol of AAA. It’s already scheduled to live on as part of the anime later this year, and the video game for next year. Abismo was scheduled to be a big part of the US Tour the next two weeks. I don’t know what they can do with that gimmick now – I think Black Abyss has to disappear for a while (and probably come back as something else), and I think no one can appear as Abismo Negro for a good long time, but I don’t what we’ll think about all this in two weeks. The Abismo Negro name will never go away thanks to those who worked to make it mean something, but I don’t think even the open minded AAA fans would accept anyone else under that mask maybe for years to come.

Edit: 907am – Noroeste has updated it’s story with details of Abismo’s death. In usual Mexican newspaper fashion, this article includes a picture of Abismo’s body, as they found it.

It sounds as though (for whatever reason), Abismo Negro had a panic attack on a bus,  ordered the bus driver to stop near the river, sent a text message to his wife that he was lost in the mountain, and walked in. The theory is he got knocked out by a waterfall and drowned from there.

Let me see if I can get this straight: Abismo is believed to have had a panic attack, ordered the driver to stop (driver later reported the incident to the authorities, which caused the search for him), wandered off, text messages his wife that he was lost in the mountain, and was found in the river.

4) La Máscara, Máximo, Volador Jr. b Averno, Skandalo, Terrible
5) Blue Panther, Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone b Black Warrior, Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero

Warrior replaced Lizmark Jr. Skandalo replaced Heavy Metal. I am shocked these people did not show. Anyway, we ended up with Lagunero on Lagunero in the main event, which seems like it was mostly ignored. Dos got Niebla clean with a press and a powerbomb. Niebla wants a title shot. Maybe he should’ve won then.

After the tercera, the Infernales challenged for a tag title match. Amapola beat Angel with a hand on the ropes.

4) La Sombra & Metalik b Olímpico & Último Guerrero [Torneo Corona, final]

They worked the main event as a rematch of the torneo end. Rudos took the first, tecnicos took the second and the third with stereo ‘ranas. Cibernetico came down to Valiente vs Misterioso, and Misterioso was so upset about losing, he put his Occidente Light Heavyweight title on the line next week versus Valiente. Whoever is booking here is awesome; I don’t even care who wins that match, I just need to see it.

6) Arlequin L Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., Fantasma de la Ópera, Multifacético, el Hijo Del Anibal, Hijo del Cien Caras, Ultramán Jr., Jack, Pendulo, el Hijo del Pierroth [mask, cage]

Order of Escape:
– Pendulo
– Ultraman Jr.
– Jack
– Mulitacetico
– Fantasma de la opera
– Hijo de Anibal
– Cien Caras Jr. (accidentally leaving his cousin behind)
– Arlequin

Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. was pretty well dead from chairshots at this point, so just as Hijo de Pierroth was leaving the cage to win, Arlequin came back in to steal the win for himself. Arlequin pinned MA2K Jr. for a three count, except you can’t win by three counts in IWRG. Mascara recovered to plancha Arlequin, but Arlequin counter him. Mascara recoved to go up agian, Arlequin was all ready to counter him again, and Mascara just climbed out for a win. If I was Arlequin and I lost like that, you’d never see me again.

Arlequin is Manuel Mejia, from Mexico City, 20 years a wrestler. That name doesn’t turn up anything in the wiki, but he’s certainly been around here as someone else.

Fuerza got away with a foul on Terry, and they did a mask/hair challenge after.

SuperLuchas writes about the Hulk DVD special show at Arena Mexico Thursday. Sombra/Euforia should be quite fun. Look at this week, if you will:

3) Esther Moreno, Linda Star, Martha Villalobos vs Ayako Hamada, Lady Warrior, Mujer Demente
4) Abismo Negro & Intocable vs Damián 666 & Mr. Águila

Yes, that’s the original Abismo Negro, attempting to work under that name as an indy. You wouldn’t think AAA would go for that, but there’s Intocable working as Intocable. And across the ring – if the Perros are leaving on good terms, why are they leaving before the new promotion is running? Working these dates can’t do much for them. Is Ayako out of AAA? That’d be a shame. I don’t think that Mini Zumbido is Freelance, but who knows.

So they did team up at least once! Never mind then. Scorpio Jr. made an appearance to mention his benefit show here on 10/17, and to take photos with Shocker and Zumbido to tease them as a new/old trio.

2) Joe Lider & Nicho el Millionario b Extreme Tiger & Psicosis II and Arandu & TJ Boy [AAA TAG, ladder]
4) Cibernetico b Chessman [cage]

Kenzo attacked Cibernetico, Mesias attacked Chessman, Mesias did a better job of it.

Psicosis replaced Halloween, who’s out with an injured ankle, though there’s a rumor Halloween may be done in AAA. This would also seem to confirm TJ Extreme is done here, because he otherwise would’ve been the logical replacement. Extreme Tiger climbed up the ladder (this wasn’t originally listed as a ladder match but apparently ended up being one), Tiger had a chance to grab the belts, but opted to dive off the ladder instead. Lider ended up powerbombing him and, according to this, pinned him for the win. In a ladder match. I don’t know!

4) Incógnito b Danger
5) Black Terry b Negro Navarro and Solar I and Shu el Guerrero
6) Blue Demon Jr. DQ El Dandy
7) Juvi, Mil Mascaras, Tarzan Boy b Antifaz, Hator, Head Hunter I

In the main event, Mil Mascaras had Head Hunter I beat but the other rudos distracted the referee, and Head Hunter II returned to attack Mil and take his brother’s place. One brother subbing for another during a match, can you imagine such a thing? Anyway, it’s Mil so he still won.

Dandy gave Demon a martinete and was shocked to be DQed. Piledrivers are not DQs by NWA rules, Dandy pointed out. He may have something there. Demon was strechered out.

Super Muneco knocked himself out on a bump to the floor, which cause them to retighten the ropes and adjust the mats. Everyone says Black Thunder has a dive which will certainly get him killed. Sounds fun. Turbo got new gear.

Attendance is estimated at 600, up from the first show.

LuchaWorld has Robert on IWRG 03/23/06, AAA TV 03/31/06 and CMLL TV 04/01/06 and KrisZ’s news update.

Of all the lucha coverage, Accion spent the most time on a video package marking the second anniversary of Antonio Pena’s death. CMLL main event was shown (Atlatnis looked like an older man than Panther, and Panther doesn’t have a mask) as was AAA’s Cibernetico vs Mesias vs Chessman match (no finish was evident here; Chessman seems to have new gear, which probably could be improved upon.) No WWE clips.

Sombra replaced Alex. Good to see Valiente is alive.

Goddess snuck a pinfall on Sujei in the first fall, then took it in two after excssive violence. After the match, Goddess and Sujei agreed to a mask match. No date has been specified but ESTO guesses 10/13. You know, I’m pretty sure Sujei’s going to win, and wouldn’t be surprised if Goddess did end up being dropped by CMLL and returning to Canada. However, Sujei’s comments about this feud doens’t do her any favor – either she beats a joke and who cares, or she loses to a joke and looks bad. El Hijo del Santo made this point last week, you’re only as good as the people you beat so ripping your opponents is ripping yourself.

That said, Goddess noting her special ability to demask Canadians is hilarious.

Ovaciones notes Dragon Rojo Jr. in Los Campeones de la Lucha Libre (Notimex writes about the plot) and Tony vs Loco for this Sunday. That reminds me, we need an updated card for Sunday:

CMLL (SUN) 10/05 Arena Coliseo

OFF: Halcon Negro, Satanico, La Sombra
ON: Arkangel, Hooligan, Sagrado

Dr. Wagner Jr. has better thing to do then be Blue Panther’s backup against the Villanos. Dr. Wagner = kind of a jerk.

Lizmark Jr. wants Marco Corelone’s hair.

Juarez may be closing Gimnasio Neri Santos, the local lucha libre arena.

Someone named Abismo Negro is wrestling tonight in Aguacalientes tonight. Then again, they’ve got X-Pac as a rudo so who knows how old this lineup is.

Tiffany is listed as working this Saturday. Then again, again!, they list Charly Manson this weekend, and that’s wrong. Also, no building for that show. Just somewhere, someplace in Mexico City, there will be Crazy Boy. Be on the lookout.

SoloLuchas writes a profile of Bestia Magnificia, talks about the Morenos as mixed tag champs and gives away tickets to the NWA Mexico show. They’re not the only one, though these are only 5 tickets per site – just enough to get some press for the show.

Wagnermania has Marco/Dos/Mascara vs Pesta Negra and Panther vs Perros. Rey-Del-Martinete @ El Martiente has the ladder/tag title match from Verano de Escandalo. I need to start linking to Lover-Ice’s stuff.

This is the Signo tribute show, and pretty well shuffled from what was originally announced. There were matches before these, but no results and they didn’t match original listings. Later in the thread, someone mentions India Sioux appeared but didn’t wrestle due to a (broken?) nose operation.

CMLL (SUN) 07/01 Arena Coliseo [ova]

4) Alex Koslov, Heavy Metal, Volador Jr. b Atlantis, Olimpico, Sangre Azteca
5) Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone, Rey Bucanero b Toscano, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000

Dos pinned Universo clean in the main event, which does set up a title match next week. I’m far less believing of a title change than Bihari. I can’t believe Universo will actually lose this title til five minutes after it happens. (I can’t believe Universo still has the phyiscal belt either, so maybe I’m just a skeptic. Or maybe there will be panicked cleaning at the ranch this week.)

Fantasy replaced Shockercito in the minis match, which was bumped up to tercera.

Bam Bam is the only constant on the tecnico side, though Olimpico and Dragoncito are showing up twice.

About five months late, CMLL tickets are on TicketMaster. (Assist to Wagner_Driver @ box y lucha.) Only for this Friday’s show. It looks like they’re not offering all the seats – the cheapest seats don’t appear to be listed.

AAA’s upcoming cards list Abismo Negro on a 07/28 show. Typo?

Zocalo.com.mx has a really good interview with Nicho, about his life in wrestling. He talks about WWE a bit, but also about the start of his career – Pena gave him the Psicosis name, but the gear actually came from a friend who didn’t get picked up by AAA and so couldn’t use it, and it just happened to work out beautifully.

Both Box Y Lucha 2825 and Super Luchas 219 have Chris Benoit on the cover. ByL teases Big Show in Mexico, which I would presume to be the TripleMania rumor.

Sicodelico Jr. moved onto the second round in the NWA World Heavyweight Championship tournament, beating Roughneck Ryan. He moves onto the quarterfinals to face Claudio Castignoli. Logically enough, that match will take place at a CHIKARA show on 07/21 in Wallingford, CT.

Before that match, Sicodelico Jr. will team with Incognito in a triangle match for the NWA World Tag Team Titles. The other two teams are Billy Kidman & X-Pac and Joey Ryan & Karl Anderson (who would seem to be the safe bet.)

5) El Mesias, Kenzo Suzuki, Ozz b Chessman, Cibernetico, La Parka Jr.

Air Date
Mex: 06/17
US: 07/07

Tecnico team up in the main event failed, but that was due to a lot of run-ins. After the match, Cibernetico challenged Mesias to a hair match at TripleMania. That card floating around has a six man tag with those two and hair on the line, so this fits that lineup but doesn’t confirm it.

Latin did win the seminfinal, small package on Scorpio, but was laid out by the Legion/Sect after the match. They also did a bit with the local promoter defending the honor of Merida to Konnan. Super Calo replaced Abismo Negro in the match. AAA’s been good about mentioning injuries of late, so I don’t think that’s the problem with Abismo. I think they’d also pull him from lineups if it was a suspension with a known end date, so that leaves – contract issue? He really should’ve been here to keep the feud with Latin going, and that he’s not means it’s serious.

Juvi was hurt going into the tercera and probably didn’t actively particpate. It turned into a hardcore match, and both Lider and Tiger ended being hurt during the course of the match.

Fabi Apache got the foreign women disqualified – I’m assuming that’s Tiana Ringer being given a Sarah Stock-like gimmick until told otherwise – for interference. So of course, Nemesis did not get the tecnicos DQed for doing the same thing a match later. Welcome to AAA.
