Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

  1. tecnicos
  2. rudos
  3. rudos

Winner: rudos (2-1)
Match Time: 7:29
Rating: first fall finish was fun, less so when it's a show of short finishes
Notes:

Terror Chino and Pompin are your refs. Atlantis has a very generic looking blue top on today, that doesn't actually match the rest of his gear. We get a clip of Toscano getting hurt to remind us that this his first match since March 20th. Atlantis and Panther evade each other in the ring for a bit to standoff. Take two, leads to a nice over headscissors by Atlantis, holding it on to the mat. Panther bridges up to escape a pinfall, and to swing around back and forth to a headstand. Panther holds it, with no hands for a bit, but he doesn't seem to be escaping. Panther is able to turn and get free, stretching Atlantis legs in revenge. Atlantis take him by the armbar and pull him up into armbar, then goes behind for an over the shoulder bit. Both let go , up to their feet, monkey flip but Panther lands on his feet, as down Atlantis, and grabs a hold of his legs and arms – nudo lagunero! HE WON THE FIRST FALL ON MAT WORK! I don't think I've ever seen that. Atlantis gave up super quick, and his rudo partners were too slow to break it up. Tecnicos celebrate with Blue Panther, who seems surprised it worked that quick. Panther's partners are very proud of him, and so they should be.

2: Blue Panther and Toscano discuss who should start, but I guess they want to make sure Toscano actually wrestles this time. Toscano is wearing small trunks. Crowd chants for Mr. Niebla against him. Chest slap fight. Toscano off the ropes, and Niebla knocks him down with a jumping reverse tope. Dive fake, Niebla kicks Toscano down, off the ropes, thru the ropes senton con giro! We're in a hurry, huh? Sombra in with a springboard sunset flip on Warrior, Warrior rolls free, rolls away, and knocks Sombra down with a clothesline. Warrior stops to look around, which is dramatic pause in this match. Sombra opts to charge, gets backdrop to the apron, miss a swinging, and Warrior kicks him to his knees. 619, TOPE. Panther and Atlantis in, but Panther stops to look outside at the carnage. Panther walks directly into the Atlantida, and that's over. Okay, that wasn't as cool as the first time. Replays, and a break.

3: Toscano rushes Niebla and knocks him over with a shoulderblock as we're still looking at the card girl. Toscano off the ropes, and Niebla knocks him down with a clothesline before staring up his dance. Chop, Niebla pauses to stoke the Niebla chant. After a crowd shot, Panther is suddenly chopping Warrior in the ring. Fine editing! Warrior comes back randomly, kicks, Panther and sends him into the corner, charges, and get tossed into the buckle. Warrior dramatically readjusts his head, then run into multiple armdrags. Panther holds on for an armbar, and Niebla kicks him in the back of the head to break it up. Niebla smacks Panther around, but Panther uses Warrior and Niebla's wrists for kip ups, ducks their double clothesline, and gives them a double faceslam when their hands are down too soon. Toscano plancha on both, Atlantis grabs Toscano and ends up getting chopped, and Toscano lead the two standing into a missile dropkick from Sombra. Sombra and Toscano high ten, Toscano tease a dive, but just stops, kinda poses away from the ropes, then goes back to and does a pescado anyway. Peculiar. Warrior and Niebla catch him, but get knocked down by Sombra's tope con giro. Captains back in one more time, and point around to the crowd before going at it. Panther knocks down Atlantis with a plancha and lands on top, one two no. Atlantis bodyscissors cradle, one two no. Panther rallies the crowd. Atlantis 'rana, Panther rolls thru one two NO. Everyone else has made it back to their corner by now. Atlantis misses a clothesline, but back with a headscissors. Panther goes out, Atlantis to follow – tope. Toscano miss a corner charge on Warrior, gets slapped by Niebla, and Warrior pulls him over into position for a Niebla top rope splash. Sombra springboards in for the save, but Warrior kills him with a dropkick. Warrior covers, one two three, and Toscano eats the Niebla. Thanks for coming back, here's your loss. That's the match.

Tournament brackets! They mention each first round match.

Match 2: Hector Garza vs Mephisto in a eightfinal match for the CMLL Universal Championship
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

Winner: Hector Garza
Match Time: 2:26
Rating: least of the 7
Notes:Ref is Pompin.

Circle. Why circle, you have no time. Mephisto flips Garza over his hip, but Garza armdrags him away. Mephisto trips up Garza, and feeds him self into the mat headscissors. Zero leg covers, standoff. Mephisto takes off his shirt and poses. Not Garza. Atlantis shoulderblock, off the ropes, under, stop sign, We have to wait for Garza to get his shirt over. The match is almost half over, you know. This time, Mephisto kicks the shirt away, Garza reaches to pick it up, and Mephisto dropkicks him out. Mephisto the apron? Mephisto Asai Moonsault! That wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing thing ever, but it got the job done. Replay. Clip, to Garza covering Mephisto in the ring. Why do they rejoin on a pinfall where Garza gives up covering before two? Corner whip ends up with Mephisto flipped to the apron and Garza knocked away. Mephisto climbs up, Garza join him, grabs a hold, and gives him an over head belly to belly superplex. One two three.

Match 3: Mistico vs Ephesto in a eightfinal match for the CMLL Universal Championship
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

Winner: Mistico
Match Time: 2:55
Rating: good
Notes: Pompin stays as ref. Místico looks for cheers, and gets kicked down by Ephesto. Pompin is already getting messages on his ear piece, that's not a good sign. Ephesto chops Místico around. Clip? Místico slide out on a whip, and Ephesto takes him out with a tope. Replay. Ephesto crawls in, and Místico is slow, grabbing his right arm. Is he checking his bicep? Místico up on the apron, and the crowd is chanting for again. Ephesto tries to punch, but Místico blocks him and hits him with a swing kick. Spinning headscissors sends Ephesto out, and Místico charges – tope, Místico landing and then driving them both into the front row. That was a little something extra at the end. Replay. Místico in first and posing on the middle buckle. Ephesto gets a clear path in, and tries to attack Místico, but Místico flips away, charge Ephesto in the corner, gets backdropped to the apron but smacks Ephesto away. Springboard plancha, one two NO. Místico off the ropes, crazy entry into a headscissors. Boos? Místico holds his hand up to his air. Off the ropes, spin around into – no, Ephesto throws off the Mistica attempt. Ephesto grabs Mistico by his legs, and Místico pulls off the Ephesto Cradle, one two three. Crowd is divided, loudly.

Match 4: Ultimo Guerrero vs Volador Jr. in a eightfinal match for the CMLL Universal Championship
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

Winner: Ultimo Guerrero
Match Time: 2:55
Rating: Big spot would've been cool, but still good
Notes: Why are they muting out the referee names? Looks like Rafael Maya. UG tries charging Volador at the whistle, Volador moves, then superkicks him down. No time to rally. Volador poses on the corner anyway. Whip, reversed, UG flapjacks Volador. Volador sits up, and gets murdered by a running knee to the face. UG wants to hear that crowd now. Clip, and UG is up on the apron and Volador in the rign. Did they cut out a dive? No, because Volador kcisk UG off the aprona dn to the floor. What's he going to do? Tope con giro, Volador tires to catch him, but Volador's hit him hard and they both fall backwards into the front row. Looks like UG accidentally rammed Volador's foot into the stomach of a guy still sitting in the front row for that. Replay. - UG clearly wanted to set up the next spot, but since they couldn't, they go back in to the ring other UG sets up Volador on the top rope, pulls him off in a standing crucifix, and Volador reverses it to a 'rana one two NO. UG looks around, then grabs Volador. Slam, and UG's going up? GUERERO moonsault looks worse than Mephisto and misses, Volador covers, one two NO. Volador's Sombra/Volador mix gear really looks good. He's up first, forcing UG into the corner. Corner whip, Volador follows with a superkick. UG sat on th top rope, Volador climbing up top – 'rana, no UG blocks it and superbombs him, one two three. UG walks around the ring, grabbing his head and looking like he's hurting. Good thing he's got another match!

Match 5: Negro Casas vs La Mascara in a eightfinal match for the CMLL Universal Championship
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

Winner: Negro Casas
Match Time: 2:18
Rating: very good for two minutes
Notes:This is the only match where w see an entrance, and that's because Negro starts strutting on the ramp instead of coming in. Rafael el Maya is ref. Negro tries to causally come in, and Mascara kicks him on his way thru. Chop, chop, headlock, holding it at the ropes, holding it a bit longer. Shot off, Mascara over, under, rolling over, and armdrags Negro over. Negro armdrags him again, Mascara tries to headscissors him, Mascara flips free first, zero leg trip, zero leg trip the other way, Negro gets a heel kick in before a standoff can happen. Pose. Match Time: 3:34
Rating: made the most of their time
Notes: Back to Pompin as ref. Garza stars on his knees, looking for a handshake. Místico turns around to ask, and gets dropkicked in the back of the head. That wasn't nice. Well, the dropkick was, actually, but facing Místico brings out the rudo. Garza throws Místico around by the head. Corner whip, high speed clothesline by Garza. Garza seem to be relishing this. Whip, Místico tossed up and dropkicked on the way down. Garza covers, one two no. Garza argues the count. Crowd chants for and against Místico. Negro's a bit more hurt. UG tries again, clothesline, and Negro won't go down. Negro tells him to try it again. Negro ducks it the clothesline this time, and dropkicks UG in the knee. Grabbing a leg, and looking around. Half crab! UG waving, but not giving up. Negro tightening up the hold, putting everything into it, but UG's crawling, and he has the ropes. Negro mid kicks UG in the midsection three times, then tries a corner whip. UG revers it, and in Negro goes. UG charges, Negro ducks down, and UG take the knee bump to the floor. Negro the apron – silla caught, and rammed into the pole! That's an easier catch. UG hold Negro up and tries I one more time, but Negro revers to a headscissors, ending UG's head into the post. Both guys down on the outside, time quickly drawing away from our apparent 4 minute time limit. Both come in at the same time on the same side, and en up facing off again. Match 8: Ultimo Guerrero vs Mistico in a semifinal match for the CMLL Universal Championship
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

Winner: Ultimo Guerrero
Match Time: 4:39
Rating: good finish to the tournament.
Notes: Baby Richard as ref. As we pick up, UG unsuccessfully tries to clothesline Místico on the ramp, and gets a headscissors back to the ring for his trouble. Místico waits for UG to get up, and springboards in for a 'rana – but UG cuts him off with a powerbomb. UG poses on his knees, maybe to regain some breath. Looking around at the crowd, and not at his opponent. Crowd seems to be louder for Místico. Whip, flapjack. One guy chants for another flapjack. UG picks up Místico by the mask and walks him over the ropes, where Místico waves of support. Whip, Místico over, Místico waved by, flipping run, waved by again, and back with the headscissors. Match 9: Shocker vs Dos Caras Jr.
Arena Mexico, 06/12/2009

  1. DQ Shocker (Dos faked low blow) (2:23)
  2. Shocker arm scissors (2:08)
  3. DQ Dos (Shocker faked low blow) (6:49)

Winner: Shocker
Match Time: 11:20
Rating: so so bad
Notes: Ref is Rafael el Maya. Shocker walks up the stairs to meet Dos, who is posing on top of the sage. Or not – because the actual dos comes out the side of the stage and clocks Shocker with a piñata stick. One more shot, and off to pose. The guy on top of the ramp just leaves, so no idea who that was (Lizmark?) Dos poses in time with his name, as Shocker rolls back to the ring. Referee pointing to his wrist is probably not a good sign as far as time goes. Introduces could speed up, that'd help. Whip, clothesline, and finally the whistle blows. Corner whip, Dos corner enziguri. Dos still posing with his jersey and tail on. Ah, now he'll take off his tail, so he can throw it someone. Dos grabs hocker by the head, and walks him to the stage. Suplex on the ramp. Pose. Suplex, no, reversed and shocker gets one of his own. Shocker charge Dos, clotheslining him back in. Crowd is seem to be being Shocker and cheering for Dos. Shocker rips up Dos' mask, rather easily. Shocker rallying with the crowd. Dos adjusts his trunks, adjusts his mask. Clothesline misses, and Dos kinda sorta runs into the ref. Shocker tries his kick, Dos steps over the leg, putting the foot between his legs, and waits to until the ref has turned around so he can pretend to be fouled. Ref busy it and awards the fall. Cut to a person looking bored. I know that feeling!

2: Chop, battle. Shocker pulls down his straps and wins it. Headlock, off the ropes, over, Shocker punch misses, Dos superkick does not. Dos back to posing, and stripping his shirt off. Jersey thrown out to Dr. Morales. Back elbow for Shocker. Corner whip, reverses, Shocker hits his clothesline, runs Dos to the other corner for another clothesline, and ends with a bulldog. Boos for Shocker as he poses. Shocker waits for Dos to get up. Dos brushes off a springboard dropkick, and swats Shocker down. Dos waits or Shocker to get up, weak clothesline, Shocker waistlock into an arm scissors. Dos' move, you see. That's it. Lots of boos.

3: Dos would like shocker to wait so he can pose. Why Shocker decides to turn this into a pose off is beyond me. Perhaps he's gone deaf. Shocker keeps trying, and pretend as if he's getting cheers. Dos chest slaps him in the corner, pointing up on each one. Shocker and Dos take turns turning around, with Shocker getting his knock out punch last. Shocker with a delayed cover, one two no. Shocker kicks Dos in the shoulder as many times until Dos catches it, and Shocker then pulls him into a 'rana, one two no. I'm nostalgic for the 3 minute falls now. Rallying. Chop. Corner whip, Shocker charge in, Dos gets him with a corner sunset flip one two no. Dos works Shocker over in the corner. Corner whip, Dos charges in, Shocker ducks down, and Dos takes a flipping knee bump to the floor. Did he land on his face? Shocker waits for him, and then knocks into him with a tope con giro. Shocker crawls in, Dos back in behind him and kicking him down. Magadan calls Dos “ex-campion universal de peso completo”. Yea, who really knows what the titles are called anyway. Tapatía? Announcers too busy loudly hyping up the GDL show to care. Shocker steps out and get on an STF instead, but Dos isn't giving up. Dos gets to the ropes. Both back up, and Dos pinwheels Shocker by his head. Muscle pose, and Dos is finally getting boots. Thumb across the throats. Press, quick dropped into the German suplex one two NO. Dos can't believe it. Both up. Dos charges, and ends up knocking down the ref again. More on purpose, less caring this time. Shocker charge him, Dos spins him, Shocker lands on his feet, then drops down to fake a foul. Ref is up, Dos argues, but loses – DQ, win for Shocker. Referee keeps pointing to his eyes, which is funny since he didn't see it. You can see 2/3rds of the crowd immediately get up and leave. Shocker gets up, celebrates, and sells, and the show is almost immediately over.
