Recap: 06/06/09

Promos: Ephesto (man of few words) & Rey Bucanero (fired up and with his friends – Atlantis does thumbs up to Rey's taunt)

Match 1: Dr. X, Hooligan ©, Skandalo vs Angel Azteca Jr. ©, Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata
Arena Mexico, 05/22/2009

  1. rudos
  2. tecnicos
  3. tecnicos

Winner: tecnicos (2-1)
Match Time: 8:47
Rating: Good in parts, some creative ideas
Notes: Refs are Bestia Negra and Babe Richard.

1: Angel de Oro works with Skandalo, with the big spot being tossed out of the ring into a headscissors on Hooligan on the ramp. Dr. X/Azteca doesn't have much interesting, with Skandalo ambushing Aztec with a shoulderblock to send him out for a tope con giro apron dive by Dr. X. Angels storm the ring, Oro tosses Plata into a 'rana on Hooligan, but Hooligan blocks it and drops Plata with the Hooligan Crash. Skandalo Driver on Oro at the same time for the finish.

2: Rudos in control of the ring. Oro's isolated in, with his partners arguing from the outside. He’s held on the middle rope for Hooligan's senton con giro, totally squashing him. Azteca in, as Plata walks over to the other side to make sure Oro is still in one piece. Corner whip, corner clothesline, corner clothesline, legs held apart for Skandalo's running low blow dropkick – kinda slipped on that one. Plata in, and knocked down. Corner whip, corner clothesline, corner running back elbow, corner thru the ropes clothesline setting up X's outside in dropkick. Azteca back in, and slowly backed up to the ropes, rudos too busy with the crowd than anything else. Whip, back drop, Aztec lands on his feet, X grabs him, and Skandalo and Hooligan accidentally chop their partner. Azteca rolls over a double boot, under a double clothesline, Plata comes in and boost Azteca into a dropkick on both big guys. Oro offers a foot plant, and Azteca jumps off his arms into a moonsault to the floor – didn't really get much on that, but connected. Oro with a roll into a bodyscissors into a mercedora on Skandalo, while Plata takes out Hooligan with an atomic drop bomb. Tied up.

3: Oro and Skandalo in. Skandalo over, under, rolling over – wait, why is he the guy running? Oro runs, handspring into a plancha, for zero. Odd. Oro drops to his back to avoid a clothesline, kips up immediately, and superkicks Skandalo out. Hooligan is on him quick with a back elbow, and taunts the rest of the tecnicos. Corner whip, Oro slowly (and a bit clumsily) climbs the ropes, and comes down with a headscissors. Oro off the ropes, into a quebradora, and he rolls out. That was easy. Hooligan does his own dive tease, and dances a bit. Plata stop that with a top rope plancha. Hooligan bumps him, off the ropes, and into Oro's headscissors. Dr. X in, Oro springboard tope – he got hung up on the ropes for a second, and tried to make it up with by putting more force into the tope. Dr. X comes back with a springboard armdrag, to send Oro out. Punch to Azteca is blocked, and Azteca flips into the ring and armdrags him. Azteca avoids Dr. X a bit (including a leapfrog looking the wrong way), then climbs up the ropes to straddle them for no reason. Dr. X waits as he jumps on top of the ropes, and comes off with a headscissors. Dive fake, but Skandalo back elbows him out. Oro in with a forward roll, Skandalo misses a clothesline but back elbows him anyway. Big chest slap. Corner whip, Oro flips to the apron, then pulls himself to the top rope for a missile dropkick. Oro looks around for someone to hit, shoulderblocks Dr. X as he comes in, then bends over for Plata to jump off for a headscissors on X. Oro gathers speed for a dive, but Skandalo gets in a shot from the apron – he’s on the wrong side for no reason. Plata drops to all fours, and Oro leaps off his back to dropkick Skandalo to the floor. Plata whips Oro, then bends over so Oro can leap off his back for a big plancha. Plata goes out the other way with a tope con giro. Azteca and Hooligan in, Aztec 'rana, Hooligan rolls thru one two no, Azteca kicks free. Azteca springboard spinning small package one two three.

Match 2: Atlantis, Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Guerrero © vs Averno ©, Ephesto, Mephisto
Arena Coliseo, 05/24/2009

  1. Hijo de Avernos
  2. Guerreros
  3. Hijo de Avernos

Winner: Hijo de Avernos (2-1)
Match Time: 13:09
Rating: Brawl, unnoetworthy.
Notes: Guerreros enter first, Rey trailing behind. Of course, since I'm mentioning this, you already can guess the Avernos rush out and beat him up. Stomp down on the ramp, while his partners are paying no attention. Still, we get the interviews (Guerreros, Avernos as groups) before they pick up the action.

1: Ephesto beats up Rey on the outside, while everyone else takes it to the ring. Anything. Averno was actually not wearing his t-shirt in the interview, but it is back on here. I'm not unsure how that actually makes sense, but okay. Mostly brawling, and just as I say that, they give Atlantis a back elbow. Bucanero held in the ring for Ephesto to kick. Bucanero gets on top of Ephesto for a sec, but his partners break that out. Crowd decides to chant for Atlantis for lack of anything better to do. Ephesto tries to remove Bucanero's hair, but I don't think that'll work. Averno and Mephisto give UG a double backdrop. Ephesto and Rey go back into the front row, as Averno and Mephisto take care of the other two. Averno stands around with a double underhook on UG, waiting for Mephisto grab Atlantis already so they can do Devil's Wings in stereo. Producer totally misses the shot! It wasn't like it was some surprise bit. Oh well. That's the fall, anyway. They get too it on replays, but they shouldn't have missed it the first time either, Ephesto was just dragging Rey around ringside to slam him on the ramp at the time.

For no reason I know, Julio Cesar runs down Ephesto's history here – it's worth noting that they're acknowledging him as ex-Safari, ex-Pantera del Ring, since there was a time where Hombre sin Nombre was a mysterious new person with no connection to previous luchadors.

2: Hijo still in control, still doing mostly one on one brawling, with occasional pauses to help each other. Rey Bucanero's isolated for a whip that takes forever to set up, but it goes okay – spinebuster, Ephesto rebound hiptoss on top. Ephesto lays on top of Rey, but the refs don't want to count – I guess Rey has a shoulder up. Atlantis stand there arguing, and eventually walks into a punch form Mephisto. Hijos take a while to set up the Guerreros sit on Atlantis, and don’t hit it good. UG in. Held in the corner while Averno poses. Whip, triple boot, triple dive fake. This has not been interesting. Rey rushes the ring to grab onto to Ephesto, but Ephesto manages to stop him with a forearm to the back. Choke on the top rope. Low energy match, for sure. Guerrero sit on Rey's back – no, Averno gets yanked out, Mephisto follows, and Rey hits Ephesto with a spinning kick. Rey pounds Ephesto with punches and – goes after his mask? Be nice if we could get an angle of it. Atlantis UG clean house on the outside. Rey and Ephesto get up and get in chest slap fight. Crowd not really as in to it as you might think. Ephesto chop, whip, no, Rey just kinda stops, Ephesto looks at him, runs, misses a clothesline and slides out. Now Rey is just last looking at Ephesto. We're all professionals here. Rey runs, and rolls out to the floor as Ephesto dodges. Ephesto charges him, and gets hiptossed on the floor. Other for in, and Avernos run right into Atlantidas. 1-1

Rey rips at Ephesto's mask on the floor, then breaks him back in the ring for more. I think he ripped it quite good there. Ephesto manages to roll to safety, but not without Mephisto getting beat up by Atlantis some.

Random history of the Infernales->Guerreros de Atlantida. It's a 15 second piece, but we're told it was Satanico/Rey/UG, then Toscano/Rey/UG, then Atlantis/Toscano/Rey/UG – the huge contributions of Eclipse (and real ones of others) go unmentioned.

3: Averno fooling around on the outside, to the point of having to break the count and go back out at least once. UG ready to face Averno, so course he decides to taunt Atlantis instead. Crowd behind Guerrero. Pose off – there’s definitely support for both sides. Or support against both sides. Ready to go? Ooh, now Mephisto's in. And now he's got to pose. Lockup, Mephisto over, running clothesline. Maybe don't just stand there next time, UG? Just a thought. Mephisto poses, while UG shakes. Whip, reversed, UG armdrags Mephisto. Ultimo Guerrero headscissors! It was passable, but let's never do that again. Averno jumps in and kicks UG down before he can show off the rest of his nifty tecnico flashy moves. Stomps, posing. Mephisto stays in. Corner whip, Mep runs into boots, Averno and UG have a stareoff about who's charging, UG decides to, headscissors/armdrag combo. UG ducks a clothesline, spinning backbreaker for Mep. Averno misses a clothesline, UG running tope. And another! That 's cool. Quebadora for him again. UG actually tags in Atlantis, but it's Rey who comes roll in when he sees Ephesto come in for his side. Referees want Rey out because he's not the legal man, so he chases Ephesto outside the ring. Ephesto runs up the aisle, messing with a guy on his phone. Everyone gets settled down, and Averno and Atlantis end up in. Atlantis side steps a dropkick (after it was thrown, not even close.) Off the ropes, and knocked down by a Mephisto kick. Mep in to help, since that worked so well last time. Whip, clothesline misses, Atlantis plancha on both. Atlantis armdrag on Mephisto, Averno kicked into a dropkick on his partner, quebradora on Averno. One more one Mephisto. Atlantis taunts Ephesto in, then tags out to Bucanero. Ephesto misses a bad dropkick, Rey off the ropes, clothesline misses, everyone looks at each other, Rey just grabs Ephesto and runs with him to the ropes – Ephesto slid out, Rey slides on top. Punches on the floor. Averno in, as Rey's partners wonder if he’s done. Everyone not feuding hits the ring, with the Atlantis dropkicking both with a boost from UG. Double tope! Rey and Ephesto in. Ephesto off the ropes, over, under a clothesline, spinebuster by Rey. Rey picks up Ephesto by the legs, and Ephesto hooks his neck and rolls him – bodyscissors cradle two three. Clean win.

Avernos celebrate. Rey demands a mask vs hair match against Ephesto. Ephesto waves it off, then comes back in the ring to attack Rey as he poses on his partner's shoulders. Everyone else just stands off as Ephesto slams Rey's head into the apron. Now Ephesto gets the microphone to say maybe, after he wins the title on Tuesday.
