CMLL Line - did not air/probably was not taped (#154)
Typed: 10/20/04

Due to Olympic coverage, CMLL's Televisa show was preempted for three weeks. This is the second of those weeks, replacing the 08/20/04 show.

I have no idea if the shows were even taped, but CMLL does consider any show, taped or not, at Arena Mexico as part of their continuity. This is what you might have seen, if they aired an episode, based on the show results. (Times taken from KrisZ's recap)

This show was the Gran Alternativa Tournament. More information about Gran Alternativa can be found here; the short version is it's a 8 team tournament with starts teaming with young undercarders. And this year, it was stacked. They probably wouldn't have aired all of the matches, but I'll list them all anyway.

1) QF: El Hijo Del Santo and Mistico b Misterioso & Miserioso II in 8:27
As men with silver masks and religious overtones, Santo and Mistico were a natural team. As best I know, the Misterioso were actually father and son and this was Misterioso I's first match in Arena Mexico in 12 years. Misterioso was a high spot artist in his day, and both the younger members here were on their way to be similar, so I imagine that's how it went.

2) QF: Atlantis & Volador Jr. DQW Perro Aguayo and Sangre Azteca in 11:14
More Perro acting like an out of control loon, and he and Atlantis still have issues at this point. He pulled Atlantis' mask off, and so went Sangre's chances here.

3) QF: Dr. X & Ultimo Guerrero b Neutron and Ultimo Dragon in 5:16
Ultimo Dragon is making a cameo during his summer on leave from the WWE and closing down Toryumon Japan. Dr. X was part of GdI's undercard Guerrero faction, so it was a natural fit.

4) QF: Shocker & Alan Stone b Mascara Sagrada & Sagrado in 8:11
Sagrada, Sagrado, ha. Alan Stone was a Guapo 2004 Wannabe; according the Internet, he had already been accepted, but up to two episodes again, that had not been mentioned on the television show. So who knows.

5) SF: El Hijo Del Santo and Mistico b Atlantis and Volador Jr. in 4:16
This was sort of interesting; it was probably the same high flying style, but Santo went over Volador's mask. Santo and Volador Sr. had an issue way back when, costing Volador Jr. his mask - and more recently, when Super Parka was revealed to also be Volador Sr during that mask/mask match.

6) SF: Dr. X & Ultimo Guerrero b Shocker & Alan Stone in 2:10
That's kinda criminally short. Ultimo used Shocker's own reinera on him to win.

7) Final: El Hijo Del Santo & Mistico b Dr. X and Ultimo Guerrero in 5:47
You team with El Hijo Del Santo, you do good things. Like the previous matchup, they had two stars who'd previous fought a bunch. This is a pretty high finish for Dr. X, who's gotten some time in the past during a Mexican Welterweight Championship feud against Tigre Blanco but hasn't really gone anywhere. I'm guessing it was to swerve the people who were expecting this to be a Aguayo/Santo rematch. Mistico, on the other hand, seemed to belong here, and onto bigger things after.

The goal of the tournament was to springboard Mistico - a man with a new gimmick and a high flying style - into the "up and coming star everyone should watch to", and by teaming him with Santo and having him roll here, they did accomplish that. Mistico's held up to his end; it's probably unfair to Sagrado to keep harping on his early appearances, but Mistico could hit the agile spots from the moment they started pushing him, so people bought into the New Star idea CMLL was selling. The point was to get Mistico over, and Mistico got over.

9) Rayo de Jalisco, Canek, Mr. Niebla b Universo 2000, Hector Garza, Vampiro
Run of the mill Rayo vs Universo, as build to their mask vs mask match. Notice Canek is included and Wagner isn't; at this point, the booking doesn't seem to think anything is going to happen to that mask match.
