The main event was pretty good; otherwise, this was an easily skippable Friday show. Nothing happened; most stuff was just OK, and some stuff was not at the level of other Friday nights.

Chris Jericho sent in a video talking up his match with Mistico. Mistico responded after his win. Nothing much new ground, except Jericho was doing some of his Learning Tree bits. He had done a stripped-down basic rudo bit in his previous appearances, and only the most dedicated Mexican AEW fan (the ones subscribing to AEW+ on Triller) would have any idea what Jericho was trying to do with his catchphrases.

Nothing extraordinary, but slightly better than usual for a Sunday show.

Felino Jr. works in such a disinterested style that I never realized they were working for the draw until after they got nine minutes. He always wrestles as if he’s going for the ten-minute draw.

Candela and Magia Azul had some good moves but looked lost between those moves. Candela was the better of the two. Both need a lot more ring time, but they’re not completely hopeless, either.

Hechicero unmasked Euforia, Valiente, and his partner Esfinge.

A clip of the main event finish shows Hechicero and Esfinge unmasking Valiente and Euforia. Esfinge decided to swing at Hechicero as they were both celebrating, and Hechicero ended up unmasking him, too. Esfinge is a poor stragetical mind.

AMX is the station that streams some of the matches from this weekly Sunday show on an internet stream, but that stream was down all weekend. It’s back up Monday, but the 07/28 taping is lost to time. That show does exist on CMLL’s YouTube channel, but in a private video that the promotion has decided to make available at any price.

CMLL (MON) 08/12/2024 Arena Puebla

6) Místico, Soberano Jr., Templario vs Máscara Dorada, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.

CMLL booked the normal amount of rudos and tecnicos for the top matches, but the main event is messed up on both sides because the semi-main is messed up on both sides.

I’d like to see Virus/Pantera, but I doubt it’ll make it to TV. Women’s tag match should be fun.

CMLL (TUE) 08/13/2024 Arena México

5) Flip Gordon, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Soberano Jr., Stuka Jr., Terrible

Putting aside training situations, Vegas seems like the best fit for Los Depredadores: physically talented, solid worker, lacking a lot of personality. Teaming with those guys may bring it out to him. Crixus is going to get pushed before he’s ready – because he looks like CMLL’s dream wrestler, he gets a good reaction, and also he may never actually progress to ‘ready’ – but he doesn’t seem to fit along Magia Blanca, Rugido and Magnus. Legendario’s the other person in this group that’s over, but he’s a more tecnico character, and it seems a missed chance to turn him rudo here.

Match 3 is the new trios champs against Los Chacales. Coyote’s been missing for about three weeks.

CMLL (FRI) 08/16/2024 Arena México
1) Astro Boy Jr., Eléctrico, Leono vs Grako, Nitro, Sangre Imperial
2) La Catalina, Princesa Sugehit, Sanely vs Dark Silueta, Persephone, Zeuxis
3) Dulce Gardenia, Pelon Encapuchado, Volcano vs Akuma, Difunto, Zandokan Jr.
4) Neón vs Robbie X [lightning]
5) Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja vs Mansoor & Rocky Romero
6) Atlantis Jr., Esfinge, Místico vs Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero, Valiente

The foreigners start trickling in for the Gran Prix, though Mansoor and Rocky are headed back to the US for Collision on Saturday. Neon in a singles match is always a necessary test. I do no know if the Mansoor male model gimmick will get over with this crowd. (It’s not my thing, but it is also beside the point.) Leono making two straight Fridays is odd; that opener seems like getting people their scheduled work hours on an unusual day.

CMLL released the Friday show lineup on Saturday, which they did normally until the last year or so. Not sure if it’s a one-time thing, but CMLL also released the Gran Prix card:

CMLL (FRI) 08/23/2024 Arena México
1) Fugaz vs Villano III Jr. [lightning]
2) Lluvia & Tessa Blanchard vs ? & ??
Opponents to be announced
3) Atlantis, Blue Panther, Octagón vs Ángel de Oro, Bárbaro Cavernario, Soberano Jr.
4) Akira, Claudio Castagnoli, Davey Boy Smith Jr., Flip Gordon, Ikuro Kwon, Kyle Fletcher, Mansoor, Robbie X, Rocky Romero, Yota vs Atlantis Jr., Esfinge, Euforia, Máscara Dorada, Místico, Templario, Titán, Último Guerrero, Valiente, Volador Jr. [Gran Prix]

Putting Villano III Jr. on a big show sounds fun, though I wish he had a better opponent. I’m less thrilled about seeing Octagon there. Lluvia & Tessa’s opponents sound like a CMLL Informa deal, which is strange if it’s just meant to be two CMLL rudas. Perhaps there’s a chance it will be someone else.

This weekend, a weird bit of timing ended with MLW and CMLL airing taped Magnus versus Mistico matches. MLW aired one taped on 07/12 on YouTube on Saturday, CMLL’s show on Televisa Puebla aired the one taped 08/05 on Sunday night. I have the Puebla one as slightly better, though it takes longer to get there because of the three fall format. The crowd knows the story, Mistico makes a better and more substantial comeback in Puebla.

The announcing hampers the MLW version of Magnus/Mistico. MLW has had CMLL people in for months now, and the announcers still don’t know them beyond their Wikipedia profiles and have no sense of what’s going on in their home promotion. They were trying to sell it as Mistico and Magnus normally got along until the Opera Cup got in the way when these guys had been feuding for months and were doing their normal CMLL feud match. If the MLW guys were as oblivious to an NJPW rivalry between their wrestlers, it would’ve gotten fixed after one show – I guess they can be grateful they don’t have 100 people yelling at them on social media when they get something like this wrong. I wish they cared about being authentic to the brand they’re trying to represent, but so it goes.

Mistico is next scheduled to wrestle Atlantis Jr. in the Opera Cup tournament. That’s one where there’s no obvious finish – Mistico is Mistico, but AEW would probably prefer Atlantis Jr. not to lose matches while ROH TV champion. MLW has strangely announced that TJP will be a replacement if anyone happens to leave the tournament, which likely means TJP is facing Mistico.

After that Puebla show, Magnus declared he’s on the side of anyone against Mistico, pledging to help Chris Jericho at the Aniversario should he ask for it.

El Grafico has more details on the CMLL summer camp that they’ve often promoted on CMLL Informa for the last few weeks. They ran a pilot program last year with just kids of CMLL employees, and they’ve opened it up to more people this year. The kids are at Arena Mexico for five hours a day and get two classes. One is an art class with Ivonne and Cesar Valero, the artists behind the Dia del Muerto promotion and the cartoon history videos CMLL does. The other class is a wrestling class with referee Tigre Infante (Metalico), who’s an accredited Olympic wrestling coach. Infante and his fellow coaches said they’re not trying to recruit the new batch of CMLL luchadors but more to teach them values and discipline. They all have a CMLL wrestler stop by the camp; Titan was there the day Grafico stopped by. This sounds like a one-day camp.

AAA

More Dorian Roldan interviews have come out after the TripleMania press conference, and there’s an interesting spin on the current situation with Penta and Fenix’s names. Roldan confirmed AAA is blocking their wrestlers from appearing on shows with them but frames it as an IP issue—he’s only blocking them because he feels they’re using AAA-owned names, not because they’re working with CMLL or AEW or whomever. He wishes them well but wants to protect the IP.

It’s worth stepping back here to understand the change around this. AAA in Mexico owns Pentagon Jr. and Fenix. Lucha Libre FMV (the Lucha Underground holding company owned by a group including AAA) owns the names in the US. After leaving AAA around 2017, they switched to Penta el Zero M and Rey Fenix, among other variations. The idea seemed they were legally distinct enough from AAA names to get away with them, just as the original La Parka had switched to LA Park. AAA did not appear to fight this battle for years, through times when the Lucha Brothers were working with AAA and times when they were not. Only recently, AAA apparently decided that even the “Penta el Zero M” and “Rey Fenix” names are too close to their owned names and have threatened issues. (At least in Mexico; it hasn’t seemed to affect them in the US.) The timing of the change suggests it was those two men showing up in CMLL that caused the issue, and CMLL was clearly aware there was an issue in how they went with safe alternative names. I suspect it wasn’t actually AAA getting angry about CMLL; I believe whatever AAA is trying to do to get an influx of capital is connected to their owned IP. Either they’re being far more aggressive about threatening legal action to make it more valuable, or whomever they’re working with has requested them to take it more seriously. AAA acted similarly with Black Taurus/Beast Mortos and hasn’t gone to CMLL. It’s still an open question if AAA is going to be this strict on just people who have decided not to work with them, or if they’re going to go after the others who still use gimmicks or names invented by AAA on indies but are just people, AAA’s not interested in. The other Alebrijes, Infierno Rockers, and other minor characters running around may be in trouble, but I wonder what happens to the Electroshock level when AAA is done using them for this Origines tour. Or, it could be a promoter just making decisions to justify his feelings.

Talking with Record, Dorian Roldan said AAA would like to have an alliance with WWE – but in the way where AAA would like to have alliances with everyone, not that they’re specifically working with AAA right now. Roldan says they work with TNA, NOAH and AEW. (Working with NOAH seems like news? Maybe he meant GLEAT? Maybe he’s thinking of past times when they did work with NOAH?) Roldan says he doesn’t know where AAA’s relationship with AEW stands – he thinks it’s solid but believes it may be better to ask AEW that question because he claims not to know what’s going on. He sees the distance between AEW and AAA as a function of NJPW and CMLL only wanting to work together and pulling AEW away from AAA rather than any issue between AAA and AEW themselves. Roldan acknowledged that CMLL is doing phenomenally but feels that AAA is pulling in a different audience and doing great themselves.

AAA on Space was treated as a TripleMania preview. The many “preview” shows AAA’s aired this year run old matches with the idea that they’re relevant to the show that’s coming up. It’s a way to very cheaply produce a TV episode without running an actual taping anything that week, which makes absolutely no sense if those AAA shows are as successful as AAA continually claims – if business is good, they’d be adding more tapings instead of cutting them down. (AAA is on pace to run 18 tapings this year, down from 22 last year.)

The one thing that seems worth doing on a TripleMania preview show is to run through the matches on the card. AAA’s done this with their past preview shows. They did not do it here; the show just ended with Psycho & Casas celebrating their tag title win in Juarez. My guess is AAA edited this episode together at the same time they did the Verano de Escnadlao preview show (aired on 07/27), and they didn’t have the TripleMania lineup locked in at that point. That’s a bizarre way to produce a TV show, and it’s equally strange they couldn’t have taped an extra two minutes this past week to jam at the end of the episode with the lineup. They didn’t make the effort.

(Space cares about getting people to watch TripleMania more than AAA actually does and has been promoting the top three matches in an ad for weeks.)

One other thing bugs me. AAA choosing to air an old Faby Apache match instead of the one they taped last week is idiotic. I know that’s harsh, but there is no point in arguing it. Faby won a #1 contenders match on Verano de Escandalo, which will now not air for weeks until after her title match happens. That kind of goofy behavior makes everyone involved with the promotion look dumb. They shouldn’t bother to air it if they couldn’t air it this week, but AAA treats their TV show as an irrelevant obligation rather than a marketing tool.

The AAA on Unimas show is as dumbly produced. We still don’t know the ratings numbers for that AAA show, and it doesn’t appear AAA knows either – Konnan mentioned on his podcast that they haven’t been able to get numbers from the network, with the network saying they’ve been busy with Copa America and the Olympics. Still, based on past numbers on that channel, AAA on Unimas has in the range of 200K viewers. If even 0.1% of those watching Unimas were convinced to take a chance on a TripleMania, that’s 200 extra buys. I think that’s a useful amount for a promotion that seems to use the money. Unfortunately, this is AAA, so there’s no mention there’s a TripleMania a week away, and definitely no mention that someone could pay to watch the show on Triller TV. Perhaps they’ll pound it home at the last second next week, but history suggests the TV will continue to just exist for TV’s sake.

Fresero Jr. claims his time in AAA has ended after just one match. Could be true, though Fresero Jr. just says a lot of things.

7) Pagano NC DMT AzulDemonio Infernal EN VIVO | PAGANO vs DMT AZUL vs DEMONIO INFERNAL + LAREDO KID VS METALIK | LUCHA LIBRE ELITE (posted by mluchatv)
Pagano left with a shoulder injury (which seemed to be an angle), and then a mystery man ran in to attack both men. The stream ended here. There appeared to be no finish live.

My best guess is the idea was you were supposed to think Soberano Jr. was the mystery man, but it was also clearly not Soberano Jr. That sentence doesn’t really make sense, and neither does this promotion. The previous ELITE show (from April) went up on Mas Lucha’s YouTube channel on Saturday. That one is visibly a TV pilot, so perhaps we can read the long break between the shows as ELITE hoping to get picked up, and it just never happens. This stream was a (lesser quality) Mas Lucha production, including mics that were way out of sync and the stream ending prematurely. The matches don’t look good, and the finishes in the top matches are all stunk. ELITE previously indicated they’d be back in September, but they didn’t actually announce a date here.

There were very few tickets sold to this show on Ticketmaster map, just like last show. There are a decent amount of people in the seats by mid-show, just like last time. I presume Elite is just papering these shows. Mas Lucha set up the hard camera to face a wall instead of the stands, so they must’ve believed those stands would be pretty empty.

News agency EFE interviews Argenis in the lead-up to this show, but it turned out to be more about the life of an independent Mexican luchador. Argenis has just been in that lifestyle for the last year and talks about the tradeoff of having more freedom but not having the support system of a promotion if it goes wrong. Argenis says he’s hoping his TV fame will continue to allow him to get more work, and being independent has allowed him more time with his family. He believes wrestlers who’ve established themselves in a big company should try indie for a while to broaden their knowledge and meet new colleagues.

Todo x el Todo

Bobo Productions posted the Queretaro lineup

TXT (SAT) 10/05/2024 Arena Arteaga, Querétaro, Querétaro
1) Lady Apache & Therius vs Hija de Fuerza Guerrera & Keyra
2) Hijo del Alebrije, Hijo del Solar, Ultramán Jr. vs Canek Jr., Súper Nova, Verdugo
3) Ciclón Ramírez Jr. & Cinta de Oro vs Bobby Lee Jr. & Texano Jr.
4) El Hijo Del Santo & LA Park vs Dr. Wagner Jr. & Fuerza Guerrera

Nothing special here. They won’t do anything extra on these shows unless/until they tank. Doing nothing more than promising the last match ever in that town has worked for Vampiro, so I guess it’s worth a try for El Hijo del Santo.

El Hijo del Santo’s retirement interview tour took him to ImagenTV’s “El Minute que Cambio mi Desitno” interview show. The big viral bit of the show is after a discussion about El Santo’s unmasking in his final TV appearance, El Hijo del Santo unmasking. It’s 48 minutes in, but you don’t see anything – they turn the lights down, and Santo’s still careful to hide his face from any camera as he hands off one mask to the host and puts another on. Infobae summarizes the rest of the interview and many of the stories are ones you may have heard before. He explains his situation with AAA as him agreeing to a verbal deal to do TripleMania, AAA shortchanging him on money, Santo having no legal recourse because it was a verbal deal, and then suing over the image rights as a way to get the money owed to him in the first place. One thing I didn’t know was his personal family situation. El Hijo del Santo has talked about his wife and two kids but apparently has other kids from a first marriage. Santo claims that first wife was physically violent towards her, he reported her to the police, and they didn’t take his complaints seriously. He has no contact with the children from that relationship after the end of the relationship.

ROH taped weeks of TV in unclear order over the last few weeks; only the people behind the curtain know the order of these matches airing.

Other Notes

IWRG’s Sundays stream failed, just like Thursday’s stream. They say they’ll have the Sunday stream up as a VOD on Monday. They also didn’t post results from most of their show, though there’s a lineup for next Thursday:

IWRG (THU) 08/15/2024 Arena Naucalpan
1) Sacro vs Rock Power
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Tornado, Willy Banderas vs Fly Star, Hysteriosis, Ovett Jr.
3) Noisy Boy & Spider Fly vs Águila Roja & Puma de Oro
4) Gran Pandemónium, Hijo de Pandemónium, Pandemónium Jr. vs Arez, Látigo, Toxin
5) Hell Boy & Hijo de Canis Lupus vs Flamita & Galeno del Mal

Flamita returns from his Dragon Gate run. It’s notable he’s back in IWRG, as there seemed to be a break between this promotion and Big Lucha after some incidents in a FULL/Big Lucha cibernetico years ago. Mostly I’m curious if the strong performances Flamita’s been putting in for Dragon Gate will also be seen in Mexico.

El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. is out of NOAH’s N1 tournament due to a neck sprainDr. Landru says he talked to Wagner3 on Sunday; Wagner originally feared it was a much worse injury, and instead, he’ll just need to rest for a while.

Segunda Caida reviews early Misawa & Koshinika in Mexico.

An author visits Arena Planeta de Campeones in Guatemala City, where the promoter and the wrestlers convince the author that this is the last dying breath of lucha libre left in the country. There’s at least one and maybe three other promotions running in that same city.

5) Atlantis, Octagón, Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Stuka Jr., Último Guerrero
6) Máscara Dorada, Místico, Templario vs Ángel de Oro, Bárbaro Cavernario, Soberano Jr.

Not much on the line. The four men in the mask match are conspicuously getting a Fruday off. Mistico has his match with Chris Jericho, and nothing else has been set up for the Aniversario show. Perhaps that’s changing – a CMLL Friday night show with nothing coming out of it would be normal in the past and unusual in 2024. Otherwise, this may be an easy week to skip.

The main event looks like it could be great if those involved in it want it to be. The semi-main will not be great in that fashion. Difunto/Dragon Rojo is two people who don’t wrestle much. The latest Porra Fresa/Cacneberos match may be the second most important on the show.

5) La Catalina, Lluvia, Tessa Blanchard vs Dark Silueta, Persephone, Zeuxis
6) Atlantis Jr. & Místico vs Averno & Mephisto

Nothing jumps out as notable here, though match four could be good.

CMLL Informa mentioned a cibernetico next Tuesday in Arena Mexico to decide a new member of Los Depredadores. No one’s getting pushed out; they’re expanding the group. It’ll be a ten-person match, mostly of Torneo Escuelas and opener wrestlers:

  • Dragon de Fuego
  • Legendario
  • Emperador Jr.
  • Retro
  • Rayo Metalico
  • Infarto
  • Alom
  • Hunter
  • Crixus
  • Vegas
The current on-screen Los Depredadores are leader Volador Jr. with Magnus, Magia Blanca, Rugido, and Max Star. The big idea is that Max Star is busy with los Viajeros now; he’s still part of the unit, but they’re looking for another person. The behind-the-scenes Depreadores are a group of wrestlers who train with Volador regularly, including those in his on-screen group and others not associated with him in that way. (Occasionally, you’ll catch them wearing the Depreador armband in their matches.) Ultimo Guerrero used to run a select CMLL advanced class and there were jealous murmurs that people in that class got a booking advantage over those UG didn’t like as much to include in his training. That grumbling has moved to Volador’s class now; Raider made an IG comment a few months ago grouching about the Depredador mafia. The point of all this is if CMLL is going to add someone to the on-screen Los Depreadores group, it’s probably coming from the behind-the-scenes Depredadores training group. Legendario and Crixus both seem like people CMLL will want to push, but it’s Vegas who posts IG stories of himself training with Volador Jr., so he’s the most likely pick.
CMLL Informa also mentioned that Lluvia would be on Team Mexico for the women’s Gran Prix. That was expected.
The WON mentions that Templario is expected to get his work visa in about a month. Those are often not solid timelines, but I expect others who’ve been impacted by visa issues—like Mascara Dorada and Volador—are probably in the same group and would be available to be booked in AEW, MLW, NJPW Strong, and elsewhere around the same time.

Mistico was honored by the mayor of Acapulco for twenty years of wrestling before wrestling in Arena Coliseo Acapulco on Wednesday. He praised the people of Acapulco for their reliance following last year’s Hurricane Otis.

AAA

AAA on Space will finish Verano de Escandalo, while AAA on Unimas will finish TripleMania Tijuana. Ideally, that Unimas show should be pumping the TripleMania Mexico City and getting people to buy it on Triller, but it hasn’t been activated as a selling tool in that way.

Kenzo Suzuki mentioned he’s part of TripleMania, so he’s likely one name in the Copa TripleMania. His post (via machine translation) says this will probably be his last match in Mexico. He’s looking forward to finally visiting La Parka’s grave, who he calls his best friend. Suzuki was a regular in AAA from 2007 to 2010. The Money Machine tag team also talked about being part of their first TripleMania, so they must expect to be in that match, too.

The second part of the TripleMania press conference was a co-promotion for CapitalBus, who is running a TuriLuchas-style tourist bus service for TripleMania. The bus will have a wrestler onboard, and everyone will get a mask, a backstage tour, and a seat in Zone 1. Tickets are 1,450 pesos (~76 USD).

Dorian Roldan did some interviews with media outlets following that TripleMania press conference, which are always useful to at least give AAA’s spin on things. One of them was with La Tijera Lucha Libre. The response to the TripleMania Mexico City lineup on social media has been negative. Roldan sees that just as social media hate. Plenty of successful things get a lot of hate, and they feel like they’re successful in their important metrics – in TV ratings, sponsorship relationships, and social media views. AAA will not be a promotion for every group of fans, though they expect that the Matt Riddle/Laredo Kid/Komander match is something the group that hates them will like. Roldan pushes the idea of the Vipers versus La Secta as a story that’s gone through the year. I guess I really hadn’t given it enough consideration; when the Mala Fama guys were still the Vipers, there was definitely meant to be a heated issue about Cibernetico abandoning them. The changes in the Vipers lineup and Cibernetico spending most of the year in the Secta feud have just dulled down the feud, though AAA tried to get it going again on the last couple of tapings. He believes AAA remains a great place for Mexican wrestlers to get seen by the US, talking about all the people who’ve passed through AAA on the way to bigger things. Roldan is asked about the Lucha Brothers trademark issues, says AAA has the right to defend their trademarks, notes they had many Pentagons before Pentagon Jr., and says they’re phenomenal wrestlers who will get over regardless of the name. Roldan is specifically asked about the idea of a new Pentagon and gives a firm response – there’s absolutely nothing to the story of Oni el Bendito becoming the new Pentagon Jr.; it’s completely false. Roldan allows the possibility that AAA may create a new Pentagon in a year or two, but it doesn’t sound like any firm plans to do so.

Dorian Roldan’s interview with Mas Lucha is briefer than usual. He’s asked about the lack of surprises in the press conference as in previous years. Roldan says it’s been an atypical year for AAA, one where they are missing some surprises but expect to have more at TripleMania itself. (That would include surprises showing up in the Copa and the Vmapiro match.) There’s talk about the sponsorship of the casket match and Vampiro’s retirement match. Dorian encourages people to be at TripleMania from the first minute because there will be surprises from the show’s start.

Murder Clown walks through the shot near the end of the Roldan interview, and a big brace on his hand is clearly visible. I have no idea how he’s going to climb out of a cage with that thing. Mas Lucha interviews Murder himself, who says it’s a fracture, but it won’t stop him from working his scheduled shows.

Latin Lover announced he’s taped a podcast with Konnan, which will appear on Monday night. This is timed to get AAA more attention on TripleMania week, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if there was some angle.

Former WWE Spanish language host Quetzalli Bulnes appeared at the TripleMania press conference. I didn’t pick it up because of the audio issues, but she asked a question as if she was media covering AAA show and Latin Lover asked her if she’d like to work with AAA. She’s worked with AAA prior, doing social media videos at last year’s TripleMania Mexico City, and presumably will do the same this year.  She’s asked about Negro Casas and other wrestlers at the end of the interview linked above, and Bulnes brings up how Octagon Jr. is always a trending topic. I’m not sure if he is, but definitely isn’t on the announced TripleMania card (and that remains mysterious.)

Space lists a start time of 9:30 for TripleMania, which means they’re skipping the first 90 minutes of the show. That’s normal. Their broadcast will probably start with the three-way tag match.

Lady Maravilla wrestled Mala Fama back in Arena San Juan a few weeks ago, and they seem to be bringing that idea here.

El Sol de La Laguna interviewed Hijo de Silver King about winning a title in IWRG. They also couldn’t figure out what the title’s name was, and they were going with the idea that he was the legit son of Silver King. I’m skeptical.

ELITE has a show on Sunday.

5) Laredo Kid vs Metalik
6) Pagano vs DMT AzulDemonio Infernal

Tickets are moving as poorly as ever. It’s unclear to me why they have so many sections open to start with; people will just be moved up. The last show was taped, with ELITE saying they’d put it online as a VOD in some fashion. They never did, of course, but footage of it has been used in promos for this show. Maybe they’ll tape this one, too, but that would mean no fancams (which would actually get posted).

ELITE is still putting out a press release with a mystery person in the main event, even at a press session with Demonio Infernal there to talk about being the mystery person in the main event.

Negro Casas, Laredo Kid, and Flammer are all working this show and then coming back in six days to work for AAA on TripleMania. Pagano’s probably involved with Vampiro on that show, too. I’m still surprised AAA is letting their wrestlers work this show, though I suspect it’s because they (rightfully) don’t consider ELITE as competition.

In an interview with Mas Lucha, Forneo confirms he’s an independent luchador. He doesn’t really talk about why he left CMLL, but is complementary to trainers Tony Salazar and Volador Jr. I thought he would’ve been a great Depredador, but that’s not to be. Forneo talks a bit about wanting to team/face his old Big Lucha opponents but also wanting to face everyone. It’s odd that ELITE would be adding additional matches on a show that’s not drawing, but everything with ELITE is odd.

Fuerza Guerrera, his daughter and ELITE director Ernesto Santillan visited the Atlante soccer train training facility.

Other Notes

Mano a Mano reports 1980s EMLL luchador Al Rojo Vivo (Jesus Olvera, 72) passed away Friday. I haven’t seen a cause of death but it must’ve been sudden; he was posting on his Facebook page this week. His biggest match was losing his mask to Aguila Solitario in Arena Coliseo in 1985. What I didn’t know until today is Al Rojo Vivo remasked a year or so after as “Kadafy”, partner of Arafath in Los Terroristas. I did know there were characters inspired by Yasser Arafat and Muammar Gaddafi; I didn’t realize it was this guy portraying one of them.

Penta is scheduled to a meet and greet tomorrow before a show in Queretaro. There are 100 tickets for the meet and greet. He may be asked the same question 100 times.

Puma King is teasing his match on the upcoming Lucha Libre Real show could be his last ever. This is incredibly hard to take seriously.

KAOZ says they’re running again on 09/29. That would be their first show in six months while they run angles in other promotions (and do title changes I can’t figure out).

It was almost notable how unotable it was for a women’s match to headline a CMLL show. It’s still uncommon, but it’s unusual. Any women’s title match would’ve been fifth or fourth on this card a few years ago. It’s too bad the match itself wasn’t great. They were very ambitious and just couldn’t make a lot of what they tried look as good as hoped. Tessa quiet nearly landed on her head on a doomsday device type dropkick spot; that was one where I’m not sure how they though it ever was going to go well.

Valiente looked better wrestling his old trainee Neon than he has in other matches, helped by them basically starting the match doing what must’ve been their old drills. Pelon Encapuchado is Fuego once again under his sponsored character (and the sponsor is back with CMLL again for a while.)

Not sure why they split the main event, though my guess is someone needed to be on early flight.

About a month ago, the Villanos fought pirate friends Barboza & Zandokan here. Both teams did post-match interviews, and got asked by the (non-CMLL) press if Barboza would be part of La Escudra with Zandokan and Los Villanos. The Villanos stated that Barboza could join the team only if he beat all of them in 1v1 matches. They were clearly just riffing, as luchadors often do in these press segments. Someone decided to run with the idea, at least for this week, and Barboza’s now got just two more wins to collect.

Last week’s Guadalajara show, with a whole bunch of guests from Torreon, was really good. I liked match three in particular, maybe because it was much better than I thought it’d be. I had not seen Lady Shadow since she was in Mexico City last year. Shadow in 2023 looked like she really needed more time before being on such a big stage. In 2024, Shadow looks great, like she’d be in the top half of the regular roster. One match is one match, but I hope she’s around again in October.

There is no CMLL Informa talent list. CMLL (accidentally?) revealed an episode a couple of weeks ago was taped and not live. Maybe they’re doing that for every episode, and they’ve decided to wait to announce who’s on the show until they’ve taped it (and made sure no one was missed it.)

This is a long shot, but if CMLL is doing the Night of Champions format as they’ve done the last few years (an all-title match show in September where the fans vote on the challengers), it probably needs to be announced soon—maybe tonight.

Lucha Tour announced they’ll have a meet and greet with Mansoor, Rocky Romero and Kyle Fletcher on 08/23.

Box y Lucha 3615 has the Aniversario on the top.

The CMLL summer camp for children is underway. The kids will have a presentation on the 08/18 (Sunday) Arena Mexico show.

  • 2024: Dark Cuervo, Dark Ozz, Cibernetico, Fiscal, Abismo Negro Jr., Psicosis II, Panic Clown, Dave the Clown and Murder Clown in a domed cage match

This year’s TripleMania is easily the weakest main event since AAA has started running this building. It’s really great personally for El Fiscal to be in the main event of TripleMania just months after debuting in the company, but it’s a real sign of weakness that AAA has to put him in the main event so quickly. Cibernetico’s the biggest name, and he’s lost his hair on this show prior. If Murder Clown loses his mask, I guess that’s bigger as Mascara 2000 Jr. losing his mask, but there won’t be the build behind it. Everyone else are guys who aren’t people who would come close to a TripleMania event at this point in their careers outside of desperation. AAA is just trying to bluff their way through a show by using the dome cage as the draw, and it’s entirely that gimmick that should get credit if they pull it off. This is a main event AAA would’ve done for one of the lesser TripleMania shows (or the Verano de Escandalo tier shows) in years past, and everything is getting bumped down a notch in 2024.

No one seemed to ask about Murder Clown’s partners saying he had a fractured arm.

That TripleMania main event was originally announced as twelve people. AAA didn’t acknowledge there were now only nine people in it. The Copa Bardahl opener was originally announced as twelve people as well. Now it’s fifteen. Perhaps AAA figured out some legends would have difficulties climbing out of that cage and made an adjustment. A normal wrestling company would acknowledged they changed the main event of their biggest show of the year.

The press conference was conducted unusually, where most of it was Dorian Roldan and Latin Lover interviewing the wrestlers (and putting them over a lot.) Roldan explained that no opponent will be announced for Vampiro’s match. He’ll instead face multiple opponents who won’t be revealed until we see them. The match will also be sponsored by funeral home Funerarias J. Garcia Lopez. This sounds less like a match in any traditional since and more like a Vampiro mini-movie. That’s probably for the best, and not just because a Vampiro match in 2024 is likely to be poor. “We’re going to let Vampiro do whatever he wants for about 15 minutes” is a better drawing card for curious onlookers than anything else they’ve got on this card. AAA was clearer this time out that this is Vampiro’s retirement specifically in Arena Ciudad de Mexico. It’ll also be his only second ever match in the building; he was in the 2019 Copa TripleMania.

Dorian Roldan spent some time explaining a “Dave Meltzer five star match”, and pushing the idea that they are very rare and they put together a match they think can get it. According to cagematches’ record keeping, Dave Meltzer has rated 15 matches five stars or higher this year. He rated 27 matches that highly last year. Two a month seems uncommon but not rare. Certaintly, getting a five star match used to mean huge things for a promotion and a wrestler, and it no longer has that same impact. In AAA’s case, one five star match will certainly help their image, but it’s not going to turn around their poor social media profile (and social media is the only place where people are really going to care about this.)

Two of this year 5+ star matches are in CMLL (Mascara Dorada/Templario and Hechicero/ZSJ), which may have been the insighting action. AAA has had 3 five stars matches this decade; two of them have involved Laredo Kid (versus Vikingo, w/Vikingo against the Lucha Brothers.) Getting Dave Meltzer to give a match an excellent rating has obviously been the idea of this match since it was just Riddle/Laredo. I’m not sure adding Komander actually brings AAA closer to that goal; it’s much rarer for a three way match to get that number. Meltzer did rate the fourway title match from last year’s TripleMania 4.5 stars, but I’d challenge you to remember who was actually in it without looking it up.

Komander appearing was a surprise. Komander won the Cruiserweight championship 11 months ago has never defended it on AAA TV, and rarely appears in AAA at all. This seems certain to be the end of his reign, though it leaves the winner of Riddle competing for a cruiserweight title while obviously not being a cruiserweight. It also suggests Laredo’s actually winning this, because he’s the only one of the three AAA can seem to get dates on. Konnan, on his podcast, had mentioned instructing Matt Riddle to sent in a video and a promo; none was shown during this press conference. Maybe they’ll turn up on social media later, but I’d have to assume they were meant for this show and didn’t get done.

Faby and Flammer were brought on to talk about their title match. AAA later stated that Tirantes wouldn’t be the referee for the match, in trying to portray that AAA was taking their only women’s title match of the year seriously. Dalys seconding Flammer while feuding with Faby Apache suggests she’ll either cost Faby the title or set up their title program right after. Roldan announced Psicosis I/Nicho el Millonario will go in the AAA Hall of Fame on the show. My hunch still is Psicosis II as the loser of the cage match, and it’d be interesting to have both those things on the same show. The press conference skipped over the three way tag match and the Alberto/Nemeth title match. There was also no hints about the Eye bit.

The show proper start at 8 pm Mexico City time. AAA said there’s a pre-show starting at 7 pm (without matches.) In Tijuana, FITE started to stream a pre-show an hour ahead of time but AAA didn’t seem to have any idea they were live for quite a while before doing the anthem, so I wouldn’t suggest you have to be there at 7. AAA solely focused on tickets sales and made little to no mention of the show airing on FITE or Space or any other TV outlet. I’m not even yet sure if it’s airing on Azteca this year. The FITE listing is up, though they haven’t updated the lineup.

In the Q&A segment, Latin Lover mentioned wrestlers for another promotion were told they could no longer go on his podcast. He seemed surprised at this, and he should not be. It was generally hard to hear the questionnaires, and so I didn’t get much out of the questions here, but there was a lot of discussion about how AAA’s definitely listening to all the comments people leave on social media. I wonder what they think of the mean memes. Maybe I’ll get more out of the individual interviews.

Notable missing names: Sam Adonis, Parker Boudreaux and QT Marshall, who’ve been treated as super important figures on the last two TripleManias this year. Mesias, Dark Espiritu and Dark Escoria are also nowhere to be seen. Konnan responded to criticism of the TripleMania Monterrey show in part by saying this was a three act story, they were building to Mexico City. Nemeth/Alberto is a two TripleMania story, starting in Monterrey, skipping Tijuana and finishing in Mexico City. There’s nothing else on that Monterrey show that had anything to do with this card. It was just the usual blah blah blah.

AAA wrestlers will appear at the Mexico City stop of the Gamergy video game festival on August 25th and August 26th. They’re running three match shows on Saturday and Sunday and some autograph signings before and during those days. The only thing that struck me as notable is Sunday’s show, which has a rare sighting of Kento without Takuma. He’s teaming up with Kuuaki and Nobu San instead.

Lucha Brothers

Fightul Select had an update on Fenix & Penta’s contract situation. The AEW story is they wanted to and were trying to re-sign the Lucha Brothers, but the Lucha Brothers kept putting off actually doing it. AEW eventually got the impression that Fenix and Penta had no interest in signing with AEW, and Konnan tweeting “what comes around goes around 2” seemed to confirm it. The first iteration of that Konnan post seemed to be out Stephanie Vaquer going to WWE, so these are two posts of Konnan publically taking credit for getting people away from AEW and to WWE. That obviously works out for Konnan, I’m not sure if it is good news for AAA.

Fightful does not say the Lucha Brothers have signed with WWE – and for good reason, they’re still under contract to AEW. WWE can’t legally sign them right now. Anyone in WWE saying they plan to do so would invite a lawsuit.

I did have some people reach out to me after Tuesday’s post and independently relay stories of Penta being cagey about fulfilling bookings he had agreed to later the year. These are ones that hadn’t been yet announced, and ones he’d would have normally no problems – unless he thought he might be going to WWE. That matches the behavior Fightful is reporting, and makes sense if he believes he’s going to WWE.

In true luchador fashion, Fenix did a very generic post about it.

The Pandemonium dad comes out of partial retirement to team with his sons.

Last Thursday’s show was a Lucha Libre Boom show. Originally, the main event was the Octagons, Caneks, Guerreras, and a mystery team. They changed the card before the show to Caneks, Guerreras, and LA Parks, with the promoter saying it was for reasons out of control. If CMLL blocked Ciclon Ramirez Jr. from working with their guys because he’s working Todo x el Todo shows, it would stand to reason CMLL encouraged Octagon to drop that booking if he wanted to keep working with them. The rest of the family teams have someone working on the first Todo x el Todo show. This may be a prominent issue for the next few months because – as we’ve seen with wrestlers getting pulled from Tijuana shows – wrestlers are often the last to figure out the rules and the first to be loudly upset about them.

Lucha Brothers reportedly to leave AEW and join WWE

Monday, WrestlePurists reported that AEW sources believe Fenix and Penta will leave the promotion when their contracts expire this year. Bryan Alvarez confirmed the report later that day. I have no information I can personally add to this story. Both wrestlers are still under contract to AEW, so this technically can not be a final decision. No one on the Lucha Brothers’ side can officially speak about going someplace until the AEW deal is done. The situation appears to be AEW staff being told to stop pitching ideas for these guys – the WrestlePurists report mentions the Lucha Brothers were pulled from a trios title match at All In – and then putting together why they were being told to stop. There was no tease or build of a Lucha Brothers’ trios title match on AEW TV recently; it doesn’t seem like that idea got the idea was far enough along to get on screen. It’s unclear if this means the Lucha Brothers are done in AEW completely or will just be used for one-off appearances. As it stands now, their final appearance was the July 17th match against Private Party on Rampage.

The only possible destination for the Lucha Brothers guys is the WWE. CMLL will not come close to any offer WWE or AEW can make, and they’ve expressed no desire to take less money to wrestle in Mexico full-time. In his report, Bryan Alvarez indicates WWE is the landing spot. Lucha Libre Online reported WWE had an interest in signing them earlier this year. It was always a question of how much interest went the other way. Andrade and Stephanie Vaquer went to WWE in large part because they really wanted to be in that place. Penta and Fenix have talked complimentary about WWE over the years, but they’ve never portrayed it as a place they had to go as part of their career. Penta talked about treating his next contract as the last big one of his career and wanting to make the most of it. Penta probably makes the most money of the two – he’s taking a lot of outside bookings – and he’s still living in the Mexico City area and gets flown into the US into the show, unlike WWE wrestlers. WWE’s either had to offer so much over the top that it’s worth Penta’s time to relocate to the US, or they’ve waived the relocation requirement. Either way, WWE/TKO must’ve offered a very strong deal when they’ve seemingly been reluctant to do so recently. That’s positive news for all wrestlers.

If WWE is ever going to make a serious push into Latin America, they’ve got the best guys to do it: Rey Mysterio Jr. and the Lucha Brothers. Everyone saw what the Lucha Brothers meant as a special attraction with their appearance in Arena Mexico. WWE would want to strike while the novelty of seeing the Lucha Brothers with the WWE (or NXT) logo is still strong. It’s tough to spin up something meaningful in just a few months, but the pieces aren’t going to always fall in place like this – they’ve got everything they need for a strong Mexican PPV event except a location. A stronger Latin America push would also explain why WWE/TKO would be willing to go over the top for these two. That sort of move would have ramifications for the existing groups. (To be clear, no one is reporting that WWE is actually making a move to Latin America; this is just reasonable speculation.)

The Lucha Brothers leaving AEW to WWE is significant reputational damage to AEW. The Lucha Brothers were founding AEW wrestlers who embodied the alternative wrestling spirit the promotion started around. WWE signing Fenix & Penta is another signal about how the differences between those two companies have shrunk and how AEW’s lost part of what was their big edge. They were also forever more popular than their push – tag team title challengers who’d occasionally win the titles – and a lot of their fans are going to feel like AEW never got the most out of them in their time there. Fenix was the only one of the two to win a singles title – which appeared to be an unplanned victory and one ending quickly due to injuries – and neither was used as much as a big PPV singles title challenger. The Lucha Brothers had great moments in AEW and really memorable title wins, but they were always used as guys who would work with the top performers but not be the top performers themselves. A long-term Lucha Brothers might look questionable on an accounting actuarial table. Fenix has missed a lot of time in recent years with injuries and other maladies; Penta wrestles the same match 95% of the time; the first years of them will be more valuable than the last few years, no matter how long they’re signed. The Lucha Brothers may create space for a Hologram, Mortos, or someone else (even a non-Mexican) to get more creative focus and perhaps break through the ceiling they’ve been trapped under in AEW. There are just very few logical arguments anyone can make that will mitigate the emotional impact of AEW losing two very popular wrestlers who’ve been there in the beginning.

WWE historically has struggled to make use of lucha libre style wrestlers outside of Rey Mysterio Jr. Their current group includes Dragon Lee, who has struggled to find a full-time role since coming to the main roster, and a host of others stuck in secondary factions. It still is the best time in WWE history for a Mexican wrestler to come in – they were doomed under Vince McMahon’s creative leadership. I believe Fenix and Penta will be less bothered by lackluster creative if they’re still being paid great – if they’re around and not doing much in a Nakamura-like fashion, they’ll survive – but I’m sure WWE will go strong with them at first. WWE will want to justify their decision to jump and their own decision to pay them big money. WWE has changed in many ways, but the best bet that a wrestler will be pushed as a big star is if they’re already getting paid like one.

Penta and Fenix’s going to WWE will have minimal direct effect on the Mexican promotions (outside of WWE possibly coming in stronger). There was definitely more mileage for them in CMLL, but they have plenty of other options. Penta and Fenix both withdrew from AAA. Fenix stopped working in Mexico years ago. Penta still works a fair bit of shows, with mixed results. Promoters will just move to another indie name, probably with slightly worse results.

The Lucha Brothers’ situation closely mirrors the Andrade one. He finally returned to CMLL as part of an AEW deal. He seemed to have fun, and then he immediately left for WWE. If The Beast Mortos/Semental ever asks AEW for a chance to return to Arena Mexico, I guess AEW should be concerned. More seriously, this is a small victory for Konnan, who was clearly unhappy about two of his long-time proteges no longer working at AAA and instead working for CMLL. Those two going to WWE will end that situation and may add a couple more positive voices to any deal between AAA and WWE. It’s not good news for Konnan if this leads WWE to have a stronger presence in Latin America, but otherwise, this is exactly what he would’ve wanted.

Penta is scheduled to wrestle Friday night in Arena Queretaro, a show that’s undergone many changes because of the currently fraught AAA/Penta relationship. Mas Lucha may be covering that show; perhaps Penta will speak about this situation to them.

16:21. 1st defense.

The MJF/Templario segment was the most recent AAA feeling match CMLL’s run in a long time. It may have been more AAA than most of AAA’s own output this year. It had the US flag waving ugly American. It had the pre-match promo to antagonize the fans, in case they couldn’t figure out the American guy was a rudo. It had that American pushing the racism line significantly farther than they’d be comfortable doing on their own television show. It had the translation from English to Spanish, with Rocky Romero standing in for Hugo Savonvich. It had the Mexican babyface valiantly fighting for his country and then failing. There were only two differences in how AAA would run it. One was that there was no cheating involved in the finish – AAA would have the rudo cheat to maximize the heat, while CMLL was apparently fine with MJF hitting his two finishers to win. The other is Konnan wasn’t involved, a heel antagonizing the fans, pushing the limits of acceptable speech to get heat, and he obviously would’ve been part of it one way or another in AAA.

The flag-waving rudo is not foreign to CMLL. Sam Adonis was doing the same bit when he was in CMLL. Rocky Romero has done things similarly, and there’s always a lot of nation-on-nation trash talk to build to the Men’s Gran Prix. (The women tend to be nicer.) But – Rocky’s treated like a scamp, while MJF has more of an edge. And the CMLL English-speaking fanbase has turned over a lot since Adonis was a CMLL wrestler; the MJF bit is something they’re only used to getting from AAA. The international fanbase for CMLL – and let’s be clear, it’s not huge – includes people who gravitate to CMLL to get away from the style of professional wrestling that MJF believes in. MJF is showing up in CMLL and doing his most MJF performance, which understandably put off a lot of regular international fans.

Most Mexican fans didn’t seem to mind MJF’s comments. I didn’t have time for a deep search here, nor do I expect to be able to accurately poll everyone’s feelings, but the general vibe was the “oh, he’s really good at talking.” Mexican culture is more politically incorrect and more willing to shrug off comments as things said by performers and not really true words. They booed MJF strongly during the match, and they would’ve tried to get a selfie with him after had it been possible. MJF’s comments would’ve required a promotional apology had they been said on TBS, but there’s no real harm to CMLL over them in Mexico – just like there wasn’t any backlash over Sam Adonis’s comments or QT Marshall’s comments or FTR’s comments. It’s just a wacky, colorful foreign wrestling speech to the home fans.

(The problem Mexican fans had with MJF’s promo was not what MJF said. It was that Rocky Romero’s translation was way off and inaccurate. Not even in a self-censoring way, Rocky just wasn’t getting the right words across at times. It appeared Rocky didn’t know what MJF would say ahead of time, he was live translating, and live translating ain’t easy. Rocky himself winked at his mishaps in their post match promo.)

The concern I have about the bit is that it is AAA-related PSTD. Templario, one of CMLL’s top guys, lost clean to an evil outsider, and there was no indication he’d ever get revenge. That feels like it’s happened a dozen times in AAA in the last five years. This match seems to have happened primarily so AEW could air a 49-second video package about it as a minor plot point in another feud. This is not AAA, and even though it’s not the same relationship as AEW, maybe “waiting for it to play it” holds more value with CMLL this time. CMLL is also probably getting a clean in the middle Chris Jericho loss about six weeks from now, which the people who actually run the promotion will trade for a Templario loss every single day. Any wrestling company relationship is about giving and taking and getting better business for both, and CMLL is ending up with better business out of this. I’m certain they’re not as bothered about this one as I am.

MJF talked for about four minutes before the match. I can recall that happening prior in CMLL; that’s another thing that’s more AAA. If he had been a full-time CMLL wrestler, MJF would’ve been suspended or at least given a stern talking-to for unauthorized dancing with the edecanes, posing on top of the stage at the end of the show, and interacting directly with individual fans, among other CMLL secret rules. Such are the advantages of being a special guest. If you give credit for MJF being a great heel wrestler, it’s worth keeping in mind he’s got incredible leeway. The rules are just different for an MJF.

The match itself was close to standard CMLL style. MJF went after Templario’s legs early, Templario turned it around and worked on MJF’s legs, neither of it mattered much in the end. MJF kicked out of most (though not all) of Templario’s biggest moves, then his his jumping Canadian Destroyer and brainbuster for the clean win. MJF was obviously winning for people keeping with AEW TV – the Templario title defense wasn’t mentioned in advance there – but most CMLL fans do not, and I think they got into at least the potential of a title change.

Mascara Dorada/Volador versus PAC/Romero was Great, an action match that seemed to flow better – or at least didn’t get overwhelmed by the crowd reaction. There’s been Arena Mexico matches that meant more, and Volador was not fully invested – the slingshot headscissors are always the tell – but Mascara Dorada looked great, and the rudos were giving him plenty of chances to shine.

Valiente/Esfinge was not much. I came into the match thinking that Valiente would definitely lose his mask if he won the title; so is the way CMLL usually books these things. Valiente didn’t win the title, but I felt no safer about his mask. He’s just not the same guy after returning from knee surgery, he was declining before, he’s far older than most people realize, and he hasn’t been able to find something extra or new on the rudo side. He’s just a ball of rage who keeps unmasking people, maybe as angry about his current state as anything Esfinge has done. He’s got a few weeks to figure it out, but this seems like the time to cash in. The trios match was a much more heated version of the same thing. Euforia’s the opposite of Valiente, someone who’s taken this chance and coming out looking like a stronger personality every week. He’s done better work in the ring against flying tecnicos, but it’s the best character work I can remember.

I’m told this Friday night show was a sell-out. And yet, it also had fewer tickets sold than last week’s sell-out—upper-level sections were visibly vacant as the main event was going on. Those are all general admission areas, and the explanation I was given is that CMLL just didn’t put those tickets on sale—or at least didn’t offer enough tickets to fill up those sections, so they were never opened.

At any rate, MJF can and will credit himself with selling out Arena Mexico. I racked my brain thinking of other people who might have sold out Arena Mexico in their debut, and it’s hard to come up with people who’d even fit – CMLL never puts new people in their main events as a matter of practice, so most of the biggest were working the middle of the card (or lower if their EMLL career before they were stars.) It would have to be someone who was already a big enough star in another promotion that CMLL would automatically put them in the main event and who didn’t wrestle in CMLL (or EMLL) earlier in their career. The list is small there. Mil Mascara technically debuted in a main event, but it was actually the finals of an eight-team tournament, and I get the sense it didn’t draw anything special. Cibernetico’s Arena Mexico debut was in the main event, but on one of those wacky Lucha Libre Elite shows that never drew. Penta debuted in the main event, and my recollection is that it had a good crowd but not as good as Friday night. (Fenix debuts in a semi-main on a different show.) PAC from last week would count. Fletcher didn’t draw anything too notable. The only name I could come up with, as far as people who debuted in Arena Mexico in a main event in front of a huge crowd, was Gronda.

On these Sunday shows: Last week, I recorded all of Friday night and Saturday to see if AMX moved the first airing of the show there. No luck. This week, I tried Thursday night and all of Friday, and didn’t find it again. They are still airing the show on Sundays, but the stream’s having issues. I got part of the Xelhua trios from 07/21, but the third fall is just gone. That’s why it was nice to have two airings, in case something went wrong. I’ll try to just record the whole week in case it turns up. It’d be nicer if CMLL had just made these available.

Like old times, a Saturday lineup was posted on Monday afternoon. Sure, it’s not a good lineup, but you can only ask for so much.

CMLL will eventually fill Stephanie Vaquer’s spot with someone new. It’s not as if they will bring someone to replace Vaquer at her level, but just to have the same number of people for scheduling purposes. (They’re also still missing Tabata, although she hadn’t appeared all that much before she needed elbow surgery.) Magia Azul is making her first appearance since April. Candela is a Mexico City-based luchadora who’s appeared in Guadalajara twice – including this coming Tuesday – and this is the first time she’s appeared in Mexico City at all. This could also be updating the emergency substitute call list, though Dr. Landru teased there was a CMLL women’s announcement coming just seconds before this lineup was posted.

CMLL (SUN) 08/11/2024 Arena México

6) Esfinge, Hechicero, Último Guerrero vs Averno, Euforia, Valiente [Relevos Increíbles]

Match 3 is the big news. Hijo del Pantera and Cobarde Jr. were teased earlier in the day, though I don’t think anyone figured it out. Pantera is back after his good performance on the Felino show. Cobarde – who sometimes goes by Cobarde NG or Hijo del Cobarde – is a Texas based wrestler who’s generally been more in the AAA orbit. (You may vaguely remember his brother, who normally wrestles as El Dragon, getting hurt while wrestling as a Marvel character a couple of TripleManias ago. They often team, and it’s possible Cobarde was quietly working for AAA as a Marvel character too.) Cobarde’s family has history with CMLL. The original Cobrade was a star in the 70s, before passing away at an early age due to a battle with cancer. This Cobrade lost his mask to Fishman in Arena Mexico, and so is one of the masks memorialized in the mural they have at the front of the building. His brother, who had been wrestling as El Imposter, took over the Cobarde name in memory of his brother and later ended up as one of the Coco Rojos in AAA. The new Cobarde is the son of this second Cobarde. He’s always been alright and in a company so attached to history – everyone in that match is carrying on someone else’s mask – it fits that they’d give him a shot.

That emoji bit this morning did get me thinking back to the emoji signaling MJF’s appearance: an hourglass, a globe, and a USA flag. The globe is the signifier that the wrestler is outside

The US flag didn’t make sense when CMLL did it – MJF had not yet become the AEW International Champ, much less changed into the American title and taken on his current super patriot aspect. It obviously makes a lot more sense after that character twist. Maybe AEW indicated CMLL that was coming.

Going back to the Sunday card, note that the Micro Gemelo Diablos are back after a six week break. Perhaps teaming team up with KeMaltio will solve the apparent issues between them and him.

NJPW announced Virus & Hechicero will challenge TMDK’s Shane Haste & Michael Nicholls for the NJPW Strong Tag Team Championship. Haste & Nicholls are also the IWGP Tag Team champs, NJPW’s on a kick to keep the Strong titles only on the Strong shows for now, and it’s not completely impossible the CMLL team wins to help facilitate that. Not completely impossible is relatively strong chances for CMLL wrestlers competing for an NJPW title. Hechicero and Virus seem less likely to get picked up by WWE than other recent CMLL NJPW champions.

Dark Panther, Brillante Jr., Star Black, and Fugaz appeared at Spartan Race Mexico.

Fresero Jr.’s return to AAA. Murder Clown was last left in the cage.

AAA announced that the losing team from the Verano de Escandalo cage match would advance to the TripleMania cage match and that telegraphed the finish. The Psycho Circus abruptly started feuding with the Vipers on the previous taping. The Vipers were already in the TripleMania cage, so the Psychos were sure to join them. The cage match was a nothing match, as all AAA cage matches are – the only booking was people coming back in the cage to help their friends leave. The result is a TripleMania main event resembling CMLL at their most cynical. Cibernetico is a TripleMania main event star biggest. Maybe there are arguments that a Murder Clown or Psicosis or a Dark Ozz might fit with the right opponents – or at least be as big of names as Valiente and Esfinge. What are Dark Cuervo, Panic Clown, and El Fiscal doing in a TripleMania main event? I’ll hold off on going harder on this because there are still three more names to be announced, but it’s currently in the argument for the weakest TripleMania main event since they moved to Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

The Psycho Clown participants in the cage match may change; Mas Lucha’s post-match interview with Dave and Panic mentions Murder Clown possibly fractured his arm in the match. He obviously will not be wrestling in two weeks.

Fresero Jr. was in the match. He did nothing remarkable, nor did he seem particularly over. I’m including this sentence here just to remember it happened at all because the only noteworthy bit was the items he brought to the ring to pay tribute to both his mother and father before the match. I can’t think of much he did in the match.

The trios match was the usual AAA main event trios style. The tecnicos leaving La Secta to get destroyed was funny.

I thought Belcegor stood out the most in the four-way match. It was the best of the three, though the second half of the match was a lot of slowly setting up spots and nothing much between them. Drago seems to be less exciting than he was six months ago, and La Hermandad is a group of friends who dress similarly, rarely actually team, and lose singles matches all the time. (They’re basically a lower-level AEW faction.) New Taurus would’ve been so much better off with a year of getting used to wrestling in AAA before taking on that gimmick, but putting him under that character quickly appeared to be a decision made out of anger and not in the best interests of the wrestling they’re trying to present. AAA’s doing fine, there’s no cost in doing business that way.

A mysterious Eye guy walked behind the announcers as they were talking between matches, and the eye cut off the end of the broadcast. AAA has given no indication of where they’re going with any of this or why anyone should care. It should finally go somewhere on TripleMania Mexico City, but perhaps that’s too optimistic for the glacial speed of anything getting done in AAA.

Faby Apache getting the title shot was the expected outcome; AAA doesn’t trust these other luchadoras to have a singles match. (And they still have the Faby/Dalys feud to happen.) Havok and Crazzy Steve winning the tag title match is random. There may be another AAA/TNA Ultraclash coming later this year – Konnan responded to someone on Twitter affirming that Kazarian would be back in Mexico at some point this year – and so maybe that title match is intended for that show.

Mas Lucha has an interview with Chris Stone Jr., who is said to have wrestled as Bello Stone on this show. (His grandfather wrestled as Bello Greco.) It’s not said who he replaced. I honestly didn’t search too hard to figure out that match.

Verano de Escandalo was said to be a sellout, and it looked that way in the shows. This building has a capacity of 5,000, so that’s a nice number. Aguascalientes is always a good stop for AAA. Notably, the local promoter ran bigger venues in past years—a 7,000-seater last year and an 8,000-seater in 2022. I’m unsure why they picked the smaller venue this time around; maybe it had something to do with the cage?

While I’m on the topic of attendance, the promoters of the 09/07 Torreon AAA TV taping said the building is also a 5,000-seater, and they plan to sell it out. They also promoted the 03/09 Saltillo show and said that did sell out at 5,000.

The live broadcast returned about five seconds before the announcers got their cue on most of the breaks, so we got to hear them hype up the crowd before they came in. AAA struggles with this sort of stuff on live production. Hugo Savonvich was not on the show once again. Konnan’s segment has a podcast interview with Hugo before Verano de Escandalo (though airing after), where Konnan asks Hugo if he’s working the show, and Hugo informs him he’s not – he’s only working TripleMania and two other dates the rest of the year. “I’m out of a lot of dates,” Hugo says he’s been told it’s a money situation. Konnan explains, “Without getting into details, we’re [AAA] in a transitory period.” There are other comments on the podcast about how great AAA business is doing, with all the tickets sold, and a suggestion that TripleMania Mexico City tickets are selling out faster than ever. If you believe Konnan is being completely honest about AAA business metrics and they’re doing great, it makes it even more concerning that they’re making cutbacks. If you’re running at a loss when you’re selling out buildings, how does this business even work?

Here’s what I think is happening, as clearly as I can make it: AAA poured a lot of money into Luchatitlan, it failed, and now AAA’s got a big hole to fill. (Maybe it’s something else, but that’s the biggest money hole I can come up with.) AAA’s making money on their live events, but they’re not enough money to fill that hole and not as fast as it needs to get filled, so cutbacks have to be made to prevent the hole from getting bigger. Using Jesus Zuniga instead of flying in Hugo from New York is one. Perhaps not booking world champion Nic Nemeth outside TripleManias is another, and maybe it’s worth looking at some of the other talent decisions (and main events of TripleManias) as related.

Konnan talking about a “transitory period” means Konnan has been told there’s a big solution coming to fix it. Back in June, Dorian Roldan talked about possibly making a private capital deal for AAA, which would mean outsider investors pouring money into the company. The goal would be enough to pour enough to fill up that hole so the wrestling income can be spent back on wrestling things again, like flying in Hugo to call shows. Whatever you think of Hugo, AAA loves him, and cutting his dates isn’t about any issues they have with him—Konnan makes that clear in the interview. The tradeoff – and perhaps a reason why this has been a rumor all year and not something that’s been acted upon – is that there’s no free money. AAA has to give up something to outside investors to make it worthwhile, and maybe both sides haven’t figured out the parameters to make it work. Konnan saying it’s a transitory period means he believes it’s going to be temporary cutbacks, though Hugo saying he lost a bunch of dates through the rest of the year suggests “temporary” is going to linger for a while.

(I can’t believe they left that bit in the podcast, but I appreciate the insight)

Hugo is meanwhile working on getting lucha libre in Panama and Costa Rica. He mentions that they haven’t returned to Chile because of high taxes and because the people there (and Peru) are trying to get a WWE show. Konnan pushed the idea that AAA is now focusing on people who don’t have US commitments, feeling not being able to get consistent dates on those people was the problem with their storylines. This is in between hyping TripleMania matches built around Nic Nemeth and Matt Riddle.

Konnan and Hugo have a discussion about the Unimas show (though no one remembers to say Unimas) – Konnan thought the first episode of that TV show sucked, and he and Hugo are part of the group sending recommendations. The Unimas show is slightly different than the Space one, but it’s close enough that I wonder if they haven’t been watching their TV regularly and are only now seeing what it’s like weekly since it’s airing in the US.

I expect AAA to hold a TripleMania press conference this week, but I have not heard a date mentioned yet.

Many names from Verano de Escandalo ended up in Tijuana the next night for an AAA EMW show. That show tanked; it’s the most empty I’ve seen an EMW or The Crash show in the Auditorio in a long time. Both promotions have suffered since TripleMania Tijuana. I don’t recall them being hurt nearly as badly after previous TripleMania Tijuana shows, and this year’s was particularly built around building up local feuds.  That seems to have backfired. The other missing piece is TripleMania Tijuana, which had Vampiro as his last match in Tijuana. Vampiro continued to do really good business elsewhere on his retirement tour, and he was the most popular guy at Verano de Escandaldo. At some point, Vampiro will run out of locations to have his last match ever in, and I can’t help but be curious to see how it goes for AAA after that fact. (Or how AAA figures out a way to keep him around.) This is going to make me sound like an insane person – and let’s be honest, I probably am one – but Vampiro should be given some consideration as a wrestling MVP candidate if you’re a person who votes for MVP strictly on business reasons. By “given some consideration”, I mean a top 10 guy in the world, maybe top 3 in Mexico – Mistico would still be ahead of him, and so would be others. Still, Vampiro’s been a consistent and strong draw ever since this retirement tour started, and there’s now a difference between when Vampirio is on these shows and when he’s not. You can vote for Vampiro for any other reasons besides business; his matches are all bad, but he’s made AAA some useful money this year. Clearly they need it.

Psycho Circus and Mesias are wrestling in Puerto Rico on 10/22.

There were three recaps of this show. All of them called the main event title a different name. It was truly an important championship. The two title matches were bloody and mask-ripping.

Fray Tormenta is battling glaucoma. He can’t see anymore, but doctors believe it’s possible to fix the situation. There was a benefit show for him Saturday in Arena Rey Bucanero and Tormenta thanked Salvador Lutteroth for allowing his wrestlers to participate.

Wisin el Perro got noticed by the AP. Wisin started a public service mascot for Mexico City but he (or the person in the mascot outfit) has been picking up bookings around Mexico lately.

There was a story last week about Penta and Fenix securing a lot of new US trademarks. Fenix is looking to get Fuego, Rey Fuego and King Fuego. Penta filed for both variations of Cero Miedo and Zero Miedo as well as AN!MO. My assumption is that’s related to them running into problems with their names last Friday; they want to have non-Penta and non-Fenix options if AAA tries to fight them over it in the US as they’ve apparently done in Mexico. (And better ones than King and Lucha Brother.) I don’t think it has to do with them possibly signing with WWE – that would come later and would come with some WWE involvement. However, I didn’t see any trademarks filed for these names in the Mexico trademark database as of yet.

The 08/16 Lucha Libre Real teased a mystery luchador in their Felino 40th Anniversary show, the tease was of Puma King, Puma implied he wasn’t cleared medically to wrestle, Lucha Libre Real revealed the mystery person was – Puma King. I dunno. Ciclon Ramirez Jr. is no longer on that card, which he says is due to CMLL blocking him from working on the same show as their wrestlers. He doesn’t say why they blocked him; my guess is people working the El Hijo del Santo Todo x el Todo shows are state enemies. Ciclon Ramirez mentions he trained in CMLL’s school for seven years – he never debuted.

If all TxT wrestlers are blocked from working CMLL, Fuerza Guerrera will not be allowed there for now. Solar I also appeared in Legends shows last year. I thought IWRG’s Shamila could end up in CMLL but obviously, she must believe differently if she’s working those shows.

In a similar story, CMLL told a Monterrey area promoter that Ultimo Guerrero would not wrestle local El Mafioso on Saturday. El Mafioso also wrestles as “El Lider” on AAA cards in the Showcetner, including some televised matches. Mafioso/Lider believed he was too under the radar to get blocked, and found out differently.

ELITE announced Demonio Infernal as the mystery person facing DMT Azul and Pagano in the main event of their 08/11 show. I can only believe Demonio Infernal was not the original plan because I’m not sure why they’d make that a mystery.

CMLL Aniversario four way mask match set, MJF/Templario and Verano de Escandalo tonight, Mistico/Collision

CMLL

The CMLL Aniversario main event is set. On 09/13, Hechicero, Euforia, Esfinge, and Valiente will compete in a four-way mask match.

CMLL will use the same rule set as on Homenaje a Dos Leyendas for the minis mask match: the first two people pinned are eliminated from the match, and the final two will have a mask versus mask match. This is not how other promotions would do a four-way match, but it fits CMLL’s philosophies. Everyone else treats this as a punishment situation, and the least of the four gets punished by being unmasked. CMLL treats it as a reward – winning a mask match in Arena Mexico is the greatest possible achievement in CMLL’s mindset – so a wrestler must fight and earn that win. The traditional structure rewards the 3rd best wrestler for being better than the 4th best one, and the CMLL set tries to reward the best wrestler for defeating the second-best one.

Still, it’s lucha libre, so the topic I’m foremost focused on is which one of these four wrestlers is most likely to be unmasked. It’s not as certain as most years. Hechicero seems the least likely; he’s making progress internationally, and it doesn’t seem like a great time for a character change. I rule out Hechiero losing. Esfinge is kinda pushed as a good-looking guy and would probably survive an unmasking fine, but he also has a cool mask, and he’s younger than most people who get unmasked. I think it’s unlikely Esfinge loses but it wouldn’t stun me like a Hechicero loss. Euforia is more the usual model, an older rudo who never gets pushed at a real main event level and can probably do the same character without a mask. (Euforia also has great “losing person delivers such a good performance that they end up more over than the winner” potential.) I wonder if CMLL would be concerned about having so few masked rudos that they’d hold off on Euforia. He’s a reasonable choice. Valiente is, as well. He was already slowing down before his serious knee injury, and he was slipping down the depth chart before making this switch to a rudo side. Valiente losing nearly a year with injury probably gives him a clearer perspective on how little time might be left for him at a high level in wrestling, and he’s the one most likely to want to job at an offer of a big payoff. I rate the overall chances as Valiente most likely to lose, Euforia a bit behind him, and Esfinge much less likely.

Side note 1: Of the four, Esfinge seems the most likely winner, though Hechicero seems not far after him – especially if he ends up with his old partner/rival Euforia.

Side note 2: Salvador Lutteroth was part of the contract signing ceremony – for no real reason. He was at most overseeing it, in the role that would’ve been done by Panico or Jose Luis Feliciano in the past era. Lutteroth is in the Arena Mexico ring for a presentation at least once a month too; his public profile is increasing, and now very much the opposite of Paco Alonso’s behavior in the same role. I’m not sure one is tactic is really better than other but it’s worth noting that change.

CMLL (FRI) 08/02/2024 Arena México
1) Infarto & Retro vs Hunter & Xelhua [Relevos Increíbles]
2) Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa vs Apocalipsis, Cholo, Disturbio
3) Hechicero, Magnus, Rugido vs Averno, Euforia, Soberano Jr.
4) Esfinge © vs Valiente [MEX LH]
5th defense
5) Máscara Dorada & Volador Jr. vs PAC & Rocky Romero
6) MJF © vs Templario [AEW AMERICAN]

MJF battles one of his five #1 contenders in the main event. The semi-main should set up something for 08/09. (And then 08/16 is when some of the Gran Prix wrestlers are turning up, so everything stays busy.) Valiente’s odds of losing his mask go up if he wins the title in match four.

PAC and MJF did the now standard Friday mid-day interview session for AEW talent. They were both heavily into character, which is what actually works best in that setting and with that press. (People actually at the press conference may disagree.) PAC didn’t want to be there and hated everyone, but he did seem to point out his feud with Mascara Dorada (and not Volador, as he left last week). MJF also brought up Dorada (or maybe Mascarita Dorada?) as a possible opponent, though it was clear he wanted a Mistico match most of all. MJF set it up that it’s a win for Templario if MJF has to work for it – or cheat with the ring – which usefully gives Templario a way to get something out of a title match where he’s definitely not winning the title.

I guess they’re probably going to do this same bit with Jericho in six weeks, though he’s a better guy for after the fact – especially given how much he likes to talk about behind-the-scenes stuff.

CMLL (SAT) 08/03/2024 Arena Coliseo
1) Galaxy, Shockercito, Último Dragóncito vs Full Metal, Mercurio, Pequeño Polvora
2) Kira, La Vaquerita, Skadi vs Amapola, Hera, Metálica
3) Futuro, Hombre Bala Jr., Max Star vs Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus
4) Atlantis, Blue Panther, Panterita del Ring vs Felino, Felino Jr., Rey Bucanero
5) Valiente vs Hechicero [lightning]
6) Templario, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Gran Guerrero, Stuka Jr.

Hechicero gets another singles match in Arena Coliseo; this one probably won’t end cleanly.

Mistico wrestled on the AEW Collision tapings on Thursday. That’ll air on Saturday. I’m not writing who he’s facing because I’m writing this paragraph Wednesday afternoon, and even though he’s clearly there to wrestle, AEW has not announced a match or that Mistico will be at the show at all. I was harsh on AEW for not announcing Mistico as appearing in Los Angeles when he was a surprise for the Casino Rumble, and others pushed back that it did make it more fun to have Mistico kept a surprise. I don’t think AEW is doing a Casino Rumble on Collision so I feel like they should’ve tried to sell a few tickets this time.

CMLL (SUN) 08/04/2024 Arena México
1) Angelito, Kaligua, Pequeño Magía vs Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito

3) Capitán Suicida, El Audaz, Volcano vs Kráneo, Okumura, Vegas
4) Blue Panther Jr., Fugaz, Panterita del Ring vs Akuma, Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II
5) Atlantis, Dark Panther, Star Black vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Gran Guerrero, Zandokan Jr.
6) Esfinge, Templario, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Euforia, Terrible

It will feel like they’re doing one part of the Aniversario feud on every show from now until 09/13. That main event has the (dropped?) Volador/Averno feud too.

CMLL (MON) 08/05/2024 Arena Puebla
1) Astro, Asturiano, Black Tiger vs Espíritu Maligno, King Jaguar, Sombra Diabólika
2) Astoreth, Kira, Skadi vs Hera, Lady Amazona, Olympia
3) Capitán Suicida, El Audaz, Meyer vs Dark Magic, Espanto Jr., Raider
4) Flip Gordon, Pegasso, Stigma vs Hijo del Villano III, Sagrado, Villano III Jr.
5) Star Black © vs Último Guerrero [MEX HEAVY]
fourth defense
6) Místico vs Magnus

They’re going for another sell out. I mentioned Wednesday how times have changed and Ultimo Guerrero is at the point of his career where he’s just losing this sort of title match (though Star Black is a peg lower than the guys he normally loses to.) The other thing that’s changed is that I was so tired of seeing formulaic Ultimo Guerrero singles matches seven or eight years ago and CMLL’s pulled back so far on them that I’m actually looking forward to that one.

CMLL (TUE) 08/06/2024 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Ángel Oriental, Prince Dragó, Último Ángel vs Rav, Shezmu, Temerario
2) Adira, Dulce Kitty, Náutica, Zorha vs Candela, Hatanna, Nexy, Valkiria
3) Leo, Omar Brunetti, Vaquero Jr. vs Arlequín, Draego, Persa
4) Barboza vs Hijo del Villano III [lightning]
5) Atlantis & Panterita del Ring vs Nitro & Satánico
6) Máscara Dorada, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Stuka Jr., Último Guerrero

A rare team up of all three Los Guerreros.

Informa had a bunch of additional upcoming announcements, some well into the future.

  • the 08/11 (Sunday) card will have a Depredadores versus Divinos Laguneros match
    • Volador also asked for a cibernetico to determine a new member of Los Depredadores.
  • Announced in a press statement later, the CMLL Women’s Universal tournament will occur over three weeks. There will be tournaments on 10/04 and 10/11 and the final on 10/18
  • The Women’s Gran Prix will take place on 10/25. Like the men, it will be 10 versus 10.
    • Tessa Blanchard is the first person on Team World
      • La Catalina and Zeuxis were not yet announced, but will obviously be on Team World. Persephone probably will be too, just with the small chance they may move her to Team Mexico depending on how the numbers work out. That’d leave six spots for women from AEW, ROH, NJPW Strong or Japan.
    • If Mercedes Mone is going to wrestle in Arena Mexico, the Gran Prix would be a logical time for her to arrive.
  • The Rey del Inframundo competition is getting re-worked
    • There will be eight man qualifying cibernetico in Puebla (10/28), Arena Mexico (10/29) and Guadalajara (10/30). The three winners and 2023 champion Barbaro Cavernario will have a four way match on 11/01 to determine the 2024 champ. Those Puebla and Guadalajara shows will be Dia del Muertos themed, just like the Arena Mexico shows.
  • There will also be an Arena Coliseo Dia de Muertos show on 11/02, and the “everyone gets to wear their old mask” show on 11/03

CMLL will work with the Food Bank Network and other companies for a special show in Arena Mexico on 09/18, “Lucha contra el Hambre.” (That’s a Wednesday.)

CMLL (WED) 09/18/2024 Arena México
1) Kaligua, Shockercito, Último Dragóncito vs Mercurio, Pequeño Polvora, Pierrothito
2) Brillante Jr., Futuro, Max Star vs Capitán Suicida, Diamond, El Audaz
3) Zeuxis vs Reina Isis
4) Fuego, Star Jr., Titán vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Dragón Rojo Jr., Terrible
5) Atlantis Jr., Máscara Dorada, Místico vs Averno, Templario, Último Guerrero

The goal of this campaign is to get people and corporations to donate food to food banks instead of destroying or wasting it. One target is foods that get shipped to Mexico but never get out of customs for one reason or another; officials from customs agencies appeared to talk about donating that food to food banks instead. You can find more information on their site. I wonder if we could donate enough to get CMLL to record match 2 (though effort level on these extra shows isn’t always the highest.) Atlantis Jr., Zeuxis, and Salvador Lutteroth were the CMLL reps at the press conference.

When asked about changing tag team partners to Persephone, Zeuxis said that no one in wrestling is indispensable, and CMLL has a lot of talent. That is perfectly in keeping with the company’s line. They should bonus her for nailing it.

Kris Statlander did defeat Willow Nightingale, so they’ll rematch for the CMLL Women’s World Championship at some point. If it happens on All In (possible but not certain), I believe it would become the largest crowd to see a CMLL title match.

Much credit to Infobae for getting an article from the concept”foreigners, they like Mexican wrestling too.

6) Dark Scoria, Dark Spíritu, El Mesías vs Dave The Clown, Murder Clown, Panic Clown and Forastero, Fresero Jr., Sansón [cage]

Space will air this show starting at 9:45 Mexico City time (about 75 minutes into the CMLL show). The top three matches will definitely air, and based on recent history, the fourth will probably air.

This is the final TV taping before TripleMania Mexico. The winner of match 1 will challenge Flammer on that show. My guess is something in the main event fills in the missing names for the TripleMania main event cage match. AAA’s also missing an opponent for Vampiro’s casket match on that show. The implications for TripleMania are more interesting than the matches on the show. Maybe match four will be good; maybe the women will put something together in match one.

I’m not sure if it’s significant, but AAA has not been using the TNA logo with the Crazzy Steve and Havok team. On a very quick look, it doesn’t appear TNA has been promoting this appearance on Twitter. Crazy Steve last appeared in TNA in April, Havok last in May. (Laredo Kid also hasn’t appeared in TNA since May, since losing the TNA Digital title.) Is it possible AAA’s still working with Scott D’Amore and not TNA?

I have not seen a ticket map; Aguascalientes is typically one of the better-drawing AAA TV stops.

Mas Lucha has a set of interviews from the recent AAA press event to talk about athletic wear tie-ups. Pagano says he’s about 80%. I guess it must’ve been out of sight, out of mind for me not to put it together before, but Pagano’s the obvious opponent for Vampiro at TripleMania if he’s healthy. Pagano’s asked about that, but asked in a “Penta said no, would you say yes?” and he’s mock offended that he’d choose to be the second choice. He does talk about his long and strong fandom of Vampiro, and it sounds like he’d be up for that retirement match.

Hijo del Vikingo acknowledged TripleMania Mexico City is out of the question for him. There’s concern about him messing up the work that’s been done on his knee. Vikingo is hopeful he may get cleared in 4-6 weeks, but it sounds like he’s been convinced not to rush this. He did his second training session and his first springboard since the injury shortly before the interview. Vikingo says he was as nervous doing that springboard as the first time he ever did one, then thrilled when he could pull it off safely.

Forastero says he really has no interest in teaming with Fresero Jr. but that’s what the promotion decided. NGD and Los Traumados have feuded on indie shows so that’s more keeping in that feud rather than taking shots at the booking but also it’s still a weird partnership.

Quereatro’s “Indy Wrestling” promotion (yes that’s really it’s name) has a 2nd Anniversary show planned from 08/09. The show was originally a mix of AAA and indie wrestlers, including Penta. Wednesday, IW announced they were told Penta was no longer allowed to be on the same cards as AAA wrestlers. Given the choice between Penta or all the AAA wrestlers, they replaced Psycho Clown, Negro Casas, Abismo Negro Jr., El Fiscal, Faby Apache, Sexy Star, La Hiedra, and Lady Flammer on their lineup with indie wrestlers and kept Penta. IW promised to run an AAA-centric card later to make it up to those who wanted to see those names.  Penta being vetoed by AAA seems like a new, consistent policy, though it also seems notable that at least some of these groups are choosing to break with AAA rather than ditch Penta (which is the point of these sorts of blocks).

An AAA spot show in Toluca with a Psycho Clown vs Mesias vs Cibernetico match is being nicknamed Triangular de la Muerte. It’s a coincidence but a funny one.

A Vampiro retirement stop in Arena Aficion on Thursday seems to have drawn a good house.

4) Multifacetico Jr. © vs Príncipe Centauro [IWRG IC WELTER]
2nd defense
5) Hell Boy & Hijo de LA Park vs Estrella Divina & Jessy Ventura and Hijo de Canis Lupus & LA Park Jr. and Hijo De Silver King & Vangellys [relevos suicidas]
6) ? vs ?? [mask, hair, ? CHAMP]

Vangellys and Hell Boy are the people putting titles on the line , so there’s probably a title change there. (On the other hand, this Silver King Jr. has existed for about five minutes, so him losing a mask wouldn’t be any sort of deal.)

Other Notes

Telemundo has an article on Miss Gaviota as the first transexual luchador. I’m not sure if this is a new one or if it just gets repeated every year.
