09/27 news

Ovaciones now has a different card for Friday’s Arena Mexico show.

4) Hiroshi Tanahashi & Shinsuke Nakamura vs GdI (Olimpico & Rey Bucanero) [IWGP TAG]
5) Mistico, Dr. Wagner Jr., El Hijo del Santo vs GdA (Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy)

The Mistico match now makes a lot more sense, but that’s a much lesser IWGP Tag match. CMLL.com makes no mention of a change, and as you’ll see the Box Y Lucha interviews, Dr. Morales was under the impression the original match was the one that was being run. Either something that changed over the weekend or someone screwed up. Or both, I guess.

EDIT: CMLL.com confirms the match changes. suck suck suck.

There’s a Paucha preview, quick deferring words about Atlantis from Ultimo and Rey, and a mention of Negro and Felino’s IWGP JR TAG match. Trhy’re mentioned as heading over on 10/03, so I assume they’re working sometime besides the 10/08 Tokyo Dome show.

Ovaciones hints towards an Averno/Santo rivalry based on Averno pulling of his mask during the GP. Santo will also be a special 10/20 Arena Coliseo show (a Thursday, so it’s probably not CMLL booked) for his 23rd anniversary as a wrestler. Mil Mascaras, Villano III, Blue Panther, and a whole bunch of people Santo’s beaten for their masks are expected to be present.

Box Y Lucha updated sometime after the Metro chat. Inside #2773
– Championship Poster of Marcela
– Quick Santo bio
Interview with Nakamura and Tanahashi about the title match. They’re #1 in the world, and Ultimo and Rey will see.
– Interview with Rey and Ultimo about the title match. They’re #1 and the belts are staying in Mexico.
– AAA recap. For what it’s worth, they do mention a disturbance, but only after the main event when Chessman tried to leave without getting his head shaved.
– Interview with Martha Villalobos. Among other things, she seems pleased women’s wrestling returned to Arena Mexico.
– Interview with Zumbido, who wants it clear he was never gone from AAA. He goes on to thank everyone he can think of for being in wrestling.
– Interview with Tarzan Boy. He’s confused about his dual group membership, he’s disappointed to just be hanging around the periphery, with no sort of rival or title chase. There’s also someone doing a clothing line use his name and image, which he’s not given permission for, and he’s not very pleased about that.
– Pentagon Black talks about his start in wrestling.

  1. The Arena Mexico semi certainly makes more sense, but It would be a very strange move If they went with Nakamura/Tanahashi V Rey/Olimpico as a main – To the best of my knowledge Bucanero and Olimpico have not teamed since Olimpico was Injured V Atlantis/Panther in January. It has to be Ultimo and Rey – the established team who are ‘the real’ los GDI and the top duo in Mexico!! If they’re going to play it off as some kind of ‘best of Mexico V best of Japan’ It just has to be Ultimo and Rey. Otherwise they’d be as well just giving the title shot to the current CMLL tag title holders, Averno & Mephisto.

I’d imagine the main event at least will be as originally advertised. And as weird a match as it is, I still hope the semi does not change either -Watching Mistico V Santo will be pretty interesting for novelty value if nothing else. And it always gives Atlantis another opportunity to get more heat and further cement his rudo turn if he screws 2 of the most popular luchadors in Santo & Negro. Besides, I want to see Misterioso In a semi :)

  2. Meltzer says that, while Jarrett’s entrance didn’t cause any more of a riot than any American Heel would have, there was some chair-throwing brawl at the end of the show. This is the same show you were referring to, right?

  3. Thats an awkward change, as the Japanese press just got done announcing the original pairing. Oh well, I guess its more than obvious who the winners are now (there was at least a chance of GDI winning them, then dropping them back at the Tokyo Dome).
