04/26: Mexico, Soberano I

Box Y Lucha points out that Friday’s cancellation is Arena Mexico’s third. The one we forgot was after the Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Cien Caras mask match, where the building had to undergo repairs after that overflow crowd. I presume they just moved it for the duration, as opposed to just not having shows.

There hasn’t been official word from the promotions of cancellations for next week, but since the government is heavily against large groups gathering, they’re not going to happen. I guess we’re more waiting for what, if nay, alternate plans are going to be announced.

CMLL updated it’s GDL’s Sunday lineup, replacing Black Warrior with Dragon Rojo Jr.

Soberano I, the father of Euforia and Hijo del Soberano, passed away Saturday morning in Torreon. He was 60 years and was a long time Laguna area wrestler who also worked in Texas for a stretch.

There’s talk of creating a museum of lucha libre in Mexico City. Lots of pieces have been collected, but they’re still looking for the money to do it.

Dr. Wagner Jr. talks up his feud with Cibernetico & Perro for the record show. He’d like a hair vs mask match with Perro. It’s good to want things.

Cesar reviews: Arkangel, Angel Azteca Jr., Apocalpsis.

Veneno’s blog has photos of Veneno in Merida.

In Leon, the local wrestlers who’ve worked AAA shows there are complaining about not getting paid.

MIA: Anyone seen Hijo de Faraon? Hasn’t been on a card since the Feb 18 show in SLP.

  1. Dr. Lucha would be the best person to ask since he was the main man for news when it occured but I have to disagree with the Box y Lucha article. Arena Mexico was damaged by the Rayo/Cien match but that was the final week of the Arena Mexico cycle. That was back when they’d do 6-8 weeks straight to build a feud and then switch to Arena Coliseo for a bit. The Rayo/Cien feud finished off September and as far as I know the plan was always to run Arena Coliseo the following couple of weeks until the big November return to build to the December finale at Arena Mexico.

Since there is no more local Guadalajara TV and they just air the regular Televisa show, perhaps they can film the show tonight? (yes, I’m saying this b/c TZUKI is wrestling! Well – he’s booked anyways!)

When was Angel Azteca Jr. in Japan?

  2. @Rob: I think you’re right. They used to have a circus move into Arena Mexico for a few weeks, and they’d run Coliseo.

  3. The circus was always in the winter though. That’s why they always left Arena Mexico to do a winter Coliseo season which I miss.

That ByL article also correctly points out in 1991 there were a few missed Friday shows at Arena Mexico due to the wrestlers striking.

  4. I’m trying to remember when the circus stopped coming altogether. Dan Denton would know, b/c he was wrestling down there at the time. Oh well, I thought the circus was after anniversary for some reason.

I remember going to ArMex in 1995, and they still had downstairs sections overlapped by the balcony totally curtained off.
