Hi!
This is the first Tapatia awards, designed to honor the best in lucha libre over the past year. We encourage all fans to vote, and let their voice be heard on the previous twelve months of Mexican lucha libre. This year of voting will cover the calendar year 2004. Matches taped in Mexico in 2003 but first aired in the United States and Canada in 2004 will also be considered eligible.
As this is our first year, there’s some experimenting going on to see what works and what doesn’t. In order to get a handle on how much work this would be, we’ve cut the ballot down to the eleven awards. This year, there will be no “Worst Of” awards. We’ll not be doing comments in addition to awards, but we highly encourage voters to follow up the winners announcement with their thoughts.
Voting will be held from December 26th, 2004 to January 10th. One ballot per person. Send completed ballots to luchaawards@thecubsfan.com. Ballots to other addresses may not be counted!
Categories with first thru third voting will give 5 points for first, 3 points for second, 2 points for third. Categories with first thru fifth voting will give 12 points for first, 8 points for second, 5 points for third, 3 points for fourth, and 2 points for fifth. Tie and split votes will be thrown out.
Any match in any location using the Mexican lucha libre style are eligible to be included. Shows in the US and elsewhere using this style are included. Japanese lucha libre promotions such as Michinoku Pro are not included, but Japanese tours by Mexican lucha libre promotions are included. Female and mini wrestlers are eligible for all categories, unless otherwise specified.
Quick descriptions of the awards:
1) Best Wrestler – top wrestler over the last year.
2) Best Match – should be obvious. Please include the date the match happened.
3) Best Tecnico – greatest good guy
4) Best Rudo – for the entertaining evil-doers
5) Best Tag Team – two person team. Had to team up during the year.
6) Best Trio – three person team. Had to team up during the year.
7) Best Promotion – outstanding organization. If regional/city promotion, I’d appreciate if the region was specified.
8) Best Rivalry – most interesting/exciting/entertaining feud. Can be person vs person, or people vs people.
9) Best Legend – wrestler over the age of 40.
10) Most Improved – wrestler who stepped up their game the highest from 2003
11) Most Underrated – wrestler who’s deserving of more attention from both the promotion and the fans
I (thecubsfan) am the sole dictator of the awards, and my decisions will be final.

May I assume there is no Rookie of the Year b/c it’s obvious who wins?:P
Next year(now that I have you watching AAA… or do I?) we need an Atomicos(four man team) category.
Rob
I’ve never seen wrestling awards do a RoY category that makes sense and I couldn’t figure out a way to do one on my own. I think the concept isn’t one that can be applied to wrestling the way it is in sports; no one’s truly a rookie if they’ve made it something any of us can see – the true rookies are working in gyms and tents and maybe getting paid in sandwhiches. The guys who make it to stuff we see are experienced, maybe not at that level, but they’re not rookies.
Maybe Most Improved should really be done that way? Next year.
There’s so few atomico matches in CMLL, I didn’t think it’d be worthwhile to do. Most teams are so random and inconsisent, doing Best Trio may already be too much. I supose if I was paying more attention to AAA I would’ve thought of it, but I have no idea how often they do them.
