06/14 AAA TV Results (Monterey) – Verano de Escandalo 2015

cool finish, little bit of stutter because of the stream…

AAA TV (SUN) 06/14/2015 Arena Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo León [AAA, MT, SuperLuchas]
Verano de Escandalo, 2015
1) Machine Rocker, Mamba, Mini Psycho Clown, Taya Valkyrie b Dinastía, El Elegido, Faby Apache, Pimpinela Escarlata
Machine Rocker replaced Parka Negra and now has a white fright wig on top of his mask. Dinastia and Mini Psycho Clown fought a lot (and well) leading into their title match. Rudos surprising won with Machine Rocker submitted Elegido to a crab as Mamba also submitted Faby.
2) Drago b Fénix, Laredo Kid, Daga, Steve Pain, Aerostar, Bengala, Súper Nova, Súper Fly, Hijo del Fantasma [Alas de Oro]
Laredo Kid was the surprise luchador (announced in the match graphic.) Steve Pain also returned (again) to AAA. A nearly non stop high spots match that start with four dives at the same time and hardly slowed down there. There was no specific story to the match, just big spots. Fenix suffered a shoulder injury taking a suplex out of the ring (hitting the apron on the way down – the spot either went wrong or was a really bad idea), tried to continue, and collapsed in pain after a top rope double stomp. He was stretchered out, crying in pain. Match was derailed a little bit while Fenix was taken away, but picked up speed again near the finish. Drago beat Aerostar with his flipping DDT and Dragon’s Tail cradle, similar to the finish of their Best of Five series. Drago was given a giant golden wings trophy.
3) Averno, Chessman, Cibernético b Monsther Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown © and Electroshock, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Parka Negra [AAA TRIOS]
Parka Negra was moved from the opener to take Kronos’ place – it’s unclear if he’s meant to be part of the trio before. A chaotic match, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, but about what was expected by this trio. Single fall to a win, ending when Cibernetico fouled Psycho Clown (mostly missed the camera) and Chessman speared Psycho Clown for the win and title change. Psycho Circus fall on their 9th defense, after 28 months as champions. Hellbrothers are 5th champions. All three teams fought on and off after the match. In breaks during the post-match brawling, Monsther demanded a rematch for the trios titles and Psycho Clown challenged Chessman for the Latin American title
4) Angélico & Jack Evans b Dark Cuervo & Dark Scoria [cage, hair]
Rules were the first team out would escape, and the entire losing team would lose all their hair. Everyone bled in a bit more of a brawl than the usual Angelico/Jack match. A very good match, second match on the show. Jack had chances to escape, but appeared not to want to leave Angelico behind. All four fought on the top of the cage at the end, two on opposite sides of the ring. Scoria was fouled and crotched on top of the cage by Angelico, and Cuervo was shoved off and fell thru two tables (though mostly just cracked his head on one – both he and Scoria had bad looking head impacts during the match.) Cuervo & Scoria got most of their hair cut off in the ring, then asked for handshakes. Angelico & Jack accepted, and La Secta turned on them and left. (They appeared to get the rest cut off in the back.) Angelico & Jack won a match with a lots of big spots. Both Cuervo & Scoria lost their hair.
5) El Patrón Alberto © DQ Brian Cage [AAA HEAVY]
Blue Demon Jr. and Texano Jr. were seconds and Tirantes was referee. Match very quickly turned into the rudos (Tirantes included) trying to cheat the title away from Alberto and failing repeatedly. Demon was ejected a few minutes in for counting Texano’s interference. Tirantes would fast count for Cage and refuse to count for Alberto. Texano eventually summon Pentagon & Fantasma for support, and they were both thrashed by Alberto. Alberto finally took out Tirantes with his head kick and put Cage in the armbar, who tapped with no referee. Cage escaped, give Alberto a foul and F5’ed him on the belt. Piero, who had turned up on stage too soon and tried to turn invisible, then ran down to make the count and did count 3 for Cage. He immediately signaled a DQ win for Alberto. Rudos stomped Alberto and buried him under an American flag. In a post show interview with the media, Alberto claimed he told AAA he wanted a cage match with hair on the line with Brian Cage, or he’d quit the company.
6) La Parka, Myzteziz, Rey Mysterio Jr. b El Mesías, Johnny Mundo, Pentagón Jr.
Rey entered with a Terminator and had a Terminator themed outcome. A lot of La Parka comedy (including some well timed stuff when a spot got botched.) Myzteziz suffered a right leg injury but finished the match. Rey Mysterio Jr. won with a leaping off the middle rope Canadian Destroyer on Pentagon Jr. Mundo and Mysterio had a very brief staredown post match.

Air Date: 06/27 and 07/04

Alas de Oro is worth the price of the show alone, unless you’re completely uninterested in the style. It’s better than last year’s TripleMania 10 way and the 10 way on Lucha Underground, even with Fenix’s injury (and he wasn’t the only one who was probably hurt.) There were so many things going on that it was hard to keep track of them, but it was about as good as you’re going to get with that style. Both Steve Pain and Laredo Kid shined in their debut. (Laredo’s name was actually listed on the prematch graphic, but it was up and down too quick to notice.) If anything, there was so much going on that it’s hard to remember few individual spots, just the overall feeling of amazement.

Fenix’s injury is said to be an injured clavicle which will keep him out weeks, according to SLP promotion Juniors. They’re promoting a show on 07/01, so Fenix is at least out that long (though he wasn’t listed on the last card they posted.) The spot where he got hurt on made no sense and I have no idea what was supposed to happen.

The cage match is also worth going out of your way to see. Like their TV match this week, it’s a brawl where Angelico & Jack work in a bit of their normal moves. They built in good drama even though it never quite seemed like La Secta were going to win.

The opener and the trios title match were about what they expected. Machine Rocker took a spectacular bump in the opener and it was surprising to see him to beat Elegido (especially in Monterrey.) They did a lot of stuff in the trios title match, some of which went well. It definitely would’ve been more coherent as a 3v3 match, but the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Parka Negra as a Holocausto member seemed to work well enough for them to keep doing it, but it wasn’t sure if that was the plan.

This could be a pivotal moment for the Psycho Circus. Psycho Clown challenging Chessman for the Latin American championship, if it actually happens, makes a lot of sense: it explains why it was important not to have Demon just win the title back, and it gives the title a chance to be the secondary title for the guys who aren’t in the world title picture but need wins to be ready to be part of it later on. (If Alberto is just going to be defending the heavyweight title about 3 times a year against a foreign menace, there’s a big gap to be filled.) Psycho Clown’s plateaued and even dropped down a little bit after TripleMania because of the influx of new names and being relegated back into the trios title picture, but a feud with Chessman might give him a spotlight again.

The title match was aggravating, but I think AAA would say it was intended to be aggravating. Alberto did a post show interview where Alberto declared he’ll leave AAA unless they give him Cage in a cage with hair (and maybe the title) on the line. That was their big angle for TripleMania. It just felt like the usual AAA Tiranates overbooking during the show. It left me not wanting not to see the match again, and just generally disappointing.  There’s definitely reason to something to build a rematch, but they did so many different interference/Tirantes spots and it was just kind of absurd. Alberto was a superman who should’ve won nine times over, Tirantes was the guy getting all the heat, and Cage could’ve been Parka Negra or Machine Rocker for all he meant to the match – only he’s the guy they’re expecting the fans pay to see beat. There’s no real reason for Alberto to want a rematch, he won the match and nearly won it cleanly despite tremendous handicaps, but it’s happening because it’s happening.

Alberto also really needed to do that rematch promo during the show, so the whole thing wouldn’t have ended as flat. This was a quick moving AAA show, finishing under three hours, but the crowd seemed to lose energy after the title match and maybe that could’ve brought them back.

(The Tirantes heel ref stuff needs to go away, but it’s needed to go away for years and AAA’s just stubborn on that point. Can they at least change how they do it? Match would’ve been drastically improved by just having Piero start the match to start, and then Tirantes taking his place as the replacement referee when Piero gets taken out. AAA always does it where Tirantes cheats for the rudo, gets taken out and Piero is the second ref coming in. Just like how AAA always has the rudos do a billion cheap shots, none actually work, and then the finish is 10 seconds after someone’s finally thought to do a foul. Maybe try mixing it up a bit.)

The main event didn’t help. Rey’s entrance and gear was great, but the match itself felt like it had the intensity of a house show main event. It was going to have a hard time following the previous matches even if it was good, and it was a match with a lot of La Parka comedy instead. They did the briefest of teases of Mundo versus Rey after the match, but the Lucha World Cup also accomplished that. The idea probably was to get fans used to seeing Mundo by having him here, but he was so inconsequential to the match that it diminished the specialness of seeing him if you already knew who he was.

There’s a behind the scenes article on Rey’s Terminator mask on enuhito’s blog.

There was no mention of TripleMania in front of the crowd. No date, no location, no video just teasing the concept. It’s possible the show may have been meant to end with something like that (and it does read as if they expect to announce it this week.) It ended with a “poor signal” message instead. The feed itself declined in quality during the last hour of the show and the main event was bordering on unwatchable at times. The VOD for these shows has been simply a recording of the live broadcast on previous iPPV; hopefully they put up a cleaner version this time.

The recently elected governor of Nuevo Leon was at the show. They announced his presence while setting up the cage.

Next taping is 06/27 in Orizaba, with the Mini Psycho Clown/Dinastia title match. If it’s like their match here, it’ll be great. If it’s like the Heavyweight title match (and the last Dinastia title match was similarly filled with interference), then it’ll be a little disappointing.
