CMLL (TUE) 08/05 Arena Mexico [SuperLuchas, ESTO]
1) Astro Boy & Starman b Artillero & Súper Comando
2) Bam Bam, Fantasy, Tzuki b Fire, Pequeño Violencia, Pequeño Warrior
3) Flash, Máscara Púrpura, Metalik b Bronco III, Loco Max, Nitro
4) Dos Caras Jr., Grey Shadow, La Sombra DQ Dragon Rojo Jr., Rey Bucanero, Sangre Azteca
5) Atlantis, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero b Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara [CMLL TRIOS]
Atlantis and UG won the first fall with Atlantidas on the kids. Mascara and Fantasams paid them back with their own finishes to win the second fall. The third fall came down to Negro and Hector, and Negro got a rollup and the ropes for the win.
Atlantis, Negro Casas and Último Guerrero are the 20th Champions. Atlantis is 4 time champ, Ultimo is a 2 time champ, and this is Negro’s first time holding the belt. This is the first time Hector Garza has lost the title in the ring.
It’s kinda neat how these titles slide smoothly from one team where people were complaining about favoritism and internal politics to another team where people will be complaining about favoritism and internal politics.
You certainly make a case this hurts the tecnico trio, which just was starting to get momentum for their unlikely but successful championship run. If Mascara and Fantasma are pulled back into the aimless meanderings of the midcard then this surely has been a waste of time, but it works out fine if there’s some follow up and they can easily do something with that finish. It’s too soon to know.
Mostly, I like the rudos so I’m totally okay with this change. It’s not exactly a team that I’d expect to do anything with these titles (ESTO’s article notes Atlantis & UG weren’t thrilled to get this shot with Negro, and Negro felt likewise), but I didn’t figure the previous team to do anything with them and they were fighting champions for a whole two months.
Obviously, no coincidence they did the title change on cheap general admission ticket night. CMLL really wants to make Tuesday night Arena Mexico shows work and doing things like this makes them seem less like the third most important show of the week.
For what it’s worth, tecnicos took the semimain in two falls. Rey yanked Dos’ mask off for the second fall DQ. BTW, what’s the Flashinda?

If i had to take a guess, i’d say it’s the neat little tricked out crucifix variation he uses quite a lot, where he hooks the guy who is lying face down and rolls into the pinning predicament – Like what Yoshitsune pinned Lyger with.
Might be a million miles out, but if Flash did have a manouvre he was going to give a name to, i’d say it’s most likely to be that one. :)
I was hoping that if the Guerreros won the Trios it would have been Rey, UG and Atlantis.
So I guess the Atlantis turn is off for now huh?
It was never “on” at all… it actually may be more possible now…
I find it interesting that they did the title change on Tuesday for C3.
It’s CT, Cadena 3 name is owned by the Argentinian network.
Flashina = http://www.luchawiki.org/index.php?title=Skayde_Special – EXCEPT… just start from picture two and Quack being on all fours about to get rolled up. Flash doesn’t use his hands during the application of the move.
Mini’s and tercera look killer. Can’t wait to watch!
I’d like to make the case of why would you run a tournament where the National champs get eliminated by a team that loses their next match and end up having two makeshift teams make the finals and have the winning team beat your top star and world champ… only for them to make 2 insignificant title defenses and drop them to a makeshift rudo team that features members of opposite stables who are doomed to turn on each other. Got all that?
If CMLL is trying to do constant title switches to spike attendance, that’s a stupid as hell idea b/c they’ve already killed their belts off over the past years with people not defending them at all or even bringing them to the ring except when they’re about to lose them. If all these title switches are going to become common hoping to make it a more ‘WWEesque’ product – then they might as well do it right and turn Bam Bam this Sunday, then have him drop the belt to Tzuki in 2 weeks. ARE Y’ALL WITH ME?
Semi-main only went 2 falls and 7 minutes but I wouldn’t hold my breath hoping for the opener to air.
@Rob: Amen to the last thought. i actually thought they would give Garza’s team a run with the titles, but apparentle they got the “Rey Misterio as Transitional World Champion to put the belt on someone more credible” treatment.
Sorry meant “apparently”. LOL!
It’s interesting that they only change the holders of their “own” titles. The CMLL titles changed hands 7 times this year if I counted right (3x Tag Team Titles, 2x Trios Titles, 1x Mini-Estrellas Title, 1x Coliseo Tag Titles plus vacancies), but none of the National Titles and the NWA Titles held by CMLL wrestlers has changed. Seems like they want to focus the interest of the audience onto the CMLL titles. Surely it won’t work if they use random changes and teams consisting of random wrestlers.
