02/21: NWA-Mexico, IWRG on Azteca, AULL, Neza

(Ovaciones, mediotiempo, Reforma/Jazzo) The NWA held a press conference yesterday to announce it’s return to Mexico. Blue Demon Jr. was appointed as chairman, and Rambo was announced as official trainer for a school they plan on opening. Robert K. Trobich and David Marquez were there representing the NWA.

– First event may be in late March/early April according to ovaciones, late April/early May according to MT.
– They plan on running in Guadalajara (no arena mentioned), Monterrey (La Nueva Arena Santa Lucia), and Mexico City (the old Gimnasio Juan de la Barera) every two weeks
– Shows will have a lot more singles matches and one fall, with multiman matches reserved or the main event.
– They still want a work out a deal with CMLL, to get talent and the current NWA champions (Atlantis, Averno, Sombra) or at least get the titles back. It sounds like they would like to ditch those three titles (all of which have been around 50 years and held by important people in Mexico) because they feel it diminishes the belts they do promote. At the same time, Demon mentions creating new national titles, so they would be getting rid of belts with lots of history and creating new pointless belts. I hope I’m misunderstanding this, because that sounds so dumb.

Until they announce a card or a deal with CMLL (or someone to provide talent), it’s still probably not work talking much about. I’m skeptical, but then I’m always skeptical so that’s not a fair gauge. There has to be a lot of set up and organization done, and it’s tough to tell from press conferences how much is in place.

Ovaciones mentions IWRG has signed a TV deal with TV Azteca. They’ll start on the channel 03/05, and it sounds like the shows will be all events taped away from Arena Naucalpan. They’ve got 10 shows scheduled. Not sure if this is going to make the US (on Azteca America), but it’s something to check for.

Box Y Lucha has added blogs to their website. Actually, they seem to be calling them blogs but they’re just five column articles in practice (or I can’t find a page that lists them all in some sort of order, or an RSS feed to do the same.) More content is always good, however it’s presented. Today, we’ve got stories about Vampiro being mobbed for autographs during the height of his popularity, interviewing India Sioux, seeing Santo live for the first time, a 70 year old man who never missed a show at Arena Coliseo (except for a couple years during World War II.

AULL (SAT) 02/16 Arena Lopez Mateos [the Gladiatores]
1) Angel de Plata b Tormento
2) Drimen & Rey Cristal b Blasfemia & Hombre de Guerra
3) Epidemia, Robin Maravilla, Yakuza b Dr. Muerte, Heavy Boy, Ice Killer
4) Rey Krimen, Rocky Santana, Sadico, Sepulturero I b Cerebro Maligno, Epitafio, Herejia, Judas el Traidor
5) La Sombra, Sagrado, Último Vampiro DQ Averno, Ephesto, Ultimo Gladiador

Weird to have a CMLL/AAA teamup there. Gladiador yanked Vampiro’s mask for the DQ. Everyone turned on Judas el Tradior in the semimain.

CMLL (SUN) 02/17 Arena Neza [the Gladiatores]
1) Dr. Trauma & Torbellino Negro b Pachuco & Tormenta de Acero
2) Insecto & Rey Neza DRAW Hijo del Mohicano & Tony Cirio
3) Mohicano I & Mohicano II b Marco Rivera & Rayo Tapatío II
4) Hiroka & Mima Shimoda b Luna Mágica & Marcela
5) Atlantis & Último Guerrero b Marco Corelone & Negro Casas

Guerreros won the main with a double suplex on Corelone. Hiroka pinned Marcela to win the women’s match, which sets up the title match for this week. Hiroka should probably not wear the Japanese flag when she’s challenging for the Mexican title. Rey Neza and Tony Cirio pinned each other for the draw.

IWRG (SUN) 02/17 Arena Naucalpan [the Gladiatores]
1) Angel de Oro & Soberano b Guerrero Inca & Semental
2) Trauma I & Trauma II b Avisman & Star Boy
3) Coco Verde, Cocolores, Freelance b Cerebro Negro, Mr. Muerte, Veneno
4) Bogeman, Pantera, Ultraman Jr. b Black Fish, Black Terry, Chiborra
5) Multifacético DQ Kaminari [hair]

Kaminari actually pinned Multifaetico in the third fall for the win, but he got there via some Black Terry interference and the ref changed the decision to a DQ.

Shocker’s asked AAA to stop using the Guapo group name, Los Guapos told Luchas 2000, “No.” Fair enough! They’ve also got Blue Demon Jr. vs the son of Blue Demon.

  1. First show in TVAzteca seems to be the last according to the main event: GroonXXX, Anibal Jr, Rayo, Dinafakids and Canek… argh!

  2. Shame AAA does not promote shows at Juan de la Barrera. I know they left because the venue wanted tv rights fees, but I heard this all the way back in 2000, so I don’t know if it’s true anymore. Still nothing wrong with using Barrera as a house show venue.
