CMLL CAN52 GDR #87

taped 07/13, 07/15, aired 07/21

(see videos from this show here)

You know, the record book says Mini Damian won the cibernetico, but if you’ve seen it, I think you have to agree that the true dominant force was the Top Rope. The Top Rope was owning people left and right, which was kinda disappointing to see.

The cibernetico was really good in parts and disappointing in other parts. I wish they made it a yearly bit – banish it to a no-draw date in the middle of winter if you have to – because I think some of the problem was that this was the minis One Big Chance and they took it more seriously than they should’ve. People recovered from their mistakes pretty quickly, but if they were more relaxed, maybe they wouldn’t have had the mistakes.

Super Luchas reported this match as 4 minutes longer before the first elimination. Perhaps Electrico got to get in the ring during that time!

They used a generic “CMLL” microphone to interview Mini Halloween after his hair match, so I guess they didn’t know where (if?) that interview would air. Still wish they were putting the minis hair match on an actual TV show.

Main event was exactly what I thought it’d be.

  1. My buddy Colin summed up my thoughts on the Torneo for me:

“It wasn’t a BAD match but I don’t think it was as great as you and I hoped it would be.”

I wanted to see them tear the house down and bust out everything possible… that didn’t happen. I did however enjoy the match they put on and was impressed with just about everyone.

There was definitely editing early on and of course they had to edit the DIVES! CMLL.com has photos of a Sombrita tope suicida and Electrico somersault plancha over the top rope. Without those photos we would have just thought Electrico had the easiest night ever.:)

The ropes definitely weren’t being nice to these guys but I thought they covered as well as they could. Keep in mind I’ve seen the semi-main from this week which shows exactly how bad it can get when guys don’t know how to recover properly after blown moves. So at least these mini’s, if nothing else, proved they are professionals.

Fire was pretty great… it’s nice to see the ex-Mascarita Magica is still as awesome as he used to be.

The real stars were of course Pequeno Halloween, Pequeno Damian 666, Bam Bam and Pequeno Olimpico. It’s fitting it came down to a tag with those four guys. I especially thought when it came down to those four, the match was worked really smartly and a lot of the nearfalls were very believable which is rare for CMLL.

Has any match on GdR or FSE gotten more than 16:43 in the history of the shows?

Overall, out of all the Ciberneticos this year, I prefer:

    1. Reyes Del Aire
    2. Women
    3. Mini’s
    4. Gran Prix

This is about where Henrik disowns me.:(

    Thanks for the upload, BTW.

As for the hair match clips… it looked good. Hard to tell from just the clips of course but crowd seemed into it at least. I wonder if moving Bam Bam up into the regular sized division is to make room for Mascarita 2000 to come in under a new gimmick and become the new mini’s star? You think they would dare give him the Mini Mistico gimmick? Santo never had a mini…

I eagerly await a possible Tzuki, Mascarita 2000, original Mascarita team somewhere on the indy circuit. All 3 Mascarita incarnations on one team!!!

  2. I was not impressed by the cibernetiquito tourney, in my mind, I was in a “what if” mode of it airing during last week’s CMLL show and I don’t think it held a candle to the Fuerza vs Night’s Queens match, or even to the one with Canibal or the other one with Gran Apache, that’s not a good sing for me…

They covered their botches nicely but that make me think they were more thinking about failing the spots than hitting them, and the worse thing is that there were nothing really cool or new about the exchanges, if there were exchanges at all. Picked up near the end with the final 4, but it was the disappointing thing for me, the guys who are never on TV didn’t get the change to shine that much. Then again, it might be the reason why they’re not on TV.

Even the crowd seemed to be dead for the earlier portion of it. I saw this during the morning, before getting upset by the AAA no show. I dunno, it was a weekend where I didn’t like anything lucha related at all.

  3. BTW, the hair match really isn’t that out of nowhere for the hardcore CMLL fans who watch TV b/c it was advertised on the regular TV show during the ‘carteleras’ segment. My memory might be sketchy but I even recall Bam Bam cutting a promo last week to hype it.
