Puebla vs DF, Tijuana awards, En Busca de un Idolo

Details are sparse, but Team Puebla beat Team Mexico City last night in Arena Puebla. A busy week in the arena; they were filming bits for a cooking show last week.

Tijuana held their 2011 award banquet Monday. Winners in lucha libre categories:

  • Novato: Enigma
  • Prospect: Viento
  • Revelation: Jonathan
  • Tecnico: Hijo de Rey Misterio (II – the good, not arrested one)
  • Rudo: TJ Boy
  • Best Success in Foreign Promotions: Super Kendo
  • Tag: Mr. Maldito & the Platino
  • Trio: Arandu, TJ Boy, Star Boy
  • Referee: Pensamiento Negro (a rudo)
  • Promotion: Promociones MV
  • Match: Hijo del Santo vs Blue Demon (01/14, no video)
  • Luchador of the year: Arandu

Bestia 666 and Super Kendo were also honored for raising the name of Tijuana elsewhere. The Instituto Municipal del Deporte was given the Rey Misterio medal for supporting lucha libre.

Today’s Arena Mexico show has a few important matches. Mascara Dorada puts the CMLL Welterweight championship on the line versus Psicosis. Dorada’s looking for his seven defense, while Psicosis just wants a first singles win in his two years in CMLL. You don’t need to look at the elo rankings to know Psicosis has been treated at the level of Dorada; this is a shot Mephisto or Averno usually gets, and Psicosis getting it instead seems like something’s up. Maybe it’s part of a long term rehab plan – Psicosis looks credible in a loss enroute to bigger things later on – or maybe it’s an attempt at a quick fix. It should be a good match either way, and Psicosis does have a chance to prove something about himself tonight. I like this Psicosis singles match a lot better than the one the AAA version seems headed towards.

The card also has the final two league matches of En Busca de un Idolo. Triton takes on Euforia and Niebla Roja faces Dragon Lee. Euforia’s in fourth place, but the most vulnerable man to miss the next round is third place Puma King. Euforia jumps back ahead of Puma with a win, or even just some decent numbers from the judges. The winner of Niebla Roja and Dragon Lee has a strong chance of passing Puma as well.

Results are only 20% of the point total in this competition. Judging and polls are the 80%. The last judging scores are tonight. The last poll numbers will be decided at Wednesday at noon, according to a new banner ad on the website. The poll, loading slightly slower with every vote, has Niebla Roja in first, then Titan, Triton, Puma King, Diamante, Dragon Lee, Polvora, and Euforia in last. Euforia’s low poll numbers mean he’s actually in danger of missing the next round if he loses tonight. Puma’s poll numbers and his already accumulated lead might end up more than Euforia’s poll numbers and judges scores. It’s even possible Niebla Roja loses to Dragon Lee and still qualifies because his big poll numbers. It’s going to be close, and it’s going to be confusing.

Ultimo Guerrero briefly talks about En Busca de un Indolo to R de Rudo. He does not seem that thrilled about it, but that may be reading way too much into a random conversation at the end of a spot show far away from home.

DJ Spectro has a review of Sunday’s IWRG show. Sounds like Trauma II throttled Shadow Phoenix. Also, thanks to the new ape administrator for streamlining the page. The old version would grind my computer to a halt every time I visited it.

Rob has highlights of 06/06/11 CMLL and  05/08/12 CMLL.

LuchaWorld has Decnnis, Diamante Azul, and Mr. Aguila.

Lineups

CMLL (MON) 05/28/2012 Arena Puebla
1) Black Tiger & Blue Center vs Fuerza Chicana & Policeman
2) Fantasy & Pequeño Halcón vs Mercurio & Pequeño Warrior
3) Diamante Azul, La Sombra, Rush vs Mr. Niebla, Terrible, Yujiro
4) Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Mr. Águila, Olímpico, Psicosis [MEX TRIOS]
5) Dragon Lee vs Espiritu Maligno, Pegasso, Arissma, Stigma, Puma King, Hombre Bala Jr., Skándalo, Asturiano, Súper Comando, Lestat, Milenium [cage, mask]

Huge show. After last night’s cibernetico, it’s everyone for themselves in a cage match. Puebla guys are always the favorites to lose in Arena Puebla. Asturiano (nearly 23 year vet) and Karissma (22 year vet) and Espiritu Maligno (debut 19 years ago) but there’s no sure bet.

Trios titles are not likely to change hands, but that could still be a good match.

  1. I like Arisma to lose b/c he already lost the rights to use the name Karisma and unless I am completely missing something ‘Arisma’ is just gibberish. He could unmask and re-name himself. Espiritu is a good bet too. Can’t see any CMLL guys being in danger here unless Pegasso lost the rights to his gimmick and we didn’t hear about it.

The real bets here should be on who wins. Dragon Lee is a good candidate but you have two family members of Arena Puebla in Skandalo/Stigma. It’s a real toss-up.

I’m gonna be very sad if after all our hard work Titan falls out of the top 4. It’s a longshot since he’ll get 35-40 points from fan voting but you never know. How ironic would it be if Atlantis’ team ended up being Titan/Triton? Or are we supposed to ignore everything that went down last November?
