  1. It wasn’t mentioned during the show, but has there been any sign of any results from the WB/CMLL licensing deal?

  2. I think you can buy WB/CMLL stuff at the main arenas, but it’s not more visible than that.

  3. Any idea why it is that Mexico just doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of merchandising? Is it the whole country or just lucha libre? Is it a lack of copyright/trademark protection making it difficult to compete with the knockoffs? Is it that they don’t own the rights to their luchadores’ likenesses? It’s almost incredible that a company that’s over 70 years old doesn’t produce any more than t-shirts, posters, noise makers and foam fingers for sale at the shows.

The same goes for AAA. And they DO own the rights to many of their stars’ likenesses. How is it that neither company ever releases any official videos or DVDs?

  4. Piracy would play a big part of it, but for CMLL, it is also that most guys are independent, so they would usually only push owned material, for instance, Mistico. WWE is not spared from piracy down here:

Lack of Videos/DVDs… I think it is because lucha is more of a live show feel to it than wrestling in other places that is more TV oriented. There is always a constant input of new shows on TV, and dozens of live show a month for fans to assist, so there’s not a buy/trade tape culture for it.

  5. It seems like lucha promoters feel they must protect the small live shows at all costs, and figure selling videos/DVDs would cause people to just stay at home.

  6. CMLL has DVD’s of their shows in front of Arena Mexico once in a while but it’s so RANDOM. You would think if they taped one random show, they would tape them all… but that would make too much sense I guess. Supposedly the Santo/Mistico Gran Alternativa show is out there but nobody can get it.
