Two disappointing matches for differing reasons.
Demus 3:16 vs Pequeño Warrior in a hair vs hair match: vastly disappointing. If anything, this felt like the set up match where they got over how much they hated each other instead to build up the big match. This did not at all feel like a big match. No false finishes, mostly the same few brawling spots, and a crowd that really didn’t care. There is a chance that whatever happened on that first dive that was never shown completely changed the rest of the match. Whatever the reason, this was not much.
La Sombra vs Volador Jr. for the NWA World Welterweight Championship: I am totally sure this felt like a MOTYC when watching in the building; the crowd was passionately crazy for it during the third fall, and really strongly into as far back as the first major spot in the first fall. The problems with watching on TV was that first spot was uncharacteristically bad botch spot, it wasn’t the only one, and the match felt clipped up at parts on TV. The finish too was a great idea that didn’t translate as well as they probably hoped. It was a good match, very good during the last fall, but did not feel at the level of the match in Puebla and some off the best matches of this year. Definitely check it out but have some reasonable expectations.
That said, if they had done this same match as the semimain on the anniversary show, both guys would be seen as bigger stars coming out of it. The crowd cared about this match tremendously more than anything I’ve seen leading into the hair match.
