Minis take over.
Pequeño Halcón & Pequeño Maximo vs Pequeño Olímpico & Shockercito in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Bam Bam & Pierrothito vs Aereo & Pequeño Nitro in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Astral & Pequeño Violencia vs Eléctrico & Mercurio in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Instead of writing about the matches, I’d thought I would write about the teams.
Pequeño Halcón & Pequeño Maximo: Pequeño Halcón, who’s name I’ll say right here, did not have a good night. Mini Máximo did the usual Mini Máximo things.
Aereo & Pequeño Nitro: Aereo looked like a perfectly fine high flyer until he nearly ended himself on the dive. Nitro was good. I’m not sure why the match needed to go longer than the dive/camel clutch bit.
Eléctrico & Mercurio: I still think Mercurio has some promise, but he’s got some timing issues and being a técnico doesn’t suit him (outside of the neat tornillo.) Eléctrico is clearly the most ready of this new wave of minis.
Pequeño Universo 2000 & Último Dragoncito: I don’t know if Ultimo Dragoncito is underrated, but it seems like he’s under appreciated (maybe because he never gets any stories.) He’s still really quick in the ring, and the tope con giro thru the ropes is the most deadly dive in the minis division. Mini Universo 2000 is not a full time luchador.
Pequeño Olímpico & Shockercito here was one headscissors spot that didn’t go well at all, but Shockercito seemed to have a good night. Olímpico always has come off as too passive for me, but he brought the intensity when he was forearming Bam Bam in the back of the head here.
Fantasy & Pequeño Warrior: Fantasy is so boring that he brought the usually entertaining Warrior with him. The last match for them was sloppy and dragged and really not much good. I think Fantasy probably looks as good as he does in practice in front of no one as he does in front of a sold out crowd (which this was definitely not.)
Astral & Pequeño Violencia: I totally would not have expected how well Astral adapted to be the rudos. He’s a pretty milquetoast técnico, but definitely had a rudo personality, down to the way he walked. I don’t know what you do with that now, but that’s a neat thing to know and he’s got to find a way to bring that out in his tencico word. Weird to have the two teams specifically acting rudo meet in the final. Violencia was his good usual self.
Bam Bam & Pierrothito: Bam Bam was really fun as a rudo – mini Volador-ish, really. I hope they go thru with the rudo turn, because I think it has equally good possibilities. Pierrothito is the best mini rudo in the world right now (no Mini Abismo makes this an easy call). I would’ve liked the three fall apuesta match between these two in front of a crowd who was into it – this one really did not care of this tournament AT ALL – but they made this as good as six minute TV match as they could have. This final match is the definite most watchable match of this tournament.
