There seems to be a billion articles about Nacho Libre and I presume they’ll be a billion more between now and the movie, but it seems like they’re all repeats, pardon me if I don’t link them all.

Magazines
– Box Y Lucha #2769’s cover has Misterioso and Garza, and the poster is all Rey vs Ultimo
Super Luchas Grafico #14 features Canek.
Luchas 2000 Special is on famous masks (including Canek’s.)

Arenas de Chicago has updated their site; the Misterio/Canek match looks to be July 23rd now, not June.

  1. Yes, a paper in Victoria BC picked up a lucha story as well, including a picture of SUPER PORKY~! squashing Tarzan Boy, that looks like it was taken a second before Alexis’ picture of the same thing

  2. I don’t get it. Florida has a much larger latino population than Illinois, but you guys get the live shows over us. Plus travel would cost less for the workers. What’s up with that?

  3. And whatever happened to the proposed IWA PR tours of Florida back when they were airing their Total Impact show in English? Were no local promoters willing to foot the bill?

You’d think Miami would have the occasional show from IWA or WWC.

  4. One part of it is finding a promoter who’s willing to put on the shows; I’ve always figured Congress isn’t turning a profit on these shows (the free ones for sure!), so it’s really about finding someone who likes the concept enough, they’ll take the loss.

Another thing is – if I didn’t already know there was lucha libre at the Congress Theatre, I might never know. Outside of their respective websites (which haven’t always been updated), and postering around the building, they don’t do a lot of promotion for their shows – it has to be a lot of word of mouth. I don’t know that there’s been lucha shows in Florida, but I do recall that no one knew anything about a Mil Mascaras show in Kansas City till the day it happened – and that’s only because he mentioned into some people in Chicago, I guess.

random: Chicago is a airport hub – maybe that helps on cost?

  5. I remember a few years ago when lucha first aired on Galavision in the states that AAA announced a show in Tampa but for whatever reasons back then, I didn’t go.

And there’s a promotion here called FIP that used to bring in luchadors like Shocker and GdI. But that was before ROH took over booking.

And either IWA or WWC did have one show that I know of a few years back in Kissimmee. Jeff Jarrett was on that card, too. Excluding TNA, MLW, and some other independent promotions that have a luchador here and there, that’s the extent of lucha libre’s impact in Florida in recent years.

Kinda sucks to watch and love these guys every week for years on tv and not be able to see them live. Cali and Chicago are a little too far (and expensive) for me. And I ain’t goin’ to Mexico anytime soon.
