Mistico

In a column published on SuperLuchas, Angie Roux of Amodelaluchalibre says Mistico was among four luchadors who tried out for WWE in October. Mistico was hired, two others were told not, and the fourth one was given an offer but preferred to stay in Mexico to be with his girlfriend. I hope that relationship works out.

Ras de Lona did air a short bit from the press conference about Mistico, but it was not the bit of Panico standing around awkwardly and answer questions from the crowd – they must’ve realized how that looked and retaped something after the press conference. Panico again made the case that they offered Mistico a new contract, Mistico verbally agreed, and then sneaked out rather than sign the deal. No one but CMLL cares that CMLL owns the name and gear, but they feel this is very important for them to emphasis. Even CMLL knows it’s not too hard to slightly modify the name and gear.

SuperLuchas says they will have an interview with Sin Cara in this week’s magazine.

Kcidis illustrates CMLL’s efforts in signing Mistico.

Other Stuff

Virus & Demus’s match on Tuesday seems be no-stip, with the losers losing hair and going back to the minis match for some unknown date. I wish they were clearer on this. Tuesday is a Fan Appreciation day, not mentioned on the poster.

Morelos luchador Baron Siniestro passed away earlier this week. He was mostly active in the70s and won local best rudo and best luchador awards. La Union, El Sol de Cuernavaca and Estrellas del Ring have obits.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update and last week’s Ras de Lona.

Lineups

CMLL (FRI) 03/04/2011 Arena Mexico
1) Camaleón & Tigre Blanco vs Apocalipsis & Inquisidor
2) Fabián el Gitano, Sensei, Starman vs Loco Max, Mortiz, Puma King
3) Goya Kong, Lluvia, Marcela vs Amapola, La Comandante, Princesa Blanca
4) Averno, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas vs Máscara Dorada, Rush, Valiente
5) La Sombra, Máximo, Super Porky vs Héctor Garza, Terrible, Texano

More Dos Leyendas build in the main event. Mr. Niebla returns, and finds himself caught in the Averno/Dorada feud. Ras de Lona had Hijo del Fantasma and Volador in their spots. Fantasma is in at least a two weeks stretch off Arena Mexico shows. Anyway, Averno & Dorada on the card allows CMLL to announce the title match for 03/18 if they decide to put a date to it.

I wish, for 03/11, CMLL did a big Averno/Mephisto/Ephesto/Texano/Terrible vs Mascara Dorada/Fantasma/Rush/Super Porky/Maximo ten man tag. But they probably won’t.

  1. Fantasma had his feud cooled off completely and he’s been away from Arena Mexico for a little while, too. Think he was one of the 4 who got a tryout? Also Cubs, you’ve got Bucanero over Rush in the results, but said Rush has now beaten the last 2 light heavyweight champs. So, Rush won last night, right?

  2. @Victor Sosa: I was wondering the same thing about Fantasma. We’ve got Mistico, Diamante, “the rudo who had been a tecnico and has issues with MIstico” that Cesar referenced, and a mysterious fourth luchador. I would think that Fantasma would have as good of a shot as anyone at landing a contract offer since he has a decent build, and I seem to remember him speaking decent English. If we find out that he has a hot girlfriend in Mexico City, its a lock!

  3. @Alan: Wasn’t facebook created for stalking missions like this?

CMLL TV starts with the battle royale to decide teams. Cameras have missed every elimination so far.

  4. The main part of the Fantasma/Mephisto feud was in November and December, so if Fantasma had a WWE tryout in october, the feud was not cooled down afterwards.

Since Diamante is dating the daughter of Negro Casas (or is married to her if Wikipedia is correct), she could be a strong reason to stay at CMLL, so he could be meant with this.

By the way, I think Superluchas has deleted the Amodelaluchalibre column, so perhaps the whole article was not correct.

  5. Overall that CMLL show looked to be a ton of fun, Magnus continues to be the man to go to for a huge dive. Also, I am loving Fuego ditching the top half of his costume so he just has tights, looks so much better. Just from pictures the National Tourney final looked to be pretty nuts so I’m definetly excited to see that.

  6. No mention of Mistico on Noti CMLL. They did list the prices for H2L though and those are expensive prices for a show with one weak match announced. I think the prices will change soon. They also announced the main event even though the main event angle won’t happen until later in this TV show. Oopsie.

  7. It’s so sad watching the tag tournament on TV today (which was good, much better than last week’s mess) because there are so many guys in that tournament who could carry the load for CMLL and form a fantastic roster yet instead we know the promotion is just going to base things around everyone but them. The Diamante, Misterioso, Sombra and Volador match was great. Toss in Valiente, Dorada, Psicosis, Fantasma, Mephisto and what’s wrong with putting them as the top guys? You just need some smart bookers to make it work and voila.

  8. @Rob: What were the prices? Hopefully not as high as they were the last couple of years. If I remember correctly, both of those were quite a bit more than the Perro vs Garza year, and all three of them had bigger main events.

  9. @Ringo: But CMLL supposedly didn’t know about any of the try outs until about a month ago, so the timing would make sense there. That being said, in the last year, Fantasma has had the Garza feud dropped, and went from being at the center of the feud with the independents to barely being mentioned in it, so he probably doesn’t have to do anything to have his feuds disappear.

I do like the theory that Diamante is the one who turned down a contract and is the one that people are most certain was punished at this point. That has a certain CMLL logic to it.

  10. YAY Bengala! But also I want to see Astro Boy’s neat Astro Special into a headscissors on the floor.

@Alan: I’d have to rewatch but just from memory the prices ranged from $450 down to $40.

  11. Yeah Astro boy’s move was pretty awesome. Looked like a Dorada move.

The GDL feed seems to be down.

  12. @Rob: OK, that sounds closer to the Perro vs Garza prices, which makes more sense. It is still going to be a worse match, has less star power, and should draw a lot less, but it is quite a bit less than it was for either Guerrero vs Villano or last year’s tag match.

  13. @Alan: I can’t imagine the expensive tickets will sell well. Who is going to pay for Maximo and Porky in hair matches when you are guaranteed to see them in a hair in another couple of months at fan appreciation prices? They’ll have to dramatically lower prices or add another top match (that is actually worth a damn). Maybe turn it into a cage match with Rush, Negro, Bucanero and Garza.

  14. I don’t understand what the fuck CMLL is thinking Homenaje is one of their big shows and it sounds like a regular Friday night card. What about a singles match with Texano and Maximo. Let’s face it Porky sucks and is only good for comedy. The crowds are not coming because the same crap is being dished out week in and week out.

They can no longer tease matches for years and the fact is hey dont have too. Before when they did not own trademarks on their wrestlers names, the wrestlers called the shots since they could ask a kings ransom to drop their mask. But now with the exception of a few guys they own these dudes and should be able to have one mask vs mask fight a year. Hair vs Hair don’t mean squat since these guy grow hair like apes.

  15. ACM has Golden Boy, Rey Demonio Jr., Simbolo b Desafio, Principe de Oro, Sky from 2/15. Wow, I didn’t even think they taped the Tuesday shows?

  16. Okay I know wrestling and logic does not always go together, in fact it is rare, but still. So what in the blue heck is up with someone going to a try out if they are not actually willing to take the contact offered because of their girlfriend? did they suddently remember they had a girlfriend? Or perhaps it was only an execuse because he was hoping for more cash.

  17. Yes, this is a weak 2L main event.

There’s a difference between CMLL and AAA. Yesterday, I turned on AAA at 6:15 and at 7:00 my girlfriend told me that if I turn that shit on again during her weekend, she isn’t coming over anymore. When I watch CMLL with her or friends and family, there is not that sense of embarrassment in the room. That collective “ugh” that there is when AAA is on.

  18. Results are fixed. I bet no one will care about that part of this comment!

This Third Guy (and Possibly A Fourth?) mystery needs to come to an end because the unintentional result is people who are not being involved being suspected who did nothing and the internet sometimes is very effective at turning nothing into something (see Dorian!) The bigger point is we’re not really protecting the third guy at this point, because CMLL knows Mistico went and acted on it (by pulling the covers over their head) and they know Diamante went and acted on it (by taking him off shows for a few weeks – but only after Mistico signed) and they know who the third guy is because Dos Jr. told them all three names. They know, many people know, and multiple people have let me know (because I really don’t know anything.) This is a secret for sake of being a guessing game and that’s silly.

If you were Mistico and wanted to impress the best you could at a WWE tryout, and could take anyone from CMLL to work a singles match with you, who would you take?

    (spoiler space!)

Averno. Used to be tecnico Rencor Latino, flipped to the rudo side to join Satanico, faced Mistico a time or two. There’s been occasional anecdotes over the last six years indicating the two are (or were?) close friends and I probably don’t need to sell you on this anymore because you would’ve guessed if you weren’t just thinking recent tecnico->rudo flips.

My feeling has been that Averno in WWE would be like Psicosis in WCW. He’d have great matches with Mistico in their introductory feud, and they’d have absolutely no idea what to do with Averno after that. Maybe WWE figured the same.

I have no idea if Averno has been punished or will be punished. He is losing all the time to Mascara Dorada, but he’s Averno, he loses quite a bit to high flying tecnicos, it’s kind of his move. And he’s doing in the main event. He’s not in Dos Leyendas, but I think CMLL kind of knows they’ll have to add in a Averno/Dorada stip (title over mask) match and are just hoping they can get away with not doing it. I’m not sure if that says CMLL is currently very cheap or very poor, but it doesn’t say good things.

Anyway, if they take away his title, he’s Averno and they’ll need to give him another one. If they take away his mask, he gets paid for losing his mask, so that’s not much of a punishment.

I have no idea what’s going on with Fantasma. Zero, none. All I know is other guys have had hockey stick like pushes (nearly straight up) and CMLL’s been weirdly hot/cold on him going back to having him drop the welterweight title to Negro. Maybe he has a secret mystery tryout somewhere else too, maybe he has outside the ring issues, maybe CMLL booking is just capricious, maybe they just wanted to cool off the Mephsito/Fantasma issue because they’re now saving it for June or September or December or next March. It feels like there’s a story here, but I have no idea if there actually is one.

  19. It’s on wwe.com, they renamed him Sin Cara. Different colors but doesn’t look that different.

  20. Teleformula has top 3 from GDL. Good work Felino.

Announcers are JCR, Shocker and HORUZ. Guy who’s matches get cut from this show is announcing this show, how odd.

  21. I probably jumped to the conclusion that Averno was the one who turned the contract down because of a girlfriend back hom?

  22. I have no idea (even if it’s true), but the Diamante guess would’ve been the one I made.

  23. I put down the Angie Roux’s article because it was very wrong. 80% of it was a “Lucha Libre for Idiots” text, and the rest was an “I already know all about the Místico’s tryout” bit (juts like César wrote in the same topic AFTER Súper Luchas #399).
There’s no fourth guy. Three CMLL wrestlers have the tryout. WWE offered a contract ONLY to Místico and an independent wrestler: Hijo del Médico Asesino.
I think Angie is referring to Sombra as the guy with a girlfriend, but he don’t have a tryout.
Anyway, why do you want to have a tryout with WWF (risking your job in CMLL) if you don’t want to live in USA?
In fact, you can stay in México even if you work for WWE. Super Crazy was living in Tulancingo during all his WWE run.
