I had to wait until Informa to figure out who won the main event: Porra Fresa oddly didn’t list and neither media outlet mentioned it. The brief highlights on Informa served a purpose.

Blue Shark is an unmasked wrestler, and apparently earned his wrestler’s license last year.

Soberano beat Mistico cleanly after a setup by Euforia, and Mistico pointed out Soberano wouldn’t have his father’s help on Friday.

The main event was a lot of fun. Atlantis looked better in the semimain until he tried to do the Atlantida for the finish, and they had to improvise another finish.

Villano III Jr. did wrestle here, and is doing appearances for CMLL this weekend. No idea why, but he did a dramatic bit where he walked out of Informa last week and that may have not been cleared in advance.

CMLL Informa announced Block B on Copa Indepdencia

Copa Independencia Block B (09/08)

CMLL is holding a post-Aniversario after party at Club Los Angeles starting at 8pm. More info is here. CMLL seemed to say they were going to debut a new wrestler at the party. I guess they technically said they were going to debut a “new personage,” so it could be a mascot or something.

Updated 09/23 Fantastica Mania UK talent list

  • Atlantis Jr.
  • Magia Blanca
  • Hechicero
  • Okumura
  • El Audaz
  • Capitan Suicida
  • Sangre Imperial
  • Zandokan Jr.
  • Guerrero Maya Jr. – new
  • Titan – new
  • Ultimo Guerrero – new

That’s the complete list. It’s some good additions at the end. Okumura and Sangre Imperial don’t thrill me but it’s a strong lineup otherwise. Atlantis Jr. and Hechicero will also appear on 09/24 ReyPro show.

The 09/29 CMLL show will be the Noche de Campeones show. As always, the matches are determined by fan vote and voting will be done on CMLL’s website. (It wasn’t live as I went to post). These six titles are on the line this year:

  • the CMLL Women’s Championship, which is vacant. The top two vote gets of Skadi, Zeuxis, Hera, Stephanie Vaquer, Amapola, and La Catalina will meet for the vacant title.
  • Mercurio will defend the CMLL Pequeno Estrellas championship against Angelito, Minos or Pierrothito.
  • Barbaro Cavernario will defend the CMLL Light Heavyweight championship against Averno, Esfinge or Dark Panther
  • Los Atrapasuenos (Rey Cometa, Espiritu Negro and Dulce Gardenia) defend the Mexican National Trios championship against Zandokan, Villano III Jr. and Hijo del Villano III or Apocalipsis, Disturbio and Cholo or Enfermero Jr., Dr. Karonte Jr. I, and Dr. Karonte Jr. II
  • Titan will defend the CMLL World Welterweight Championship against Fugaz, Mascara Dorada or Astral
  • Mistico will defend the (NWA) World Historic Middleweight Championship against Virus, Dragon Rojo Jr. or Star Jr.

I didn’t have strong feelings about who should win last year. I do feel stronger this year. Mistico versus Virus on a big stage in 2023 would be fascinating. It’s also unlikely; Dragon Rojo coming out of the Aniversario show figures to get a lot of support. Titan defending against Mascara Dorada is the obvious pick there, as is Atrapsuenos versus Zandokan and the Villanos. (That seems like the most likely title change of the defended titles.) Either Averno or Dark Panther would be good Barbaro Cavernario challengers, but CMLL runs big Averno singles matches and they don’t run big Dark Panther ones, so that’s the one I’d prefer here.

The women’s match is fascinating. The women always get a lot of votes in these contests, but the structure of it promotes more voting. About half of these matches are decided on quickly, with one person/team running away with it. There’s less of a motivation to vote. The women’s match is top two, and so that’s going to keep fans voting in it longer and more often than the other categories. (That match will almost certainly main event this show based on having the most votes.) The fan support for the women doesn’t always line up with how they’re pushed in CMLL. I think the default expectation is Zeuxis and Vaquer in the final, but Hera and even Skadi have fanbases, and Catalina has left over WWE fans who she can mobilize if she so chooses. Be prepared for an unusual champion to come out of all of this.

In other IWRG news, Super Comando, Mocho Cota Jr. and Tito Santana are the IWRG IC Trios champions. They won the titles in Nuevo Laredo from Espartaco, Latino and Tempestad, who I forgot even had the titles until I saw the poster.

Mas Lucha announced they’ll have their annual Torneo Supremo on October 15th.

Big Lucha will start putting up their most recent show on Thursday.

The Cassandro movie will open New York’s Latino Film Festival on 09/15. It’s supposed to be in theatres that day as well. That’s a Friday with no CMLL show, and I guess I’m probably going to the movies to see a luchador instead if it’s available near me. No promises to live tweet the results. El Paso will get a screening on the 12th.

Segunda Caida watched Panamian wrestling and gets tied up by a lot of Spider-Man.

Box y Lucha 3566 has a lot of things on the cover. Box y Lucha also released another bunch of 1957 Box y Luchas, though not exactly following along from the last ones. This is the fifth week in a row, so now it’ll be weird if it didn’t have one.

Box y Lucha also tries to explain the history of the Fray Diablo gimmicks. This is what I understood:

  • Fray Diablo I (2018) becomes Misericordioso
  • Fray Diablo II (2018) becomes Fray Diablo Jr. (2nd) then Humilde Jr.
  • Fray Diablo II (2021) becomes Neylux
  • Fray Diablo I (2022)
  • Porthos becomes Fray Diablo II (2023) then Fray Diablo Jr. (2023)

A blah show. Sobearno’s rudo antics were the most interesting thing on the show, maybe the only interesting thing on the show. Ultimo Guerrero and Averno doing little at all before their apuesta match was weird, but maybe a product of a late sub.

Mascara Dorada explained on Instagram that he tested positive for COVID; which explains his absence from Tuesday and this show. He was also originally advertised for the upcoming Tuesday Guadalajara show and pulled from that. He is advertised on next Friday’s show. Other names have quietly been removed from shows; I’m not sure if there are others who tested positive or if it’s a coincidence.

6th defense, first since Sep 2022. Double pin finish after Takahashi attempts at winning via foul fouled. Mistico wanted to restart the match, but Hirmou refused. Mistico proposed going to Japan to challenge Takahashi for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

CMLL streamed this whole show for members, after previously saying it’d just be the title match. The show was overall better than Friday but you really don’t have to go out of your way to watch it. Mistico versus Takahashi was Hiromu playing heavy rudo, so much that it never really felt like a big serious title match. It was fun for Takahashi to play the Mistico enemy of the month, but it also never turned into something more than that (like the Mistico/Titan match did.)

NJPW major singles champions don’t lose singles matches outside of NJPW and Takahashi winning Mistico’s title wouldn’t make much sense, so a draw was the only way to get out of it. It didn’t look like the match up meant anything extra to attendance.

5) Místico vs Soberano Jr.

Mistico beat Soberano Jr. in a singles match in Arena Puebla last month and beat Soberano Jr. last year in Copa Jr.  It’s the first full length match they’ll do in Arena Mexico

Dorada/Tempalrio versus Dragon Rojo/Titan builds towards the Aniversario match. Copa Independence had been announced earlier, but Villano III was part of that group and Polvora is in his spot now. Match Two is Crixus and Vegas filtering into the regular matches.

CMLL and the NFL’s Denver Broncos did a co-promotion last month in Arena Mexico. It’s apparently continuing from there, as CMLL announced. The Broncos’ mascot Miles and “five of his friends” will do something with Tony Salazar before the 09/08 show as a promotional event. In exchange, Mistico, Volador Jr., Atlantis Jr. and Templario will head to Denver for an exhibition match prior to the 10/22 Broncos game against the Packers. There’s a commemorative t-shirt as part of the event and a special Mexico-themed Denver Broncos jersey will be sold in October.

Dragon Rojo talked about his workout and dieting routine with Heraldo Deportes.

AAA

AAA held a press conference on Monday afternoon. There was a brief Komander interview to promote the 09/23 show in Mexico City, but most of the attention was on Heroes Inmortales. AAA ran Guadalajara’s Fiestas del Octobre fair last year, and it was one of their best-attended shows of the year. (That was the show with Laredo, Vikingo, and Taurus and the great crowd shows that are a part of Vikingo’s AEW entrance video.) AAA and Fiestas del October are working together again this year, running a show on 10/01 as this year’s Heroes Inmortales. The lineup leaves a little bit to desired.

AAA TV (SUN) 10/01/2023 Auditorio Benito Juárez, Zapopan, Jalisco [HBO Max press release]
***Heroes Inmortales, 2023***
1) Mini Vikingo, Mr. Iguana, Niño Hamburguesa vs Dinámico, Kamik-C, Skalibur

4) Dalys & Negro Casas vs Abismo Negro Jr. & Flammer [AAA MIXED TAG]
5) Hijo Del Vikingo & Myzteziz vs Dralistico & La Bestia Del Ring
6) ? vs ??
7) Octagón Jr. & Pentagón Jr. vs Qt Marshall & Sam Adonis

One of the trademarks of recent years of AAA is making sure there’s at least one straight ‘great’ action match on the show. I’m not sure what that is here. I think the guys in the main event believe they can be that, but will instead be called on to do a screwy finish to get more heat on QT. (AAA also aired a vignette on TV where Sam Adonis and Dralistico had a shoving fight, which may also play into the main event somehow.) Beyond that – maybe the opener comedy/spotty opener is the best match on the show? Maybe the three way trios match will be in a way most NGD matches in AAA haven’t been? It’s hard to find the thing to look forward. Good matches or even big matches is not really a concern for AAA on this one though: this is a fair show, most tickets are likely going to be free with admission to the fair, they can do whatever and be fine.

Myzteziz & Hijo del Vikingo versus Dralisico & La Bestia del Ring is terrible. The upcoming Hijo del Vikingo versus Nick Gage match in GCW does not appear to be a good mix of wrestlers but at least Gage is over to that fanbase. Dralistico and Bestia del Ring are not Nick Gage. The one thing we can learn is whatever happened with the LFI guys at TripleMania, Rush and AAA must still be on great terms if they’re booking Besita del Ring on shows.

QT Marshall AEW associate Harley Cameron will be in his corner for the main event. I’m sure she’ll get heat. I’m sure about the same amount of people who knew who Aaron Solo will know Harley Cameron.

Octagon in the main event seems to suggest he’s beating Mecha Wolf, Bestia 666 and Drago to win the AAA Latin American #1 contenders match in Mexico City, but it doesn’t have to make sense that way. It sure doesn’t make sense that there’s another #1 contender’s match happening for the tag titles and La Rebelion aren’t included. (I guess NGD are favored?) Dalys & Negro Casas seem locks to end the nothing title reign of Abismo and Flammer, especially since Flammer now has her singles title. It doesn’t seem worth speculating about the Copa Antonio Pena, since AAA’s taught us that every women’s singles match will just be a bunch of interference.

This show will air on Space and Mexico’s HBO Max live. It’s a week earlier than originally announced, which throws off the TV schedule: the Mexico City show will now air out of order, after this Heroes Inmortales. Out of order is the norm though: the Copa Antonio Pena battle royal will air a week after the final if AAA goes as usual. It’s AAA, it’s fine.

PW Insider, reporting on an Impact talent meeting, says wrestlers were told they would be going to be Mexico in November for a taping with AAA. This will air on Impact’s TV, the reporting is unclear if this will be an AAA TV event as well. Impact taped in Mexico a few times pre-pandemic and seemed to plan to do more in 2020 before the world shut down. It usually meant AAA wrestlers in cameos rather and maybe a match or two on the show, rather than the a full crossover show. Impact hasn’t been bringing AAA wrestlers to their shows, and I don’t believe Laredo Kid or Taurus wrestled on their most recent taping.

QT Marshall defended the AAA Latin America on Friday’s edition of AEW Rampage, then again versus Chuck Mambo on Saturday in the UK’s Progress promotion. AAA acknowledged these defenses in ways they don’t always for non-AAA or AEW TV matches. They’re very invested in the QT stuff.

Myzteziz Jr. was in attendance at Arena Mexico on Friday. It’s normal for AAA wrestlers to watch a CMLL show and vice versa, but it’s unusual for them to put it on social media.

Potro de Oro won the title. Bandido made a surprise appearance to congratulate him post match; he’d been announced as out of the promotion just a few weeks prior.

The Big Lucha/Bandido continues to be nicest breakup ever. It didn’t seem like Bandido was back, but was just showing up to put a happy face on whatever split happened by appearing one more time. Bandido didn’t appear to have a cast or anything on his wrists, so he may be back wrestling soon.

Potro de Oro winning surprised me; Emperador Azteca seemed like the long-term champion. I’ll have to see how it comes across. (Big Lucha hasn’t said when this is going up, but they started to post the last show on the Thursday after it aired.) Big Lucha won all their matches with the CMLL wrestlers but all of them were DQs, which is not a great sign for that relationship. Jack Evans making a save against CMLL wrestlers on the same night he was on AAA’s TV is strange. I could not find a third source to figure out what was happening in match two, though I think both of those match ups are going to apuestas eventually.

IWRG

IWRG (SUN) 08/27/2023 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Mr. Mike, Ovett Jr., Sagitarius b Águila Roja, Amazonika, Rey Astaroth
Mr. Mike replaced Super Boy
2) Noisy Boy & Spider Fly b León Dorado & Mr. Leo
3) Caballero de Plata, Leo Cristiani, Máscara Sagrada Jr. b Karoui, Mosca, Rey Halcón
4) Cerebro Negro, Hip Hop Man, Ivan Rokov b Lolita, Ludark Shaitan, Satania [EdM Trios, semifinal]
5) Gran Pandemónium, Hijo de Pandemónium, Pandemónium Jr. b Hell Boy, Mr. Leo, Shocko [EdM Trios, semifinal]
Mr. Leo (working twice) replaced Puma de Oro.
6) Tonalli & Toxin b Aramis & Hijo de Canis Lupus
Toxin beat Canis Lupus after a mask pull

The main event was said to be just OK, which is under what those guys should be capable. The one advantage of IWRG is it’s an easy to access platform (on non-subscriber weeks), and it’s a chance to have a match in the way they want where people can see it. The match they wanted to have on this night was a b-match.

IWRG , FILL (TUE) 08/29/2023 Arena Naucalpan

2) Amazonika & Hatana vs Dehyna & Kali
3) Adrenalina, Cheff Benito, Súper Cometa vs Milagro, Rey Gato, Sumed Black
4) Arceus, Ryu, Tornado vs Black Shadow Jr., Rey Esparatno, Thunder Storm
5) Águila Oriental, Águila Roja, Axoltol, Fussion, Ovett Jr., Rey Astaroth, Súper Boy vs Belial, Black Killer, Caudillo Jr., Dracula Jr., Leyenda Oscura, Misterio Azul, Vali [Copa High Power]
FILL vs Gym Explosion (Tehuacan)

Mas Lucha says they’ll stream this show live on Tuesday, which is different from recent trainee shows. I want to know how Belial ended up representing a gym from Tehuacan.

Other Notes

On Saturday, DMT Azul and Forastero had a match in Arena Lopez Mateos that had a couple of unusual occurrences. They brawled into the crowd, which is anything but unusual, and a fan ran up to Azul and lightly shoved him from behind. The fan appeared to be very drunk. Azul turned around and went after the fan until security swarmed the situation. A commissioner stopped the match because Azul attacked the fan, but that happened many minutes later and maybe after the planned finish (DMT Azul blatantly fouling Forastero.) It read Saturday like maybe Arena Lopez Mateos had ‘discovered’ a new way to get out of all the main event matches they do without a finish. On Sunday on video, it was more clear it was a drunk fan and a commission acting slowly.

Following Sunday’s All In PPV, AEW’s MJF was asked about other international locations he’d like to run. He immediately mentioned Estadio Azteca, professing an unexpected giant love for Mexico and Mexican culture. (MJF does these interviews in-character, but his love of Mexico didn’t fit his normal hatred of everything not Long Island. It was likely a genuine feeling.) Various other international destinations were brought up during the press conference, and AEW chief Tony Khan mentioned they’d be interested in going to all places if it made sense. It’s very unlikely it will make sense for AEW to run Estadio Azteca in the near future; they’ve barely just gotten back on streaming in the country, and they don’t currently have enough of a Mexico fanbase to help fill an 80K building. All In London had a television presence in the UK for years. AEW can revisit this idea when they get that sort of longevity – and when they can go at least one show without the Mexican fans complaining about the commentary.

It would also take AEW booking around a top Mexican star for an extended period. AEW has many great Mexican wrestlers who can be stars, but are mostly there to have an entertaining match and be at least somewhat credible before losing to the actual top stars. Orange Cassidy defends the AEW International Championship against Penta on Wednesday; it will be a shock if Penta wins. I don’t think an AEW show in Mexico City should be lots of Mexican wrestlers or outsiders added in. The success of All In London was because it was the AEW roster for the most part, not because they pandered to the live audience with lots of wrestlers. You do still need some stars, they had Will Ospreay as a top star, and they need someone like that for Mexico. AEW has people who could fill that role, but they need to be positioned in a more special way for a lot longer to get there.

AEW also mentioned they’ll be running WrestleDream on 10/01 in Seattle. It’s an Antonio Inoki tribute show but it also appears to be the start of another annual PPV. Khan mentioned he talked to NJPW about participating and expects they will participate. The ripple effect of it the Mexican talent may be de-emphasized for that PPV cycle since they’re unable to wrestle NJPW wrestlers due to NJPW/CMLL agreement. It appears dependent on if the shows are billed as “AEW WrestleDream” or “AEW/NJPW WrestleDream”; NJPW seems to object if they’re promoting the show, but not if they’re simply sending talent. This situation does feed into the above problem: it’s really hard to build a Mexican wrestler into a top star if they have to disappear for one or two PPVs a year, and it’s probably something that needs a resolution before AEW can consider running Mexico at Estadio Azteca level.

CMLL

CMLL (FRI) 08/25/2023 Arena México
1) Brillante Jr., Leono, Oro Jr. vs Dr. Karonte I, Dr. Karonte II, Raider
2) Fuego, Robin, Valiente Jr. vs Apocalipsis, Cholo, Disturbio

6) Máscara Dorada, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Hiromu Takahashi, Soberano Jr., Titán [Relevos Increíbles]

How did this card end up on Friday and the Takahashi/Mistico match end up on Sunday? It’s a mystery. This main event should still be really good. The semimain will be interesting to see if there’s a next step for the Infernales split. Villanos and Zandokan are back together again. This is the usual iPPV.

ESTO has an interviews with Reina Isis and Magnus.

CMLL (SAT) 08/26/2023 Arena Coliseo
1) Acero, Aéreo, Galaxy vs Mercurio, Pequeño Polvora, Pequeño Violencia
2) Astral, Cachorro, Eléctrico vs Disturbio, Nitro, Vegas
3) Diamond, El Audaz, Hombre Bala Jr. vs Futuro, Max Star, Neón
4) Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa, Volcano vs El Coyote, Kráneo, Pólvora
5) Soberano Jr. & Titán vs Gran Guerrero & Stuka Jr.
6) Ángel de Oro, Dragón Rojo Jr., Niebla Roja vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Hiromu Takahashi, Terrible

CMLL is sure not into booking Titan and Hiromu as a team.

CMLL (SUN) 08/27/2023 Arena México

6) Atlantis Jr. & Volador Jr. vs Stuka Jr. & Templario
7) Místico © vs Hiromu Takahashi [NWA MIDDLE]
6th defense, first since Sep 2022.

Seven matches is a lot for a card, and really for a Sunday show.

CMLL (MON) 08/28/2023 Arena Puebla
1) Blue Shark & Meyer vs Hijo del Perverso & Rencor
2) Reyna Isis vs Zeuxis
3) Pegasso & Rey Samuray vs El Coyote & Okumura
4) Fugaz & Stigma vs Magnus & Rugido
5) Euforia vs Hechicero
6) Averno, Dragón Rojo Jr., Volador Jr. vs Ángel de Oro, Templario, Último Guerrero

That’s a big card for a random Monday. The main is the Aniversario guys, Euforia and Hechicero get a singles match, match 4 is not the tag title match but it’s building to it. Match 2 might be a title match set up too.

A story about Diamond keeps popping up, even though it’s months old by now (and I keep neglecting to include it here.) A woman on Instagram, accused Diamond of taking money for risque photos and then never delivering the photos. The woman, fellow model Ximena Star, apparently had enough of a pre-existing relationship with Diamond to get a story about how Diamond desperately needed money to pay for something for his daughter. Star sent the money, and Diamond just ended up blocking her. Diamond hasn’t said anything in response. The original Instagram post is from June 25th, and I assume it keeps getting brought up every few weeks by some outlet because of the photos they can post next to the story.

AAA

AAA will have the final week of TripleMania Mexico City coverage.

AAA also announced their lineup for their next TV taping:

AAA TV (SAT) 09/23/2023 Gimnasio Olímpico Juan de la Barrera, Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal
1) Drago Kid, Dulce Kanela, Mini Vikingo vs Dinámico, Kamik-C, Skalibur
2) Centella vs Chik Tormenta
3) Mr. Iguana & Niño Hamburguesa vs Kento & Takuma
4) Octagón Jr. vs MechawolfDragoBestia 666 [AAA LA, #1 Contenders]
5) Dralistico & Negro Casas vs Argenis & Nicho el Millionario
6) Pagano vs Texano Jr. [ambulance]
7) Hijo Del Vikingo © vs Komander [AAA MEGA]

AAA is finally running Vikingo/Komander after everyone else did it for them, for this same title. Happens. Komander’s treated a non-entity on TV, I don’t know that match is going to draw. It’ll be good still. As best I can figure, this will be the first Megachampionship defense on a regular AAA TV show since 2018.

I have many questions: will they just do the same ambulance match ending with Taurus instead of Aaron Solo? Why are Mecha Wolf and Bestia 666 fighting each other and not wrestling going for the title they care about? Of all things, AAA remembered the Mexapowers feud? Why are they taping seven matches when they normally can only air six? None of this is important but maybe some of it will be good.

Konnan, on the Hass of Wrestling podcast, mentioned he had a kidney donor; he’s been in need of for many years and is currently on dialysis. The article says Konnan is waiting for the donor to lose six pounds. If you listen to the actual podcast, Konnan seems to also say the donor’s kidney still needs to be checked to see if it’s a match. I hope it is for Konnan’s sake; that’s seems like a big hurdle still to jump.

Las Shotas (Jessy Ventura & Diva Salvaje) will appear on the 09/01 The Crash show, which presumably means they’re done with AAA. It seemed like AAA had big plans for the group in 2022, then Mamba left, and the others have only appeared a couple of times this year. The departures fuel a story about AAA bleeding talent, but it’s a promotion that has way too many people under a certain level and would be better if they concentrated more on fewer names. Las Shotas are probably better off going on their own; they’re immediately reuniting with Mamba being also on this show.

6) Aramis & Hijo de Canis Lupus vs Tonalli & Toxin

The main event looks like it’ll be good until the IWRG finish. I’m guessing La Pandemia and the Hip Hop Man trio in the final. Though I guess the story the story they set up previously requires Shocko to make it.

Other News

Long time Monterrey promoter Carlos Elizondo passed away on Thursday. His biggest successes would’ve come in the 80s and 90s, when Monterrey was a hotbed of wrestling and had some huge bouts for their time. Rayo de Jalisco, Matematico and Dr. Wagner Sr. all lost their masks on his shows. He is probably actually responsible for the “CMLL” name, an idea to form a intra-Mexico alliance between promotions that ended up not including Eliozando when it got going.

5) La Catalina, Maligna, Valkiria b Reyna Isis, Sanely, Zeuxis
Valkiria pinned Reyna Isis, setting up a title match next week.
6) Averno, Hiromu Takahashi, Soberano Jr. b Dulce Gardenia, Místico, Titán
Titan didn’t get along with his partners.

Titan and Hiromu did not understand why they were on different teams. No one outside of the programming department really understood that. Cibernetico sounds like it was good with a mess up finish.

Hiromu Takahashi and Mistico will have a title match Sunday in Arena Mexico. They went back and forth on which Sunday, but it looks like they landed on the one coming up in a few days. I believe Mistico’s title will be the one on the line, even though Mistico was the one who beat Hiromu last week. Hiromu/Misticio will probably stream for members.

CMLL announced the participants for the 09/01 block of the Copa Independencia: Fugaz, Esfinge, Difunto, Magia Blanca, Magnua, Rey Cometa, Villano III Jr., Audaz, Furia Roja, Espanto Jr., Futuro and Blue Panther Jr. I’d say about half of those names are realistic picks to win. There does seem to be a focus 2/3/4 match guys, not the veterans who may have been left off.

CMLL also added Audaz, Capitan Suicida, Sangre Imperial and Zandokan Jr. to the list of wrestlers appearing on the 09/23 FantasticaMania UK show. I suspect we’ll start hearing matches next week.

Metalik appeared on Mas Lucha to further talk about his separation from CMLL. I’m not sure why he did; he talked about YouTubers at one point so I suppose something was said on one of those that upset him, but most of his points didn’t make him look great.

Metalik says CMLL (Salvador Lutteroth Camou) said he wanted to bring in Metalik for July and August, and Metalik says he even took less pay then he makes in the US to make it work, but then was told by CMLL (Jose Luis Feliciano) that they didn’t need him in August after all. Metalik says he asked why, and was only told he was free to go to AAA if he wanted. Metalik basically believed Felicano and the programming department undermined ownership. Metalik also criticized CMLL’s attendance outside the Friday shows and how they gave his family bad seats. Metalik says he’s now open to working anywhere, including against AAA wrestlers in ROH/AEW and on AAA itself.

Metalik is also critical of the style of wrestling in CMLL in 2023, feeling the young people do too many highspots and too risky spots. It certainly felt like he was referring to his succesor, Mascara Dorada 2.0, but he later makes an effort to praise him. Metalik says he’s talked to Dorada, Komander and Hijo del Vikingo about them doing too much, and also had discussions with old friends Titan and Barbaro Cavernario about his style.

A thing Metalik hasn’t realized yet is the indie bookings – and the AEW/ROH ones – are from promoters who saw him in his CMLL days and expect that (at some point) he’ll start to go back to the 1000 moves in a match style he was so great at then. It’s now a style he apparently sees as incorrect, having been taught differently in his time in NJPW and (especially) WWE. Metalik informing the world that this 2023 version of Metalik, one who doesn’t do many highspots and doesn’t do many of the more spectacular ones he did in years past, is going to hurt him more than missing out on CMLL bookings. Making more out of less certainly works for some wrestlers, and there’s absolutely Mexican wrestlers who are doing way too much to be effective with they’re doing. 2023 Metalik seems like he’s turned the dial too far the other way, and only stands out in comparison to what he once was.

I don’t know why CMLL told Metalik they weren’t interested in him any more (and it’s not great to promise someone multiple tours and cut them off after one.) I do know that Metalik didn’t do great in that return stint in CMLL; his big match with Titan was shockingly unover. Metalik returning to CMLL had to happen but another trip really didn’t. I do suppose he’ll be back in CMLL some far day in the future. I also suspect he’ll be in AAA before time runs out on the year, though it may not be a long run.

AAA

Vampiro clarified his retirement tease from Sunday. As he’s said previously, he had big plans of some retirement show he wanted to do with AAA, his contract ended, and AAA did not offer whatever it is Vampiro wanted. Vampiro is retired in Mexico but will continue with the NWA (where he says he has a creative role) and has a contract to wrestle in Japan.

It came off like Vampiro would absolutely wrestle in Mexico again for the price/situation he wanted, he figures only AAA would be willing to offer that, and they have not offered it – yet. It’s AAA, they’re always in search of a pop, they’ll probably come to a deal eventually and Vampiro will be back again. AAA hasn’t acknowledged the Vampiro retirement at all, and it’ll be fascinating if it’s on TV. No one knows anything about this “Japan contract” outside of Vampiro.

Friends of Cuatrero will be supporting him by running a show at the jail where he’s being held on Thursday. This includes many members of the current AAA wrestlers. Cuatrero has been in jail since March, on charges of femicide and domestic violence against (then) girlfriend Stephanie Vaquer. He has not been convicted or put on trial; he’s just been held while the investigation has gone on. (I don’t know the Mexican judicial system well enough to know if this is normal; Charly Manson did seem to spend a long time awaiting trial when he had his legal issues.) NGD had and have a very loyal fanbase, much of whom have stuck with Cuatrero in this – and occasionally posted anti-Vaquer comments, accusing her of making her story up. I’m unsurprised to see people Cuatrero worked with supporting him as well, though running a sport show at the prison he’s held in makes especially weird.

IWRG

Thursday’s Naucalpan show is a Lucha Libre Boom card with Cibernetico & Dr. Wagner Jr. versus DMT Azul & Pirata Morgan. That match will be bad, they’ll have a full house anyway. IWRG will have another FILL show on Tuesday.

Other News

I was on the Gentleman’s Podcast talking about the lucha libre scene with Jesse Collings. He was great. My internet was crap and then died, and that’s why I’m finishing this blogging at a Panera instead of typing a lot more words. Anyway, you should go listen if you didn’t get enough words today.

CMLL Sunday results, AAA visits the Showcenter, IWRG

CMLL

Soberano Jr. won a five-way with KC Navarro, Lio Rush, Dragon Kid, and Fugaz at the All Star Junior Festival on Saturday. I saw very little discussion of this show in English; I couldn’t even find English recaps with more than just the results on the weekend. When I searched on Twitter during the show, it was like 95% kanji. Soberano teased surprises in the post-match interview, the way all luchadors tease surprises when they have nothing to say.

Villanos and Zandokan, but they attacked Star Jr. after and stole his trios belt.
6) Místico, Octagón, Valiente b Euforia, Fuerza Guerrera, Mephisto
Valiente and Mistico ended up pulling off Fuerza Guerrera’s mask in a post match exchange, after the rudos had ripped up Misticos’ mask earlier.

This might have been a night of people shooting their own angles. CMLL mentions the main event mask ripping, but not whatever happened with the trios title in match five. I’d love to see that world title trios feud but I wouldn’t expect to see it unless they run another angle. Meanwhile, Mercurio has the longest hair I’ve ever seen on him and he’s getting ripping off a tecnico’s mask, so that seems more likely to set up something.

I missed Friday’s card in the update on Sunday (there was an update on Sunday)

CMLL (FRI) 08/25/2023 Arena México
1) Brillante Jr., Leono, Oro Jr. vs Dr. Karonte I, Dr. Karonte II, Raider
2) Fuego, Robin, Valiente Jr. vs Apocalipsis, Cholo, Disturbio
3) Esfinge, Fugaz, Star Black vs Hijo del Villano III, Villano III Jr., Zandokan Jr.
4) Valiente vs Misterioso Jr. [lightning]

6) Máscara Dorada, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Hiromu Takahashi, Soberano Jr., Titán [Relevos Increíbles]

The main event could be great. Soberano appears to be lowercase ingobernable, which is enough to team with Titan and Takahashi. The Hechicero/Infenrales split returns from a few weeks off in the semimain. Vailente versus Misterioso Jr. is a match that is happening. Villanos/Zandokan continue to be fun a trio. Brillante (the man going 200 KMH at all times) against the Dr. Karontes (men who struggle to keep up at normal speed) could be something. It’s a good show for a regular Friday night.

Wrestling Observer Radio mentioned Stephanie Vaquer may face Stardom’s Giulia on the 10/28 NJPW Strong show in Las Vegas. NJPW previously announced CMLL wrestlers would appear on that card. Giulia is the current NJPW Strong Women’s champion, so the idea is she’d be defending the title against Vaquer.

Giulia being in North America in October opens the possibility she’d come to Mexico for the Women’s Gran Prix that month, similar to how NJPW names doubled up with the Men’s Gran Prix and the All Star show. I’m skeptical that’s actually the plan though; Dark Silueta is wrestling in Ice Ribbon and elsewhere on her current tour, and they’ll probably announce some women are coming back with her when that tour concludes.

AAA

AAA did not post results from the Showcenter card, but long-time Monterrey source Lo Mejor de Lucha did:

AAA TV (SUN) 08/20/2023 Showcenter Complex, San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo Leon [Lo Mejor de Lucha]
1) Baby Love b Reyna Sahori
2) Dulce Kanela b UltraGemelo Tapia
3) Delta, Niño Hamburguesa, The Mummy b Mafioso, Medico Brujo, Toscano
4) Mr. Iguana b EpydemiusBelcegor
Belcegor replaced Octagon Jr. about a week before the show, then broke three toes after a tornillo to the floor.
5) Sexy Star b CentellaLady Maravilla
Added in late July when this was made a TV taping.
6) Pagano & Vampiro vs Antifaz & Chessman
Vampiro replaced Dave the Clown about a week before the show. Alberto el Patron interfered to help Vampiro win. Vampiro left his boots (well, sneakers) in the ring after the match as part of his retirement. It was his second one in Monterrey this year so far.

AAA announced the crowd as close to full, and it did look that way in photos.

AAA didn’t mention Vampiro’s retirement in their (few) tweets about the show, so I’m unsure if even they believe this it. It always seems like he wants it to be it and then he just comes back again. Vampiro just started in NWA, sent out a promo a few days ago, and presumably isn’t going to be leaving that gig.

AAA continued doing live commentary. Their story now appears to be is AAA is aware knowledgeable fans hate it, but they need to do it to help the casual fans. Every wrestling promotion has casual fans who seem to understand the show fine without people explaining every little thing to them. No one has more casual fans than CMLL, they seem to get by OK. (Actually, maybe WWE does have more casual fans because they just have so many more fans. They get by in a totally different way than CMLL but still different than live commentary.) If AAA’s belief is they need the announcers to explain storylines in a way that no other wrestling promotion is doing, that seems like an admission their storytelling is a mess and this is just putting a bandaid on a bigger problem.

AAA also announced they’ll return to the Showcnter on 11/26. Originally, AAA said they were going to run five events in the Showcenter this year. 11/26 would be only the third so five seems unlikely.

I missed it scanning through TV, but AAA announced they’d tape on 09/23 in Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera. It’s billed as “La Revencha de TripleMania.” AAA usually announces lineups a month out, so there’s a decent chance of more information coming this week.

AAA hasn’t run a show in Mexico City’s Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera since 2018, and that was a sponsored show with the Emperador chocolate brand. They led off the 2019 year with a show at Pepsi Center, and the idea then was that would be their new more modern Mexico City home. AAA last ran the Pepsi Center in late 2021, and your guess is as good as mine as why they’re moving to the old base. Taping on 09/23 means AAA will probably air another week of TripleMania Mexico City this upcoming Saturday; it’s the easiest way to make the math work. That Drago match may turn up yet.

IWRG

I was wrong; the Angel Mortal Jr. who wrestled Thursday in Arena Naucalpan was indeed AAA’s Parka Negra reverting to his old gimmick. He didn’t really explain why, just saying he uses the character for special occasions. There was no suggestion he was leaving AAA, this was just a one night thing. I wonder if this was some issue with AAA owning the gimmick but Mortal/Parka wanting to participate on a benefit show anyway.

Toxin beat Hijo de Canis Lupus

I watched this show! Or I had this on while I was reading through 1956 magazines. I thought they were going to do the whole tournament on this show, but the announcers explained the other rounds would happen on future shows. The best bit on this show was in match 4. They played off the recent Cerberos/Mexaboys match, where the Cerberos demanded Spider Fly and Noisy Boy stop doing flips and do llaves because they were in a title match. This time, Cerbero Negro started punching Spider Fly early on and Spider Fly called him out on it, saying punches were not what title matches were about. The match continued for a couple of more minutes, then Spider Fly shocked everyone by reversing a Cerbero Negro hold into a cradle for three. Cerebro Negro lost his mind and had to be held back from murdering Spider Fly. The crowd buzzed because it was way earlier than IWRG matches usually end and everyone figured the team with Hip Hop Man and the Russian guy are going far. And, then it turned out they were right to think that: announcers explained Cerbero Negro wasn’t the captain so the match would continue. IWRG doesn’t typically do capitan fall rules, didn’t do another elimination in the rest of this show, they just did it here so they could do the bit without messing with the results they wanted.

I think Toxin challenged for Hijo de Canis Lupus’ titles but they lost me by then.

Other News

The trailer for the Cassandro bio pic will be released tomorrow.

Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo are teasing something Perros del Mal related in NXT with what they’re putting out on that social media. It would be a big deal to Mexican fans but I think an actual Perros del Mal bit would be lost on most of the NXT audience, who don’t really care much about wrestling outside WWE. (Proof of this is Angel Garza doing this for a week and the English language sites not really picking up on it until I pointed it out.) Kahn-del-Mal controls the Perros del Mal legacy, so it really just takes one person saying yes (and WWE saying yes), but I don’t think it’d end up being what anyone would want it to be. They’d be better off creating something new, but nostalgia plays strong in modern wrestling.

Box y Lucha released another set of 1956s Box y Luchas. They previously released everything from mid August 1956 to mid January 1957, and now they’re going backwards to February and March 1956. I’m kind of in a spot where I’m absolutely buying all of these to recap, but don’t want to post like an August recap incase there’s something in July that lends context to all of this. There may not be full recap posts for a while is what I’m saying.

Site Notes

The “thecubsfan.com” domain is its new home for now. I’ve got until Thursday to cancel the old hosting, but I still need to visually check all the old podcasts are safe before I hit X. It’s just those podcasts and the databases (posts and matches) that I’d really lose sleep over if they ever disappeared. I would suggest is that if you’re ever moving a WordPress site, the DuplicatorPro plug-in was absolutely worth the money. It worked when nothing else seemed to be working.

I’m going to give the new hosting a month or so to make sure it’s OK, but I’ll probably be moving the luchadb and luchawiki sometime this fall. The cost savings is significant and I got to afford those Box y Luchas somehow. (But also that cost savings is so significant that I should probably give it a little time to be sure.) I’ll try to give heads up and pick a slow weekend before any move.

I’m also traveling for work this week and operating on unusual hours, so I don’t know what or when blog posts will look like the rest of the week. It’s not great but I’m just glad I’m not also trying to handle this site move at the same time.

Akki unmasked Titan for the DQ.

Xelhua, the recent debut here, turns out to be the son of former Arena Puebla luchador SWAT. Grada has a Xelhua interview with that detail, saying his father, Ciclon Ramirez and Ultimo Guerrero as his trainers. He’s only 19 years old and talks about the myth from where he pulled his name. I still don’t quite follow how he debuted in Guadalajara first.

45:47. Order of elimination: Adrian Quest (via Angel de Oro), Samuray del Sol (Dragon Rojo), Francesco Akira (Templario), Angel de Oro (Hiromu), TJP (Averno), Templario (Kushida), Baliyan Akki (Ultimo Guerrero), Averno (Rocky Romero), Samuray del Sol (Mascara Dorada), Ultimo Guerrero (Kushida), Rocky Romero (Volador Jr.), Volador Jr. (Kushida), Mascara Dorada (Kushida), Kushida (Mistico), Hiromu Takahashi (Mistico) leaving Mistico as the winner. It is his first Gran Prix win. Rocky Romero kicked and dented the trophy post match, leading to a fight with Mistico.

The Gran Prix worked out to its usual high level. There was a little bit more messiness than usual, but a bit more emotion too. The CMLL fans really wanted to see Mistico make it to the end and they got that. The match was not done in service to the Aniversario card – Dragon Rojo was the first out for his team, Templario not far behind him, and none of the Mexicans had issues. (Samuray del Sol and Rocky Romero did a disagreement bit early on, playing off an angle they ran on Informa where Romero accused Samuray was a spy for the Mexicans, but then they played it straight the rest of the way.) It was the clean, pseudo-sport competition CMLL likes to do and their crowd ate it up. CMLL put over KUSHIDA big for not having him in the final two and constantly talked about Takahashi as a mega star (thanks to his CMLL training.) I don’t think this Gran Prix would make the top 10 matches of the year if you watched in on mute, but the crowd reaction adds so much to it.

The post-match was pure Rocky Romero – it’s not immediately clear if it was a planned angle or something he came up with at the moment in hopes of turning into an angle. It came off as spontaneous and heated.

Soberano/Stuka is very much worth watching. They had great chemistry and the Arena Mexico crowd is so into Soberano. The theatrical bits of Soberano fighting while still in his cape to start the match came off great. The first two falls going short hurt a little bit, but it worked out for the longer-than-expected third fall.

The first two matches were kept pretty short; the show still ended up long. The tag title match was fine, but both those teams really need a tecnico team to play off to be at their best. (Also, CMLL knows Dark Magic isn’t good so they’re prepared to work around him, and they’re less prepared to handle Espanto Jr.)

Samuray del Sol posted a photo of himself in a Mexico City hospital on Saturday night. It wasn’t clear exactly what happened. He did come up short on an attempted springboard dragon rana to the floor during the match, and may have gotten hurt then or at another point, but he appeared fine post-match.

NFL Mexico gave Salvador Lutteroth a plaque in honor of CMLL’s 90th Anniversary.

CMLL (SAT) 08/19/2023 Arena Coliseo [CMLL]
1) Pequeño Olímpico & Pequeño Violencia b Fantasy & Último Dragóncito
2) Apocalipsis, Cholo, Disturbio b Eléctrico, Neón, Valiente Jr.
3) Magia Blanca b Diamond [lightning]
Magia Blanca wins in about 8 minutes.
4) El Coyote, Okumura, Pólvora b Arkalis, Pegasso, Stigma
Arkalis’ first match since February (knee injury)
5) Dark Panther, Star Black, Valiente b Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus
6) Bárbaro Cavernario, Euforia, Terrible b Star Jr., Titán, Volador Jr.

Diamond/Magia Blanca was former Deperdador versus current Depredador.

CMLL announced Hechicero, Atlantis Jr., Magia Blanca, and Okumura as the first names for the 09/23 Fantastica Mania UK show. Atlantis Jr. will also appear on the 09/24 RevPro show in St. Neots, a town I definitely didn’t know of until writing this news bit. RevPro has a big show next Saturday and there will probably be more on this CMLL event after that.

The CMLL world women’s championship is vacant. Princesa Sugehit appeared on Informa on Wednesday, revealing she’d undergone neck surgery on July 1st. It didn’t sound like there was a specific incident that caused the neck injury, just that she had felt in her title match with Zeuxis on April 28th and got it checked out after her last match, back on May 8th. She said it was a serious surgery, and thanked both her doctors and CMLL for the support. She was told the average recovery is six months, but emphasized that it can vary from person to person and she does definitely know when she’ll be able to return at this point. Host Julio Cesar Rivera said Sugehit was not required to give up the belt, and Sugehit explained she really didn’t want to it, but she felt the women’s division would be harmed by not having a world title matches for so long so she needed to give up the belt. Sugehit hoped she’d be the #1 contender when she was able to return (and sounded relatively certain she would return.)

There was no word when or how the new champion would be decided. The simplest solution is to award the title to the winner of the Women’s Gran Prix or the Women’s Universal tournament, both of which are likely to take place in October. It’s also possible CMLL could make it a fan poll-driven thing for Noche of Campeones at the end of September. Fans (or rather, the subset of fans dedicated to voting in polls) deciding who would compete for the vacant champion would be endlessly fascinating for the same reasons it’s probably a terrible idea.

Remember that story from July about how CMLL made Torreon’s Coliseo Tony Arellano an official partner of theirs? It seemed like a thing just around the lightweight tournament, and because they were bringing in CMLL talent anyway, maybe just a one off thing. It’s not a one off thing: Oaxaca’s Alemark Business Group announced a similar partnership with CMLL. Referee/programmer Edgar Noriega appeared with Alemark’s president Carlos Alberto Morales on Wednesday to announce the deal. CMLL wrestlers will appear at Oaxaca’s Arena Coliseo Hades every two weeks going forward. Noriega said there would be possibilities of Oaxacan wrestlers coming to Arena Mexico, and Alemark will also open a training center in Oaxaca. The shows will start on 09/30 with Octagon and Fuerza Guerrera appearing. Alemark has other shows before then, which meant this same CMLL partnership conference also hyped this weekend’s AAA staffed show.

These deals may just be CMLL reviving its relationships with local promoters across Mexico. That’s an area where AAA seems like they do well and CMLL seemed to lose ground in the 2010s. It’d take more than two deals to get there do, just worth watching as a trend.

Speaking of that agreement in Torreon, Arena Coliseo Tony Arellano announced Futuro will defend the Mexican Lightweight title against Platino on their 09/07 show. That looks to be Futuro’s first defense.

In other intriguing but unexplained random CMLL news, Pegasso is apparently training a group of luchadoras in Puebla under the direction of Arena Puebla. An El Sol del Puebla article says Benjamin Mar scouted luchadoras at independent shows in Puebla, offering the best among them a chance to train under at that city’s CMLL school. Arena Puebla has never had Puebla luchadors as a regular part of their shows, and this seems like an attempt to address that. The article points it in a “Puebla luchadora joining the main roster” way, but this could also be adding women’s matches to the Monday shows in the same way they’ve been seen more often in Guadalajara. The CMLL Puebla luchadora project started with twenty women, and eight remain in the program. Those who didn’t show up for training regularly were asked to leave.  Enigmatic, Lady Amazona, Mayahuel are profiled in the article, and Lady Metal is mentioned as being in the group. They feel like the training has helped them improve and it’s also pushed them to improve the scene; if one of the CMLL women can’t make a show, they’re now directing promoters to others in the training group to make sure they’re putting their best foot forward.

There isn’t any definite target date for the Puebla women to debut, and it seems like they haven’t been guaranteed anything. Debuting one or more of them in October makes sense with CMLL’s focus. I also think it’s a genuine possibility CMLL might run an all women’s show in Arena Mexico in October. They’ve definitely got the numbers if they’ve got women training in Puebla in addition to Guadalajara and Mexico City, it’s a matter of belief that their fans will be OK with the star power enough to buy tickets (or if the positive attention they’ll get will be worth whatever lost revenue.) I don’t think a CMLL women’s show is a lock, but it’s gone from no chance to some chance.

Leon’s Gallero (seen in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara) talked to his hometown paper about wrestling in the United States. He’s working a lucha show in Houston.

CMLL announced Elsa Lutteroth Camou passed away on August 15th. There’s no more information beyond the name, but the “Lutterotth Camou” suggests she’s the daughter of EMLL founder Salvador Lutteroth. That would make her the second second-generation member of that family to pass away recent, following Enrique Lutteroth Camou passing away back on May 31st. Enrique was 96, so Elsa was likely around the same age. The older second Salvador (Chavo) Lutteroth, the brother of Elsa and Enrique, may still be part of the team running CMLL right now but it’s been over a year since he’s made an appearance.

CMLL announced during the Friday PPV that all numbered tickets (lower bowl) were sold out. That wasn’t quite true when I checked after. It may be less than 10 now, enough they could probably get that partial sell out if they just pushed it on social media (instead of just on the PPV.)

CMLL (SUN) 08/20/2023 Arena México
1) Angelito, Kaligua, Pequeño Magía vs Mercurio, Minos, Pequeño Polvora
2) Astral, Cachorro, Robin vs Dr. Karonte I, Enfermero Jr., Inquisidor
3) Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Volcano vs Akuma, Crixus, Raider

5) Dark Panther, Star Black, Star Jr. vs Hijo del Villano III, Villano III Jr., Zandokan Jr.
6) Místico, Octagón, Valiente vs Euforia, Fuerza Guerrera, Mephisto

Octagon and Fuerza are back to help fill out the card. A bunch of CMLL names are on a tour of northern Mexico this weekend and early next week, so they could use the extra people.

CMLL (MON) 08/21/2023 Arena Puebla
1) Amnesia, Black Tiger, Blue Shark vs Espíritu Maligno, King Jaguar, Rencor
2) La Magnifica & Sanely vs Reyna Isis & Zeuxis
3) Fuego, Pegasso, Rey Samuray vs El Coyote, Okumura, Pólvora
4) Fugaz, Stigma, Valiente vs Magia Blanca, Magnus, Rugido
5) Bárbaro Cavernario, Hechicero, Místico, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Hiromu Takahashi, Soberano Jr., Titán [Relevos Increíbles]

Takahashi is in the US on the weekend but is back in Mexico for a few days after.

Blue Shark is a new name. There was a Blue Shark in Hidalgo in the 2010s, but his name hasn’t turned up since 2019.

CMLL (TUE) 08/22/2023 Arena México
1) Fantasy, Shockercito, Último Dragóncito vs Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito
2) Amapola & Tiffany vs Hera & Olympia
3) Arkalis, Pegasso, Stigma vs Akuma, Dark Magic, Espanto Jr.
4) Felino vs Virus [lightning]

6) Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja © vs Star Jr. & Volador Jr. [CMLL TAG]
11th defense

That title match seems to come out of nowhere but it could be pretty good. Virus has leaped past Felino in the “getting booked in legend’s matches” category, but I’m less sure about the results.

CMLL (TUE) 08/22/2023 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Eclipse Jr., Obek, Último Ángel vs Fúnebre, Infierno, Mortis
2) Micro Gemelo Diablo I, Micro Gemelo Diablo II, Micro Sagrado vs Átomo, Chamuel, Periquito Sacaryas
3) Ángel Rebelde, Gallero, Halcón Negro Jr., Optimus, Trono vs Crixus, Futuro, Max Star, Neón, Vegas [cibernetico]
4) Magia Blanca & Rugido vs Barboza & Zandokan Jr.
5) Reyna Isis, Sanely, Zeuxis vs La Catalina, Maligna, Valkiria
6) Dulce Gardenia, Místico, Titán vs Averno, Hiromu Takahashi, Soberano Jr.

It’s weird Titan and Hirmou aren’t teaming here, but I guess the idea is Soberano is still a rudo here.

AAA

AAA aired part two of TripleMania, which turned out be just the Copa Bardahl. The women’s trios match and the Drago/Jack Evans vs Belcegor/Abismo Negro pre-show match haven’t aired on Space. I assume they’re just being skipped but maybe we need to check the listings next week to see if AAA is instead airing a third week of TripleMania.

AAA never put up the missing 3m30s of footage from the Copa Bardahl; the feed went out on both the Spanish and English feeds, and that’s still the way it is on FITE. I put up the missing footage on streamable, and a quick summary:

  • Octagon Jr. beats Myzteziz with a 450 splash
  • (feed goes out)
  • Octagon Jr. shoves Willie Mack off the top rope to the floor
  • Arez pins Octagon Jr.
  • Komander tricks Arez and bodyscissors him over the top rope to the floor
  • Komander & Laredo sequence goes about 45 seconds while they cut to Octagon Jr., Willie Mack, Arez
  • (feed comes back)

AAA missed about half of Arez’s finish cutting to a dive too late, and then were cutting away from pinfalls to show people drinking the sponsor’s drink. AAA probably could’ve cleaned that up in editing. I didn’t spend much time comparing shots, but AAA did change the angle on the Pagano bump to hide the impact (and make it look more dramatic.) The rest of the show was the usual backstage generic promos to the camera that don’t seem to go anywhere and a bunch of post-match interviews originally meant to be for social media exclusives.

AAA announced an attendance of 15,583 for TripleMania. That’s up from the 14,100 they announced last year. It did not appear more full on TV, though that may be because AAA’s production drew attention to the ringside empty seats early in the show. (The photos from inside the building also showed more empties than expected for 15,853, though it’s possible those were sold and just empty.) WWE reportedly had 15,500 people at their Mexico City show just a few weeks earlier, at much higher ticket prices and without the 2 for 1 discounts AAA was using in the last few days.

Pagano did end up wrestling Sunday following TripleMania in Juarez, so he’s fine. Or as fine as he ever is.

AAA has its next TV taping today at the Showcenter. This card has gone through at least three public versions, and here’s where they’re at now:

AAA TV (SUN) 08/20/2023 Showcenter Complex, San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo Leon
1) Reyna Sahori vs Baby Love
2) Dulce Kanela vs UltraGemelo Tapia
3) Delta, La Momia, Niño Hamburguesa vs El Líder, Medico Brujo, Toscano
4) Mr. Iguana vs EpydemiusBelcegor
Belcegor replaced Octagon Jr. about a week before the show.
5) Sexy Star vs CentellaLady Maravilla
Added in late July when this was made a TV taping.
6) Pagano & Vampiro vs Antifaz & Chessman
Vampiro replaced Dave the Clown about a week before the show

Alberto el Patron is also scheduled to appear. Vampiro added late suggest tickets weren’t moving much here, but it looks fine in the Superboletos ticket app; about 75-80 sold. This card still feels like a Lucha Time show. This seems like a cheap way of making some TV and nothing more, but maybe match four will be good.  Vampiro spoke to children in Monterrey early in the week. The thing to watch this show is not the matches but if AAA backs off the commentary over the sound system at all; the negativity on it reached a tipping point with TripleMania and dropping it would be a sign AAA’s willing to listen.

Hijo del Vikingo pulled off this weekend’s GCW shows. I’m still under the belief that Vikingo passing out at the TripleMania post show press conference was a staged bit. Vikingo is working a hard schedule between Mexico and the US and a hard style to keep up with; it’s totally believable Vikingo is really beat up and needs some post-TripleMania time off (and even that the passing out was a way to explain that.) AAA and AEW seem like they should be plenty of work for Vikingo without taking additional bookings and I’m surprised he’s still doing as much, but it’s also hard to say no if people are offering you money that wasn’t available to you two years ago.

EMW announced Marty Scurll will appear on their 09/30 AAA spot show. The funniest part of this was Scurll filming a video to promote his big return to wrestling and then revealing it was this show, an untelevised event that will cease to exist in most people’s memories three days after the show exists. Anyone on social media who is upset about this booking doesn’t understand how Mexican wrestling non-televised shows work, just see an AAA name on it and believe they’re personally booking Scurll. That’s not even necessarily wrong here – Konnan’s booking EMW – but if AAA in general is going to get complaints for booking him either way, why just book him for the Tijuana shows. Maybe AAA should have a corporate policy about being involved with people who have been blackballed from the rest of the wrestling industry but aren’t under any charges rather than make seemingly random decisions depending on the town.

IWRG did make the effort of posting a bunch of videos to explain the teams in the tournament: one with Hell Boy and Shocko, another with Cerebro Negro, Ludark pitching her team, Imposible and Relampago thinking about a parnter and Caballero de Plata offering to be that third member, and Centvrion, Gannicus and Rey Espartano forming a similar gimmick trio. This would work better if it happened on the shows instead of social media videos but so it goes in 2023.

IWRG is going with “the title was vacated for no defenses in 120 days.” La Pandemia previously went six months without defending those same belts (due to injury) and those belts weren’t stripped. The Navarros have gone years without defending the IWRG trios belts. It’s an IWRG title, no one really cares.

El Heraldo del Saltillo talks to Arena Pavillon del Norte owner Jacinto Escalante de Leon. He bought the arena 17 years ago when it had been shut down for wrestling and used for other business. They celebrated his 17th Anniversary on Saturday with CMLL talent coming in. They also honored luchadora Lady Star and (deceased) referee Francisco Nino. Lady Star is said to be the first luchadora honored in such a way in that arena, for also being the first luchadora from Saltillo to wrestle in CMLL back in 1991.

Engendro Infernal II and Engendro Infernal III lost their masks to Arquitecto del Mal II and Arquitecto del Mal III in Arena Aficion on Tuesday. The Engendros are Enrique Vazquez Chavez, 44, 24 years a wrestler, and Jose Enrique Rodriguez Sanchez, 38, 20 years a wrestler. Both are from Neza. They probably also have worked under different names; I don’t have any results from them outside of this feud.

Kento and Takuma regained the DTU Nexo Tag Team titles on Thursday in Tulancingo, dethroning Fight Panther Jr. and Aero Panther.

There’s a new lucha libre photo exhibition on the streets of Puebla.

Box y Lucha 3564 has too much on the cover. Box y Lucha also released a third set of magazines from 1956, now into 1957. I’m about nine behind now from just reading them, much less writing about them.

RIOT’s next show is 10/21, a (unserious) benefit show for the promotional mascot Tablon (a block of wood.)
