CMLL

In Puebla, Robbie Eagles submitted Soberano Jr. to the Ron Miller special, setting up a singles match between them. It would probably be a good Informa question to ask about Ron Miller. CMLL keeps referring to Robbie Eagles’ finishes by name in a way they don’t do with their own wrestlers, so maybe it would help to explain the name.

CMLL (FRI) 08/12/2022 Arena México
1) Micro Gemelo Diablo I & Micro Gemelo Diablo II vs Átomo & Chamuel
2) Guerrero Maya Jr., Pegasso, Stigma vs Akuma, Dark Magic, Espanto Jr.

4) Atlantis, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Hechicero, Templario
5) Dragón Rojo Jr. © vs Robbie Eagles [CMLL MIDDLE]
first defense

Robbie Eagles is the favorite in the title match, though not as far as it being a lock. Not a lot of support on the card. The semi-main may set up next week’s Hechicero/Euforia title match, but that’s about it. No sign of the anniversary feuds this week.

CMLL (SAT) 08/13/2022 Arena Coliseo
1) Fantasy, Pequeño Magía, Último Dragóncito vs Mercurio, Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Polvora
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Oro Jr., Valiente Jr. vs Dr. Karonte I, Dr. Karonte II, Enfermero Jr.
3) La Guerrera, La Magnifica, Skadi vs Hera, La Seductora, Tiffany
4) El Audaz, Panterita del Ring, Star Jr. vs El Coyote, Felino, Rey Bucanero
5) Negro Casas, Robbie Eagles, Stuka Jr. vs Cavernario, Dragón Rojo Jr., Templario

Eagles still matched up with Dragon Rojo after the show. Halcon Suriano turns up for the first since May. He’s been wrestling at times in Torreon, but there’s enough gaps that it could be an injury.

CMLL (SUN) 08/14/2022 Arena México
1) Acero, Aéreo, Shockercito vs Full Metal, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Robin, Sangre Imperial vs Grako, Inquisidor, Nitro
3) Dark Panther, Flyer, Hombre Bala Jr. vs Kráneo, Magnus, Okumura
4) Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa vs Cancerbero, Luciferno, Pólvora
5) Euforia, Robbie Eagles, Stuka Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Titán, Último Guerrero

A show. In my head, I keep thinking the other Gran Prix guys should be showing up on these cards before the actual match. That’s a bad memory; the forgieners really didn’t show up until just before the show in 2018 and 2019. They did come in early in 2017. Tiger Mask and Rocky Romero are booked on next Thursday’s card in Arena Coliseo so it’s possible they’ll come in a little early, but mostly there’s a lot of killing time this week until that show.

Esfinge will be out 4 weeks after fracturing his right hand. His hand broke on his own moonsault, just from connecting with Angel de Oro’s knee on the impact. That seems very random. CMLL’s used random partners to fill out OneAtos Team with Fugaz & Star Black so far this week.

CMLL Informa has Atlantis, Fuerza Guerrera, Robbie Eagles, and Mesias. That’s about who’d you expect; I’d guess all the apuesta participants will make at least one more appearance on Informa before the Aniverasrio.

AAA

AAA did a 3 hour spaces discussion on TripleMania and Verano de Escandalo on Tuesday night. I lasted about an hour twenty before taping out live; it was much longer than I expected. I listed to more of it today. Hugo, Jose, and Oscar Manuel hosted. Konnan (about 45 minutes in) and Penta (1h37m) were guests. It was mostly kayfabe at the start but Konnan on a podcast doesn’t really do that much.

AAA did announce during the show that they’d start putting up Verano de Escandalo on YouTube and Facebook this week. It’ll just be part 1 this week, and part 2 next week. Right now, part 2 of Ciudad Madero and both parts of Mazatlan haven’t gone up on YouTube. It’s probably a good idea to get Verano up ASAP and skip two tapings that didn’t have too much important on them, but it’s got to be rough to follow this promotion only on their YouTube channel with weeks just never turning up. I’ve got keep doing the Twitch/Drive stuff so matches don’t disappear into a void.

The Konnan segment wasn’t positive to listen to; whatever mic he was using was also picking up every noise around him, so at times it seemed like we hearing more of what seemed like a television broadcast of a baseball game or a person dropping off food than anyone on the call. Anyone else would’ve gotten politely asked to go to a quieter place or mute the TV but it’s Konnan so that just not going happen. There was a funny disconnect on one point. The hosts talked near the top of the show about how great it was for Lady Shani to win Hijo del Tirantes hair, the first woman to win a man’s hair because their had never been a man/woman apuesta match before in AAA and how important it all was. Later, when Konnan came on, he buried took the same match and buried it, putting the blame on Hijo del Tirantes promising that he would get in great shape for it and didn’t live up to his word. Konnan thought everything else on that show was strong and was equally positive about everything announced on TripleMania so far. Konnan addressed the lack of title defenses by saying he’s run into lots of date conflicts in bringing back the foreign champions, going as far back as Purrazzo missing a show last year and more vaguely about the lack of FTR appearances. It must be a headache to have those problems, though it’s part of the package of putting championships onto people who are only working AAA as a side gig. Konnan was asked if the mixed tag team titles would be defended on TripleMania and said he believed they would not be. He was also asked if AAA would add more women and bluntly responded “we have 12, how many more do you want?” Konnan did go into more detail after that about his thought process but we got the point.

Both during the Konnan segment and other parts during the Space pushed the idea of choosing between Kenny Omega or Fenix as the Hijo del Vikingo’s opponent, and less the idea that other names could be a contender. The messaging on this hasn’t been clear; it’s probably too harsh to call it a half baked idea but it doesn’t feel like everyone internally understands the idea here or they’re having trouble getting it across. It’ll probably be Fenix and all of this now feels much ado about nothing.

I caught a bit of Penta’s conversation and it was mostly the same sort of respectful comments he made about Villano V at the press conference. They drifted off topic a few times. Penta early on said, on the first day of Lucha Underground, said he asked Dorian Roldan what he needed to do (or what he wasn’t doing) to become a top star. He talks about having similar conversations with Konnan along the same lines, and one message he got was to be a tougher and stronger rudo, which he added to his act. Penta’s had similar conversations in AEW – he mentions talking to Tony Khan via Whatsapp – but hasn’t really gotten the answer he can use.

Faby Apache disputed reports she left AAA . The person who reported Faby Apache left AAA was Faby Apache. She said she might post a video later to explain what’s going on but said stories (again, her own) about her leaving aren’t true. That story popped up Sunday and there are still websites running with it on Wednesday. The ‘correction’ has gotten no traction, such is the randomness of what passed along, so she’s going to be asked about this for months. I didn’t realize Faby Apache was actually on Instagram until this all started. She had official social media accounts started by AAA years ago but never used them and didn’t seem to be a social media person. Her actions suggest she’s still new at this and wasn’t prepared for a single Instagram comment to blow up like that.

Juventud Guerrera pitched being Hijo del Vikingo’s opponent for TripleMania on Facebook. That’s not going to happen but what AAA has provided as opening for luchadors to get themselves over by pushing themselves on social media to get the match. This is what every one, especially people actually in AAA, should be doing. It’s also something few Mexican wrestlers are wired to do. Not in a million years would I expect someone like Taurus to do more than RT something about how he should be in the match but I will be disappointed in someone Iguana if he doesn’t do something (unless there’s some AAA word out not to do anything.)

Other News

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania and the latest Lucha Report.

Big Lucha World tonight has that Komander/Arez tournament match. They got the card announced ahead of time so I almost forgot to mention it.

Impact announced matches with Taurus, Laredo, Horus and Bandido for their Saturday TV taping in Cicero.

Lucha Libre Boom says they’ll be running Arena Naucalpan on 09/01 with a Mistico vs Averno vs Atlantis Jr. main event. That show was postponed previously because Mistico’s injury.

MLW announced Alex Hammerstone vs Bandido for the MLW Title on the 09/18 Atlanta show. This was scheduled back for MLW’s show in Philadelphia back in June, which Bandido missed due to injury.

RIOT, in a long letter taking fans for their support during their seven years and various recent challenges, announced they’ll be returning in October.

Black Warrior announced one of his students would be new Vegas. Black Warrior had roughly a dozen different known gimmicks before settling on the famous one. He was Vegas for one month in September 1995 for AAA. (AAA may actually own the name but I’m not sure they’ve filled a trademark for it ever.) Black Power used the Vegas name in 1996, Mr. Mexico used it in 1997. It never was a big deal with whoever had it, maybe the new guy will make something more of it.
